  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Rossoneri are expected to make a change in the dugout this summer, with Pioli paying the price for failing to land major silverware. While he is preparing to walk away from San Siro, the 58-year-old Serie A title-winning coach is predicting a bright future in Milan.

    WHAT PIOLI SAID

United States internationals Pulisic and Yunus Musah will hope to form part of that, with Pioli telling reporters on the back of a crushing 5-1 victory over Cagliari: “We have players who have an incredible potential, sometimes they manage to express that on the field, sometimes they do not. It’s true that individual talents help you to overcome difficult moments, but we always approached matches as a team.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic bagged a brace against Cagliari, taking him to 15 goals in what has been a career-best campaign, but Pioli added when asked if summer arrivals from 2023 have outperformed the old guard at Milan this season: “I do not agree. No team managed to maintain the incredible level of performance and results that Inter did. This is a squad that gave its all, but couldn’t maintain the same consistency as Inter and therefore could not stay close enough to keep it open during those decisive moments of the campaign. We also lost confidence, but Inter were a level ahead of everyone, not just us.”

Milan have two games left to take in, with a runners-up finish in Serie A being wrapped up, and Pulisic is among those hoping to have a prominent role to play in 2024-25 – with any new boss expected to embrace the many qualities that he brings to the fold.

Birmingham faced relegation from the Championship despite registering a 1-0 win over Norwich City in the final game of the season. They needed a victory and a few favourable results from fellow relegation fighters to stay up. While they did their part, Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers all emerged triumphant in their respective fixtures.

With the Blues getting relegated, an all-American showdown awaits in the English third tier as they are set to face Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham next season. The Red Dragons finished second in League Two and gained consecutive promotions.

DID YOU KNOW?

Very few fans would have imagined that Birmingham would be going down when Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was handed over charge in October. They were sixth in the league when the former England striker took over but found themselves languishing in the 20th spot after managing to win just twice in 15 matches before he was finally relieved of his duties after just 83 days.

Ratcliffe set to land first Man Utd deal with talks held for another move

Manchester United are set for some major changes off the field and agreements are already afoot at Old Trafford as prospective investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to put his own stamp on the Premier League giants, as per reports.

Manchester United takeover updates

Manchester United are just a week shy of being on the market for a whole calendar year after the Glazer family commenced "a process to explore strategic alternatives" on the same day that Cristiano Ronaldo controversially left the club by mutual consent. Of course, the question of the Red Devils being up for full sale is still debatable, given reports that the Glazer family didn't harbour the belief that anyone could get close to their asking price to take absolute control of the club at their expense, as per The Daily Mail.

Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani had submitted several bids to to try and buy Manchester United; however, his final offer of £5 billion wasn't enough to appease the Red Devils' much-maligned hierarchy and he subsequently withdrew from the process, leaving Ratcliffe in pole position to acquire a minority 25% stake in the club.

Ratcliffe and petrochemicals firm Ineos are now days away from being installed as minority stakeholders at Manchester United, according to Sky Sports. In light of this, changes are already taking place behind closed doors at Old Trafford, with Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold set to leave the club after just two years as part of a major shake-up.

Interim CEO Patrick Stewart will take over from Arnold while the search for a new chief executive takes place, and fresh reports have indicated who that man is likely to be, also giving insight into other potential off-field recruits at Manchester United.

Jean Claude Blanc in the frame…

Taking to social media platform X, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Auona has delivered some important news detailing who could be set to replace Arnold as chief executive alongside providing two candidates for the sporting director role at Manchester United.

"Jean Claude Blanc is set to become Manchester United's new CEO, once the purchase of Jim Ratcliffe's shares has been completed. MU also want Paul Mitchell. The former Monaco manager is ready to sign, but some details have yet to be finalized. MU has also held discussions with Michael Edwards."

Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Chief executive candidate Jean Claude Blanc was most recently involved with Paris Saint-Germain and was also CEO of Juventus; however, more importantly, his link to Ratcliffe is through the fact that he left the former to oversee Ineos' sports portfolio, including Ligue 1 side OGC Nice and Swiss outfit Lausanne-Sport.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell has been linked with Manchester United for a long time and has worked in senior recruitment roles at AS Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur, RB Leipzig and Southampton, as cited by The Mirror. On the other hand, Michael Edwards was sporting director at Liverpool in his last position and also had stints as technical director and an analyst. At the same time, he has also held chief analytical roles at Tottenham and Portsmouth.

Whatever direction Manchester United choose to take in their new dawn under Ratcliffe, there is plenty of work to be done to ensure that the Red Devils return to the top table in English football.

Australia summon Marsh home after Glamorgan injury

Shaun Marsh’s shoulder injury is serious enough for him to miss the rest of the English season with Cricket Australia’s eyes on a Test series against Pakistan in October

Cricket Australia has withdrawn Shaun Marsh from the rest of his county contract with Glamorgan after a scan on his shoulder injury revealed ligament and joint damage which threatens to be the start of another lengthy lay-off.Australia will be anxious for Marsh to regain full fitness in time for their Test tour of the UAE to face Pakistan in October. They will rely on him heavily with Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft still serving lengthy bans for their part in the ball-tampering affair.Glamorgan’s physiotherapist Mark Rausa has been in contact with the Cricket Australia medical team since Marsh injured his shoulder while fielding in Glamorgan’s defeat to Sussex Sharks in the Vitality Blast on Sunday.Having looked at the scan results they have requested Marsh that he returns to Australia on Tuesday for further assessment.Marsh, who had his finest Test campaign in the last Australian summer, scoring two centuries during their Ashes victory, has suffered a string of injuries during his career, including chronic back and hamstring problems. He also required surgery on his left elbow in 2014 that kept him out of action for several months. He was Australia’s best batsmen as they were whitewashed by England in the ODI series last month, scoring two hundreds in five games, but his Glamorgan form has faltered after making a century on Championship debut..Seamer Marchant de Lange is also likely to miss the entire T20 tournament. His hamstring injury has recurred.”Losing Marchant for the rest of the competition and in Shaun’s case, the season, is a big blow,” Glamorgan’s director of cricket, Hugh Morris, said.”As a proven international batsman, Shaun will leave a big hole at the top of the order and we are currently considering our options and are looking at options for replacing him for the rest of the season.”Marchant was one of our best bowlers in the T20 competition last year and is an inspirational character in the dressing room. However, we have a strong bowling line-up and I’m sure we will be able to fill that gap with the players we have available.”

West Ham: Irons wanted £5m star who then became worth £80m & better than Rice

West Ham United have revelled in a stunning rise over the past several years, with the (second) managerial appointment of David Moyes proving to be a masterstroke in building a project of illustrious success, something that was achieved in June with a 2-1 victory over Italian side Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final.

When the Scottish gaffer took the helm in 2019, the Hammers were in disarray and in danger of losing a coveted spot in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone before the turn of the new year and clearly a squad devoid of confidence and direction.

But if the West Ham faithful thought that his industrious managerial approach would stem the flow of malaise then they were very wrong indeed.

West Ham United managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

Yes, Moyes carefully constructed an outfit capable of not just escaping the threat of the drop zone but actually eclipsing the expectations of the fanbase and securing three successive European campaigns – the third and current adventure courtesy of that silver-laden triumph in the Conference League.

At the centre of the feats was Declan Rice, homegrown prodigy and all-conquering midfield sensation, and it really is no coincidence that his ascendency coincides with his former side's rise to prominence.

What did Declan Rice achieve at West Ham?

After completing 245 appearances for West Ham and posting 15 goals and 13 assists, Rice earned a £105m transfer to divisional rivals Arsenal in July, which is a record for a British player.

Praised as a "force of nature" by journalist Rob Blanchette, Rice provided the Hammers with the energy, confidence and technical quality to turbo-charge the midfield and serve as the unrelenting engine for all of the exploits under Moyes' wing.

As per FBref, the £240k-per-week gem also ranks within the top 20% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, passes attempted, progressive passes, progressive carries and interceptions per 90 – illustrating the level of ubiquity in his midfield craft.

dan-chesters-declan-rice-west-ham

While the 6-foot midfielder does now earn his wage at the Emirates Stadium with the Gunners, he will always be remembered for his starring role in the most prosperous period of West Ham's modern history.

It's hard to imagine, but this world-class midfielder could have seen his impact eclipsed across recent years, with one N'Golo Kante very nearly signing for the club eight year ago.

Did West Ham nearly sign N'Golo Kante?

In 2015, West Ham were rumoured to hold an interest in Ligue 1 side Caens' dynamic and energetic centre-midfielder Kante, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Frenchman – who had received comparisons to Chelsea legend Claude Makalele – was being considered as an alternative to Alex Song.

A transfer for Song, notably of Arsenal and Barcelona, was reportedly in danger of falling apart after the Cameroonian midfielder spent the 2014/15 campaign on loan at Upton Park, though he would ultimately agree another season-long loan deal but managed just 12 outings in an injury-hit campaign.

Kante was believed to have been available for just £5m, and West Ham must really kick themselves in the teeth to this day after Leicester City secured his signature for a bargain £5.5m that very summer.

None knew the name at that point, but they would. Kante was instrumental in the middle of the pitch as the Foxes unbelievably won the Premier League, heralded as the signing of the season and lauded for his "incredible quality" by Arsene Wenger.

How good was N'Golo Kante?

After that dream-like maiden year on English shores, Kante would earn a £30m move to Chelsea, where he would ply his trade until the recently-sailed summer, having joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad on a free transfer after seven years at Stamford Bridge.

Lauded for his "magic" on the pitch by former Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas, the 32-year-old World Cup winner has been one of the finest Premier League midfielders of his generation.

Everyone wanted a slice, and while Serie A giants Inter Milan held a vested interest in the star in 2020, Chelsea slapped an £80m price tag on his name to ward off interest in 2020 – which such a fee, though probably warranted, too expensive for the Italian team.

While Rice is still early into his career, on the current evidence Kante is the superior midfielder and it's really quite something to think that West Ham feasibly could have boasted a machine of a higher calibre than the 24-year-old, who will be held in a coveted light for many, many years in east London.

West Ham will hardly rue the fact that Rice plied his trade for the club and not Kante given the immense success that has been achieved over recent years, but the thought of the French midfielder joining the club and cementing a starting berth in the midfield is mouth-watering to say the least.

Especially considering the incredible title triumph that Leicester clinched with the diminutive machine in the middle.

Had Kante earned a spot in the centre, he could have secured success to transcend even the heights that Moyes has reached, potentially even forging an unbreakable bond with Rice in the middle as the England international graced the senior scene for the first time in the later stage of the 2016/17 campaign.

That delightful blend of precocity with established world-class credentials would have served up a deadly concoction – one that likely would have been enough to form the nucleus of a charge to Champions League competition, or perhaps even a glinted taste of the Premier League title.

West Ham may well be basking in rich fruits at present, but just imagine the impact that Kante might've made had a punt been taken on his skills before he moved to Leicester.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

Tottenham Hotspur will host Sheffield United on Saturday in north London as the September international break comes to an end. And Football FanCast has everything you need to know ahead of their meeting in N17 this Saturday.

And it is a fixture which goes back a long way with the teams having first met all the way back in the 1900/1901 FA Cup final. But this will be the first meeting between the sides in the Premier League for a couple of years.

The Lilywhites have made a stunning start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign having taken 10 points from their opening four games with Ange Postecoglou at the helm.

In comparison, the same cannot be said for Paul Heckingbottom's men with the Blades only registering a single point from their opening four games, however, there may be some confidence coming from their draw against Everton before the break.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What's their head-to-head record?

Gareth Bale scores hat-trick against Sheffield United for Tottenham Hotspur.

Meetings between these two clubs go just about all the way back with their first meeting in the 1900/1901 campaign just 11 years after the Blades were formed in 1889.

And since then, there has been 95 clashes coming across all competitions. However, only six of those meetings have come in the Premier League over the last two decades.

The large majority of the games between these two sides came before the millennium with only nine of their 95 clashes coming since 2006.

Although Sheffield United won their last meeting – which came in the FA Cup – it is the Londoners who have recorded the most wins in this fixture over the years.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What's their record at Tottenham?

The first meeting of the season between these two sides is going to be held in Tottenham's state of the art stadium in north London.

Last time out in N17, there was little competition as the Lilywhites ran out comfortable 4-0 victors which saw the on-loan Gareth Bale score a hat-trick with Son Heung-min adding to the score line.

Although the Welshman is not there to provide the Blades any further misery, the likes of Son will be looking to keep up their impressive form under Postecoglou.

And – in north London – this is a fixture which Spurs have certainly enjoyed with the Lilywhites racking up a staggering 29 wins from their 46 games on home soil. Although the Londoners have been held to 11 draws, the Blades have only been able to record six victories in the capital.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What's their record at Sheffield United?

Serge Aurier and John Fleck battle for the ball.

Fortunately for the Blades, on home soil, their record fairs for much better viewing. It is quite the contrast in comparison to their form away at Spurs with the Blades having won 24 of their 47 meetings.

The Blades have only been able to seal the majority of wins at home against Tottenham with 15 draws having been played out, leaving the north London outfit with just eight wins on the road against Sheffield United.

Their last meeting came on home soil and the Blades did seal the victory, however, unfortunately for them, Saturday's fixture is taking place in the capital.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What's their record in the Premier League?

A lot of the meetings between these two clubs did come prior to the conception of the Premier League – as we know it today – with only 10 games having been held in the Premier League.

Perhaps slightly surprisingly, the record doesn't reflect too badly on the Blades with the South Yorkshire side only picking up three victories from those 10 games – all of which coming at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United have also been able to restrict Tottenham to three draws; with the Lilywhites taking away four victories in the Premier League era.

The last outing in the Premier Leage between these two sides was the – aforementioned – 4-0 victory for Tottenham in north London which saw Bale score a hat-trick against the Blades.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: Which team has the most goals?

Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United 4-0.

Tottenham have edged the head-to-head meetings between these two with the Lilywhites winning 38 compared to the Blades' 30 victories.

Given there is only eight victories between the two sides, the scoring has proven fairly even over their history but it is the side from north London who have been able to find the back of the net on more occasions.

Indeed, Tottenham are able to boast a higher return of goals in this fixture having netted 173 goals in comparison to Sheffield United's 155.

It is intriguing to see where those goals have come, however, with 103 of those coming in north London for Tottenham. But the story is completely different up north with the Lilywhites having scored a significant amount less, 65.

Ahead of the game on the weekend, Spurs may take some encouragement from their home record which has seen the Blades only able to find the back of the net 47 times which leaves Saturday's hosts with a ratio of just over 2:1 when it comes to goals at home against United.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What happened in last season's fixtures?

Iliman Ndiaye scores winner for Sheffield United against Spurs

Given the Blades were playing their football in the second tier last season, there was no meeting between these two in the league.

However, fans were treated to an unexpected game when the two sides were drawn against each other in the round of 16 of the FA Cup.

The Blades hosted the game at Bramall Lane on what was a grim night up north – weather wise – and the hosts were able to capitalise on what proved to be a weakened side from Antonio Conte.

With the Italian manager was absent on medical grounds, the Lilywhites decided to rest Harry Kane by starting the England captain on the bench; before realising it may take their star striker to progress to the next round.

But it was the goal from Iliman Ndiaye which stole the headlines at a rainy Bramall Lane as the – now Marseille – midfielder sealed the giant killing to secure United a place in the draw.

Given the dose of reality Spurs were handed last year, the Lilywhites will be fully aware of the shock which the Blades could potentially serve them on the weekend.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What is Son Heung-min's record?

Son Heung-min scores for Tottenham against Sheffield United

It had been a rocky start to the new campaign for the South Korean Spurs captain until their last outing against Burnley.

Indeed, Son went into the game having failed to find the back of the net in Tottenham's opening three games, however, against Burnley, Son was able to net a hat-trick after starting at striker for Postecoglou.

This is a fixture in which the South Korean has made five appearances – including the FA Cup defeat last season – and from his four games in the Premier League against United, he has been able to return two goals.

It is definitely a fixture which Son will relish looking ahead to Saturday with the recently-appointed Spurs captain also registering three assists in those four Premier League games against the South Yorkshire side.

Tottenham vs Sheffield United: What is Tottenham's biggest win?

The north London side enjoyed an impressive 4-0 victory over the Blades in their last meeting in the top flight, but that was not their biggest margin of victory over the South Yorkshire side throughout their history.

Indeed, all the way back in the 1949/50 campaign when Spurs played United in the Second Division, the north London side triumphed by an impressive 7-0 at White Hart Lane.

The game in north London still remains one of the club's biggest margin of victories, although there have been some big wins against the Blades over the years.
