McSweeney hits maiden first-class hundred, Weatherald cracks own century

Tasmania wicketkeeper Jake Doran left the field feeling unwell after testing positive to Covid-19 and was replaced by Tim Paine on day one of the Sheffield Shield clash against South Australia.South Australia batters Jake Weatherald and Nathan McSweeney scored centuries to put their side in a solid position at 8 for 309 having been sent in to bat by Tasmania.Tasmania named former Test skipper Paine as 12th man but he was brought into the game as a substitute wicketkeeper when Doran left the playing arena.Doran had felt fine at the start of play and took an early catch but was replaced by Paine after taking ill. Paine, who will not be allowed to bat, took two neat catches.Weatherald made 100 and McSweeney (118) scored his maiden first class century.Peter Siddle, sporting a peroxide blonde hairstyle, was a constant threat on his way to 4 for 59 from 25 probing overs.Weatherald and McSweeney combined for a 149-run stand for the third wicket after Siddle struck early to remove Henry Hunt and Daniel Drew.Left-hander Weatherald struck 16 boundaries, including two sixes, and was particularly savage through the off side in a confident counter-attacking innings.McSweeney offered sensible support and was an excellent foil for his more aggressive batting partner before upping the ante. The 23-year-old brought up his century with a sweet on drive from the bowling of spinner Jarrod Freeman. It was a moment to savour for the former Australia Under-19s representative after he was stranded on 99 not out in March when he hit the winning runs in a five-wicket Shield win over NSW.South Australia were 6 for 196 just after tea but McSweeney received excellent support from in-form allrounder Benjamin Manenti and Nathan McAndrew.Weatherald said he was delighted to find form against a class attack.”This year has been a bit of a struggle for me with the bat so it was good to walk out there and play freely and score some runs,” he said. “[McSweeney] was able to absorb an amazing amount of pressure … and batted really well.”Tasmania sit second on the Shield table behind Western Australia after a hard-fought four-wicket win over Victoria in their most recent match. South Australia are second-last with two losses and three draws so far this season.

'Be aggressive but also focus on conditions and situations' – Laxman's mantra for T20Is

Laxman: ‘Hardik has an exemplary work ethic’

VVS Laxman is keen to see India play an aggressive brand of white-ball cricket in New Zealand, but he also hopes that the young batting group will show enough game smarts and situational awareness at the same time.”In T20 cricket, it’s important to be aggressive,” Laxman said on the eve of the opening T20I in Wellington, “and we have the guys who have this ability to express themselves. So that’s the message from the captain and myself: be aggressive, but also focus on conditions and situations, and use that experience.”Yes, our regular top order of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli isn’t here, but the players who have been selected have played a lot of international cricket, especially T20 cricket.”Related

Laxman, who has stepped in for the rested Rahul Dravid after India’s T20 World Cup campaign where they lost in the semi-final. also talked about the need for specialists in white-ball cricket going forward.”There’s definitely a lot of cricket being played, there’s no doubt about that,” he said, touching upon India selecting a young squad for the tour. “India is very fortunate to have so many players to choose from. As a team management and selection committee member, you have to be mindful of when to give breaks to certain players. Breaks are important, to not only physically rejuvenate but also mentally.”India is lucky to have that kind of bench, a pool of players to choose from. I think that will be the case going forward, especially in white-ball cricket, you require specialist players. Going forward, in T20s you will see a lot more T20 specialists, but managing their workload and choosing players from the pool we have is a blessing Indian cricket has.”1:55

Hardik: We don’t need to prove anything to anyone

Laxman also gave a ringing endorsement of Hardik Pandya’s leadership credentials, having previously worked with him on the tour of Ireland earlier this year. Prior to that, Hardik led unheralded Gujarat Titans to a title win in their inaugural season at the IPL.Hardik’s mature leadership, selection and decision-making under pressure earned him plaudits from several quarters at that time. Now, there has been a growing chorus within Indian cricket circles over the need to hand him the T20I captaincy looking ahead to the next 20-over World Cup in 2024.”He’s a fabulous leader,” Laxman said. “We’ve seen what he has done at Gujarat in the IPL. Someone taking on the leadership role in the first year itself and winning the Cup is no mean achievement. I have spent time with him from the Ireland series. He is not only tactically good but also very calm on the field. That’s very important when you’re playing at the highest level, because there will be situations where you will be under pressure. That’s when as a leader you have to be calm.

“But also, his presence in the dressing room and his work ethics are exemplary. The way he leads on the field is fabulous. He is a players’ captain; he is very approachable. All players confide in him, and that’s something I really like about him as captain. He leads by example on and off the field.”Among those he is excited about going forward is Shubman Gill, who is the only uncapped member in the format in the 16-member T20I squad. In many ways, Gill is returning to where it all began. It was in New Zealand that Gill announced himself to the world with a Player-of-the-Tournament performance during India’s title-winning run in the Under-19 World Cup in 2018. Exactly a year later, it was here that he made his ODI debut. Now, a T20I debut beckons.Coincidentally, Gill also played a key role in Hardik’s Titans winning the IPL title. He was their second-highest run-getter, making 483 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 132.32. In ODIs, since July 2022, he has scored three half-centuries and a century in nine innings; the kind of form that puts him in the reckoning to be a back-up opener as India build towards the 50-over World Cup next year.”It’s very clear he’s one of the most talented players India have,” Laxman said. “In the opportunities he has had at the highest level, he has shown what a class player he is. Slowly and gradually, he is becoming a very consistent performer, a match-winner. He has a great future ahead of him.”

According to reports from discussions between Cunha’s representatives and Manchester United have already taken place, and the talks are said to have progressed smoothly. United have now emerged as frontrunners in the race for the 25-year-old's signature, ahead of rival interest from Chelsea and Arsenal. Now, reports, sources close to the player suggest that he is "optimistic" that a deal will go through.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Manchester United have traditionally shown restraint in exceeding the £60 million mark for individual signings, particularly under their current financial strategy, they appear prepared to make an exception for Cunha. The proposed transfer is expected to be structured with staggered payments to ease financial pressure, bringing the total package to around £62.5 million ($84 million).

  • DID YOU KNOW?

With 16 goals in 31 appearances for Wolves, the Brazilian has proven himself to be a consistent and dynamic forward option. Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has publicly praised Cunha’s capabilities, labelling him as “a player of real quality” during his pre-match press duties ahead of United’s narrow 1-0 loss to Wolves last week. Amorim has been utilizing a 3-4-2-1 system, and Cunha is expected to be an integral figure, operating in one of the two attacking midfield roles behind the striker.

Cunha isn't the only striker on United’s summer wishlist. Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap has also emerged as a player of interest. The young forward is understood to have a £30 million ($40m) release clause that will become active should Ipswich’s relegation to the Championship be confirmed.

With United’s on-field displays continuing to disappoint, a significant reshaping of the squad appears to be on the horizon. Club insiders suggest that several departures are being considered to fund incoming transfers. Notably, the potential exits of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony – each of whom is currently out on loan – could bring in significant revenue to balance the books.

"World-class" Arsenal ace considering January exit as agents meet with club

While Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta arguably cannot afford to let regulars depart in the middle of a Premier League title race, there are some members of his squad who face uncertain futures.

Arsenal prepare for FA Cup clash against Man United

A lot of the talk at the Emirates Stadium this week has been centered around January and whether Arsenal will indeed back Arteta with quality additions in a bid to boost their chances of winning a first domestic title in over 20 years.

Arteta won his first trophy during his debut season in charge of the Gunners that year, coming from behind to beat Chelsea at an empty Wembley Stadium amid the pandemic.

Since then, Arteta has only won two Community Shields, and the pressure is on Arsenal’s manager to deliver more major silverware, over five years after he was appointed to replace Unai Emery.

“It’s a massive part of our history, we’ve won it 14 times and it is a competition very attached to us,” said Arteta on the FA Cup’s importance to Arsenal.

“It’s a beautiful game to play against a massive club, and a very special occasion as well with the amount supporters that they’re going to bring, so it’s a very big game.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetaapplauds fans after the match

“The memory of winning something and celebrating and sharing it with your people is the ultimate goal. I will never forget the process and the people that you meet, but overall I have great memories about the competition.”

If Arteta is to deliver trophies this season, he will need every star man available, especially considering the bad luck that they’ve had with injuries this season. That being said, there are those who could take their future into their own hands.

Thomas Partey and Jorginho are out of contract at the end of this season, with there being no sign of renewals for either player.

Jorginho considering January exit from Arsenal

According to ESPN, it is believed Jorginho is considering a January exit from Arsenal, and his sights are set on potentially joining one of two clubs in Brazil.

Palmeiras and Flamengo are thought to be the only South American clubs he’ll entertain this month. The 33-year-old’s agents have already held a meeting with Palmeiras, and have offered the Brasileirao side the chance to sign him.

It is stressed that there is no formal offer on the table or transfer talks underway yet, but Jorginho’s representatives are gauging possible landing spots for the ex-Chelsea star, who is a favourite among his teammates.

“I know him a lot, so for me, it is nice to play with him, he knows me well,” said Arsenal striker Kai Havertz on Jorginho last season.

“It makes life easy for me, he is a world-class player.”

The £110,000-per-week midfielder played an important role in Arsenal’s first team towards the back-end of 2023/24 and has featured regularly as a reliable utility man under Arteta this campaign.

Adam Rossington's fastest fifty makes it four from four for London Spirit

A 15-ball half-century makes light work of 144 target as Superchargers slump to third defeat

ECB Reporters Network14-Aug-2022

Adam Rossington smashed the Hundred’s fastest fifty off 15 balls as London Spirit pulverised a 144 target against the Northern Superchargers at Headingley, maintaining their 100 percent record with a fourth win.The Spirit’s seven-wicket success with 18 balls remaining means they already have one foot in the knockout stages at the halfway mark in their campaign after leg-spinner Mason Crane impressed with 2 for 23 to restrict the Superchargers to 143 for 5.Spin and pace off did the trick for the Spirit on a used surface – a break from the Headingley norm in white-ball cricket – before Rossington looked like he was batting on a different pitch. He hit nine of his first 15 balls to or over the boundary, finishing with 66 off 25.Home captain Faf du Plessis top-scored with 56 off 35 after electing to bat, and the Superchargers have now lost their last three games following an opening-round win. They only scored 23 off their 25-ball powerplay, losing Adam Lyth, who miscued Glenn Maxwell’s off-spin to mid-on.Superb Australian Maxwell conceded just six runs off 15 balls, 10 of which were bowled straight through to start proceedings.Aside from Adam Hose’s late 30 off 14, du Plessis was the only Supercharger who looked comfortable as he hit two sixes over long-on and deep midwicket.A lack of timing and miscues were prominent against a varied attack oozing confidence.Crane had David Willey stumped for 16 and Harry Brook caught at long-off for 12. When the latter fell, the Superchargers were 60 for 3 after 53.Glenn Maxwell enjoyed an excellent day with bat and ball•ECB/Getty Images

But the home crowd’s mood was lifted in the final 20 balls as the Spirit were unable to inflict a Hose pipe ban. After former Supercharger and current Yorkshire all-rounder Jordan Thompson – otherwise expensive – bowled du Plessis with a slower ball full toss, Hose crashed his first three balls for two fours and six over long-leg.But it was nothing compared to Rossington’s early assault. Off the bowling of Willey and Roelof van ver Merwe inside the first 10 balls of the chase, he crashed three fours and three sixes in seven balls, taking the score to 34 without loss. His three sixes came in as many balls off van der Merwe’s left-arm spin, clobbered over long-on and straight. And he was far from done. Overseas duo Wahab Riaz and Dwayne Bravo were both hoisted over square-leg and midwicket, while Craig Miles was dragged over long-on to secure his fifty with a fifth six, eclipsing Supercharger Adam Lyth’s 17-ball effort against Oval Invincibles last week.Adil Rashid bowled Daniel Bell-Drummond (15) to make it 69 for 1 after 28 balls for London Spirit. But even at that early stage in the chase, the points had all but been secured. When Rossington picked out deep midwicket off van der Merwe, trying to hit his eighth six, Spirit were 113 for 2 after 52.Maxwell capped off an excellent personal day with a typically high-octane unbeaten 43 off 25.

Pant's battle with Shami, Siraj and Umesh lights up Indians' warm-up game

Playing for Leicestershire, the India wicketkeeper scored a rollicking 76 off 87 balls

Sidharth Monga24-Jun-2022

Rishabh Pant took on all comers at Grace Road•Associated Press

From the moment he came out wearing the big gloves for Leicestershire, Rishabh Pant against India’s Test seam bowlers was a juicy prospect. Pant has his own method of playing seam bowlers. He can often look clueless, but he can also be dismissive and ruthless as is evident in his centuries in England and Australia, and the two scarcely believable innings in Sydney and Brisbane at the start of 2021. How was he going to tackle his own bowlers, who are among the best seam-bowling units going around? The Leicestershire batting, not all of them first-choice players, made sure Pant was out there answering the question as early as the 14th over, at 44 for 3, one of the wickets being Cheteshwar Pujara, playing on trying to cut Mohammed Shami. And he lit up a gloomy afternoon at Grace Road as the Indians continued a second fruitful day of practice. Pant came out the better in his exchange with Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur (Jasprit Bumrah played for Leicestershire), playing shots both orthodox and innovative, to score 76 off 87 balls to cancel out the Indians’ first-innings score of 246, declared overnight. With two days and an hour still to go, there was enough time for a grandstand one-innings shootout. We might still get it come the fourth day, but the immediate pursuit was quality practice more than the competitiveness: Rohit Sharma didn’t open the innings, sending in KS Bharat instead after his first-innings half-century, nor did Jasprit Bumrah bowl. As a result, Navdeep Saini got a chance to bowl, removing Shubman Gill through a second loose, in-between shot of the match. The highlight of the day remained Pant, who took on all of the seamers, scoring 26 off 30 balls from Shami, 20 off 23 against Siraj and 13 off 12 when facing Umesh. He went from 45 off 72 to 70 off 82, unleashing extra-cover drives, paddle sweeps off the quicks, and nonchalant short-arm jabs. He brought up his fifty with an audacious sweep off Umesh. In the end, though, Pant fell to what is his natural strength: spin, that too left-arm. He tried to slog-sweep Ravindra Jadeja, but the lack of turn took the outer edge for a high catch at long-on. If there ever was any doubt around Jadeja getting a place in the first XI, he laid it to rest with three wickets in just eight overs.Bharat’s impressive batting continued into the second innings as he and Gill got off a flying start. The first real mistake from them came in the 11th over by which time they had reached 59. Gill looked imperious in his early stroke-play, but was caught on the crease, pushing away from the body, falling to the extra bounce for Saini. The Indians ended the day at 80 for 1, a lead of 82.

Alongside Amad: Amorim simply must unleash "world-class" Man Utd talent

Manchester United host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford this evening, looking to return to winning ways after boss Ruben Amorim suffered his first defeat as manager in midweek.

The Red Devils fell to a 2-0 loss against Arsenal at the Emirates, ending the 39-year-old’s three-game unbeaten run after taking over from Erik ten Hag.

However, he’s yet to lose a game on home soil, looking to make it back-to-back losses for Nuno Espírito Santo’s men in Manchester after their defeat to Manchester City on the same night.

A win this evening will take United above the visitors in the Premier League table, closing the gap on the top four spots – undoubtedly the aim for Amorim come the end of the season.

If his side are to return to winning ways, he must recall one player after dropping to the bench in North London a couple of days ago.

Why Amad needs to start against Forest

After the appointment of the former Portuguese international, it’s seen the side operate in the 3-4-2-1 system that saw him claim two league titles during his time at Sporting CP.

Such a transition has allowed numerous players to star in unfamiliar roles, with Amad Diallo just one of the beneficiaries in recent weeks.

The Ivorian originally arrived in Manchester as a winger, but he’s since dropped slightly further back to operate in a right wing-back role, taking his performance levels above anything he’d ever demonstrated in the North West.

In the three games since his switch, the 22-year-old has thrived, delivering three assists in just two league outings – including a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Marcus Rashford, who poked home for the first goal of the Amorim era against Ipswich.

However, despite his recent displays, he was named as a substitute against the Gunners, with Tyrell Malacia coming into the side – but it’s a switch that needs to be reversed once more tonight.

Most of the positive forward play in recent outings has come through the former Atalanta ace, with a recall needed alongside one other key first-team star.

The player who needs to be recalled alongside Amad

Academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo has taken huge strides over the last 12 months, from making his debut to even receiving an England call-up for Euro 2024 over the summer.

However, he’s yet to showcase his best performance levels under the new management team, being left on the bench in two of the three games he’s been available for.

The 19-year-old did start the clash against Everton last weekend but did receive his fifth booking of the season – subsequently receiving a one-match ban for the game at the Emirates on Wednesday.

His suspension saw Bruno Fernandes drop into a slightly deeper role alongside Manuel Ugarte, ultimately taking away the creativity of the Portuguese international, with the United skipper producing his best displays when he operates in a more advanced role, as seen against the Toffees.

Such a move leaves a perfectly sized hole in the middle of the park for Mainoo, allowing the “world-class” ace, as dubbed by journalist Ryan Adsett, to terrorise Forest at Old Trafford.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Indeed, Mainoo might fancy his chances up against the likes of Ryan Yates and Nicolas Dominguez, with the pair having struggled against City in midweek, after being dribbled past four times between them on the night.

It will be a tricky task against Nuno’s side, who have enjoyed a superb start to the campaign, but ultimately, Amorim’s men should have the quality to pull through once more.

If they are to claim all three points, Amad and Mainoo are two players who simply have to start, potentially picking up where they left off in the previous home victory.

Gareth Southgate stepped down from the most pressurised of roles after overseeing runs to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final. He has been knighted on the back of those achievements, despite failing to land a first trophy with the men’s team since 1966.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Reins have been passed to former Chelsea and Bayern Munich coach Tuchel, with a winning start made to his tenure in 2026 World Cup qualifying clashes with Albania and Latvia. Questions are being asked of whether a new era for England will be any different to those that went before it, with there still plenty of room for improvement.

WHAT PAUL GASCOIGNE SAID

Three Lions legend Gascoigne says any success enjoyed from here will be down to the players, not those in the dugout, with the Euro 96 hero telling : “We’ve had so many foreign managers you know. But what English manager can we have? We’ve just had one, [Lee] Carsley and he didn’t want the job. And Eddie Howe could have had it, but he’s alright where he is. We’ll have to see. But it doesn’t make any difference what manager we have. My next door neighbour could be the England manager.

“It’s the players on the pitch who have got to perform. When I got picked by Bobby Robson, I wanted to play for him. He was giving me the chance to play for my country. So whoever plays for them has got to do their best, because it’s not easy being an England manager. Because once your time’s up, your time’s up and the fans will let you know, so good luck to them to be fair.”

Getty Images/GoalDID YOU KNOW?

Quizzed on whether he has any issue with the England manager being German, Gazza added: “Well, Germany, I don’t know, I mean I got beat on penalties there twice. That was funny, that penalty thing [in 1996], because I said to Gareth Southgate, ‘what happened to you? I scored my penalty and ended up in rehab. You missed yours, and you get the England manager’s job and 30 grand pizza advert.’

“But yeah, with the German manager, you’ve got to give him a chance. It was nice to have an England manager, but it’s not the manager who counts, it’s the players.”
