Man City weighing up free move to sign "strong" midfielder Guardiola loves

In the middle of a season to forget, Manchester City are reportedly weighing up a free deal to sign a much-needed reinforcement who Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for in the past.

Man City transfer news

Whether it’s Valencia’s Pepelu or Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes, it’s clear that Manchester City must welcome midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window and during the summer. For the first time since Guardiola’s first season – in which he dropped the likes of Joe Hart – Manchester City are in need of a rebuild if they want to regain a dominant foothold on English football.

Man City preparing move to sign "outstanding" main target to replace Rodri

The Blues desperately need reinforcements…

Of course, the season-ending injury to Rodri far from helped but a torrid run of form has quickly presented a number of problems that those at the Etihad must solve. That said, replacing Rodri for at least the rest of the season should remain top of their wishlist, especially if it going to be a player of Guimaraes’ calibre.

The Newcastle star remains one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League and is reportedly willing to leave St James’ Park as early as January to hand City an instant boost. And he may not be the only midfielder to arrive.

According to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Manchester City are now weighing up a move to sign Paul Pogba in a free transfer ahead of his return from an 18-month suspension in March. The Frenchman saw his initial four-year ban reduced to just 18 months after a successful appeal and will now be looking to return and make an instant impact to rewrite the narrative.

Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

If he’s looking to steal headlines, then a move to Manchester City would certainly be the way to go too. Having previously been at the centre of criticism during his Manchester United days, Pogba could now get the chance to become the catalyst behind his former rivals’ rebuild to deal the Red Devils the ultimate blow.

Guardiola could finally unlock "strong" Pogba

Unlocking Pogba was, ultimately, a task that Manchester United never quite managed to achieve in what left them with plenty of transfer regret. Whilst France benefitted from the best version of the midfielder as he played a crucial part in their 2018 World Cup win, the Red Devils were stuck trying their best to figure out the impossible combination to enjoy the same benefits.

The code word they were looking for all that time may well turn out to be ‘Guardiola’, however. The Manchester City boss knows exactly how to get the best out of players and the prospect of the Spaniard getting the chance to work with Pogba – even at the latter stages of the Frenchman’s career – should be enough to intrigue those at The Etihad into a potential deal.

The City boss has been full of praise for Pogba in the past, telling reporters as relayed by The Independent during the midfielder’s first Juventus spell all those years ago: “Now, he is a Juventus player. He’s very strong and very young. He’s shown his value, but I know he’s happy at Juve and I wish him a long career. Would I like to coach him? It doesn’t depend on me, but on the club.”

Mason Greenwood hailed as 'someone I really adore' by Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi as Italian coach reveals ex-Man Utd forward will be recalled

De Zerbi criticised Greenwood earlier this month, saying he "expected more from him" and dropped him to the bench. Now, the former Brighton head coach has praised the 23-year-old's efforts in training and opened the door to returning him to the starting lineup on Saturday at Reims.

    WHAT ROBERTO DE ZERBI SAID

He told reporters: "He's someone I really adore, just as I adore his father. He had a bit of a difficult time with the birth of a daughter. He's not used to playing intense seasons as a main player. He didn't push 100% and his physical condition declined. My project is to create something. Luis Enrique in Paris, he created a soul, a way of thinking, for example. He agreed to train before the group. He trained very well this week. When he pushes and feels good, in my team, he's the one who plays with 10 other players. If he doesn't, not because he's a bad boy, well he has to stay on the bench. Tomorrow, he'll play."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood has arguably been Marseille's best player this season, scoring 16 goals and bagging three assists. That is why many would have been shocked to see the one-time England international among the substitutes in their last two Ligue 1 games. De Zerbi is trying to make it clear that nobody is bigger than the team, while pointing to the harmony that Luis Enrique has instilled at Paris Saint-Germain. But it is a fine line as Greenwood has been linked with big transfer moves this summer, and instances like this may push him to seek an exit.

    WHAT NEXT?

Greenwood, who swapped Manchester United for Marseille last summer for £27 million ($35m), will hope to be in his team's starting XI on Saturday at 4pm against Reims.

Ollie Robinson makes impressive return to action

Ollie Robinson made an impressive return to action after four months out with three wickets on the second day of Sussex’s LV= County Championship match against Middlesex at Hove. The 28-year-old hasn’t played since January when he suffered back spasms during the Ashes series. An infection delayed his return to domestic action, but he wasted little time in making his presence felt by bowling Sam Robson with his fifth ball before striking again in the first over of both his second and third spells.Robinson sent down two five-over spells and had another three-over burst after tea to finish with three for 37 from his 13 overs as Middlesex replied to Sussex’s 392 with 284 for 6 before bad light ended play seven overs early. He made an inauspicious start – his first delivery was a no ball – but after bowling an away-swinger at Robson he moved one back off the seam to knock out off stump as Robson, who made 235 when the teams last met in September, offered no shot.Robinson returned after lunch to remove Middlesex captain Peter Handscomb, who left a ball which tailed in to hit leg stump before ending a fifth-wicket stand of 130 in 36 overs between Max Holden and John Simpson when an inswinger took out Simpson’s middle stump after he’d made 71, his fourth fifty of the season. It was an impressive effort by Robinson who was well backed up by the rest of the Sussex attack.Related

George Garton is also making his first appearance of the season after recovering from long Covid and he picked up a wicket when Mark Stoneman chased a ball he could have ignored and was caught behind. The left-armer Sean Hunt removed Robbie White with his sixth delivery, although White also went after a ball well wide of off stump and Handscomb’s dismissal left Middlesex in trouble 45 for 4.But Simpson and Holden prospered during the afternoon although Simpson was dropped at extra cover on 31 by Cheteshawar Pujara off leg-spinner Mason Crane’s first ball.It took a fine delivery from Robinson to separate the two left-handers, but Holden reached his second half-century of the summer which included an upper-cut six off Garton that smashed a window in one of the flats overlooking the ground.Holden (58) lost his off stump sweeping Crane from outside off stump but Martin Andersson made the most of a reprieve when Hunt dropped him on the mid-wicket boundary on 19. With Luke Hollman he added an unbroken 71 for the seventh wicket, the aggressive Hollman going to his fifty just before the close.Earlier, Sussex’s last four wickets had fallen in 31 balls for the addition of 29 runs as their first innings ended on 392, which would have been a disappointment after they’d been 246 for 2 on the first day.Garton reached a 75-ball fifty before he thick-edged to second slip, the first of two wickets for Andersson whose slower ball foxed Robinson, who drove to long on.Shaheen Shah Afridi picked up two wickets to finish with 3 for 97. A searing yorker took out Aaron Beard’s middle and leg stumps while Crane top-edged a hook and was caught at deep mid-wicket.

Maresca must sell £35m Chelsea flop who Boehly was "delighted" to sign

After Todd Boehly’s takeover of Chelsea back in May 2022, no one could have predicted the massive influx of transfers that would take place at Stamford Bridge.

The American purchased the club from Roman Abramovich for a reported £4.25bn, but despite the huge acquisition to buy the Blues, he’s since invested a whole heap of cash into the playing squad.

Nearly three years on since he arrived in London, Boehly has spent around £1.2bn on new talents, investing for the present whilst also keeping one eye on the future.

Somehow, the club have avoided any punishment from the Premier League for breaking PSR or FFP – an unthinkable situation given the funds they have spent in recent times.

With such an array of transfers made, it’s obvious that some were going to fail to live up to expectations, but there are numerous who have caught the eye since their move to the Bridge.

Some of Chelsea’s best signings of the Boehly era

Striker Nicolas Jackson was a player who came under fire during last season under the former management regime despite scoring 14 Premier League goals.

However, since Enzo Maresca’s appointment during the summer, the Senegalese has taken his game to the next level – starring in front of goal.

The 23-year-old has already found the back of the net eight times in his opening 13 matches, sitting as joint top scorer in the league alongside Cole Palmer with a third of the season already complete.

Moises Caicedo arrived in West London with huge expectations after his £115m transfer from Brighton – a deal that broke the record for being the most expensive in English football.

However, he’s already made 63 appearances, scoring twice, including a phenomenal long-range effort against Bournemouth towards the back end of the season.

The price tag would’ve played on the mind of the 23-year-old, but he’s proven to be worth every penny of the fee paid for his services, but the same can’t be said for one of his current teammates.

The high-earning Chelsea player who Maresca needs to sell

After his summer arrival, boss Maresca has already created a settled side, as demonstrated by their current league standing, which sees them sit third and level on points with second-placed Arsenal.

His arrival has allowed for a fresh start for numerous players, including left-back Marc Cucurella, who has nailed down the position in recent months, featuring in 12 of the 13 Premier League games this campaign.

Other players have not been so lucky, including central defender Benoit Badiashile, starting just one league meeting to date, featuring for a combined 157 minutes.

However, the Frenchman arrived with high hopes after his £35m transfer from Monaco back in January 2023, but he’s only made 44 appearances since his big-money deal, finding himself down the pecking order this season.

Badiashile, who earns £90k-per-week at the Bridge, has mainly been restricted to Europa Conference League appearances this campaign, not at the level required for Maresca given his lack of league action.

He still has plenty of time on his side given his tender age of just 23, but it’s safe to say that the move hasn’t worked out, especially after owner Boehly was “delighted” to secure his services nearly two years ago.

Given his £35m fee, the defender has currently cost the club £800k per appearance he’s made, a huge amount given his lack of impact in recent months.

His hefty wage, unfortunately, doesn’t reflect his game time since the appointment of the Italian, with a transfer away from the Blues potentially needed to kickstart a career which has become rather “dreadful” at Stamford Bridge in the words of pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

There’s no way given his recent form, that the hierarchy would be able to make a profit, potentially taking a massive hit on their investment, but giving him the opportunity to resurrect his once-promising career.

Kamran Ghulam called up to Pakistan Test squad for Bangladesh tour

Kamran Ghulam, who scored a record 1249 runs in the 2020-21 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, has been rewarded with a maiden call-up to Pakistan’s Test squad. The 26-year-old middle-order batter, who is currently on tour with the Pakistan Shaheens squad in Sri Lanka, could make his debut during Pakistan’s upcoming two-Test series in Bangladesh, which begins in Chittagong on November 26.The selectors, meanwhile, have recalled the opener Imam-ul-Haq and the offspinner Bilal Asif, while leaving out Imran Butt, Haris Rauf and Shahnawaz Dahani, who were all part of the 21-member squad that toured the West Indies for Pakistan’s last Test assignment in August. The legspinner Yasir Shah has not been picked since he is recovering from a thumb injury sustained during the National T20 Cup in October.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Ghulam, who hails from Upper Dir in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, surpassed the record of Saadat Ali, who scored 1217 runs during the 1983-84 season of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. He was picked among the players who were part of a training camp ahead of the home Test series against South Africa earlier this year, but wasn’t considered for the final squad of 15, and also ignored for the tours of Zimbabwe and West Indies. But he was kept close to the senior set-up and selected in the Shaheens squad, and he impressed with scores of 58* and 45 in the unofficial Tests against Sri Lanka A.Asif has been brought back to fill in for the injured Yasir. Imam, meanwhile, has been in rich form during the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, scoring 162.66 in five innings at an average of 162.66, with two hundreds including a double-ton. He was part of Pakistan’s Test squad until late last year, when he was ruled out of the tour of New Zealand with a thumb injury. Since then he had been overlooked for selection, with Imran Butt given opportunities to establish himself as opener.Butt played six straight Test matches, but his poor returns put his place under pressure. He made 91 against Zimbabwe in Harare, but he has crossed 15 only once in his nine other Test innings, and he currently averages 17.80. Ex-head coach Misbah ul Haq persisted with him, making a case that players need a longer run to overcome insecurity about their place and begin to express themselves, but following the change in the coaching set-up, Butt has fallen out of favour, despite having scored two hundreds and a 95 in the ongoing first-class season. He holds an emerging-category contract with the PCB, however, and was the leading run-getter in the 2019-20 season.Bilal Asif returns to the Test squad to fill in for the injured Yasir Shah•Getty Images

With Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz now out of the picture in red-ball cricket, Pakistan have looked to build a young fast-bowling attack around Shaheen Shah Afridi, bringing Naseem Shah and Muhammad Musa into the squad and later adding Rauf and Dahani to the larger group. But with Mohammad Abbas, Hasan Ali and the allrounder Faheem Ashraf all returning after recovering from injury, the management has begun to streamline the pace unit. While Naseem remains in the squad, the selectors have let go of Rauf and Dahani, who will return to Pakistan after the T20I leg of the Bangladesh tour and play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.Pakistan have plenty of options in the spin department, with offspinner Sajid Khan, left-arm spinner Nauman Ali, legspinner Zahid Mahmood and bowling allrounder Mohammad Nawaz all in the 20-member squad alongside Asif.”We have selected the squad following discussions with the team management and after taking into consideration the opposition’s potential make-up and the conditions in which the Tests will be played,” Mohammad Wasim, the chief selector, said in a statement. “As we already have four frontline fast bowlers, we have allowed Haris Rauf and Shahnawaz Dahani to return to Pakistan after the T20Is so that they can play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and prepare for Australia Tests.”An in-form left-hander Imam-ul-Haq has replaced Imran Butt, who managed to score at 17.8 in 10 Test innings, but he has a chance to continue to play and perform in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy so that he can force his way back in the side. Bangladesh are strong side in their backyard but we have the resources, talent and experience to perform strongly and then carry that momentum into the Australia Tests, which will be part of the ICC World Test Championship.”This will be Pakistan’s first tour to Bangladesh since 2015 and the two-match series will be the part of the ICC World Test Championship.

After Guilavogui: Leeds could sign an even bigger prospect than Joseph

Leeds United centre-forward Mateo Joseph has found himself on the bench in the last three Championship matches, as Joel Piroe has started ahead of him.

Despite this recent stint on the bench, the Spain U21 international has emerged as a genuine first-team option for Daniel Farke in the 2024/25 campaign.

The 21-year-old academy graduate has produced two goals and three assists in eight Championship starts for Leeds this term, which shows that he has made a positive impact in the final third.

Mateo Joseph

At the age of 21, Joseph is a promising talent who still has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come at Elland Road.

Leeds, however, could find an even bigger prospect than the former U21s star by swooping to sign a player who has been linked with a move to the club.

Leeds United linked to Danish prodigy

Leeds have just announced the signing of Josuha Guilavogui on a free transfer, penning a deal until the end of the 2024/25 season following injuries to both Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.

However, that’s not the only business they could be looking to conduct over the forthcoming months.

Indeed, it was recently claimed by the Daily Mail, that Elland Road is one of the potential destinations for RB Salzburg attacker Adam Daghim.

The 19-year-old starlet, who can play out wide on either flank or through the middle as a centre-forward, has been linked with the Whites, Leicester City, and Brentford.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

All three clubs were named as potential moves for the Danish youngster ahead of the upcoming transfer window, whilst it was also pointed out that Leeds have links to Red Bull through their new sponsorship deal, which could give them an advantage over the two Premier League sides.

It was not revealed, however, how much RB Salzburg would demand for the young attacker, or if the West Yorkshire outfit are willing to make a move for him in January.

Farke could, though, land an even bigger prospect than Joseph by pushing for the club to secure a deal for the teenage dynamo at the start of next year.

Why Adam Daghim is a bigger prospect than Mateo Joseph

Firstly, it is worth mentioning that Daghim only turned 19 in September, whilst the Spaniard turned 21 this week, and this means that he has two more years of development to go through before he is where Joseph is.

Despite that, the Dane has already scored eight goals at senior level – three more than the Leeds youngster has managed (five) in his first-team career at Elland Road.

Daghim spent the second half of last season on loan with FC Liefering in the second division of Austrian football and caught the eye, with a return of six goals and six assists in 22 league games.

The teenager was described as a “huge talent” by scout Jacek Kulig, who – as you can see in the post below – once claimed that he has 9/10 potential in a multitude of roles.

Daghim returned from his loan in the summer and has emerged as a first-team player for Salzburg, scoring two goals in all competitions for the Bundesliga side.

Playing regularly as a right-winger, the Danish gem has created two ‘big chances’ in seven starts in the Bundesliga and has made two appearances in the Champions League.

His form at such a young age, whilst Joseph has scored five goals in 43 games for Leeds, suggests that the Salzburg whiz is an even bigger prospect than the Whites ace, as he has contributed with more in the final third and played at a higher level – in the Champions League – whilst being two years younger.

Wolves wanted to sign "unplayable" star for £21m, now he’s worth £103m

Since losing Raul Jimenez back in 2023, when the Mexican made his move to Fulham, Wolves have been trying to replace their talisman in an attempt to spike their goalscoring numbers.

Jimenez made 166 appearances for Wolves, scoring 57 goals, providing 23 assists, and totalling 12,749 minutes played for the club.

raul-jimenez-wolves

Last season, Wolves managed to score 50 goals, far better than their previous two years when they only achieved sub-40. If Gary O’Neil’s side want to avoid a relegation battle this season, they are going to need to find a similar number of goals.

How they must wish they signed this man last summer…

Wolves missed out on Viktor Gyokeres

Last summer, Wolves were interested in signing Coventry forward, Viktor Gyokeres, according to Sky Sports, with other Premier League clubs such as West Ham and Crystal Palace also interested.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

The Swede had made 50 appearances for Coventry in all competitions during the 2022/23 season, scoring 22 goals and providing 12 assists. But it was Sporting that won the race for Gyokeres in the summer of 2023, securing his services for around €26million (£21.5m).

Since then, the “unplayable” striker – as he was described by former teammate Max Biamou – has been nothing short of incredible. Indeed, the attacker has made 58 appearances for Sporting, scoring 54 goals and providing 18 assists. He’s pretty damn good, let’s put it like that.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Now, the Sweden international is reportedly valued at close to £103m by the Portuguese club, with Arsenal and Chelsea now interested in the prolific goalscorer.

If Wolves had managed to snap him up last summer, they would have their new talisman, and a good one at that.

Gyokeres compared to Wolves' current striker options

Wolves did make a new signing in the striker department this summer, adding Jorgen Strand Larsen from Celta Vigo on an initial loan deal.

The striker has started all of Wolves’ Premier League games so far, playing 411 minutes, and scoring once.

The other player to make an appearance upfront for Wolves this campaign is the out-of-favour Goncalo Guedes, who did actually score when starting in attack against Brighton in the EFL Cup, losing the game 3-2.

The 27-year-old also scored both goals during a 2-0 win against Burnley – also EFL Cup – when starting as the centre forward.

So, how do they both compare to that man Gyokeres?

The metrics with N/A for Guedes are due to his score being 0.00 (Carabao Cup games not tracking those particular stats), but all in all, the metrics show quite clearly the level of disparity between Wolves striking options, and Gyokeres.

Larsen does show he has certain traits, such as aerial prowess, winning 2.89 aerials per 90, and linking play to provide assists (0.41 per 90). However, his all round game with progression via carrying and passing, shot volume, and shot-creating actions are very far off the Swedish sensation.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

The 24-year-old Larsen, and 27-year-old Guedes could prove to be enough for Wolves this season, but fans may think, if they had signed Gyokeres, how much easier it would have been.
