Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is a “big” fan of a £40 million ace in his squad, but Stamford Bridge officials could still opt to sell him in January.

Chelsea face Shamrock Rovers amid major Mudryk and Acheampong developments

The Blues face Shamrock Rovers in their final Europa Conference League game of the year tonight, but their face-off against the Irish minnows has been pushed into the background after major developments regarding Mykhailo Mudryk and Josh Acheampong.

He’s a real man in demand heading into the winter.

Mudryk has officially failed a drugs test, with the Ukraine international now handed a provisional ban from football after allegedly testing positive for meldonium through a urine sample (The Times).

The heart drug, which tennis superstar Maria Sharapova received a 15-month ban for ingesting in 2016, was apparently found in his system – with the FA subsequently suspending Mudryk from all footballing activity on the field.

The £100,000-per-week winger protests his innocence and said he would never “knowingly” take the substance, with Mudryk’s team now set to investigate how the alleged meldonium could’ve got into his system.

Meanwhile, other big news out of Chelsea is that BlueCo have finally tied down highly-rated young right-back Josh Acheampong with a new contract. Acheampong was frozen out of the Chelsea squad for a time due to his contractual stand-off, but talks then took a promising turn, with the 18-year-old sensation now putting pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2029.

Real Madrid were previously registering an interest in Acheampong when his future wasn’t no certain, but worries of the La Liga giants poaching Chelsea’s rising star have now been put to bed. While the defender’s future is secure, the same cannot be said of midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, who has been heavily linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door next month.

Enzo Maresca is a "big admirer" of Carney Chukwuemeka at Chelsea

Funnily enough, according to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs of TEAMtalk, Maresca is actually a “big admirer” of Chukwuemeka at Chelsea – but Todd Boehly and co are still open to any offers for the former Aston Villa gem who has failed to battle his way into the first-team regularly.

The 21-year-old hasn’t been included in a single Premier League matchday squad this season, with all of his total 130 minutes of playing time coming in the Carabao Cup and Conference League.

However, despite his lack of match action, it is believed that Chelsea will demand suitors pay around £40 million for his services – either in January or next summer.

“I like Carney Chukwuemeka because he is like an artist who comes onto the stage,” said Marcel Desailly on Chukwuemeka in 2023.

“He has got the ball. Now is my moment. Shine. You see the dribbling. He is sure about what he is going to do and he is clinical. I love it.”

Bukayo Saka to return for Real Madrid clash?! Arsenal target huge Champions League tie for England star's injury comeback

Saka has not played for Arsenal since December due to hamstring problemEngland star is 'stepping up' his training according to ArtetaArsenal optimistic Saka will be fit for quarter-final against RealFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Arteta offered a positive update on Saka's injury progress, having seen his star man sidelined for the last three months after tearing his hamstring against Crystal Palace on December 21st. The Arsenal boss revealed that Saka is due back at the training ground next week to increase the intensity of his rehabilitation and work with the ball at his feet in a competitive environment.

AdvertisementgettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal's form has taken a downturn during Saka's absence, particularly with further injuries to key stars such as Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. However, while the Gunners sit 15 points off leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, albeit with a game in hand, they progressed through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 9-3 aggregate win over PSV Eindhoven, where they will face La Liga giants Real Madrid hoping to have Saka back amongst their squad.

WHAT ARTETA SAID

"He is going to be here [at the Arsenal training ground] next week, hopefully more with ball at his feet than he has had," Arteta said "That will mean he is passing the ball and shooting and running and everything. He has done quite a lot already on the pitch working on his own. Next we need to arrange it with people around him in a more competitive training session and see how he goes with that.

"He's getting closer, he's stepping up and making a very good progress I would say. So, let's see when we start to throw him in with the team, how he reacts and how fit he can get quickly."

Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

Arsenal still have three important matches in the Premier League before they can turn their attention to Real Madrid, starting with a home match against Chelsea on Sunday. The international break will then provide a welcome recovery break for Arteta before games against Everton and Fulham prior to the first leg against Real at the Emirates in three weeks time.

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc inspire Pakistan collapse of 7 for 20

The home side were blown away in the final session as Australia earned a lead of 123

Tristan Lavalette23-Mar-2022Unplayable quicks Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc tore through Pakistan’s batting order with vicious reverse swing late on day three to engineer Australia’s stunning fightback and power them into unexpected control of the series deciding third Test. After being in a strong position at 214 for 2, Pakistan collapsed against torrid bowling from Cummins and Starc, who claimed nine wickets between them in a remarkable turnaround as Australia gained a 123-run first innings lead.A shocked Pakistan lost 7 for 20 in 10 overs to be dismissed for 268 with Cummins finishing with 5 for 56 and Starc 4 for 33 to turn the match on its head.Openers Usman Khawaja and David Warner survived three tricky overs before stumps as Australia gained a stranglehold in the decider of the historic series, the first played between the teams in Pakistan since 1998.Few could have predicted the late flurry of wickets after Pakistan had mostly blunted Australia’s disciplined bowling for more than two sessions. Wickets had been few and far between for Australia but they toiled hard and were rewarded when Starc produced firecrackers to clean bowl Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan, who had so memorably defied the tourists on the last day in Karachi. After a sedate first hour after tea, Fawad’s slump continued after being clean bowled by a cracking delivery from his nemesis Starc. While the rest of Pakistan’s specialist batters have struck tons in this batting-dominant series, Fawad has mustered just 22 runs from three innings after missing out on a hit on the flat Rawalpindi surface.Starc then produced an even better delivery from around the wicket to knock over Rizwan’s off stump and expose Pakistan’s longer tail with the hosts having entered the match with a five-pronged attack.Sensing Australia’s moment to gain a stranglehold, Cummins quickly snared the wickets of Sajid Khan, Nauman Ali and Hasan Ali to become the first quick in the series to claim a five-wicket haul. He was well supported by Starc, who had struggled with his rhythm on day two but was much better from the onset and reaped the rewards in spectacular fashion later in the day.Babar Azam continued his fine form but was part of the collapse•AFP/Getty ImagesIn a flash, punctuated by losing their last four wickets for no runs, Pakistan’s grip on the match had eroded as they had no answers to the scintillating reverse swing conjured by Cummins and Starc. Captain Babar Azam, who had played sweetly before the carnage, was left ashen-faced as he watched from the other end. Even Babar, who was coming off a herculean 196 to save the second Test, couldn’t thwart a red-hot Starc and he was the ninth wicket to fall leaving Pakistan’s hopes of a Test and series victory in tatters. After two topsy-turvy days, where little separated the teams, day three loomed as pivotal in the outcome of the historic series, which remains deadlocked after draws in Rawalpindi and Karachi. It had seemed like Pakistan were moving into a strong position after losing just two wickets in the first 47 overs of day three. The hosts had threatened to take the game away from Australia with Azhar Ali and in-form Abdullah Shafique combining for a 150-run partnership as they batted through the first session.Australia, however, kept toiling and spinner Nathan Lyon – who provided a lot of the heavy lifting during the second session – finally broke through after lunch with a faint edge off Shafique that was originally given not out after only Travis Head at silly point had appealed initially.Having wasted a review earlier and with just one left, Cummins gambled correctly as Shafique fell just short of a ton for the second straight innings. In front of his family in the terraces, an unmovable Azhar appeared to be marching towards his 20th Test century and first on his home ground before he fell for 78 late in the second session to a brilliant return catch by Cummins, who athletically clutched a one-hander while tumbling in his follow-through.Knowing the stakes, Cummins celebrated wildly and flung the ball in the air while Azhar’s dejected son watching on could only hang his head in disappointment. In his 94th test, Azhar fell short of an emotional hundred in the first Test played in Lahore since 2009 but did cross 7000 Tests runs to become the fifth Pakistan batter to reach the milestone. After some resistance from Babar, Cummins and Starc then lit a fuse under the match as Australia stormed into a commanding position to leave a previously festive crowd utterly shell-shocked.On Pakistan Day, Australia’s spearheads spoiled the party in an astonishing turnaround that has the tourists well poised for a series victory.

The match started an hour after the scheduled kick-off time as Al-Nassr's team bus broke down en route to The King Abdulaziz Sports City. The visitors started the game without two star players Marcelo Brozovic and Jhon Duran who missed due to suspension. To make matters worse, star defender Aymeric Laporte was forced to leave the pitch with an injury in the 12th minute of the match as Salem Al-Najdi replaced him.

Al-Nassr failed to make any major impact in the first 45 minutes as the hosts dominated proceedings. Cristiano Ronaldo got a chance on the stroke of half-time to break the deadlock as he unleashed a powerful shot but Al-Owaishir did well to make a diving save and deny the superstar from scoring the opener.

Al-Wehda's resistance did not last long though, as Ronaldo finally scored just three minutes into the second half. Angelo Gabriel sent in an inch-perfect curling cross from the right flank and the Portugal icon comfortably found the back of the net with a header.

Just eight minutes after conceding the goal, Al-Wehda had a golden opportunity to restore parity in the game when Morad Mohammad Abdullah Khodari found himself in a scoring position from close range. The forward, initially, did well to control the ball but his final delivery was way off target.

In the dying moments of the match, Al-Nassr were awarded a penalty when an Al-Wehda player used his arm to block Ronaldo's free-kick. Sadio Mane took the resulting spot-kick and found the back of the net to secure the victory.

    THE MVP

Ronaldo was kept silent for the majority of the first half and his first attempt at goal, on the stroke of half-time was saved by the goalkeeper. The lethal goalscorer, however, rose to the occasion just after the break and ensured his side walked away with all three points with a clinical header.

    THE BIG LOSER

Abdullah Khodari had the easiest chance of the match to score the equaliser less than 10 minutes after Al-Wehda conceded. He initially did well to control the ball inside the Al-Nassr box and found himself in a goalscoring position, but his final shot was off target from a close range.

Philippe and Henriques light up Sydney Sixers as Melbourne Stars slumped to heaviest ever loss

Steve O’Keefe picked up 4 for 14, including two in the opening over to ensure Stars were never in the hunt

Sydney Sixers laid down an early benchmark in their quest for a hat-trick of BBL titles with an utterly dominant display against an overwhelmed Melbourne Stars, who narrowly avoided the lowest total in the competition’s history but still crashed to the largest ever defeat.Sixers’ top three took charge after they had been put in with Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques launching powerful half-centuries in a second-wicket stand of 102 in 8.3 overs. They took Sixers’ to their highest BBL total during an innings that never lost momentum. They were 0 for 40 after the four-over powerplay, 1 for 92 after ten overs, took 33 off the two Power Surge overs and in total 121 off the last ten.Faced with an enormous chase, and without the injured Marcus Stoinis, Stars lost two wickets in the opening over against Steve O’Keefe who went on to claim career-best figures. A short while after Sixers had set a new high score, Stars subsided to their own record low. Games don’t come much more one-sided.Philippe starts with a bang
It was a rather chastening winter for Philippe in his first introduction to the international set-up. He got set twice against New Zealand, but then in the more unaccustomed conditions of West Indies and Bangladesh, his highest score was 13 in five innings to miss the World Cup squad. However, in the early part of the season, he has shown excellent form for Western Australia and back in Sixers’ colours he produced a superb display. He was lagging behind James Vince during the initial stages but was soon up to speed to bring up a 33-ball fifty. Then he really cut loose with a brace of sixes in the first of the Power Surge overs against Sam Rainbird, the first of them onto the roof of the pavilion. When he moved into the 80s in the 16th over, Sixers’ first BBL hundred was on the cards but he then lost the strike to Henriques and perished to a catch at deep midwicket. Still, he had set an early marker.Captain cuts loose
Henriques is one of the most impressive leaders in Australian cricket. He was restricted to five games last season due to being in Australia’s bio-bubble Test squad, but it’s unlikely he will feature this season so should have a full Sixers’ campaign. He had a fantastic platform to build on after the opening stand of 90 between Philippe and Vince. He certainly made the most of it after looking in good touch during a warm-up game against Sydney Thunder last week. His first boundary came off his fourth ball and he reached a 29-ball fifty with a mighty straight drive off Sam Elliott. He finished one short of his career-best.Stars’ bowling looks thin
Heading into the season, the major questions were around Stars’ attack despite the presence of Adam Zampa. Their side for this game also suffered the loss of Stoinis with a side strain. The pace bowling is especially stretched with Billy Stanlake and Liam Hatcher injured while Nathan Coulter-Nile is unavailable. Elliott and Brody Couch, on his birthday, made their T20 debuts as did Pakistan left-arm wristspinner Syed Faridoun who was playing the first professional match of his career. Couch’s two overs went for 15 and 13 although he did have Vince dropped off a skier that neither the bowler nor wicketkeeper Peter Nevill could cling onto. Couch did show good composure in sending down the final over and opened his wicket tally.Blown away
If this does prove to be O’Keefe’s final season, he has started in a grand manner by claiming Joe Clarke and Nick Larkin in his first over. Stars’ slimmest of hopes rested with Glenn Maxwell but he was cleaned up by Sean Abbott inside the powerplay to leave them 3 for 18. O’ Keefe could do no wrong as he claimed a spectacular catch at deep third to remove Nevill and a ball later Hayden Kerr found himself on a hat-trick. He was not immediately given the chance of his third, and instead, Abbott got the ball and claimed two wickets in three balls. In a final sign of how the game panned, O’Keefe bowled a hat-trick ball with two close catchers. Tournaments aren’t won and lost on the opening night but Stars will want to move on from this one quickly.

David Warner turns to concrete pitches for batting rhythm

David Warner has laughed off talk about poor form and believes he is close to finding his best touch, having swapped the practice nets in the UAE for synthetic and concrete surfaces.Warner, who has played five innings in all cricket since April with scores of 0, 2, 0, 1 and 14, revealed the training tactic – something he has previously used at home – was an attempt to overcome nets which are showing the effects of a lot of traffic over the last few months and, he believes, risk bringing bad habits into his batting. He spoke with the Australian coaching staff on tour about making use of the different surfaces, which are available in Dubai, having received a text from batting coach Trent Woodhill who is a long-time mentor. Warner has had balls hurled at him with the ‘wanger’, or dog-thrower, at up to 145kph so that he can get his feet “dancing” ahead of facing a Sri Lanka attack that possesses considerable pace.”One thing that should be noted is these practice wickets have been up for close to 12 weeks now, so training is quite difficult on them as well,” Warner said. “At the moment I’m training on some synthetic wickets and polished concrete to get timing and rhythm and moving my feet so that’s helping me.”When you are practicing on low wickets that aren’t great it gets you into sticky positions in the games when you are on better wickets. You have to get your brain working again with your feet and hands to get into good positions.”You want to feel bat on ball, but it also makes you move your feet more. We are so used to the ball coming onto the bat and when you do that and are moving, you start dancing in the game. If you are practicing bad habits at training because you aren’t able to get that volume in, you have to go back to the basics.”Warner felt positive signs during his 14 off 15 balls against South Africa which included three crisp boundaries before he drove to backward point. He lamented his lack of conviction in the stroke that brought his downfall, saying he was too focused on seeing out what was Kagiso Rabada’s third over of his opening spell.”In hindsight I should have played it over the top, but I pushed it to backward point,” he said. “My feet were moving, I got into great positions, but my awareness should have been to go with it. Felt I was one boundary away from having a good innings”I actually think people talking about my form is quite funny. I laugh at the matter. I’ve played hardly any cricket. Had two games in the IPL and then warm-up games are warm-up games for a reason. The other day I got my benchmark as where I should be at with my feet.”Warner believes the T20 game is not purely about the volume of runs a batter scores but how they fit into the broader team gameplan. “Individuals have to play their roles. It’s not necessarily a big score, it’s how you get 20, 30 or 40 and then if you get that big score it puts you in a great position. You’ve just got to make sure you aren’t soaking up too many balls.”There is also scrutiny of Warner’s opening partner Aaron Finch, who is another to make use of the concrete wickets, after he returned from knee surgery in this tournament. Finch carved to third man for a duck against South Africa although his overall T20I returns in 2021 are far from poor with 324 runs at 32.40, albeit his strike-rate of 126.56 is his lowest for any calendar year since he made his debut. The opening game was the first time Warner and Finch had opened in a T20I since last September against England. They were a key part of the success Australia had in the format in the 2019-2020 season, but that was followed by Warner’s injury last year against India and subsequent unavailability. “It almost seems like we’ve been in retirement and come back after the time we’ve had off,” he said.
