Aston Villa’s 9/10 star was as good as Watkins & McGinn vs Lille

After breezing past Ajax with ease in the previous round, Aston Villa welcomed Ligue 1 side Lille to Villa Park on Thursday night.

Unai Emery’s side set out with one mission in mind: to go to France with a lead, and they certainly achieved that, defeating the visitors 2-1.

The Villans could not have gotten off to a better start, opening the scoring in the 13th minute, and just before the hour mark, they had a two-goal advantage.

Unai Emery

It looked set to be the perfect night, however, a late Lille goal did spoil the party slightly, making it all to play for in the second leg.

But in truth, the outcome could have been much worse if it weren’t for one star who was even better than John McGinn and Ollie Watkins.

McGinn and Watkins’ performances vs Lille

As usual, Villa lined up in the Spaniard’s 4-4-1-1 formation, with the attack being led by none other than Watkins, with the support of McGinn just behind him.

Both players combined brilliantly for the first goal of the game, with the England attacker meeting the Scot’s inch-perfect corner kick to power the ball home via his head, scoring his 25th goal of the campaign.

After the break, Villa’s second goal once again heavily involved McGinn, as the provider turned goal-scorer, placing the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box with a controlled first-time finish.

To add further context to just how influential the dangerous duo were on the night, the number 11 was handed an 8/10 match rating by Birmingham World, while the 29-year-old was given an impressive 9/10, but they still weren’t the most important on the field.

Emi Martinez statistics against Lille

The Villa faithful may already believe that Emiliano Martinez is the best goalkeeper in the world, hence their common chant, but he truly showed his quality yesterday.

The Argentine is an extremely important player to Emery’s side, not just because of his ability to keep the ball out of the back of the net but also because of his elite mentality, which will prove to be vital throughout the rest of the tournament.

In Birmingham World’s player ratings article, Martinez was handed a joint-highest 9/10 rating, stating, “absolutely outstanding to get his team out of trouble so often,” and although he was eventually unable to keep a clean sheet, the World Cup winner pulled off similar heroics to the ones he displayed in Qatar against France, coming out on top in crucial moments.

Aston Villa'sEmilianoMartinez

Throughout the tie, Martinez looked confident, comfortable, and relaxed, as shown by his pass accuracy of 90% and his 40 touches in the table below, which enabled Villa to not give possession away cheaply.

However, it's clear that it was his shot-stopping ability that deservedly got him the plaudits, as he made six saves in the tie, all of them from attempts inside the penalty area.

Most impressively, the 31-year-old had a goal prevented of 1.67, which is a brilliant indicator of just how good the chances were that he was denying, and shows that Villa could have drawn or lost the game without his heroics.

Overall, without Martinez in between the sticks, there’s no way that Villa would be going to Lille with the advantage, and although the goal-scorers tend to take the headlines, the Villa fanbase will certainly know who their real hero was with his colossal display in goal.

Man Utd planning on splashing out £2 billion to build new 100,000-seater stadium instead of redeveloping Old Trafford – with inspiration taken from SoFi Stadium NFL venue in Los Angeles

Manchester United are reportedly considering splashing out £2 billion ($2.5bn) on a new 100,000-seater stadium, rather than redeveloping Old Trafford.

The proposed project would take around six years to complete. No decision on the way forward for United will be made until the end of the calendar year – with consultation set to take place with supporters and the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, which includes Lord Sebastian Coe and Gary Neville.

United’s latest plan incudes the construction of a “stadium district” that could include a hotel, other amenities an an immersive entertainment centre. Inspiration is being taken from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which has become home to the Rams and Chargers NFL franchises.

The Red Devils faced Premier League rivals Arsenal at that venue during their summer tour of the United States, with former striker Andy Cole saying: “A new or redeveloped stadium at Old Trafford could be the focal point for revitalisation of the surrounding area. Manchester United fans and everyone in the north of England deserves a truly world-class stadium, and SoFi set the standard to aim for. This is the kind of arena the best players in the world want to be playing in and fans want to be experiencing.”

reports that United are leaning towards a new build as giving Old Trafford a facelift will be tricky. It would only cost between £1bn and £1.bn to complete that project, but capacity would need to be reduced to 40,000 or 50,000 while work is carried out on a venue that has been in place since 1910.

England consider Chris Silverwood as coach hunt nears conclusion

Gary Kirsten prospects fade with ECB closing in on naming successor to Trevor Bayliss

George Dobell05-Oct-2019Chris Silverwood would appear to be back in contention for the role of England’s head coach, as the ECB continues to examine its options to replace Trevor Bayliss.Silverwood has always been a strong candidate. As the team’s current bowling coach, he has developed an excellent relationship with the current crop of players and has a good history as head coach having led Essex to the Championship title in 2017. But he remains somewhat nervous around the media and was, at the start of this recruitment process, seen as the next-but-one choice for the role. But with Alec Stewart, the preferred candidate for the role, having pulled out of the process in recent days, the ECB has been forced to look again.Gary Kirsten, who enjoyed great success as head coach with India and South Africa, was thought to be the favourite, but is understood to have given an underwhelming presentation during his interview on Wednesday. There may also be some reservations about Kirsten’s initial ambivalence – he originally notified the ECB that he would only be interested if the role was split between red and white-ball coaches – and the fact his enthusiasm was revived only after he was sacked from his coaching position in the IPL.The decision ultimately lies with the director of England men’s cricket, Ashley Giles. He has previously admitted he would prefer to appoint an English candidate and has referenced the importance of understanding team culture and reinforcing the sense of pride and unity inherent in representing the side.Silverwood, as a former England player and an important figure in recent improvements in team culture, is therefore looking a stronger candidate than ever. Kirsten, having taken India to a World Cup and South Africa to No. 1 in the Test rankings, remains a persuasive candidate, however, leaving Giles with a tricky decision to make over the coming days. An appointment is anticipated within a week or so.Stewart is understood to have informed the ECB last weekend that he was unable to pursue his interest in the position having decided the commitment to touring was incompatible with his family responsibilities. He remains as Surrey’s director of cricket.

Predicted Leeds XI vs Bristol City with "iron" dynamo and no Roberts

Leeds United ended the January transfer window with a signing as they confirmed the arrival of Connor Roberts on loan from Premier League side Burnley.

The right-back has come in to bolster their options at the back after Djed Spence was sent back to Tottenham Hotspur and Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough.

However, the deal was not completed in time for him to be available for selection for the club's clash with Bristol City in the Championship this evening.

The Whites return to league action at Ashton Gate tonight and Roberts will not be named in the starting XI or squad after his late move to Elland Road.

Daniel Farke could, though, make up four alterations from the line-up that was selected against Plymouth Argyle in the 1-1 FA Cup draw last weekend.

With that in mind, here is our predicted Leeds XI to take on Bristol City ahead of the weekend's fixtures…

1 Illan Meslier

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Starting off between the sticks, Illan Meslier could retain his place in goal. The French shot-stopper has been the head coach's first-choice stopper throughout the campaign, with 27 league starts, and there is nothing to suggest that will change this evening.

2 Sam Byram

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

At right-back, Sam Byram could switch over from left-back, where he started against Plymouth, as Roberts is ineligible to play and Archie Gray has only recently returned to training, which means that the teenage whiz could be utilised off the bench.

3 Joe Rodon

Leeds United's loan defender Joe Rodon.

Joe Rodon could keep his position in the heart of the defence. The Wales international has started 25 Championship matches for the Whites this season and been a dominant force at the back for Farke with a duel success rate of 68%.

This shows that opposition attackers have found it difficult to get the better of him throughout the season since his move on loan from Spurs.

4 Ethan Ampadu

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Ethan Ampadu could return to the defence, after a midfield outing against Plymouth, as Pascal Struijk has been ruled out once again through injury.

Liam Cooper started against Argyle but Farke could return to his Welsh centre-back pairing that helped to keep a clean sheet against Norwich last time out in the league.

5 Junior Firpo

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.

The first player to come back into the starting XI could be Junior Firpo for Jamie Shackleton, whose place at right-back could be taken up by Byram.

Four assists in his last four Championship appearances have cemented the former Barcelona gem's position at the back for Farke and he should return this evening after being rested for the cup.

He has provided a fantastic attacking outlet down the left flank and could bomb forward to create opportunities for the attacking players to find the back of the net.

6 Ilia Gruev

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

Another player who could keep their place is Ilia Gruev in midfield. He has started the last four matches for Leeds in all competitions and caught the eye against Plymouth.

The Bulgaria international completed 91% of his attempted passes throughout the match and created two chances for his teammates, and will be hoping for another strong display today.

7 Glen Kamara

joe-rodon-glen-kamara-leeds-opinion

Alongside Gruev, Farke could bring Glen Kamara back into the starting XI. Ampadu's move back to centre-back would free up a space in the middle of the park for him to return.

The Finland international, who former boss Neil McCann claimed is made of "iron", has been a midfield titan for Leeds so far this season with a superb pass success rate of 93% in the Championship, which shows that he rarely gives the ball away.

8 Jaidon Anthony

Leeds winger Jaidon Anthony.

Regular starter Dan James has been ruled out through injury and this has opened the door for Jaidon Anthony to keep his place in the XI after his stunning goal against Plymouth.

The on-loan Bournemouth forward cut inside from the left to score a special goal in the FA Cup but could switch over to the right flank to cover for the Welsh winger this evening.

9 Georginio Rutter

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

In the number ten position, Georgino Rutter should start once again. The 21-year-old magician has created 18 'big chances' chances and registered nine assists in 27 Championship starts for Leeds this season.

He has the quality to consistently unpick opposition defences to create high-quality chances for his teammates to score, which is why the former Hoffenheim man is perfectly suited to the attacking midfield role.

10 Crysencio Summerville

Crysencio Summerville.

Crysencio Summerville has been passed fit to play and should be brought straight back into the starting XI to replace Wilfried Gnonto, as he has been a shining light in the league this season.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutch whiz ranks highly among his positional peers in a number of key attacking metrics in the Championship.

The 22-year-old sensation has produced 12 goals, seven assists, and 13 'big chances' created in 26 league appearances for Leeds so far this season. This shows that he has the quality to be the match-winner if at his best this evening against the Robins.

Sky Sports: Liverpool keen on "special" 4-2-3-1 manager to replace Klopp

Liverpool are believed to be interested in bringing in a "special" and "unique" manager as Jurgen Klopp's replacement, according to a new update.

Liverpool manager latest

Reds supporters are still trying to process the news that Klopp will be departing at the end of the season, following his shock revelation on Friday. The 56-year-old seemingly feels as though he has come as far as he can, in terms of being at his best and providing the maximum amount of energy in the job, not wanting to stay on past his sell-by date.

It is arguably one of the biggest managerial stories in years, with many expecting him to remain as Liverpool boss until at least 2026, and FSG now have the huge task of finding a successor, which could be one of the hardest jobs any owner has had in some time.

Former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso has emerged as a front-runner to take charge at Anfield this summer, with the Spaniard working wonders at Bayer Leverkusen currently, guiding his side to the top of the Bundesliga table, albeit only by two points after Saturday's 0-0 draw at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Ange Postecoglou and Julian Nagelsmann have also been backed as contenders, too, and now another name has been thrown into the mix.

Liverpool want Roberto De Zerbi

According to a new update from Sky Sports Italia, Liverpool are keen on making Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi their next manager, with FSG monitoring him closely.

The 44-year-old has impressed greatly in his current role since replacing Graham Potter at the Amex Stadium, and he looks to be a strong contender to come in and fill the huge void that will be left by Klopp.

De Zerbi certainly stands out as a great option for Liverpool, not only because he has shone so much at Brighton to date, but due to his style of play having similarities to Klopp, in terms of relentless pressing and possession-based football. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is a big admirer, too, recently saying of him:

"20 years is many years but the way I've seen I've never seen in 20 years. He's so special and unique. Using the keeper as a main process to move the opponents I've never seen for a long time. Young players with Ferguson, Enciso, Buonanotte, many experienced ones. How they commit, that helps create the space for the players to get the ball. It's so nice to watch."

This is high praise from Klopp's biggest managerial rival during his time at Liverpool, further showing why De Zerbi, who plays a 4-2-3-1 system, could be the ideal choice to come in, and he is undefeated in four matches against the Reds, winning and drawing two games apiece.

This high-profile manager is believed to hold a deep admiration for Liverpool.

The general consensus does seem to be that Alonso is the standout option, however, knowing the club so well and understanding the city, not to mention looking like one of the most exciting young managers in European football currently.

O’Neil and Wolves eye "red-hot" Borja Mayoral to solve striker problem

Wolves' early business in the January transfer window has left Gary O'Neil with a clear area of need that must be addressed before the deadline at the start of February. Two strikers have left Molineux on loan, with Sasa Kalajdzic joining Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt and Fabio Silva heading north of the border to sign for Rangers.

You couldn't really describe either of the duo as key players – they started just four Premier League games between them, and that's why they were both made available – but what they did offer O'Neil was depth, and now he must replenish his centre-forward ranks. Fortunately for Wolves fans, it looks like the club are hard at work at finding a replacement.

Wolves battle Palace and Arsenal for Mayoral

According to TEAMtalk, Wolves are interested in Getafe striker Borja Mayoral. They've been keeping "close tabs" on him and could make an offer this month to furnish O'Neil with the "new focal point" he desires. It's also noted that Mayoral shares the same agent as Wolves defender Hugo Bueno, and the Midlands outfit may be able to capitalise on that pre-existing relationship if they decide to move forward with a deal.

They're not the only Premier League side in the race, though. Crystal Palace have also been watching him, and while Arsenal are admirers too, it's thought to be "unlikely" that he joins Mikel Arteta's title-chasers this month. Mayoral is apparently valued at £20m, with Getafe sticking to their financial model of selling players for a considerable profit. The Spaniard only cost them around £8.5m when he joined from Real Madrid in 2022.

Clinical Mayoral can combine with Wolves frontline

A product of Los Blancos' youth academy, Mayoral had loan spells with Wolfsburg, Levante and Roma before he eventually settled with Getafe. He's been a big hit for the La Liga club, scoring 29 goals in 78 games, including an impressive 14 in 22 this season.

Journalist Zach Lowy has described his form this term as "red-hot", while transfer insider Dean Jones has seen enough to bill him a "goal machine". That moniker is justified when you consider that only Real's Jude Bellingham (13) has out-scored him in La Liga this season, with Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann (11) and Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski (eight) among those lagging behind his tally of 12.

He's not just up there in Spain either – he's also eighth in the overall leaderboard for Europe's big five leagues, edging out Wolves' primary marksman Hwang (10).

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

It should be noted that Mayoral has buttressed his tally with four penalties, but it's not as if he's had an easy ride. He's actually out-performed his xG by 3.3 this season, which makes him the fourth-most clinical player in his league.

And to increase his appeal to O'Neil even further, there's more to his game than just goals. He ranks between the 70th and 83rd percentile, set against fellow forwards in comparable leagues, for passes attempted per 90 (24.93), pass completion (76.1%) and progressive passes per 90 (2.73), which shows his propensity for dropping deep to link-up with teammates. For £20m, the 26-year-old could be a steal.

The England international did pick up a shoulder problem in early November, after suffering a dislocation, and has had to manage that ailment ever since. Opponents have found that task difficult this season, with Bellingham registering 22 goals across all competitions.
