Gregory and Overton put MCC in command

Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton reprised the form that helped to carry Somerset to the brink of their maiden Championship title last summer, as they shared nine wickets between them to secure MCC a sizeable first-innings lead on the second day of their Champion County fixture against Middlesex in Abu Dhabi.By the close of play, however, Middlesex had themselves fought back with the ball, reducing MCC to 145 for 7 – an overall lead of 298 – with Harry Podmore leading the line with three wickets.Middlesex had resumed their first innings on 9 for 1 in reply to MCC’s 332 all out, but struggled to make headway against a Somerset-dominated attack, for whom the spinner Jack Leach made the first breakthrough, when Tom Helm was bowled for 15.It was Gregory, however, who did the bulk of the early damage to Middlesex’s prospects, adding three quick wickets to his overnight scalp of Sam Robson to reduce the champions to 68 for 5.Middlesex’s fortunes were boosted by Dawid Malan, who top-scored with 56, and John Simpson, who made 49 in a sixth-wicket stand of 98. But Malan was trapped lbw by Overton, who then had James Franklin caught behind two balls later for a duck.Simpson fell in a similar fashion ten runs later, as Gregory completed his five-wicket haul, and the tail came meekly, with Overton accounting for Podmore and Ravi Patel in consecutive deliveries. With a significant lead of 153 in the bank, MCC were able to take the early losses of Alex Lees and Tom Alsop in their stride, as Podmore trapped both men lbw in the same over, but when Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke were removed in quick succession by James Harris, the score was a dicey 49 for 4.Podmore added his third when Ben Cox fell for 13, but Adam Lyth’s 42 carried the lead past 250, before Gregory and Overton reprised their bowling partnership with some enterprising hitting to ensure MCC finished the day back in command.

Saker to stand-in for Lehmann during India ODIs

The decision to use a stand-in coach for the India ODI tour is a mirror of Australia’s plans in 2013, when Lehmann remained in Australia ahead of the home Ashes series

Daniel Brettig10-Mar-2017Australia’s assistant coach David Saker will stand in for Darren Lehmann on the ODI tour of India that takes place later this year, but admits the fact that he has not played international cricket will count against him in calculations to replace Lehmann after the head coach’s contract expires in 2019.Lehmann has previously indicated that the conclusion of his current deal, following the double of the World Cup and an Ashes tour both in England, is highly likely to be the end of his tenure as coach of the national team. Saker returned to Australia from England and coached Victoria to the Sheffield Shield in his first season before being named as Lehmann’s assistant last year. While not shying away from saying that he would be more than capable of being Australia’s head coach, Saker conceded that a first-class career as a swing bowler for Victoria that did not feature any international cricket would likely count against him in Cricket Australia’s calculations. The Western Australia coach Justin Langer and the Adelaide Strikers coach Jason Gillespie – both of whom stood in to mentor the Australian Twenty20 team last month alongside Ricky Ponting – are commonly considered the most likely successors to Lehmann.”It’s a huge honour to be even considered to be a coach of an Australian team and to be given the opportunity is fantastic. I’m going to look forward to it a lot,” Saker said. “My ambition is to coach Australia but I know not playing cricket for Australia makes it a little bit harder. But I think I’ve been involved in Test cricket, one day cricket and Twenty20 cricket a lot. I’ve seen a lot of cricket so I think I could do the job without a doubt.”Saker’s frank assessment of international cricket being a factor in his chances is not mere opinion. Lehmann and by extension CA have emphasised the importance of international playing experience in the coaching staff over the past four years, to the point that playing the game at the top level as a player is believed to be a factor in areas such as coach’s contract length and level of remuneration. The decision to use a stand-in coach for the India ODI tour is a mirror of Australia’s plans in 2013, when Lehmann remained at home ahead of the home Ashes series alongside several members of the Test team including David Warner, Michael Clarke and Steven Smith. The touring team were instead led by George Bailey as captain and Steve Rixon as coach, and gave a good account of themselves until an in-form Mitchell Johnson was sent home ahead of the series deciding final game.India went on to win the last match to take a high-scoring series, but the result was to be little remembered in the aftermath of Australia’s subsequent 5-0 sweep of England on home shores. Saker was then a part of England’s support staff – he will be hoping this time to aid the hosts in regaining the urn, both by his guidance in India and in the Ashes Tests that follow.

Arsenal Make Approach For £68m "Elite Talent"

Arsenal have reportedly made an approach to Sporting CP over a possible move for defender Ousmane Diomande.

What’s the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Gunners appear to be working hard behind the scenes to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer following an impressive 2022/23 Premier League season.

One of the club’s top targets is West Ham midfielder Declan Rice. Reports have suggested that the England international has already reached a verbal agreement when it comes to personal terms ahead of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

A fee still needs to be agreed on between the two clubs, with Jacob Steinberg suggesting that is close with a figure possibly surpassing £100m with add-ons included.

Rice could therefore become Arsenal’s all-time record signing should a move go through in that price range, however, it looks as if the club could still make further additions.

Sport Witness relayed a report from Portuguese newspaper Record regarding Arsenal and Diomande in the last 48 hours. They claimed that the Gunners and Juventus have both made contact over a potential transfer, however, it is deemed ‘impossible’, with Sporting informing Diomande’s representatives he is ‘locked’ in at Lisbon.

The report does add that the player has a €80m (£68m) release clause, though, something that will need to be activated following Sporting’s stance on a sale.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Who is Ousmane Diomande?

Diomande is just 19 years of age and only joined Sporting back in January from FC Midtjylland. Since then, the Ivorian has gone on to make 17 appearances in all competitions for his current employers, two of which actually came against Arsenal in the Europa League.

The centre-back played the entirety of the game at the Emirates Stadium as Sporting progressed on penalties and was actually the visitors’ second-best outfield player on the evening, as per SofaScore. He appears to be a star in the making, with talent scout Jacek Kulig saying:

“You rarely see a player with such high ball-playing and pure defender skills. There are some tactical improvements but I'm quite sure this kid will play for the best teams in the world. The signs of elite talent.”

However, paying £68m for a teenager alongside a possible £100m+ deal for Rice could be seen as too much by Arsenal officials this summer, but following a recent approach and a starring display in north London back in March, it looks as if it could be one to keep an eye on over the summer.

Tottenham: Spurs Eye "Intriguing" Move For World Cup Star

Tottenham Hotspur have an "intriguing" alternative goalkeeper option in Croatia number one Dominik Livakovic, according to reports.

Who could replace Lloris at Spurs?

Long-serving number one Hugo Lloris could well leave Spurs this summer, with reports suggesting as such and the player himself recently admitting to the press he wants a fresh challenge.

The 36-year-old, speaking to Nice-Matin, even proclaimed it is the end of an era and desires different things following over 10 years in north London.

"We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me," explained Lloris."It's the end of an era. I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible."But I don't forget that I still have a year of contract with Tottenham and that in football it is always difficult to predict what will happen. "What is essential at the moment is to recover well from my injury. I'm on vacation but I continue to talk and do my training. My goal is to be on top in July, then we'll see what the future holds for me."

As such, Tottenham have been keeping a watchful eye on key targets for the goalkeeping position, perhaps most notably Brentford's David Raya who is believed to be of serious interest. Everton keeper Jordan Pickford has also been mooted in the press.

However, according to Football Insider, there is an "intriguing" alternative option in Livakovic – who they reiterate "impressed" at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 28-year-old helped Croatia to the semi-finals, where they eventually secured a third-placed finish at the expense of Morroco.

Livakovic is entering the final 12 months of his deal with Zagreb and could well come very cheap, with his club apparently valuing him at aroind the £10 million mark.

He has also apparently been watched by Tottenham at club level as they take an interest.

Who is Dominik Livakovic?

Beyond his exploits at the World Cup, Livakovic has been a faithful servant for Zagreb, having worn the jersey for nearly a decade.

He has also attracted praise from some major figures in the game, like former Bayern Munich chief Oliver Kahn.

"The man who stopped Brazil will always be a hero to me," Kahn said during his time working at the Allianz Arena. (via 90min)."Livakovic is worthy of praise. Such a goalkeeper must play at a top club. I have no doubt that this will be the case in the new season, but at the same time, he is not within the scope of our interests."

Newcastle Scouts Watching £38k-p/w Transfer Target

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Newcastle United are among some top European clubs who have sent "sent scouts to follow" Moussa Diaby.

What's the latest NUFC transfer news?

With three games left to play in their Premier League campaign, the Magpies have put themselves in a brilliant position to secure top-four football but the job is not done yet.

Indeed, while Eddie Howe and co sit third in the division, Manchester United are breathing down their neck on the same amount of points (66), while Liverpool are just one point behind (although have played one more game).

If Newcastle can secure Champions League football next term, however, this will no doubt make them a much more attractive prospect for their primary transfer targets.

And judging from the latest update from Romano, it sounds as though they may need European football of the highest level as they potentially challenge PSG and Real Madrid for Bayer Leverkusen winger Diaby.

While speaking on his Here We Go Podcast, the Italian journalist explained (10:50): "So around Moussa Diaby there is a lot of interest.

"I would include Newcastle and PSG, for sure, because many clubs have sent scouts to follow this boy.

"At the moment, I'm not aware of anything advanced with Real Madrid."

Will Moussa Diaby join Newcastle?

It's not hard to see why the French winger – who's been hailed a "beast" by some in the media – is attracting so much attention. After all, he has 14 goals and 11 assists while playing for Leverkusen this season.

However, this £38k-p/w star likely won't come cheap. Indeed, while his wages aren't extortionate, his transfer fee might be as €100m (£88.5m) was quoted when there was interest in Diaby last January.

By the sounds of it, though, at the moment there is no leading candidate just yet in this particular transfer race – which is certainly promising news for the Magpies.

Bayer Leverkusen attacker Moussa Diaby.

Once the season comes to an end and Newcastle will know if they are in the Champions League, they will surely then make more of a concerted effort to push for Diaby if he is indeed viewed as a primary target.

But with the player having once played for PSG in the past, coming through the academy to make 34 senior appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, he may prefer a move back home instead of trying something new in the Premier League.

No doubt more will become clear in the coming months.

Sutherland stresses ICC big picture

Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has stressed the need to view proposed changes to the structure of international cricket in their entirety, after the BCCI expressed its opposition to the concept of two-tier Test cricket

Brydon Coverdale08-Aug-2016Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has stressed the need to view proposed changes to the structure of international cricket in their entirety, after the BCCI expressed its opposition to the concept of two-tier Test cricket.ICC chief executive David Richardson has advocated what he calls a “proper competition structure” for Test cricket, which could see a top division of the seven highest-ranked Test nations and a lower division including the sides ranked eight to ten, as well as new Test teams from the Associate nations. The concept was discussed at the ICC’s annual conference in Edinburgh in June, along with other potential changes to the structure of international cricket. However, the boards of both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh expressed their opposition to two-tier Test cricket, a stance that has now been backed by BCCI president Anurag Thakur.”In the two-tier system, they will lose out on a lot, including revenue and the opportunity to play against top teams,” Thakur said of lower-ranked Test sides. “We don’t want that to happen. We want to work in the best interests of world cricket and that is why our team plays against all the countries.”However, Sutherland said nothing under the new proposal would prevent top teams such as India playing against the lower-ranked sides in bilateral contests, and the overall raft of proposed changes would add greater context to international cricket.”I saw the headlines about that and I saw some comment that that was about India wanting to play against the other countries,” Sutherland told ESPNcricinfo. “Well, frankly there’s nothing that I’m aware of that stops India from playing against whoever they want to.”But creating some sort of structure around Test cricket is one small part of what’s a number of different components to a major review of the structure and format of international bilateral cricket, something that we believe is really important to ensure the sustainable future of international cricket.”Whether there are two divisions is one small component. There’s a whole lot of other things about what the financial model looks like, how teams that may be in the second division are protected and supported to ensure they’re given the best financial backing and other opportunities to bounce back from the second division.”But we’re only talking about Test cricket there. That’s one small component of the whole package or raft of things that includes T20 league, one-day league, and competition that adds context and structure to international cricket, and hopefully makes it more sustainable as a fan proposition, which is ultimately the most important thing.”Sutherland said it was too early to speculate about the future of proposed ICC changes, despite the apparent opposition expressed by Thakur last week.”We’ll have discussions about that in time,” Sutherland said. “It’s hard to gather exactly what people are thinking from headlines or limited media reports. Until you actually get with people and understand what they’re thinking it’s very difficult to rationalise and probably inappropriate to make too much comment.”

Rahul revels in proving his limited-overs credentials

After topping the runs charts in India’s three-ODI series in Zimbabwe, KL Rahul revealed his determination to prove his short-form credentials

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jun-2016

KL Rahul: ‘If someone says you can’t do something, prove them wrong’•Associated Press

KL Rahul made his mark in international cricket with a century at the SCG in January 2015, in just his second Test. The call-up had come in the middle of an outstanding Ranji Trophy season, which he finished with 838 runs at an average of 93.11. In the months leading up to his debut, his technique was lauded by coaches with regularity. Even Rahul Dravid praised him for being technically correct. He was seen as a promising Test prospect by everyone. But Rahul thinks that was not doing him justice. He always saw himself as good enough to succeed across formats, he said following his run-chart topping performance in the ODIs against Zimbabwe.”Coaches or your players in the dressing room can tell you you’re not good enough for certain formats, but I never thought they were right,” Rahul told . “I knew I was blessed with certain skills, so I stuck to that, I worked really hard on my game, and made sure my strengths became so strong that every time the ball was there, it went for a boundary.”Though these are early days in Rahul’s career, his game has come a long way since his first appearance in international cricket, and it would appear as if he has been driven, in part, by a firm resolve to prove his doubters wrong: “My advice would be not to listen to people. I mean, obviously, you have to listen to your coaches and your elders, but you don’t have to do what they say all the time. You know best about your game – go out there, be yourself and express yourself. If someone says you can’t do something, prove them wrong.”After becoming the first Indian to hit a century on ODI debut, he said he had worked hard to tune himself up for the shorter formats. “I worked on my weaknesses, made sure I got a lot fitter, because in one-dayers and T20s, you need to do a lot of running. Rotating the strike becomes very important, so you need to be quick and you need to be fit for that. Obviously, if you’re a good fielder, it adds an edge to you. You can save 10-15 runs on the field; definitely, that gives you an edge over another player. The captain always loves having good fielders in the team.”Having spent considerable time in the slips in the Zimbabwe series, Rahul, also a wicketkeeper, has had occasion to observe MS Dhoni from close quarters. He used the time to ask questions on captaincy and keeping, he said. “When he makes a few changes in the field and I don’t understand why he has done that, I go up to him and ask him why he made that change. He’d explain why, what was the thought process of moving the fielder somewhere or giving someone the ball over somebody else.”Also with keeping stuff, I just asked a few things today, because standing behind the stumps on wickets like this, the ball wobbles after it beats the batsman and that is really difficult for the wicketkeeper to collect. So I asked him if he does something differently.”He stands in different positions for different bowlers, and we have three extremely different bowlers. Dhawal [Kulkarni] is wicket to wicket and [has a] very nice action, Barinder [Sran] is left-arm seamer, so you stand somewhere else and Jasprit [Bumrah] has a very awkward action and it can be very difficult for the keeper sometimes. So just few things like that … asking him where he stands, if he’s thinking about different things or he just sticks to basics. Those are a few things I tried to ask him and tried to learn from him in these three games.”Rahul’s dominant displays at the top of the order played an important part in India’s convincing wins in Zimbabwe, but it was the bowlers who set up the victories by dismissing the opposition for small totals in all three games. “I think a lot of credit goes to the bowlers and the way they’ve come out there and executed their plans. We spoke about pitching the ball up because there was some movement in the wicket, and the wicket was assisting the bowlers. But to come out there and execute the plans in all three games was great to see. I thoroughly enjoyed fielding and catching and watching the bowlers bowl. Credit goes to the boys and the way we’ve all worked together.”

Everton Plot ‘Outstanding’ Transfer Swoop

Everton will be expected to strengthen their attacking threat this summer following a disappointing Premier League campaign and have seemingly now identified the man to take them to the next level.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

According to 90min, Everton are one of many European clubs keeping an eye on FC Cincinnati striker Brandon Vazquez.

As per the report, the Toffees are joined by several clubs in their interest in the player – with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach all keen on snapping up Vazquez's services next season.

Would Brandon Vazquez be a good signing for Everton?

There is no doubt that the biggest area of concern at Goodison Park is the attacking threat due to Richarlison's exit last summer, Anthony Gordon's departure in January and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's persistent injury issues.

No other team in the Premier League has scored fewer goals than Sean Dyche's side this season (23), which has heavily contributed to their plight in the top flight, currently fighting for survival in a tight relegation battle over their remaining nine games.

Indeed, the Everton hierarchy did bring in a new striker following Richarlison's move to Tottenham Hotspur, with Neal Maupay joining the Merseyside outfit on a three-year deal in August.

However, the £50k-per-week flop – who was notably dubbed "poor" by Alan Shearer – has scored just one goal this season over 22 appearances in all competitions and has already found himself out of favour in Dyche's starting line-ups due to his lack of impact in front of goal.

As a result, the signing of Vazquez could be a huge boost to the team next term if he can continue to score at the rate that he has in MLS.

The 24-year-old dynamo has scored 27 times and registered 14 assists over 93 appearances for Cincinnati with a goal contribution every 124 minutes so far – an output that could be highly valuable to Everton next season.

Vazquez was particularly influential in the 2022 season where he found the net on 19 occasions and delivered eight assists in 35 appearances to help his side reach their first-ever MLS Cup playoffs.

Evidently a player who is capable of scoring regularly, an added boon is that the Toffees target appears to create regular opportunities for others, with that potentially outlining him as the ideal Richarlison replacement moving forward.

Judging by those numbers, it's hardly a surprise that the talented goal machine earned high praise from the USMNT interim head coach Anthony Hudson back in January.

After impressively scoring on his debut for his national team, Hudson stated that it "was an outstanding header."

Further praise has been forthcoming from his head coach, Pat Noonan, who commented at the end of last month: "His rise has become because of his own work ethic and his willingness to get better and learn. He puts in a lot of work to not just score goals but to help the team with his hold-up play, with his decision-making, with his runs into the box, and that's what helped him to score a lot of goals.

"His movement in and around goal has improved so much in a year's time. I love working with the guy."

With that being said, if the powerbrokers at Goodison could strike up a good deal to sign Vazquez this summer, it could finally give Everton the prolific and goal-hungry striker they've desperately needed over the last two seasons.
