Aston Villa star who lost the ball 16x was as bad as Bailey v Everton

Aston Villa failed to win their third game on the bounce at Goodison Park this weekend, as they were held to a drab 0-0 draw by Everton.

This was Unai Emery’s 11th away match of the season, yet they’ve only won four, which is extremely poor compared to their home form this campaign.

How Everton v Aston Villa played out

Villa thought they had taken the lead in the first half through a powerful strike from Alex Moreno, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The game was even in the first half, however, Emi Martinez will be thanked for his vital stop against Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a 1v1 scenario when the English attacker simply had to score.

In the second half, the Villans dominated the tie and racked up 0.81 xG, but they failed to really test Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal. The best chance of the half fell to Matty Cash, who had his low effort blocked inside the box.

Unai Emery

The Spaniard will be disappointed that his side were unable to pick up three points and further distance themselves from those fighting for a top-four spot. Some individuals were particularly frustrating in Merseyside, but in truth, it was a bad day at the office for all involved.

Leon Bailey had a relatively quiet afternoon and failed to impress, but John McGinn was the player who was far from his best and struggled against the physical Toffees midfield.

Leon Bailey’s game vs Everton by numbers

Bailey was fielded in his usual right midfield role in the 4-4-2 variant, but the Jamaican was marked out of the game by the relentless Vitaily Mykolenko, who didn’t give the forward an inch.

The winger wasn’t particularly wasteful in possession, as he had 79% pass accuracy, but other than one key pass, he failed to cause Sean Dyche’s backline any issues. This is highlighted by his xG of 0.07 and his expected assists (xA) of 0.05.

Bailey failed to make a single successful dribble in the game, and he also lost all three of his duels. The 26-year-old was ultimately subbed just after the hour mark, which sums up his level of threat throughout the game.

John McGinn’s stats vs Everton

McGinn is usually the energetic midfielder who demands high standards of himself and those around him, which is why he wears the captain’s armband. However, his performance against Everton was one of his worst this season.

Indeed, John Townley of Birmingham Mail offered the following summation at full-time: "McGinn is always dangerous on the half turn, but he was sloppy in possession today."

John McGinn

The Scotland international received a 6.8 rating via Sofascore, with the dynamic and hard-working Everton midfield trio running all over him. The table below highlights his performances using a handful of stats.

The biggest concern in the game was how wasteful the midfielder was in possession, especially when attempting to force the issue down the left-hand side. This led to him giving the ball away 16 times, the second most for a Villa player behind Moreno.

Furthermore, McGinn is usually tenacious out of possession, but today he failed to make a single defensive action bar one clearance. The 29-year-old also failed to win half of his individual battles on the field, as shown by the five out of ten ground duels won.

Nothing will come from this performance in terms of McGinn’s place in the side, but it was certainly an afternoon to forget for the Scottish midfielder.

Sunderland could hire Mowbray replacement who’s lost 8-0 this season

Interim Sunderland manager Mike Dodds spearheaded the Black Cats to a 2-1 win over West Brom in his first match in charge at the weekend, an ingenious substitution by the stand-in Sunderland boss completely changing the game.

Alex Pritchard being introduced into the contest was the catalyst the Championship hopefuls needed to overcome the Baggies, a short but sweet cameo off the bench saw the former Huddersfield Town man assist both Black Cats goals in the slim victory.

Sunderland star with fewer touches than Patterson stole the show vs WBA

Sunderland had an unlikely hero in their ranks drag them over the line to a 2-1 victory against West Brom.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 10, 2023

In the short term, it looks likely that Dodds will continue as manager of Sunderland, especially for Tuesday night's game versus Leeds United.

But, the ongoing rumour mill at the Stadium of Light is circulating that the Tyne and Wear giants might go for this shock Tony Mowbray replacement soon.

Paul Heckingbottom could be offered an immediate return to management at Sunderland according to rumours, even after a bruising experience managing Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Managers in the frame to replace Mowbray

Left-field faces such as Julien Sable, Kim Hellberg and Will Still are still the prominent names being reported to replace Mowbray in the Sunderland hot seat, but Heckingbottom's recent departure from the Blades means he's now a notable outsider for the vacant position.

The Yorkshire Post in the last few days has reported on the very real possibility of the 46-year-old being the next Black Cats manager. Heckingbottom has allegedly been installed as the favourite for the role after securing promotion to the top-flight as Sheffield United boss during his up-and-down tenure a striking achievement on his CV that Sunderland could well admire.

Despite that noteworthy promotion, Sunderland should steer clear of the dismissed manager with Heckingbottom falling short elsewhere of what ambitious chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus wants in a new managerial recruit after axing Mowbray controversially.

Paul Heckingbottom's managerial record

Heckingbottom's failures as a manager far outweigh any of his recent successes, failing to endear himself to the hardened Leeds United masses in a doomed spell in charge at Elland Road in 2018 whilst a short stint at Hibernian directly after also didn't go to plan.

The former Blades man would only win four of his 16 games in charge of the Whites before being put out of his misery, unable to handle the intense pressure of managing an EFL giant on that occasion.

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom.

That wouldn't bode well for Heckingbottom if he took over the reins at Sunderland, an expectant fanbase keen for their fallen club to return to the Premier League soon with a chairman at the Stadium of Light who is also impatient to get back to the promised land of the top-flight.

Heckingbottom's style at Sheffield United also wouldn't be an apt fit for the Black Cats, the 46-year-old boss favouring an organised and well-drilled approach over allowing the attacking players in his system room to breathe.

It was telling this season too that when Heckingbottom lost the likes of Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye, the well-oiled system that had won the Blades promotion to the Premier League completely fell apart – the one-time Leeds boss overly reliant on his stars to bail him out.

If he was appointed as Mowbray's successor, the concern would be that if stars Jack Clarke and Dan Neil were misfiring, Heckingbottom wouldn't be able to get a tune out of the other inexperienced players in the Black Cats camp.

This campaign – which saw Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp refer to the out-of-sorts manager as being in a 'very dark place' before his expected sacking – Heckingbottom's weaknesses as a boss were majorly exposed for all to see with Sheffield United way off the pace in the Premier League.

Losing 8-0 to Newcastle United at Bramall Lane was an all-time low for Heckingbottom, whilst a 5-0 loss to fellow promoted team Burnley was deemed the final straw for the scarred manager before being dismissed.

Appointing the 46-year-old would be a poor managerial decision right after Mowbray. Sunderland should instead wait it out for a manager more suited to their club than going after a boss still raw from his recent failures.

He also served as assistant coach to Gary Kirsten at India and South Africa.Upton will form Royals’ central coaching group along with former Debyshire quick Steffan Jones, who had been appointed the franchise’s fast-bowling coach last season, and director of cricket Zubin Bharucha. WHAT LEE SAID

Wrexham’s players are expecting another jaunt to Nevada in 2024, with Elliot Lee saying on the back of seeing the Welsh outfit wrap up a top-three finish in League Two: “I don’t know if they’ve [the co-owners] messaged anyone yet. We usually get a message from Ryan after a game so I’m sure he’ll message soon enough – they both will, to be fair. We’ve just told them to fire up the jet for Vegas!”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson did not head to Vegas alongside his players last summer, and he has been in contact with those calling shots behind the scenes. He said after seeing a 6-0 mauling of Forest Green Rovers confirm promotion: “Rob rang up – I don't think he was expecting me to answer – so I've had a great chat with him. Obviously him and Ryan would have loved to have been here today. They deserve a lot of credit obviously because the support they've given myself and all the staff and the backing they give all the players as well. They deserve this and I'm sure they will celebrating wherever they are in the US. Owning a football club is tough. It's not an easy job and you've got to savour these promotions.”

Ivorian seeing limited opportunitiesBehind Antony & Garnacho in pecking orderQuestions being asked of Ten HagWHAT HAPPENED?

The 21-year-old Ivory Coast international has been restricted to just 46 minutes of Premier League action this season. He has figured in two FA Cup fixtures, netting a dramatic winner in a memorable quarter-final clash with Liverpool, but remains stuck behind the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony in the pecking order.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT SHARPE SAID ABOUT AMAD

Former United winger Lee Sharpe believes the time has come for Amad to get a chance, telling : “He looks sharp and tidy. He got involved against Liverpool and scored the winner, so I don’t see why he can’t have a bit more time on the right wing for the side. You look at how Antony has struggled this season as well – sometimes when you’re struggling like that, it’s better to be left out of the team for a few weeks, even if he played well against Chelsea. If the manager maybe plays Amad instead and says, ‘you’ve got four or five games, it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes – just go out there and do your thing’, then that could give him a good opportunity to prove himself. He’s hungry and he looks sharp, so I think he can definitely be given a bit more of a go.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amad was left on the bench for United’s thrilling 4-3 defeat at Chelsea, with that contest seeing more questions asked of Erik ten Hag – with new stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe among those in attendance at Stamford Bridge. Sharpe added on the managerial debate at Old Trafford: “I think Sir Jim Ratcliffe needs to have these performances and results at the back of his mind when summer arrives. If Erik ten Hag isn’t making the decisions and playing the game in the way INEOS and Ratcliffe want it, then he may have other plans of bringing someone in and may want to look elsewhere. It’s a difficult one – do you give Ten Hag more time and more resources to try and kick on next season, or do you go with someone brand new and give them the money to spend?

"United are certainly not making enough strides forwards. I think it’s been the story of the season so far – they put in an outstanding performance against Liverpool in the FA Cup and followed it up with a shocking one against Brentford. The consistency just isn’t there. They’ve had to change the starting XI a lot because of injuries throughout the season, but it still doesn’t explain why they’re playing so poorly in certain games and getting completely outplayed by some teams. It’s definitely something that needs to be addressed by the manager and by INEOS at the end of the season. I’d personally give Ten Hag another 12 months, but we’ll see what happens between now and the start of next season."

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Shaw silenced a 43,615-crowd at Old Trafford last November after she dealt a mortal blow to United's hopes of making a comeback with a strike that would stay with her forever. After Katie Zelem put the hosts in front, City mounted a spirited comeback with Jill Roord and Lauren Hemp scoring in quick succession. But it was Shaw's persistent pressing that put both Maya Le Tissier and Earps to shame as City claimed the bragging rights in front of a hostile crowd.

  • WHAT SHAW SAID

In an interview with Shaw narrated the incident in detail.

“I’ll walk you through it," she began. "I just thought I’m gonna go for it (as she closed down Le Tissier). If it was me, I would have played the ball back first time but she (Le Tissier) takes a touch. It’s under her feet and then she plays a softer pass.

"I don’t see Mary yet. As I’m running on, I see her. I’m closer to the ball than her and she’s running straight onto it….So I’m not going to jump, I’m just gonna leave a leg…I was like, ‘Yesss!!!”

Immediately after the goal, the camera caught Earps' reaction as she went, "What the f***?”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

During the pre-match warmup, United fans handed a tough time to Shaw and Co. After the goal, it was payback time as she showed her dance moves to a frustrated crowd.

“We warmed up in that corner and the fans were giving us pure stick,” says Shaw. “Chloe (Kelly) said: ‘I love this!’ So when I scored I went over there and I was like, ‘OK, what are you gonna say now?’”

Anisa Mohammed stars with hat-trick to give West Indies 2-0 lead

The 30-year old offspinner took the ninth hat-trick in women’s T20Is to restrict South Africa to 101 for 8

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Sep-2018Anisa Mohammed broke open the game for West Indies•Getty ImagesLate strikes including a last-over hat-trick from Anisa Mohammed and a 72-run second-wicket stand between Natasha McLean and captain Stafanie Taylor ensured West Indies women continued their dominant run over their South African counterparts with a nine-wicket win at Tarouba. They now lead the five-match T20I series 2-0, following a closer 17-run victory in the first match. After restricting South Africa to 101 for 8, the hosts romped home with 27 balls to spare.Having elected to bowl, Taylor’s decision was rewarded early by offspinner Hayley Matthews, who dislodged both Lizelle Lee and Sune Luus for ducks. West Indies maintained their stranglehold, even as captain Dane van Niekerk and Chloe Tryon added 28 for the third wicket, with the run rate only marginally above three per over. Tryon was soon removed by Taylor for 21 to leave South Africa in further trouble at 32 for 3 in the 10th over.Van Niekerk, who batted deep into the innings for her painstaking 36 off 48 balls, was then involved in their most lucrative stand of 50 with Mignon du Preez (27) before becoming Mohammed’s first victim. Mohammed got the rest of her wickets, including the ninth hat-trick in women’s T20Is, in the final over of the innings that saw the fall of four wickets. She accounted for van Niekerk on the second ball of the over before removing Marizanne Kapp, Saarah Smith and Masabata Klaas on the last three deliveries of the innings to finish with 5 for 24, her third five-for in T20Is and second against South Africa.”It was really frustrating today,” van Niekerk said after the match. “Initially they bowled really well. The wicket was tacky and slow and not easy to get away. In these conditions you’ve to sum it up as quick as possible and find ways to score, [but] I don’t think we did that. It’s not a wicket where you come in and you swing from the hip. They bowl really well in their conditions, they set their fields well, we know how athletic they are. As a batting unit we need to earn the right to score on these wickets.”Needing just over five runs an over, West Indies began sedately with an opening stand of 30, before Matthews was caught off Luus for a 21-ball 17. There were no further hiccups, as McLean and Taylor picked up the run rate and shrugged off the remaining runs by the 16th over with an unbroken stand.

De Bruyne assisted goal against LiverpoolArgued with City bench after being taken offGuardiola explained reason for substituttionWHAT HAPPENED?

With City and Liverpool tied at 1-1 in the crucial Premier League clash at Anfield, De Bruyne was taken off with just over 20 minutes left to play. The attacking midfielder was visibly annoyed by the decision to swap him and was later seen discussing the matter with Guardiola while he sat on the bench. Guardiola has denied that there is an issue between the two and revealed he brought on Mateo Kovacic instead to boost his team's chances of keeping possession.

Asked about De Bruyne's frustration, Guardiola told : "That's good. Have a chance next game to prove it. We need a player who keeps the ball. Its not about pressing. Kovacic is really good at that. We were happy with Kevin. It's not a problem. We're fine."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

De Bruyne was pivotal in City taking the lead in the heavyweight showdown at Anfield when he whipped a dangerous cross from a corner towards the front post, where John Stones was able to divert it past Caoimhin Kelleher after 23 minutes. Despite the visitors' strong first-half showing, they were second best after the break as Liverpool pulled level from a penalty from Alexis Mac Allister after goalkeeper Ederson brought down Darwin Nunez and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

West Ham: Moyes must unleash 5 ft 9 ‘superstar’ alongside Paqueta

West Ham United kick off their EFL Cup campaign against Lincoln City away from the London Stadium this evening as they look to bounce back from their defeat at the weekend.

The Hammers were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League and now have a chance to get back to winning ways against lower-league opposition.

This cup clash with the League One side will provide David Moyes with the opportunity to give players vital minutes to keep them fresh and sharp for the upcoming Europa League and English top-flight matches to come.

One player who must be unleashed from the start is summer signing Mohammed Kudus, who joined from Dutch giants Ajax, as he could form an exciting partnership with Lucas Paqueta at the top end of the pitch.

How many chances has Paqueta created this season?

West Ham's brilliant Brazilian has created eight chances in six Premier League matches to go along with one in one Europa League outing so far.

Paqueta has showcased his ability to split open the opposition's defence to create an opportunity for one of his fellow attackers and has averaged an impressive Sofascore rating of 7.43 in the top-flight.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

James Ward-Prowse (7.62) is the only outfield player at the club with a higher average league Sofascore rating, which illustrates how impressive the former Lyon man has been in the middle of the park.

Kudus could benefit from the 26-year-old's creativity as the Ghana international can potentially provide a significant goal threat for the Hammers if he can replicate his form for Ajax.

How many goals did Kudus score for Ajax?

The 23-year-old maestro scored 27 goals in 87 matches in all competitions during his time with the Dutch side and that included 18 goals in 42 games last term.

Kudus racked up 11 goals and three assists in 19 Eredivisie starts throughout the 2022/23 campaign. Meanwhile, no West Ham player produced more than six Premier League goals last season.

This suggests that the talented youngster, who was dubbed "fantastic" and a "superstar" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has the potential to be an outstanding scoring option for Moyes in the final third if he can carry that form over to English football.

West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.

His first start against TSC in the Europa League last week showcased his threat at the top end of the pitch as the ex-Ajax star scored two goals in a 3-1 win for the Hammers.

The summer signing's outstanding full debut showed that he has what it takes to be a star within this West Ham team and it is now down to him to show that he can be consistent over the course of the season.

To do that, though, Moyes will need to offer him enough opportunities to find his rhythm and that is why the Scottish boss must unleash the Ghana international from the start this evening in order to get more minutes under his belt.

Playing him alongside a terrific creative threat like Paqueta could also provide the 5 foot 9 dynamo with the chances that he needs to find the back of the net against Lincoln.
