Currently contested between the Champions League and Europa League winners, the UEFA Super Cup may soon see its format doubled. According to reports, a proposal is on the table to include four teams, likely adding other European competition winners into the mix, and stage the matches abroad. The change could see the curtain-raiser relocated to major venues in the United States or Middle East in an attempt to tap into growing global interest and boost broadcasting revenue.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

This year’s match between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham is taking place in Udine at the 25,000-capacity Stadio Friuli – the first time Italy has hosted the fixture. However, the venue was the only bidder, highlighting a potential lack of enthusiasm among European cities. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has already said that playing top European club games in the US is "possible", while Spain’s four-team Super Cup has been held in Saudi Arabia since 2020.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The UEFA Super Cup was first played in 1973 between Ajax and AC Milan, with the Dutch side winning 6-1 on aggregate. Until 1998, the fixture was contested over two legs before switching to a single neutral venue.

A decision on the format is expected ahead of the next media rights bidding round. If approved, the expanded Super Cup could debut before the 2026-27 season, potentially marking the first time the event is staged outside Europe.

Dravid locks in Rohit and Jaiswal as openers for Afghanistan T20Is

Head coach also confirmed that Ishan Kishan had asked for a break for this series and Shreyas Iyer was dropped, not rested

Dravid not concerned with lack of T20Is ahead of World Cup

Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are India’s first-choice openers for now, head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed ahead of the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali. With Virat Kohli not available for Thursday’s game, Shubman Gill, the third opener in the squad, could slot in at No. 3.”As of now, we will be certainly opening with Rohit and Jaiswal,” Dravid said. “But when you have a squad, you have to have that flexibility to do whatever is required if that is in the best interest of the team, and gives us the best chance to succeed. So nothing is closed. But certainly, we’re really happy with what Jaiswal has done as an opener for us, and he gives us a left-right combination as well at the top.”Jaiswal came into the side on the back of an excellent IPL 2023, where he was the fifth-highest run-getter, with a tally of 625 runs. What separated him from other Indian openers was his whopping strike rate of 163.61.Related

Suryakumar, Hardik ruled out of Afghanistan T20Is

More importantly, he has been able to replicate those numbers at international level. Since making his T20I debut, against West Indies in August 2023, Jaiswal has 430 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 159.25. And across T20s since the start of 2023, his powerplay strike rate is 163.69. For comparison, Gill’s powerplay strike rate in the same period is 138.44.Kishan ‘not available’; Iyer droppedDravid also clarified that Ishan Kishan had asked for a break during this series, and that Shreyas Iyer was dropped. After the squad was announced, there was speculation over whether Iyer had been rested or dropped. Earlier this week, he was named in Mumbai’s squad for their second Ranji Trophy game, against Andhra from January 12. Dravid clarified there was no disciplinary reason behind Iyer’s exclusion.”Ishan Kishan was not available for selection,” he said. “Ishan requested for a break [while] in South Africa – which we which we agreed to, which we supported, [and] which we recognised – and he has not yet made himself available for selection. I’m sure when he is ready, he will play domestic cricket and make himself available for selection.”And certainly in Shreyas Iyer’s case, there was absolutely no disciplinary reason for his non-inclusion. There were a lot of batsmen in the team, and Shreyas Iyer missed out. He didn’t play the T20s in South Africa as well, if you notice, and it’s unfortunate. He is a fine player, but there are a lot of batsmen, and it is not easy to fit everyone in the squad and the playing XI. There are absolutely no disciplinary reasons, and that was not discussed at all – at least in my discussions with the selectors when they were having these deliberations and discussions.”For this series, Afghanistan are without Rashid Khan, who is recovering from his back surgery. But they still have a strong spin attack comprising Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Qais Ahmed, Noor Ahmed and Sharafuddin Ashraf, and Dravid looked forward to the challenge India’s batters faced.”We know they have got some really good spinners,” Dravid said. “So it will be a good challenge for our batsmen. We have discussed about it as well – how to play and dominate their spinners. So it will be a good challenge, and we are looking forward to it.”

Southern Brave claim maiden Hundred title to give Shrubsole fitting farewell

Wyatt half-century, Bell and Moore three-fors as Superchargers fall well short

Anya Shrubsole signed off from professional cricket by lifting the Hundred trophy at Lord’s, captaining Southern Brave to their first title in their third final. After successive defeats to Oval Invincibles, they comprehensively outplayed Northern Superchargers in front of a record 21,636 crowd at Lord’s.Brave’s batting let them down in their first two finals and they were 8 for 2 after nine balls on Sunday, Smriti Mandhana and Maia Bouchier falling cheaply after Superchargers opted to bowl first. But they recovered to set a target of 140, Danni Wyatt making 59 off 38 and Freya Kemp contributing an invaluable 31 off 17 from No. 5.Lauren Bell struck twice in her first eight balls in Brave’s defence, including removing Superchargers’ leading run-scorer Phoebe Litchfield who was well caught by Kemp at deep cover-point, and Superchargers were always behind the game.Rhianna Southby, Brave’s 22-year-old wicketkeeper, has played a crucial role for them despite not facing a ball this season: she effected three stumpings in the chase, and finished the Hundred with a tournament-high 11 dismissals.Jemimah Rodrigues opened the batting for Superchargers and was starved of the strike: when she was caught at extra cover for 24, she had faced just 14 of the first 73 balls bowled. Bell and Kalea Moore took three wickets each, and the winning moment came when Bell whipped off the bails to run No. 11 Grace Ballinger out after a mix-up.Shrubsole had been due to bowl the final five balls but Superchargers were bowled out with six to spare. Having left international cricket after last year’s World Cup, she opted to play on as Brave captain this year and her impending retirement has been a source of motivation for the squad throughout the season, who were determined to send her off with a trophy.Shrubsole looked uncharacteristically emotional in the aftermath of the final wicket, and admitted her overwhelming emotion was one of relief. “We feel like we’ve played some brilliant cricket,” she said, “coming into this we’d won 20 out of 25 games which is an unbelievable record. Not to have won the trophy was tough to take so it felt like this was just deserts.”For Charlotte Edwards, their coach, this was a third short-form trophy this year, after success in the Women’s Premier League with Mumbai Indians and with Southern Vipers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Brave have been the best team across the three seasons of the Hundred, and lifted an overdue trophy as the fireworks were set off at Lord’s.Danni Wyatt notched the first half-century in a Women’s Hundred final•ECB via Getty Images

After walking around the boundary from the stage in the Compton Stand, Shrubsole was given a guard of honour by both teams as she walked back towards the pavilion, holding the H-shaped trophy aloft as she did so. It was a fitting send-off for a great of England women’s cricket.Mandhana hit the first ball of the final for four through point but slashed the second to gully, and when Bouchier skied Kate Cross to extra cover, they were forced to rebuild through Wyatt and Georgia Adams. They had 45 off the first 43 balls of the final before Wyatt cut loose with back-to-back boundaries off Lucy Higham, at which point Superchargers became ragged in the field. Wyatt, who finished the tournament as leading run-scorer, swept Higham for four to bring up a 35-ball 50 and lofted Georgia Wareham for the first six of the game. She was primed to accelerate at the death when she was on the wrong end of a freak dismissal: Adams drove the ball straight back at her at the non-striker’s end as she started to take a run, and Cross executed a simple run-out as it popped up into her hands. When Adams holed out to midwicket after a chancy 27 off 28, Superchargers had an opening. But Kemp added 31 with a streaky cameo, hitting five boundaries to keep Brave on track. She eventually chopped Cross’ cutter onto her stumps; while Cross fumbled both a catch and a run-out chance off the penultimate ball, she was the pick of Superchargers’ attack with 3 for 21 off her 20.Bell thought she had struck with the first ball of the chase, trapping Marie Kelly on the pad only for her to successfully review the on-field decision. It hardly mattered: Kelly was dismissed by the next delivery she faced, with the ball ricocheting off her pad and onto the base of the stumps. When Litchfield lofted into the deep, Brave had two early wickets and were in control of the game. Southby’s sharp work gave Moore a wicket with her first ball, stumping Hollie Armitage, and her fast hands accounted for Bess Heath soon after, Chloe Tryon making amends for a drop on the square-leg boundary by beating her on the outside edge.Shrubsole had Alice Davidson-Richards lbw to leave Superchargers five down, and a brilliant catch by Bouchier – running in off the long-on boundary, then diving forwards at full stretch – meant Rodrigues was their last hope. Having tried and failed to build partnerships by knocking singles, she looked to loft Moore over extra cover but picked Adams out.Southby pulled off her third stumping as Leah Dobson charged Moore and missed, and Bell administered the last rites, having Higham caught at short fine leg then completing a straightforward run-out at the bowler’s end to cue the celebrations.

La Gazetta dello Sport states that De Bruyne's agents will meet with Napoli representatives on Wednesday over the possibility of signing a two-year deal, with the option of a third year, and a €10 million (£8.4m) signing bonus.

De Bruyne will, arguably, go down as City's greatest player but that was not enough for him to be offered a new contract. The 33-year-old played his last game for the Manchester outfit on Sunday, and now speculation is rife he will join newly-crowned Serie A champions Napoli shortly after becoming a free agent. And according to Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Belgian international has bought a house in Naples and a move is very much on the cards.

WHAT DE LAURENTIIS SAID

He told RAI: "Could De Bruyne be nearby to celebrate Napoli's title? Probably yes. He bought a beautiful house here in the city, I had a call with him, his wife, and his nine-year-old son this morning, it was a beautiful sight. There is nothing signed yet."

Rishi Patel's maiden ton leads 'sensational' Leicestershire to historic win at Yorkshire

In 1910, King George V was crowned, the London Palladium was opened and, believe it or not, a match between Eton and Harrow was described by Wisden as the most sensational in the history of cricket. It was also the last time Leicestershire beat Yorkshire in the Championship at Headingley.Well, now they have done it again. Times change, and even the 2024 Wisden, with its annual commitment to county cricket, might not be as effusive as it once was about Eton vs Harrow, but this time it is Leicestershire who deserve the term “sensational”.In what must rank as one of the biggest Championship shocks for years, they pulled off the third-highest successful chase in their history, conquering a target of 389 in 87 overs by three wickets with seven balls to spare, surpassing the 378 for 5 they achieved to beat Middlesex at Grace Road two years ago.Foremost among Leicestershire’s heroes was Rishi Patel, whose maiden Championship hundred, 125 from 205 balls, fired their belief that such a formidable final-day chase was in reach. They owed much, too, to the controlled power of Colin Ackermann in mid-afternoon and the nervelessness of Peter Handscomb, whose watchful role in making an unbeaten 68 from 99 balls was expertly judged.Add some lusty blows against the second new ball by the long-in-the-tooth, long-handle of Chris Wright (40 from 32 balls), finished by a steer of Jordan Thompson’s bouncer over the keeper, and the celebrations were theirs. The cheers from the away dressing room almost drowned out the shouts from the rugby ground across the way where Leeds Rhinos were in action.Rishi Patel scored his maiden Championship hundred•Getty Images

If that shock 1910 victory caused only minor reverberations at the time, it was also quite a thing. The Yorkshire side included the great Kirkheaton triumvirate of George Hirst, Schofield Haigh and Wilfred Rhodes. But they were captained by that year by Everard Ratcliffe during prolonged absences of Lord Hawke, the great Yorkshire autocrat, had one of their worst seasons in that era and succumbed to Thomas Jayes’ seven-for in the second innings; Jayes was to die of TB three years later. Not for the first time, Dom Bess underwent a marathon Yorkshire spell without quite gaining reward: his fortune will surely change. It is hard to envisage another Yorkshire spin bowler taking five wickets at Headingley as early as April 9. Bess finished with 5 for 158 off 32 overs, a marathon spell from the 13th over interrupted only for a brief rest and a change of ends, and clingfilmed a vulnerable Yorkshire seam attack on a monotonously dead surface.A second new ball that might have provided a route to Yorkshire’s victory became instead their downfall as Yorkshire removed Bess from the attack after long discussions with 37 needed from five overs. It was understandable, but Ben Coad’s second over back (the requirement now 25 from three) cost 16, beginning with Handscomb’s immediate switch of gear as he crept down the pitch and yanked a back-of-the-length ball into the Western Terrace for six. Wright followed up with two slaps down the ground and the game was as good as Leicestershire’s.So much for pre-match theories. If Yorkshire wanted perfect opponents to rebuild their morale after a year that had brought relegation on the field and widespread condemnation off it then surely Leicestershire were that team. Leicestershire, so often county cricket’s whipping boys, bottom of the pile last season without a single victory to their name.Such thoughts did not extend to the dressing room – a delayed declaration on the final day was proof of that. Yorkshire’s lead was 322 at the start of play with six wickets intact. There had been grumbles from some spectators that Yorkshire had not declared late on the the previous evening, but the pitch was flat and what logic there was in such a view presumably arose from an early-season attack of Yorkshire hubris which like the common cold is not easily shaken off.Instead, Yorkshire thrashed a further 66 in seven overs, and those seven overs took the best part of 50 minutes, in part due to a hand injury suffered by Jordan Thompson to the first ball he faced, but also some deliberate indolence from Leicestershire in the field, supervised by a captain, Lewis Hill, who appeared to prefer low-level professionalism to any thoughts of victory. Survival cricket can become a habit. Perhaps he has learned something from what followed.Related

On this surface, for the bowlers there was nowt doin’, not even for the new ball on a murky Easter Sunday morning. Leicestershire worked the ball around with ease. George Hill, a part-time seamer, was the only bowler able to exert control. Sometimes cricket history is made with stirring deeds, bringing an avalanche of emotions. Sometimes, like this time, historic moments gather slowly and surreptitiously. After Leicestershire had conceded 517 on first innings, a win felt barely conceivable, although recovering from such a position has become increasingly common, nine of the 20 occasions occuring this century.Sol Budinger supported Patel in a lively opener of 80 before Bess took the first of his three wickets as the batter picked out midwicket. Hill was the only Leicestershire batter to fail when he tried to cut Bess and edged to the keeper. Patel should have been caught off Coad at point on eight – a blemish by James Wharton. But the methodical air was immediately re-established as Colin Ackermann joined Patel in a stand of 113 in 27 overs. Patel, who made eight single-figure scores in his last 11 innings last season, almost perished to a return catch against Hill on 97, bur recovered his poise to slog-sweep Bess for six in to the deserted West Stand to reach three figures.Leicestershire never looked overstretched as Ackermann, more than anybody, met Bess with ease, only for the offspinner to intervene just before tea, with the requirement looking a very manageable 188 from 38 at 4.95. At 20 to 4, much to everyone’s amazement, the ball turned appreciably and Ackermann fell lbw on the back foot.Yorkshire maintained an attacking intent as much as the situation allowed – Adam Lyth, a “stand-in, stand-in captain”, holding his nerve. Lyth himself did not walk out of slip until 78 overs had gone and by then Yorkshire had removed not just Patel, but Bess had also defeated two batters on the charge – Wiaan Mulder slicing high to deep cover and Rehan Ahmed wilder still as he was stumped by Shai Hope. When Michael Finan’s promotion up the order failed, it felt like Leicestershire might fall short, but this Yorkshire pace attack lacks presence and on this surface it proved to be vulnerable to the end.

Tottenham to offer £40m for star who has fallen out with his current boss

Tottenham Hotspur are expected to lodge a big-money bid for one of Europe’s most sought-after players in the summer, according to a new report.

Tottenham inconsistencies shine light on transfer plans

If there’s one word to describe Tottenham this season, it’s inconsistent. Ange Postecoglou’s side has swung between unstoppable and absent from one week to the next—beating teams like Liverpool and Manchester City in all too rare one-offs, only to then suffer defeats against the likes of Leicester City and Everton.

That inconsistency was on display again last week. Fresh off three consecutive wins over Brentford, Manchester United and Ipswich Town, Spurs delivered a lackluster performance against City, falling 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A goal from Erling Haaland was enough to secure all three points for the visitors.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloureacts

Speaking after the match, which saw Spurs drop back down to 13th in the table, Postecoglou insisted there were plenty of positives to take from the defeat – most notablty the performances of young stars like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert.

“There’s definitely positives and I think you know, I keep saying there’s enormous growth that we’re witnessing before our eyes, even though we’re not getting the rewards for it right now,” he proclaimed.

“We’re disappointed, but like I said, in terms of performance, from my perspective anyway, there’s stuff in there where we can say, okay, we we’re going to take that forward and get to level we want to.”

Spurs bidding for Ademola Lookman

After what’s been a difficult season, Tottenham will no doubt be looking to bolster their squad in the summer, not only to add quality but also strength in numbers. According to reports in Spain, one man Spurs will be looking to acquire is Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman.

Spurs have apparently been scouting the Nigerian, who was named last year’s African Footballer of the Year, for several months. There are ‘offers estimated at around €45m (£40m) plus a number of bonuses’, although it is not clear if the bids have been made or just prepared for the summer, the latter of which seems more likely.

Lookman, 27, has been one of Europe’s top players over the past two seasons. Last year, he scored 17 goals and produced nine assists for Atalanta, including a memorable hat-trick in the Europa League final as they beat Bayer Leverkusen to win the trophy for the first time in their history. This term, Lookman has scored 17 goals and produced seven assists in 30 games across all competitions.

Despite being one of Atalanta’s key men, Lookman’s future at the Gewiss Stadium has recently come into question due to a public spat he had with manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The Italian coach had called Lookman “one of the worst penalty takers” after he missed a spot kick as Atalanta were dumped out of the Champions League at the hands of Club Brugge.

“He has a frankly terrible record even in training, he converts very few of them,” Gasperini said. “Retegui and De Ketelaere were there, but Lookman in a moment of enthusiasm after scoring decided to take the ball and that was a gesture I did not appreciate at all.”

Lookman hit back at his boss by calling his words “disrespectful”.
