Barcelona start talks with Benfica teenager's agent as sporting director Deco considers offer for centre-back

Barcelona have commenced their communication with Benfica teenager Goncalo Oliveira's agent over a possible move in the future. The player's entourage met Barca's sporting director Deco, and although only brief talks were held, the Catalan think-tank might consider an offer for the 19-year-old, who is yet to make his senior debut for the Portuguese giants.

Deco meets Oliveira's agents

According to , Portuguese agents Antonio Casanova and Carlo Goncalves held a meeting with Deco on the day of Barca's Champions League outing against Paris Saint-Germain, and discussed one young prodigy from Benfica, namely Oliveira. In recent times, the centre-back's performances have been noticed by other Portuguese clubs, and coaches inside Benfica's academy consider him one of the brightest prospects.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportBarca in no hurry to sign Oliveira

A brief informal meeting only witnessed verbal talks about the left-footed defender, with the negotiations yet to start. It is understood that Barca do not require an additional centre-back in their squad at this moment, and Deco believes a move will only see daylight after the scouting department analyses the situation and urges a new acquisition in defence. Additionally, the move will not be sanctioned without Deco's green light.

Mourinho rates teenager highly

Since taking over the hot seat at Benfica, Jose Mourinho has been a busy coach, managing four games in just 12 days. However, amidst this, he is said to be an admirer of Oliveira and kept him on the bench against Chelsea in their latest Champions League fixture. According to , the Portuguese manager has stated in a small group meeting: "He's my weakness."

The defender is contracted until 2029 and is expected to soon feature in the senior team under Mourinho.

Rodgers not happy: Celtic now working to sign 3 new players before Sep 1

Brendan Rodgers has had a strong start to the season with Celtic winning both of their opening Scottish Premiership games and only sitting behind Hearts on goal difference.

So far this window Celtic have brought in six players, three purchased and three on free transfers. The youngest of the permanent signings is 19-year-old Callum Osmand, who arrived on a free from Fulham’s academy where he registered 24-goal involvement in 32 appearances last season.

Rodgers has also brought in one loanee with Manchester City youngster Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. Celtic have signed the 19-year-old on a season-long loan, but they don’t have an option to buy, meaning if they decide they want to make the signing permanent next summer, then they will have to enter negotiations with City.

Despite these arrivals, Rodgers has spoken publicly about his desire to sign new players, particularly at the top end of the pitch.

Rodgers wants busy end to the window with Celtic working on 3 signings

According to FootballI Insider’s sources, Celtic are planning on making three more signings before the window closes. These signings are looking to be a centre back, a winger and a striker. The report stating the Hoops are working on the deals behind the scenes after Rodgers ‘publicly revealed that he is unhappy with the Hoops’ business so far’.

This number could potentially increase to four if they qualify for the Champions League. Celtic’s next step in qualification will be their two-legged fixture against Kazakh side FC Kairat.

Celtic were already looking to sign a new winger following the departure of Nicholas Kuhn to Como but with the news that Jota has suffered cruciate ligament damage and will be unavailable for approximately nine months this matter has become even more pressing.

Celtic's transfer targets

With at least three players left to bring in and only a few weeks left of the window, Celtic have likely already identified, and may be in talks with the relevant parties associated with, the players they want to sign.

Celtics’ move for Jakob Breum from Go Ahead Eagles earlier in the window was derailed by Rangers’ purchase of Oliver Antman as it gave the Eagles the financial freedom to keep him. However, if Celtic have their heart set on Breum, then they could come in with an increased offer that’s too good to be refused.

For Rodgers new striker lots of names have been floated, some of which have now found new clubs, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Evan Ferguson. One name that they had previously had been linked to that is still available is Italian youngster Giuseppe Ambrosino, who had been rumored to sign alongside Shin Yamada.

Big upgrade on Yang: "Exciting" £5m star on the transfer agenda for Celtic

Celtic could find a big upgrade on Hyun-jun Yang by signing this star before the end of the window.

ByDan Emery Aug 13, 2025

At the other end of the pitch, Etienne Youte is a name that has come up several times. The French youngster has an estimated price tag of £4.3 million and has been a reported target of a number of clubs across Europe and looks like he will leave Le Havre before the transfer window ends.

Only time will tell if Celtic go for players that have previously been linked with or new targets, but either way, it looks like Celtic could be conducting business right up until the windows close.

Bangladesh struggle to keep up after Verreynne century and Rabada double-strike

Bangladesh ended the second day of the Test 101 runs behind with seven wickets left in their second innings

Himanshu Agrawal22-Oct-2024Stumps Seven balls after bringing the light meter out for the first time on day two, the umpires pulled the plug on the day’s play because of bad light. If that was somewhat abrupt, a third-umpire decision that took its time coming added drama to what turned out to be the last delivery of the day.Mahmudul Hasan Joy, on 38, decided to skip out of the crease to Dane Piedt, and missed the ball with his wild swing. The ball bounced a fair bit, and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne collected it in front of his right shoulder and whipped the bails off. The TV umpire saw multiple replays and concluded Mahmudul was not out – the bat was behind the line but in the air, but it seemed to have lifted after being grounded once. Verreynne’s expression showed how tight it was.Related

Verreynne on his 114: 'Definitely the best and most rewarding innings of my career'

Rabada – the most lethal bowler in the 300-wicket club

Taijul's light shines bright even as Shakib shadow looms large

The day belonged to Verreynne, who hit his second Test century in the afternoon session. That, combined with Wiaan Mulder’s maiden half-century and Piedt’s resistance from No. 10, took South Africa to 308 despite them being 108 for 6 at one stage. And with a cushion of a 202-run first-innings lead, Kagiso Rabada struck twice early in the second innings to have Bangladesh at 4 for 2, before a fightback from Mahmudul, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim.Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque fell for single-digit scores within the first four overs for the second time in as many days, as Rabada extracted plenty of pace and bounce with the new ball. His wickets came off back-of-a-length deliveries. In the third over, he got one to nip into Shadman, who inside-edged to short leg, where Tony de Zorzi took a sharp catch to his left. Three balls later, Mominul went defending but got an outside edge to third slip, where Mulder went low to grab a dipping ball.Mahmudul and Shanto added 55 to rebuild briefly, before Keshav Maharaj trapped Shanto in front. Maharaj got a full delivery to turn in from outside off, and Shanto, who had opened his stance up in looking to defend, was struck on his back leg, which was dragging towards off.Mushfiqur then hit an entertaining 31 off 26 deliveries in an unbroken stand of 42 with Mahmudul to ensure there was no further damage, although Bangladesh still ended the day 101 runs behind South Africa.Hasan Mahmud took two wickets in the first session•BCBThe advantage South Africa enjoyed was down to Verreynne. He swept every other ball that came his way, and when he finally missed one, he was stumped by Litton Das. That ended South Africa’s innings at 308 but by then, Verreynne had raced to his hundred. He took just 144 balls to score 114, becoming only the third wicketkeeper-batter from his country to get a Test hundred in Asia. Fittingly, the landmark came off a paddle sweep off Taijul Islam in the 86th over. Both Verreynne’s sixes were pumped once he was past the three-figure mark: one a slog-sweep off the wicketless Nayeem Hasan, and the other a pull off Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Just before that, Mehidy had broken a frustrating ninth-wicket stand of 66. Piedt, who batted solidly, nudged and pushed his way to 32 before he was trapped in front off the 87th delivery he had faced. It turned in and he was given out on field. Piedt reviewed, and it returned an umpire’s call. And immediately after Verreynne’s second six, Mehidy slowed the ball down to have him stumped.Earlier, the overnight pair of Verreynne and Mulder took their seventh-wicket to 119. The pitch seemed to have settled nicely for batting on the second morning, with no apparent turn available for Taijul. Verreynne particularly looked assured against Hasan Mahmud, who had started the day alongside Taijul, nudging the pacer past mid-on for three, and clipping and driving him for boundaries.Wiaan Mulder made 54, his highest Test score•AFP/Getty ImagesTaijul then had Mulder poking, only for the outside edge to fall short of slip. That had as much to do with Mulder playing with soft hands as the slowness of the surface. Mulder and Verreynne adjusted to the pitch, and calmly did the job against the spin of Taijul and Nayeem. Both batters used the sweep and the reverse sweep to great effect despite Nayeem turning the ball in appreciably on occasion. That was down to them taking a good stride forward to get to the pitch of the deliveries, and playing their shots with confidence. They played 38 sweeps – or reverse sweeps – against spin on the second morning, and got 59 runs off them, including seven boundaries and a six.Bangladesh posted a man close in at square leg to prevent the batters from earning easy runs from the sweep, and yet Verreynne got to his half-century when he drilled one to the man there. Mulder then got to his half-century at the start of the 64th over, when he cut Nayeem for four behind point.Shanto had brought Mahmud back into the attack, and he struck back-to-back blows. First, he pitched on a back-of-a-length outside off, the ball holding its line. Mulder went for the punch, but edged to wide slip. Next ball, Mahmud went much fuller, reversing the ball into Maharaj and beating his defence to uproot off stump. But Piedt, who was in next, not only denied Mahmud a hat-trick, but also annoyed Bangladesh no end.

Mendises hit powerful centuries to put Sri Lanka in position of dominance

New Zealand ended the second day on 22 for 2, 580 runs behind, after Conway fell in controversial fashion

Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Sep-2024Stumps For Sri Lanka, it was a day of big numbers. Kamindu Mendis became the fastest man to 1000 Test runs in 75 years when he struck 182 not out. He equalled Don Bradman’s pace to the milestone, and sits third-equal alongside the greatest batter cricket has ever seen.Kusal Mendis made a hundred too – the tenth in his career – as he and Kamindu put on an unbeaten stand of 200 for the sixth wicket. All up, Sri Lanka got to 602 for 5 before declaring the moment Kamindu had crossed the 1000-run mark. They had batted 163.4 overs.Related

Kamindu equals Bradman, becomes fastest to 1000 Test runs in 75 years

For New Zealand, it was a day of much smaller numbers. They claimed only two wickets in the 73.4 overs they bowled on day two, with Glenn Phillips the only bowler to make breakthroughs. Towards the end of the day, they had 14 overs to face, and inside those, Tom Latham was out for 2, and Devon Conway dismissed – via a controversial third-umpire’s decision – for 9. They finished at 22 for 2, with hope getting slimmer by the over that they can meaningfully compete in this match. The pitch seemed to be taking substantial turn towards the end of the day, while Sri Lanka operated with the new ball at least.Kamindu’s progress from 51 overnight was largely in the morning session, in which he moved to 93. He scored heavily square of the wicket, as usual, rarely going several balls without finding a scoring shot. Through this period Phillips always seemed the likeliest bowler to get a wicket, thanks in part to the work he was putting on the ball.In fact, Phillips would get two, both off top edges as Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva attempted sweep shots. Mathews had added only ten to his overnight 78, before de Silva made 44 in Kamindu’s company. But after lunch, Sri Lanka had it almost entirely their way. Kamindu moved unfussily to a fifth Test hundred and celebrated with trademark reserve. Kusal started slowly as New Zealand put together some tight spells after lunch – Mitchell Santner bowling with particular control – before he too began to find run-scoring easier, particularly thanks to his strong sweep shot. He made only 24 off his first 71 balls, with only one four on his ledger. But with batting to come, and Sri Lanka’s total growing gigantic now, he began to attack, going after Phillips first, as he got to his fifty in an over that he struck two fours and a six in, before settling into a more positive outlook in general. Twice he launched Ajaz Patel, who went wicketless in the innings and conceded 135, over deep midwicket for six. Kamindu also launched Ajaz down the ground for a six.Glenn Phillips was the only New Zealand bowler who looked like taking a wicket – he finished with three•AFP/Getty ImagesThe pair batted right through the middle session, going to tea at 135 and 70. The evening was about notching milestones – Kamindu making the second 150 of his career, before Kusal strode to his century, off 148 balls in the end. After that it was about letting Kamindu get to 178, so he could surpass the 1000-run career tally. Captain de Silva declared soon as Kamindu had launched Ravindra down the ground for the six that got him there.New Zealand faced a testing spell from Asitha Fernando first up, as the bowler got substantial late swing in to the left-handed openers. One of these balls moved back in to Latham in the first over, took his edge and flew to gully, where Pathum Nissanka gobbled it up.The dismissal of the struggling Conway in the ninth over of the innings was not as straightforward. Conway had defended at a turning ball from Prabath Jayasuriya, with the bowler and wicketkeeper appealing immediately – seemingly for the lbw. Umpire Nitin Menon gave Conway out, but when the batter reviewed, there was an obvious outside edge, before the ball struck thigh pad. However, after it struck pad, the ball had flown to de Silva at slip, who seemingly took a low catch. The replays did not conclusively show that he had his fingers under that ball, though it was close. The third umpire ruled it out, however, much to Conway’s displeasure.Such was the amount of turn Sri Lanka’s spinners were generating towards the end of the day, even Kane Williamson struggled. He was 6 off 42 at stumps, alongside nightwatchman Ajaz.

Bangladesh, Netherlands hope for batting boost in Kingstown

Match details

Bangladesh vs Netherlands
June 13, Kingstown, 10:30am local

Big picture: Winner stays in touching distance of Super 8s

Netherlands will hunt for their first big fish (Full Members side) when they take on Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup’s newest venue in Kingstown, St Vincent. It is a fresh pitch where competitive cricket hasn’t been played for a while now. Both sets of batters, battered and bruised in New York, will look forward to a better experience.Bangladesh endured a hectic travel schedule after their South Africa game in New York, with their chartered flight out delayed by five hours. They arrived early Tuesday morning in their Kingstown hotel, and cancelled training on that day.Coupled with the travel stress, Bangladesh are dealing with heartbreak of a close defeat to South Africa. Their inability to put away Keshav Maharaj’s full-tosses in the final over cost them the game. Bangladesh have had trouble closing off T20I chases over the last eight years, and on Monday, Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali, reputed big hitters, could not find a boundary in the last three overs of their chase.Related

  • Washout puts SL on brink of exit; SA confirm Super Eight spot

Their top order batting has also been worrying. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opened with Tanzid Hasan against South Africa, with Soumya Sarkar left out, but neither opening pair has managed a double-digit stand yet in this tournament. Litton Das showed a bit of form against Sri Lanka but gave it away cheaply against South Africa. Only Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah have shown batting form, while it has mostly been the bowling attack that has kept Bangladesh afloat.Netherlands will have their hands full against Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed with the new ball, before Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain go at them in the middle overs. The pace trio has done well in the death overs too, and among the spin-bowling allrounders Mahmudullah has been mostly economical while Shakib Al Hasan, despite a poor start to the tournament, can never be counted out.Netherlands themselves have bowled brilliantly in the T20 World Cup, beating Nepal in Dallas and pushing South Africa close in New York. Logan van Beek, Bas de Leede and Tim Pringle have bowled well in partnerships alongside Vivian Kingma and Paul van Meekeren.Like Bangladesh, they too have batting problems. Max O’Dowd has made their only half-century so far, while the rest of the batters haven’t taken off, particularly Michael Levitt who was their form player leading up to the T20 World Cup.This could be a tense scrap in Kingstown, with the result coming down to which bowling attack can better dominate on the day.

Form guide

Bangladesh LWWLL (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
Netherlands LWLLL

In the spotlight – Logan van Beek and Taskin Ahmed

Taskin Ahmed has performed admirably as the attack leader. He has taken the big wickets of Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka in Bangladesh’s two games, while going at just 5.50 per over. It is still early days but if he can keep getting the ball to shape and maintain his overall fitness, Taskin could end as one of the top bowlers of the tournament.Logan van Beek has already bowled arguably the ball of the tournament. His delivery to Reeza Hendricks in New York pitched on middle and off, squared up the batter, and flicked the off bail as van Beek flew into a celebratory run. He has been Netherlands’ best bowler in their two matches so far, picking up five wickets. Accuracy is van Beek’s hallmark, regardless of whether he is bowling with an upright or wobbly seam. All aboard the Logan van Beek flight•ICC/Getty Images

Team news: Bangladesh could look at batting options

Bangladesh are still unsure about their top and lower middle order. Soumya Sarkar and Mahedi Hasan are among their batting options if they are looking for another change.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Najmul Hosain Shanto (capt), 3 Litton Das (wk), 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Jaker Ali, 8 Rishad Hossain, 9 Tanzim Hasan, 10 Taskin Ahmed 11 Mustafizur Rahman.Barring last-minute injuries, Netherlands are likely to continue with the same XI.Netherlands (probable): 1 Michael Levitt, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Vikramjit Singh, 4 Sybrand Engelbrecht, 5 Bas de Leede, 6 Scott Edwards (capt & wk), 7 Teja Nidamanuru, 8 Logan van Beek, 9 Tim Pringle, 10 Paul van Meekeren, 11 Vivian Kingma.

Pitch and conditions

International cricket returns to Arnos Vale after nearly ten years. The ground has never hosted a CPL match either, so it is hard to predict what the conditions might be like. There’s a bit of early-morning rain in the forecast in the region.

Stats and trivia

  • Bangladesh, incidentally, played the last international match at Arnos Vale, a Test-match defeat to West Indies in September 2014. Mahmudullah is the only member of their T20 World Cup squad to have featured in that game. They will also play against Nepal here on June 17, and a three-match T20I series against West Indies later this year.
  • Bangladesh hold an overall 4-3 win record over Netherlands in all formats but they lost their most recent meeting, the 2023 World Cup game in Kolkata.
  • Netherlands made their best start with the ball against a Full Member team in T20Is when they reduced South Africa to 12 for 4 in their last game.
  • Tanzim Hasan has picked up three wickets in the powerplay overs at this World Cup, at an average of 8.33.

Quotes

“We spoke about this ground. I think Shakib was telling me that he made his captaincy debut in this ground. Riyad has a Test five-for.”
“We are in the ground for the first time today. It seems to be in wonderful shape. The wicket is great. I think tomorrow’s match is one that the island has waited a long time for.”

Left for £0: Spurs' "waste of money" is now outscoring Delap & Nkunku

Had Tottenham Hotspur not won the Europa League final against Manchester United last week, this campaign would’ve been a real failure for the club, falling way below the levels they’ve set for themselves.

Ange Postecoglou has been a man under pressure throughout 2024/25, with their European success handing the Aussie a lifeline to resurrect his time in North London.

The 17th-place finish in the Premier League this campaign highlights the need for improvement next season, with Ange running the risk of losing his job should he fail to do so.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

However, the summer presents another opportunity to invest and improve the first team squad, possibly able to attract some top-level talent given their Champions League qualification.

Even though the window has yet to open, numerous names have been touted with a switch to North London in an attempt to bolster the options at the manager’s disposal.

The latest on Spurs’ move to land a new striker

Liam Delap is a name that has been on Spurs’ shortlist over the last couple of weeks, monitoring his situation and preparing a move after his £30m relegation release clause became active.

However, it appears as though the Lilywhites are set to miss out on the 22-year-old this window, after it was confirmed he has agreed a move to join London rivals Chelsea.

Ipswich Town'sLiamDelapreacts

Such a move could prove to benefit Ange’s side over the coming months, potentially allowing Christopher Nkunku to depart Stamford Bridge after falling down the pecking order under Enzo Maresca.

The Frenchman has been the subject of an enquiry from Daniel Levy, opening the door to a potential £50m switch across the capital to link up with the Lilywhites in North London.

It’s evident that a new forward is on the agenda this summer, but one player who previously plied his trade at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has thrived since his departure over the past few seasons.

The former Spurs player who’s outscored Delap & Nkunku in 2024/25

Over the last 12 months, Spurs have had numerous attackers who have contributed to their various levels of success, helping them in their quest for European glory.

Brennan Johnson has proved the doubters wrong in recent times, scoring 18 goals across all competitions – including the all-important strike against United that secured the club’s first trophy in 17 years.

The Welsh international has thrived under Postecoglou, now being a key player and registering over three times more goals than he did during his first year in North London.

However, the side could’ve benefited further had they kept hold of Ivan Perišić, with the Croatian winger thriving for PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands despite being 36.

He joined the club in the summer of 2022, arriving on a free transfer under Antonio Conte after his release from Inter Milan at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Croatian made 44 appearances during his first season at the club, notching one goal and 12 assists, but he would be unable to make such an impact during his second season in North London.

He would tear his ACL in the early stages of 2023/24, featuring in just six matches, before moving to Hajduk Split on a free transfer at the end of his contract in the summer of 2024.

However, Perisic, who was labelled a “massive waste of money” by The Athletic’s James Maw, has thrived at PSV this campaign, registering 16 goals in all competitions – tallies higher than Delap and Nkunku, who’ve scored 12 and 14 respectively.

Given his age and the long-term injury he sustained at the club, it’s understandable that the club would allow him to leave – especially considering he was on £180k-per-week, as per Capology.

Ivan Perisic for Tottenham

His return to form, even scoring in the Champions League, is a credit to Perisic, making Spurs rue their mistake in allowing him to depart and showcasing his elite-level talents despite his entering the back end of his career.

Aston Villa add record-breaking forward to shortlist as Monchi plots move

Shifting their focus towards the summer transfer window, Aston Villa have now reportedly added a record-breaking forward to their list of targets, with sporting director Monchi getting ready to pounce.

Aston Villa battling PSR again this summer

As Unai Emery’s side go in pursuit of Champions League qualification, those at Villa Park should be keen to point out the consequences that may occur should they fail to break into the top five in the final two games of the Premier League campaign. With PSR concerns hanging over their head, the Midlands club are on course for a difficult summer, which may leave them in a position with no choice but to sell at least one key man.

Just who leaves as a result of their PSR troubles remains to be seen, but that hasn’t stopped the transfer rumours from coming thick and fast regarding Aston Villa’s most important players.

Recent reports have seen both Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers linked with moves away to the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool and, although both sales would instantly ease their PSR problems, Villa will be well aware of just how much of an impact both make on Emery’s side.

Ollie Watkins celebrates with Morgan Rogers for Aston Villa.

Emery, himself, was recently full of praise for Watkins after he became Villa’s best-ever Premier League goalscorer, telling reporters: “Ollie Watkins is very fantastic. How he plays consistently here and his career as a player, he is very humble and trying to improve every day. He is not relaxing – he is always trying to do his work. His work is fantastic.”

However, as “fantastic” as Watkins is, Emery may have no choice but to find a replacement for his star striker when the summer arrives and could even turn towards La Liga to do exactly that.

Aston Villa set sights on Sorloth

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa have now added Alexander Sorloth to their summer shortlist and Monchi is already plotting a move to sign the Atletico Madrid forward. Racing alongside Newcastle United for his signature, the Villans will hope to welcome the 6 foot 4 target man if Watkins departs to instantly solve their striker problem.

If there were any doubts over Sorloth’s ability, then his record-breaking hat-trick against Real Sociedad last time out should have put those to bed once and for all. Adding three more goals to take his total to 21 for the season, the 29-year-old striker could be one to watch when the summer transfer window swings open.

Top target: Arsenal now very keen on £48m forward who's "ideal" for Arteta

Arsenal have now identified an “unbelievable” player as their number one target on the left-wing, and there is a belief he would be the ideal addition to the squad, according to a report.

Gunners set sights on new winger

Gabriel Martinelli has shown some promising signs in the second half of the campaign, most recently scoring in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, but the Gunners appear to be increasingly keen on bringing in competition for the Brazilian.

Most recently, the north Londoners started work on a move for AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, with sporting director Andrea Berta personally identifying the Portugal international as a transfer target, although the £85m asking price could be an obstacle.

Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane, who is yet to sign a new contract to extend his stay in the Bundesliga, has also emerged as an option for Mikel Arteta’s side, with the German’s agent keen for his client to move to the Emirates Stadium.

However, according to a report from The Daily Mail, a different winger is Arsenal’s number one target for the summer transfer window, namely Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, with the Spaniard viewed as the ideal option to compete for Martinelli’s starting spot.

Leandro Trossard is currently exploring a move to the Saudi Pro League, which may exacerbate the need for the Gunners to bring in a new winger, and Williams is their top target to provide competition for Martinelli, who has been inconsistent this season.

Chelsea are also interested in the left-winger, however, which could complicate a deal, with Leao and Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens being identified as potential alternative targets for Arteta’s side, should they miss out on the Athletic Club star.

"Unbelievable" Williams could be "ideal" for Arteta

Amid previous links with the Spain international, Arsenal-supporting scout Ben Mattinson claimed the forward could be “ideal” for Arteta, given his ability to play on both flanks and drive at opposition defences.

The left-winger also caught the eye during Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, with BBC broadcaster John Bennett singling him out for high praise.

Having impressed for his national side last summer, the 22-year-old is currently enjoying an impressive campaign in La Liga, with five goals and five assists to his name, while also providing seven goal contributions in the Europa League.

It is clear that Arteta needs to bring in competition for Martinelli this summer, and Williams’ performances this season more than justify an outlay of £48m.
