Marnus Labuschagne's mind wanders to facing Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami

With four Sheffield Shield matches over the next month, Labuschagne is looking forward to getting back in the groove

Daniel Brettig07-Oct-2020If Marnus Labuschagne’s conscious mind will be grappling with the likes of Peter Siddle, Riley Meredith and Jackson Bird in the opening Sheffield Shield round from Saturday in Adelaide, his deeper thoughts have already turned to how India’s pacemen will seek to end the golden run he has enjoyed in Test matches since last year’s Ashes series. While Labuschagne has played one Test against India, batting No. 3 at the SCG in January 2019, that match arrived before his blooming as an international batman after taking full advantage of the county cricket finishing school with Glamorgan later that year. Since then, Labuschagne has cracked 1249 runs in nine Tests at 83.26, with four centuries, to sit third on the ICC rankings. Those performances have not only seen Labuschagne elbow his way into Australia’s ODI team, meaning he travelled to England for the brief recent limited-overs tour, but also placed an outsized target on his back for bowlers across Australia and around the world. Shield jousting, with four matches to be played, will give Labuschagne the chance to get into the sort of groove he occupied before memorably entering the Ashes as a concussion substitute for Steven Smith at Lord’s and never looking back.ALSO READ: Mitchell Swepson: ‘I loved being thrown the ball to win the game for the team'”For me personally it’s about getting better and coming up with really trying to think about how they’re going to attack me, what they will do to try to get me out and how I will counter that. If I keep trying to do the same thing, I think fundamentally the same thing is going to work, but you want to make sure there’s going to be new ideas and new plans,” Labuschagne said. “If that’s the short ball or if that’s having a few more catchers on the leg side or hanging it wider on the off side, whatever their plans are going to be.”I think it’s important as a cricketer that you’re one step ahead and you’re trying to understand what they’re going to do and how they’re going to attack you. I love the contest – I want to score runs and they want to get me out. [Shield sides] are going to come up with plans, they’ve played against me for the last four years and they understand how I play, so they’re going to come prepared and I think that’s the exciting part, you have to be one step ahead and be really clear on how you want to play the game.”A hyperactive character at the best of times, Labuschagne’s hotel room confinement in England and then Adelaide upon the squad’s return has seen him wake up early to watch plenty of IPL fixtures, as he began to think about the prospect of dealing with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, to name two.Marnus Labuschagne pulls behind square•Getty Images”I think you’re subconsciously thinking about it, thinking about how their bowlers bowl, especially now you’re locked in and you watch a bit of the IPL in the morning and you look at how their bowlers are bowling,” Labuschagne said. “It kind of makes you think about what they’ll do, how Bumrah will bowl, what Shami will do, what those guys will do. Maybe it’s more of a subconscious thing, so you’re not necessarily thinking about it directly, but it’s turning over in the background, what you might do, what plans they might have for you. There had been concerns that the Shield would be drastically cut back or even shelved amid the difficulties created by Covid-19, but Cricket Australia’s staging of the early rounds of the season in Adelaide, at venues including Glenelg Oval and Karen Rolton Oval, will be highly valuable for the likes of Labuschagne and also the Test captain Tim Paine, who will lead Tasmania against the Bulls from Saturday. It’s a contrast to the lead-up for players taking part in the IPL, who will likely get just one red-ball game in Australia before the Tests begin.”I’m a big fan of the four games in a row,” Labuschagne said. “I think that’s really helpful for that momentum and rhythm with your batting. You actually get to play game time continuously. That really helps and aids that development and that ability to keep scoring runs. Hopefully that can propel you into a really good Test summer. You’ve just got to take it a game at a time. You can’t get too distracted and too ahead of yourself and trying to build momentum.”I definitely think it’s slightly harder [coming back from the IPL] but we’re so used to it nowadays being able to change format to format. It might take them a couple of training sessions to get the feel of it, but I think it will turn over pretty quick and guys will get into the rhythm of things very quickly. That’s the nature of games these days. The schedule is so cramped, there’s so much cricket on you have to be able to shift from white ball to red ball and red ball to white ball simultaneously.”As for tackling the fishbowl existence of biosecure hubs at home and away, Labuschagne admitted some days were easier than others. “Any day I get out and get to go train is a good day. Hit balls, catch some balls in slips or have a bowl, I think they’re the really enjoyable days for me,” he said. “I think some of the tougher days are when we weren’t allowed out for the whole day, they were tough, you’re in your room and doing different things but you can’t get out and about and move around.”There was no fresh air or outside so you almost got a bit claustrophobic sometimes. But all in all we were very lucky with our quarantine in Adelaide, they were very good to us, and we were lucky enough to keep training and doing gym and running and those sorts of things. I’ve tried to listen to a fair few podcasts. I’ve been listening to a few of Joe Rogan’s podcasts, must try to keep yourself occupied to be able to learn. That’s what I tried to do in isolation and a bit of gym. I’ve got a heap of gym equipment that I travelled with so I’m doing a bit of gym in my room and things like that.”

Joe Root hints at return for Jofra Archer in third Test

Archer’s job to ‘get the ball zipping around at 90-plus mph’ if selected, England captain says

Alan Gardner20-Aug-2020Joe Root, England’s captain, has hinted at a return for Jofra Archer in the third Test against Pakistan, starting on Friday.Archer was rested for the second match, also in Southampton, but was described by Root as being full of energy and “keen to show what he can do” as England look to finish on a winning note in what is likely to be their final Test of 2020.Having started the rearranged international summer against West Indies in Southampton by playing both Archer and Mark Wood, their two quickest bowlers, in the same Test XI for the first time, England did not pick either last week, with James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran making up the four-man pace attack.Anderson and Broad shared seven wickets in Pakistan’s only innings in a rain-wrecked second Test, and seem likely to retain their places; Curran, who claimed 1 for 44 after coming in for Archer as a more all-round option, is perhaps most vulnerable, although England could leave out the spinner, Dom Bess, as they did in Johannesburg earlier in the year.”I think there is a fair chance you’ll see at least one of them [Archer or Wood],” Root said. “Everything is on the table, we’ve got all options there for us in the squad whichever way we think suits the pitch best. We want to go in with the best balanced attack that we feel will be able to take 20 wickets on that surface.”Amid discussions about Archer’s speeds this summer, and his description of the pitch at Emirates Old Trafford for the first Pakistan Test as not a surface “to bend your back on”, Root suggested that his role in the side had been made clear in discussions with Chris Silverwood, England’s head coach. With Anderson and Broad still favoured to open the bowling in home conditions, it would be Archer’s job to come on and “get the ball zipping around at 90-plus mph”, Root said.”In these conditions, you pick those two bowlers to take the new ball. They’ve done it, they are so experienced, they set the tone extremely well and they are the best to exploit those conditions first up. The exciting thing is that you’ve then got Jofra to come in and hopefully get the ball zipping around at 90-plus mph.”It has been made very clear what his role is to play this week, ‘Spoons’ said as much when he spoke yesterday, and that gives him real clarity going into the game. I think he’s really keen to show what he can do. He’s coming off the back of a rest and he’s full of energy, so hopefully we’ll see him at his best this week.”Root also confirmed that Wood was available to play after sustaining a bruised foot while training in Manchester. With Ben Stokes, and all he brings to the team, still missing for personal reasons, Root called on his players to “turn up and throw everything at Pakistan and leave the Test summer with a brilliant performance under our belt”.Victory would see Root draw level in second with Andrew Strauss and his predecessor, Alastair Cook, on 24 wins as Test captain, two behind Michael Vaughan’s record.”It would be a great way to finish this summer, but it is not about me as captain,” he said. “To be successful as a captain you need some fantastic players and we’ve got loads of talent within this group. We’re on an upward curve as a side and long may that continue. With the right attitude and work ethic that we’ve had, especially over the last year or so, then I believe the sky’s the limit.”Root also confirmed that he is hoping to be involved in England’s white-ball series against Australia next month. Although a regular in the ODI side, Root has not played a T20I since the start of the 2019 home summer and had slipped down the pecking order ahead of back-to-back T20 World Cups. The postponement of the first of those tournaments, originally scheduled to be held in Australia in October and November, and the ongoing effect of the coronavirus pandemic means England’s winter itinerary remains uncertain – but Root indicated his desire to return to the T20 format, either with England or his county, Yorkshire.”Yes I’m available and I’m looking forward to trying to play as much cricket as I can this summer. We don’t know when we will play again once this summer finishes so whether it is for Yorkshire or for England I’ll be keen to play and contribute as much as I can to whichever team I’m involved in. Hopefully I’ll be a part of an October Finals Day with Yorkshire if we get there.”We have to wait and see what international cricket materialises over the winter. There is nothing firmly fixed in the schedule, but it could quickly become a busy winter. It could be an interesting challenge so everyone has to make sure they look after themselves as best as they can to be ready for whatever games come at us.”

Tottenham now ready to make £34 million offer to sign Unai Emery target

Tottenham Hotspur are now ready to bid £34 million for a transfer target of Aston Villa and Unai Emery, with Ange Postecoglou plotting real change at N17.

Postecoglou hints at Spurs summer overhaul

The Australian has publicly stated that Spurs are in need of a real overhaul when the window opens for business on June 14, and even suggested that a number of players could make way.

Bayern Munich eye third Spurs star after Kane and Dier as Ange seeks replacement

The Lilywhites boss is already on the look out of his successor.

ByEmilio Galantini May 21, 2024

Tottenham ended the 2023/2024 Premier League season on more of a whimper than a bang, missing out on fourth to Villa with the north Londoners instead having to make do with Europa League football – despite an absolutely electric start to the campaign.

Sheffield United 0-3 Tottenham

Tottenham 0-2 Man City

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

The Lilywhites, after Postecoglou recorded the best-ever start made by a new manager in the division's history, tailed off towards the latter stages. This summer will be crucial in determining whether Tottenham can go the extra mile under Postecoglou, with the 58-year-old saying his side need to undergo "drastic" change.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's transfer window.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about.

"It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey. It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone."

Among the many positions which Spurs are looking to strengthen, one of them is believed to be in defence. Technical director Johan Lange and unofficial advisor Fabio Paratici could look to Italy for reinforcements, with Serie A proving a very fruitful pool of talent for them in recent years.

Tottenham are targeting Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori after an impressive season as one option, with Torino star Alessandro Buongiorno also attracting Spurs interest in the last few weeks.

Tottenham ready to bid £34 million for Andrea Cambiaso

Now, as per Tutto Juve, another Italian is turning their heads. Indeed, it is believed Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso is that man, with Spurs in the market for alternatives to star wing-backs Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie. Tottenham are apparently ready to bid £34 million for Cambiaso, but they're not alone, as Emery's Villa are plotting the same thing.

Andrea Cambiaso in action for Juventus.

The 24-year-old finished 23/24 as a mainstay under former boss Massimilano Allegri, making 34 Italian top flight appearances and playing a starring role in the first team.

“I haven’t yet understood whether he is right or left-footed," said AC Milan legend Mauro Tassotti on Cambiaso.

"In this sense, he is similar to Paolo Maldini who however was much more powerful from a physical standpoint, had incredible charisma and was also very strong defensively, so much so that he ended his career as a centre-back. Cambiaso is humble and serious."

Farke must finally drop "struggling" 4/10 Leeds man for the play-offs

Leeds United were beaten 2-1 by promotion rivals Southampton at Elland Road on the final day of the 2023/24 Championship season last Saturday.

Their place in the play-offs was confirmed, as Ipswich Town won their match to finish second in the division, and they will now face off against Norwich City in two legs for a place at Wembley in the final.

Daniel Farke will face off against his former club, where he won two promotions to the Premier League, and the first leg will be at Carrow Road at noon on Sunday.

The Whites will want to ensure that they take the tie to Elland Road with something to play for, whether that is a draw or a win, and that makes the first leg crucial to their success.

Therefore, the German head coach needs to ensure that his team selection is spot on and does not let him down in Norfolk, which is why Ilia Gruev should finally be ruthlessly ditched from the starting XI as time is now up for him.

Ilia Gruev's last two performances for Southampton

The Bulgaria international was selected to start in midfield against Russell Martin's side on Saturday but failed to justify his continued selection with another underwhelming display.

LeedsLive's Beren Cross awarded Gruev a player rating of 4/10 for his display, writing that he looked yards off the pace and was rusty against the Saints.

The former Werder Bremen star did complete 98% of his attempted passes (50/51) on Saturday but only created one chance, and zero 'big chances', which suggests that there was not much quality or progression in his ball-playing.

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

He was also, as the aforementioned journalist claimed, off the pace from a defensive perspective as the lightweight lost three of his four duels during the game, which shows that the opposition dominated him from a physical perspective.

The Athletic's Phil Hay posted on X during the match that Gruev, and Glen Kamara, was "struggling" to get in position to cut out Saints attacks, and that is reflected in his 25% duel success rate.

In the 4-0 loss to QPR in the previous match, LeedsLive reporter Cross handed the midfielder a dreadful match rating of just 2/10, writing that he had 'zero presence' in front of the back four to provide an effective screen in the middle of the park.

Much like the clash with Southampton, Gruev's work out of possession left a lot to be desired as he lost all six of his ground duels on the night, and failed to close down his man quickly enough for the first two QPR goals.

He has not been a substitute in the Championship since New Year's Day against Birmingham and Farke must finally drop him down to the bench due to his poor form in recent matches ahead of this big play-off clash with Norwich.

Ilia Gruev's form in the Championship this season

His recent underperformance in the middle of the park is a big shame as the former Bundesliga ace had been fantastic for large parts of the campaign prior to these recent games during the run-in.

Signed from Werder Bremen on a permanent deal last summer, Gruev had to bide his time for starts as he made nine appearances off the bench during the first half of the season.

In 20 starts, and 29 appearances in total, the Bulgarian maestro has displayed his quality in and out of possession, with his composed play on the ball and his defensive strength off of it.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old gem has won the majority of his battles on the ground and in the air throughout the season.

He currently ranks within the top 3% of Championship midfielders for pass accuracy (90.0%) and the top 47% for progressive passes per 90 (4.36), which shows that the talented gem has been extremely reliable on the ball and progressive with his passes.

Gruev also ranks within the top 20% of his positional peers or higher for tackles per 90 (2.38) and interceptions per 90 (1.37) respectively, which speaks to his defensive awareness and willingness to get stuck in.

However, the left-footed whiz has lost nine of his ten ground duels and only made three combined tackles and interceptions over the last two games, against Southampton and QPR, which shows that he is completely out of form and why the time should be up for him in the XI.

Who Leeds should replace Ilia Gruev with

Dropping Gruev to the bench would free up a space in midfield next to Kamara for another player to step up in the play-off clash with Norwich on Sunday.

Farke could turn to the youthful enthusiasm of Archie Gray in the middle of the park, after the Championship Young Player of the Season was a substitute against Southampton.

Archie Gray

His last start came against QPR in the 4-0 defeat at Loftus Road but the teenage sensation was one of the better performers on the night for Leeds, winning 100% of his ground duels (4/4) and making five combined tackles and interceptions to go along with a 90% pass success rate.

Norwich's Gabriel Sara has racked up 13 goals and 12 assists from midfield for the Canaries so far this season and Gray's defensive strength could be useful against the Brazilian maestro, whereas Gruev's recent form suggests that he would be caught out in duels against the talented star.

As you can see in the table above, the England U21 international has been consistent throughout the season in his duels, winning the majority of his battles across 40 starts.

Therefore, Gray should be unleashed ahead of the underperforming Gruev in midfield next to Kamara against the Yellows on Sunday, to give Farke's side the best chance of picking up a positive result to take back to Yorkshire for the second leg.

Everton could sign a "monster" Calvert-Lewin upgrade

Despite scoring five goals in the last three games, Everton have struggled for goals throughout the majority of the campaign.

Sean Dyche's side have only found the net on 37 occasions this season, with only already relegated Sheffield United managing to score fewer throughout 2023/24.

The stat is hardly a surprise given the Toffees' top scorer this season only has six goals – with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure both reaching the tallies despite their injury problems and respective lack of form.

The striker has often found himself nursing injuries this campaign, whilst Doucoure has failed to find himself on the scoresheet in any outing during 2024.

Dyche's side were strongly linked with a striker during the January transfer window, but failed to agree a deal due to the club's financial situation at the time.

However, the goalposts have shifted in recent months, with the Toffees needing to reignite interest in the forward ahead of the summer.

Everton's interest in Boulaye Dia

According to Corriere Dello Sport via TEAMtalk, Everton could be offered the opportunity to sign striker Boulaye Dia this summer for a cut-price after Salernitana's relegation from Serie A this season.

The Italian side may need to overhaul their squad if they are to secure an immediate return to the top flight next season, but they may have to do it without the Senegalese forward.

He was set for a move to Wolves during January, but Salernitana blocked the move, with TEAMtalk claiming the striker' has "completely fallen out" with the club and a move is expected this summer.

Dia could be available for just €20m (£17m), a price that should see the Toffees reignite their interest in the 27-year-old, if they raise funds before the PSR deadline on June 30th.

How Dia compares to Calvert-Lewin

Calvert-Lewin has only managed to score eight goals over the last two campaigns in the Premier League, a tally that is 12 fewer than Dia who has been excellent in front of goal despite the club's poor form in Serie A.

However, when comparing the pair's stats from the current season, Dia has demonstrated all-round qualities that would certainly bolster the Toffees' forward line.

Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia.

He's averaged 1.1 successful take-ons per game, compared to Calvert-Lewin's tally of just 0.5 – to be expected given his target man role under Dyche in recent months.

Everton should look to move away from their long ball system, with Salernitana's forward the perfect option to allow the club to implement a possession-based style.

The "monster" striker, as dubbed by Norweigan journalist Jonas Adnan Giæver, has a pass completion rate of 84% this season, a tally that blows the Englishman out of the water, as he's only managed to complete 55% of the passes he's attempted during 2023/24.

Dia has also managed more progressive passes, with his average of 1.7 per game, 0.3 more than Calvert-Lewin who is mainly used for his aerial presence, not his ball-playing skills.

All things considered, the club must prioritise a move for the Salernitana forward to help solve their goalscoring issues. He's demonstrated a knack for scoring key goals for a club looking to fight relegation – with his valuable finishes allowing the club to push further clear of the drop next season.

However, the potential transfer would also allow Dyche's side to move away from the back against the wall style of hounding out opposition before countering, with Dia's ability with the ball at his feet the catalyst for the change.

USWNT's 'Triple Espresso' of Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman & Sophia Smith spearheads GOAL's Women's Olympic Team of the Tournament

There are four members of Emma Hayes' triumphant team in GOAL's Best XI, while one of Brazil's silver medalists also squeezes into the attack

The United States women's national team might have endured a worst-ever Women's World Cup performance last summer, lost a ton of experienced players in the past 12 months and only been officially taken over by head coach Emma Hayes just nine weeks before the Olympics kicked-off, but it still stood on top of that podium on Saturday with a record-extending fifth gold medal.

Unsurprisingly then, the U.S. is well-represented in GOAL's Team of the Tournament, particularly by its attack, which thrived at Paris 2024. But there is also plenty of recognition for Brazil, which reached a major international final for the first time in 16 years, as well as others who shone in France, whether that resulted in a medal or not.

So, what does GOAL's Best XI look like? Here's who made the cut…

  • Getty Images

    GK: Lorena (Brazil)

While an honorable mention must be given to Ann-Katrin Berger here, who saved a last-minute penalty in the bronze medal match to ensure victory for Germany after being the hero in the quarter-final shootout against Canada, it's Brazil No.1 Lorena that gets the nod in this XI.

That's because she too came up with penalty heroics in the last eight, denying Sakina Karchaoui from 12 yards as the Selecao went on to beat France 1-0, before producing perhaps the best goalkeeping performance of the tournament in the semi-finals to help her nation unexpectedly reach the gold medal match.

Though the 27-year-old was among the Brazil players who drew criticism for time-wasting, no one could deny that she was outstanding in her shot-stopping in the last four, making eight saves as the South Americans went 3-0 up and, after some late and desperate pressure from Spain, eventually won 4-2. Lorean was a huge reason why her nation emerged from this tournament on the podium.

    RB: Giulia Gwinn (Germany)

It was fitting that Giulia Gwinn netted the goal that secured the bronze medal for Germany given how much of a key role the fullback played at both ends of the pitch for her team.

The Bayern Munich star netted twice in the tournament, along with a successful spot-kick in the shootout victory over Canada in the quarter-finals, and she was again nerveless from 12 yards to beat Spain on Friday in a result that went some way to papering over the devastating group-stage exit Germany suffered at the World Cup 12 months ago.

  • Getty

    CB: Naomi Girma (United States)

It's difficult to know what else to say about Naomi Girma. Those who have watched the 24-year-old regularly in her first few years in the NWSL have known about her quality for a while and, over the past few weeks, she has now ensured that the whole world understands just why Emma Hayes, head coach of the United States women's national team, described her as "the best defender I've ever seen".

No one completed more passes at the Olympics than Girma, her total some 120 ahead of anyone else, and she also managed to create four chances from those, despite playing at centerback. That's not to underrate her defensive work, though. While the statistics don't always show her impact off the ball, given her strong positioning prevents the need for desperate actions, Girma was among the USWNT's best players for winning possession back.

    CB: Tarciane (Brazil)

One of the best sights throughout Brazil's run to the gold medal match were the regular celebrations from Tarciane when she was simply doing her defensive work. Ranked 14th on GOAL's NXGN list back in 2022, the 21-year-old has long been touted as an exciting prospect for the future, and this year has seen her take huge steps towards realizing that potential. After moving to one of the game's best leagues in April when she joined the Houston Dash in the NWSL, Tarciane backed that up with a starring role in Brazil's silver medal-winning tournament.

Head coach Arthur Elias was not shy in rotating his team throughout the Olympics, yet Tarciane remained a fixture, starting five of Brazil's six matches. In those, she was a colossus, with her performance against Spain in the semi-final a particular highlight.

West Brom struck gold with an icon who’d be worth £12m in 2024 money

West Bromwich Albion go into this coming Good Friday's Championship clash brimming with confidence, having seen off Bristol City and Huddersfield Town with relative ease 2-0 and 4-1 before the international break kicked in.

Carlos Corberan's men look secure in their playoff spot in the division subsequently, sitting pretty in fifth spot with a sizeable eight-point gap opening up between the Baggies and their nearest playoff rival in Hull City in seventh, as a result of West Brom's recent positive form.

Alex Palmer has been a key cog in the Baggies machine this season in between the sticks to help his team dream big about promotion aspirations, keeping 16 clean sheets with the last of those coming in the rather routine Robins victory.

Yet, there's a hero from West Brom yesteryear who's idolised even more than Palmer when recollecting about dependable goalkeepers, having cost the West Midlands outfit just £4.5m back in 2012.

West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Ben Foster's transfer to West Brom

Ben Foster would leave Manchester United behind for pastures new initially at Birmingham City, never looking back after walking out of Sir Alex Ferguson's Theatre of Dreams.

It's not as if the revered manager didn't utilise Foster during his Red Devils days, amassing 23 appearances for the Man United first team over two seasons before moving on for more regular minutes first with the Blues and then further down the line with the Baggies.

Wrexham'sBenFoster

After one season at St. Andrew's, Foster would pack his bags for nearby West Brom with the ex-Man United shot-stopper going down as an icon over time in his new surroundings.

That £4.5m fee forked out by the current Championship club – after his short stint at the Blues – would end up looking like an absolute bargain, with Foster becoming a celebrated servant for the Baggies who was a reliable goalkeeper over many years when the club were a solid Premier League side.

What Ben Foster would be worth in 2024 money

The 6 foot 4 goalkeeper would go on to make 223 appearances for West Brom over seven impactful seasons, becoming very much a part of the furniture at the West Midlands club by the time of his exit.

Foster would end up keeping 57 clean sheets for the Baggies over these games, with his best personal season coming during the 2014-15 campaign where he would register 12 shut-outs from just 28 contests played.

That season would coincide with West Brom finishing 13th in the division with the likes of one-time hotshot Saido Berahino firing in 20 goals, Foster's team never really anxious about their top-flight status and sinking down to where Corberan now manages his Baggies troops in the second tier.

Foster would eventually endear himself to a new set of supporters in Watford, where he managed to break into the 200 game threshold also in Hertfordshire before a notable move to moneybags Wrexham AFC came to fruition, but West Brom fans will still view the eight-time England international as a Baggies icon first and foremost.

When looking at TotallyFootball's Transfer Index, which takes into account modern-day inflation involving past transfer deals, the £4.5m move is made to look even more of a masterstroke from those at the Hawthorns with his value – if that move took place today – coming in at £12m.

How Ben Foster's value compares to the West Brom squad

Using the Transfer Index, Foster would now be worth three times more than the Baggies most valuable asset currently in Jed Wallace when first joining the club – the ex-Millwall man coming in as being worth €4.1M (£3.5m) according to Football Transfers.

That's even with Wallace being as key as Palmer has been in patches for the promotion chasers this campaign so far, with the ageing midfielder helping himself to nine goals and assists across 35 appearances in all competitions.

Scanning the table above, Foster would be way out in front as the most valuable player compared to the likes of Okay Yokuslu and Brandon Thomas-Asante who are all aiming as a collective to return back to the level the goalkeeper succeeded at with West Brom.

After Watford, Foster's career would end with a whimper rather than a notable rebirth with the ex-Baggies man hanging up his boots at the Red Dragons after leaking 13 goals in just four games playing in the lower depths of League Two.

Palmer will strive to be remembered in the same vain as Foster with the Baggies gunning for promotion up to the top-flight, the current West Brom number one of the first names on his manager's teamsheet by being an everpresent in every XI fielded in the league to date.

Ben Foster of Wrexham

Now at 40 years of age, Foster is becoming known more as an internet personality than an excellent shot-stopper. But, to those with connections to the West Midlands club, the 6 foot 4 goalkeeper is very much still known for being a West Brom legend.

Nottingham Forest could axe 6ft3 star who’s earning more than Murillo

Nottingham Forest have had a tough time in recent seasons trying to replace a club legend who left the City Ground after promotion back in 2022.

Brice Samba played a pivotal role in helping Nottingham Forest end their 23-year Premier League exile, with his most impressive performance in a Forest shirt coming in his penultimate game for the club during the play-off semi-final victory over Sheffield United.

Samba made three crucial saves during normal and extra time, before making himself a hero during the penalty shootout. He saved spot kicks from Oliver Norwood, Conor Hourihane and now Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White, sending the club to Wembley and subsequently winning promotion.

However, after the play-off final, Samba decided he wanted to return to France, with the 'keeper departing and joining Ligue 1 side Lens for £4m – an absolute bargain for the French side.

The club made two loan signings for the goalkeeper position for the Premier League campaign, with Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas arriving on loan but not staying permanently.

Nottingham Forest will rue losing one GK who's a bigger talent than Samba

Nottingham Forest will regret not signing this goalkeeper.

This left them short in the goalkeeping department, with the club dipping back into the market last summer.

Matt Turner's record at Nottingham Forest

The Reds decided to buy goalkeeper Matt Turner during the summer from fellow Premier League side Arsenal for a deal rising to £10m with add-ons.

Turner, a USA international, has made 21 appearances for the club since his arrival, conceding 31 times with multiple errors coming from the 'keeper himself.

His mistake against Tottenham for Dejan Kulusevski's goal is just one of a number of errors he's made, with the former Arsenal man struggling to nail down the Forest starting position.

That was one of three mistakes leading to a goal that the USMNT star has made in 2023/24, a figure that puts him close to the top of the tree in the top flight.

His errors saw the club buy goalkeeper Matz Sels on deadline day in January, with Turner back down to the number two role – just as he was during his time at the Emirates.

On top of his £10m transfer fee, the club also paid for Turner's weekly wages. The 29-year-old signed a four-year deal last summer, with the American being handed a weekly wage of £40k – a figure higher than impressive teammates Murillo and Anthony Elanga.

Should the former Arsenal 'keeper see out his whole contract at the City Ground, the club will have paid him a staggering £8.3m in wages – a ridiculous amount for a goalkeeper who has been poor since his arrival.

The deal for Turner at the time certainly raised eyebrows, with the Reds spending a decent chunk of money on a player who had never previously been a consistent number one in England's top flight.

Overall, the deal for the USA number one has been a failure, with the 'keeper already dropping down the pecking order just seven months after he arrived on Trentside.

The club should be looking to cut their losses on Turner this summer, selling the former Arsenal man and reevaluating the goalkeeping situation throughout the transfer window.

A test for Sri Lanka's next gen as Pakistan look to re-establish their T20I credentials

With their batting firepower bolstered, the hosts will hope to reimpose themselves in the format against a depleted Sri Lanka

Big PictureSri Lanka did not embarrass themselves in the two ODIs, but they did not come close to winning a match either. On the surface, their prospects in the T20I series seem even bleaker. Pakistan are the top-ranked T20I side in the world, having won 11 of their past 13 series in the format. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are ranked eighth, and will even have to play the preliminary round of next year’s T20 World Cup in order to qualify for the tournament. They won the T20 World Cup as recently as 2014, but their form in the shortest format nosedived shortly after. They have lost five of their last six series.Regular captain Lasith Malinga took four wickets in four balls in Sri Lanka’s most-recent T20I, but Malinga, along with many other first-choice T20I players are not here. Instead, the team is led by Dasun Shanaka, and the 16-man squad features only two players over the age of 30 – Nuwan Pradeep and Isuru Udana. As was the case in the ODIs, this series is a test for Sri Lanka’s next generation. Can the likes of 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Minod Bhanuka and 22-year-old allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga make the transition to international cricket? They showed glimpses of quality in the ODIs, but need to make waves in the T20Is as well, to really capture the selectors’ attention.Although over the past two years Pakistan have a good T20I record, their 2019 numbers are not quite so impressive, having lost three of the last four matches they’ve played. With their batting firepower bolstered by the likes of Umar Akmal and their verstility improved by Faheem Ashraf, they will hope to reimpose themselves in the format against a seriously depleted Sri Lanka.ALSO READ: Should Pakistan worry about Sarfaraz Ahmed’s form?Form guidePakistan LWLLW (completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka WLLLLIn the spotlightPakistan’s fielding had briefly been outstanding, during the back end of Steve Rixon’s stint as fielding coach. Since his departure from their dressing room, though, their fielding standards appear to have slipped substantially – the ODI on Wednesday pockmarked by repeated ground-fielding errors, including a comically woeful attempt at stopping an errant throw, which yielded four overthrows as two fielders fell over in its wake. In T20Is, where an extra ten runs can mean the difference between a comfortable win and a very tight finish, Pakistan’s fielding will be under the microscope.Sri Lanka’s death bowling will be substantially weakened by the absence of Malinga, which means some combination of Nuwan Pradeep, Isuru Udana, Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Rajitha will have to step up. Malinga has not had a reliable death-bowling partner since the falling away of Nuwan Kulasekara, with whom he had once built an outstanding long-term partnership. Here is a chance for the other quicks to showcase their nerves, in what is an audition to be Malinga’s death-overs partner.Avishka Fernando celebrates his fifty•Associated Press

Team newsUmar Akmal is likely to slot into the middle order, while Babar Azam is likely to open. On the seam-bowling front, they will have to decide between Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Amir, Usman Shinwari and Mohammad Hasnain.Pakistan (possible): 1 Fakhar Zaman, 2 Babar Azam, 3 Haris Sohail, 4 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt, wk), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Imad Wasim, 8 Faheem Ashraf, 9 Shadab Khan, 9 Wahab Riaz, 10 Mohammad Amir, 11 Usman Shinwari/ Mohammad HasnainWith Minod Bhanuka having played a decent hand with the bat on Wednesday, he may be preferred to Sadeera Samarawickrama. Pradeep will likely make the XI for his experience, while Isuru Udana is also likely to slot in.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Shehan Jayasuriya, 4 Angelo Perera, 5 Minod Bhanuka (wk), 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt), 7 Lahiru Madushanka, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Wanindu Hasaranga, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Nuwan PradeepPitch and conditionsThe weather is expected to remain good for the duration of the match, but given the cooler evenings in October, teams may have to contend with some dew on the outfield. The pitch is expected to be decent for batting.Stats and triviaBabar’s recent T20I record is no less fearsome than his ODI record. Since the start of 2018, he averages 54.21 in the format, with a strike rate of 134, across 16 innings. Only five members of Sri Lanka’s T20I squad in Pakistan played the team’s most-recent T20I, against New Zealand last month. Pakistan have won 13, and lost only five of their T20Is against Sri Lanka. They have won each of their last six encounters in the format.
