She had long been the leading candidate for the position after stepping in when Matthew Mott left
Andrew McGlashan19-Sep-2022Shelley Nitschke has been named the new head coach of the Australia women’s team for the next four years, after having taken on the role in an interim capacity since Matthew Mott left earlier this year.Nitschke, who had been an assistant coach with Australia since 2018, was in charge of the side as they secured gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and had been the frontrunner for the full-time position. A former allrounder who was capped 122 times, Nitschke is currently Perth Scorchers head coach in the WBBL, a role she shared with her previous Australia position, and she will see out her contract with them this season before leaving.”I’m honoured to have been given this opportunity to lead the team full-time and to continue to build on the legacy created by Matthew Mott,” Nitschke said. “While I enjoyed my time working as assistant coach, I feel the time is right to step up and lead this group in what’s shaping as a new era with a new-look coaching group and the retirement of Rachael Haynes.”The loss of Rach will no doubt be felt, but it presents a great opportunity for others to put their hands up both from a leadership perspective as well as with the bat and in the field. Our challenge is to ensure the team continues to evolve; we’ve seen teams like India take their game to the next level and it’s important that the players feel they have the support they need to keep getting better every day.”Our team continues to go from strength to strength and I’m excited to see what this group can achieve next; there’s some important cricket on the horizon including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February and away Ashes next winter, so it’s a great time to be involved.”Nitschke was in charge when Australia won gold at the Commonwealth Games this year•Getty ImagesNitschke’s first assignment as the permanent head coach will be the T20I tour of India in December. Australia next play on home soil in January against Pakistan before heading to South Africa to defend their T20 title. The make-up of Nitschke’s support staff is yet to be confirmed. Dan Marsh and Jude Coleman were her assistants at the Commonwealth Games after Ben Sawyer left to be head coach of the New Zealand women’s team.”We’re delighted to appoint Shelley as head coach of our world champion women’s team,” Ben Oliver, the general manager of high performance and national teams, said. “She did an outstanding job in an interim capacity during the Commonwealth Games and was the clear standout candidate in the recruitment process.”Shelley is an incredibly well-respected coach with a proven track record. She knows what it takes to be successful at an international level and brings significant coaching and playing experience to the role.”She’s been a great mentor for the spin group since joining as an assistant in 2018, helping develop them into some of the world’s leading bowlers, and we look forward to seeing what the team can achieve with Shelley at the helm.”
Whilst it’s beginning to feel like deja vu, it would once again be an understatement to suggest that Manchester United need a major overhaul under new manager Ruben Amorim.
They needed exactly that when David Moyes arrived, and then again under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. And who could forget a transfer window that featured the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and the arrival of Jadon Sancho under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?
Having rebuilt their side using materials suggested by Erik ten Hag before he saw his house huffed, puffed and blown down by the rest of the Premier League, the Red Devils must look towards the transfer market to help Amorim turn things around at Old Trafford.
The former Sporting CP boss has already shown what he’s capable of by defeating Manchester City and earning a point at Anfield against Liverpool in a game that should have ended in all three, but defeats against the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth have exposed that he cannot work miracles.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 15, 2025
However, if INEOS truly want to turn things around at Old Trafford, signing these five players would be a good place to start.
1 Bryan Mbeumo Brentford
Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford
If INEOS are to prove their transfer genius and take Manchester United away from an era of expensive big-name transfer flops, signing Bryan Mbeumo would be an intelligent first move. The Brentford winger is more than ready for a big move, and as Marcus Rashford heads for an Old Trafford exit, he should be high up on the Red Devils’ list of potential replacements.
Still just 25 years old and at the peak of his powers, Mbeumo’s ability to play as a winger and in the striker role would kill two birds with one stone for Amorim, who could deploy the versatile star next to Rasmus Hojlund.
The Bees have benefited in the past from Mbeumo’s link-up play with a fellow striker when he thrived next to Ivan Toney, and now Manchester United should aim to prosper by combining a powerful forward of their own with the quicker, smarter Brentford man, who’s reportedly worth a hefty £60m this month.
2 Antonee Robinson Fulham
Fulham'sAntoneeRobinsonin action with Arsenal's William Saliba
A problem which remains unsolved even as the revolving door of managers at Manchester United continues is the one at left-back. Whether it’s been Solskjaer, Ten Hag or others, Luke Shaw has remained the man relied upon to take that left-back spot. Amorim and INEOS must simply bring that trend to an end amid the England international’s inability to remain fit.
In his place should be someone like Antonee Robinson. The Fulham star has arguably been the best left-back in the Premier League so far this season, and his attacking output suggests that he’d be ready-made to slot straight into Amorim’s left wing-back role within his Manchester United back five.

3 Goncalo Inacio Sporting CP
Sporting Lisbon's Goncalo Inacio
Whilst some may be scarred by the number of former Ajax players who struggled to perform under Ten Hag, Goncalo Inacio and Amorim could form a far more successful story, which should begin as early as this month.
When looking at Manchester United’s backline, there have been far too many square pegs in round holes to give the United boss a mere fighting chance of consistency.
The former Sporting manager desperately needs a centre-back capable of thriving in his system – ideally, one he knows well. Therefore, Inacio could be the perfect choice. A defender who played his best football under Amorim and one who can play left wing-back and centre-back, all signs point towards him as the ultimate solution for the Red Devils.
Inacio’s name has been mentioned alongside Manchester United for some time, and his reported release clause of just £50m should make any deal even more tempting to pursue before the end of the January transfer window. Next to Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt, the Portugal international could quickly plug what has been a leaky backline in recent months.
5 players who could leave Manchester United this January
Ruben Amorim could look to re-shape his squad this winter.
ByDominic Lund Dec 31, 2024 4 Joao Gomes Wolverhampton Wanderers
Having failed to sign Joao Gomes last summer and eventually settling for Manuel Ugarte, Manchester United should go again in their pursuit of the Wolverhampton Wanderers man to form quite the midfield partnership.
Amorim’s system certainly needs an added No 6 next to Ugarte, and when it’s not Kobbie Mainoo, it simply cannot be Christian Eriksen whom he turns towards. Instead, Gomes should emerge.
Whilst the Brazilian’s reported £38m price tag last summer quickly put United off any deal, Wolves’ current fight to avoid relegation could see that valuation drop just in time for those at Old Trafford to make their move. If the Midlands club were to go down, that £38m price tag should plummet into bargain territory for any club willing to complete a summer swoop.
Ten Hag’s lacklustre midfield was arguably his greatest weakness and the beginning of his downfall, but Amorim can swiftly turn that narrative on its head by welcoming Gomes and turning the Dutchman’s shortcomings into his greatest strength at Old Trafford.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 14, 2025 5 Viktor Gyokeres Sporting CP
Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.
In usual circumstances, any club in the bottom half of the Premier League would be ruled out of signing one of the best strikers in world football. But not every bottom-half side carries the name Manchester United, and not every bottom-half side would have the Amorim advantage in pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres.
The Sporting star thrived under the current United boss and is destined to become a gamechanger wherever he finds himself next, especially if it is Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have been crying out for a talisman for some time. Hojlund arrived and is yet to prove that he’s ready to steal the show, whilst Joshua Zirkzee is arguably more likely to head for the exit door than he is to burst into life in Manchester United colours, opening the door for Gyokeres to do the job that so many have shirked away from.
With a reported release clause of £80m, Gyokeres would not come cheap, but he’d more than pay the Red Devils back if he can replicate the goalscoring record that even Erling Haaland has struggled to match at times this season.

West Ham United chiefs are pursuing their first January signing for new manager Graham Potter, with the Englishman agreeing a two-year-contract to replace Julen Lopetegui this week as co-chairman David Sullivan now attempts to back him.
West Ham appoint Graham Potter as attention switches to January
The former Chelsea and Brighton boss took charge of his first game on Friday night against Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round, and attention now switches to the January market, where technical director Tim Steidten, Sullivan and the club’s board will be hoping to make some needed January additions.

The east Londoners – who currently languish 14th in the Premier League table and possess one of the division’s leakiest backlines this season – are desperately trying to transform their fortunes with the appointment of Potter, a tactician who worked wonders at Brighton on a very limited budget.

West Ham have been repeatedly linked with a new forward, and are believed to be contenders to sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Potter’s former club.
Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates
However, the Irons and any other interested side may have to wait until nearer the end of the month, as Brighton are yet to make a final decision on whether their striker can depart mid-season (GiveMeSport).
Reports in Portugal this week claimed that West Ham have also had a loan bid rejected for Arthur Cabral, but they could still negotiate an agreement if they agree to Benfica’s conditions of an obligatory purchase option of around £12.5 million (A Bola).
Going back to their fragile defence, there are also rumours West Ham are in talks with Senou Coulibaly’s entourage, with the Malian centre-back impressing on-lookers as a standout centre-half of the Cypriot first division.
Steidten and Sullivan’s list of targets is beginning to take shape, but Potter actually has a personal request of his own.
Graham Potter wants Ben Chilwell at West Ham in January
£200,000-per-week Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell has been frozen out of Enzo Maresca’s Premier League squad, and it is now believed that West Ham’s head coach could offer him an escape route across London.
Maresca confirmed that Chilwell could depart Chelsea in the coming weeks, in a pre-match press conference on Friday. According to a report by Football Transfers, Potter personally wants to sign Chilwell for West Ham, and the club are “pushing” to make it happen for him.
Potter’s side are also actively trying to get full-back Vladimir Coufal out of the door to make room for Chilwell, with the former’s contract expiring soon and there being zero sign of a renewal as things stand.
West Ham are after the 28-year-old on a temporary deal, and while his club would prefer to offload him permanently, they’re in fact open to a loan if it means they can get Chilwell off their books for the second half 24/25.
Called an “underrated” player by podcaster Laurenz Vescoli, the former Leicester City star has earned caps for England and captained Chelsea in past seasons, winning the Champions League with them in 2021, so he’s a player of real quality and experience if given the chance.
Everton are interested in signing a “fantastic dribbler” who now wants to leave his club this January, according to a report.
Everton takeover nearing completion ahead of January
The Friedkin Group are now on the verge of completing their takeover of Everton, having received Premier League approval, meaning the new owners could be at the helm by the time the January transfer window begins in just a few weeks time.
With the Toffees currently just three points clear of the bottom three, the new owners may feel that some new reinforcements are needed this winter, and a number of attacking targets have been identified by the current regime, including Corinthians’ Yuri Alberto.
Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto
The Brazilian is considering a move in January, and he could be available for a fee of around £17m, which would make him a relatively affordable option to bolster Sean Dyche’s strike force.
Having scored just 14 league goals this season, Everton may view strengthening their attack as a priority, and it was recently reported that Lyon are now open to selling Ernest Nuamah in order to balance their books this January.
Nuamah wants to leave in January
Now, there has been a new update on Nuamah’s future, with CaughtOffside reporting that Nuamah wants to leave this winter, as he feels he has not received enough game time in Ligue 1 so far this season. A number of clubs are interested in signing the 21-year-old, with Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Fulham also name checked, while European giants AS Roma and Sevilla may also be tempted to make a move.
As it stands, Lyon are holding out for a fee of €25m – €30m (£21m – £25m), but the interested parties are struggling to meet the asking price, meaning they may also consider orchestrating a loan move.

Although the Ghanaian has mainly been limited to cameo appearances as a substitute so far this season, there are signs that he could be a shrewd acquisition for the Toffees this winter. During his time with FC Nordsjaelland, the youngster received praise for his ability on the ball, as well as his shooting.
The starlet’s dribbling ability is particularly impressive, ranking in the 90th percentile for progressive carries per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers in the top European leagues.
That said, Nuamah is yet to really prove himself outside of Denmark, meaning it would be risky for the Toffees to shell out £25m this winter, and it could be wise to take him on loan first, should Lyon be open to that arrangement.
VVS Laxman will step in as India’s head coach on their two-T20I tour of Ireland in late June, filling in for Rahul Dravid, who will instead be in England to assist the team’s preparation for the rescheduled fifth Test from the tour last year as well as the limited-overs series.Dravid will be with India’s Test squad, which will play a four-day game in Leicester from June 24-27, before they move to Birmingham, where the Test against England will be played from July 1-5. He will join the tour party after the conclusion of India’s five-match T20I series against South Africa on June 19 in Bengaluru. There will also be a clash of dates between India’s T20 warm-up games in England – against Northamptonshire and Derbyshire – and the Edgbaston Test, so there is a possibility of Laxman being with the team during those games as well.Laxman is currently the director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, a position he has been in since being appointed last year following Dravid’s elevation as head coach of the national team. He has earlier been involved in coaching capacities with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Bengal in the Indian domestic circuit as a batting consultant. Earlier this year, he was part of the support staff group with the India Under-19 World Cup-winning team in the Caribbean.India’s selectors are likely to pick separate squads for the tours on May 22. This is something they had to do in July last year too, when Dravid helmed the limited-overs leg in Sri Lanka with Shikhar Dhawan as captain, while Ravi Shastri was coach of the Virat Kohli-led Test team in England, for the World Test Championship final as well as the Test series that followed. With barely a week between the end of the South Africa T20Is and the start of the games in Ireland, it remains to be seen if the selectors pick the same squad for the shortest format.India’s Test specialists are likely to leave for England on June 15. The Birmingham Test was pushed back following a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp last year. India, who currently lead the series 2-1, will look to seal their first Test series win in the country since 2007. Incidentally, that series was won under Dravid’s captaincy.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mehedi Hasan Rana bowled effectively in the slog overs to take Fortune Barishal to the BPL final. They beat Comilla Victorians by ten runs, leaving them to face Chattogram Challengers in the second Qualifier on Wednesday.Comilla required 22 off the last two overs and Rana, the left-arm quick, made it a more difficult task for them by conceding just four runs off the penultimate over while picking up the wicket of Faf du Plessis.Mujeeb then bowled superbly, removing Mahidul Islam Ankon and Sunil Narine in the final over in which he gave up just seven runs. In contrast to the high-scoring Eliminator earlier in the day, the first Qualifier was more of an attritional battle. Both batting line-ups suffered collapses, but Barishal’s bowlers eventually saved the day for their team.Big hit(s) When Moeen Ali struck three sixes in his first 14 balls during Comilla’s pursuit of 144, they would have expected a smooth chase. However, after being hit for a huge six off the previous ball, Dwayne Bravo came back and removed Moeen for 22 off 15 balls.Shafiqul Islam had earlier taken two wickets, triggering a top-order collapse while Rana took 2 for 15 in his three overs. He fronted up to bowl the 11th, 17th, and 19th overs for Barishal. Mujeeb helped seal victory with his 2 for 33. Earlier, Barishal had got a rollicking start from Munim Shahriar, who struck four sixes – all through the arc midwicket and long-on – and two fours through the covers. He set the tone for Barishal by taking 16 runs from the first over of the match, bowled by Nahidul Islam. His slap-pull, against Mustafizur Rahman, though was Shahriar’s best shot of the day.Chris Gayle was more sedate at the other end, but Barishal still raced to 57 for 0 in the powerplay.Big miss Barishal missed a big performance from Shakib, who had won the player-of-the-match award in each of Barishal’s last five games before Monday. After managing just 1 with the bat, Shakib went wicketless for the first time in this BPL season. Shakib’s dismissal sparked a batting collapse as Barishal went from a promising 84 for 1 to 143 for 8. Despite Shakib having a rare off-day, Barishal made a great comeback with the ball.
Thunder inflict their third-heaviest defeat in BBL history as they jump to second on the table
Tristan Lavalette08-Jan-2022Sydney Thunder 7 for 209 (Sams 98*, Hales 63, Richardson 2-39) beat Melbourne Renegades 80 (Seymour 25, Hasnain 3-22, Sandhu 2-8, Sangha 2-12) by 129 runsDaniel Sams and a rejuvenated Alex Hales destroyed Melbourne Renegades at Marvel Stadium to set up red-hot Sydney Thunder’s fifth-straight BBL victory. An almost flawless Thunder (7-3) stormed to second on the ladder after Sams (98 not out off 44 balls) and Hales (63 off 28) powered them to a massive 7 for 209 after being sent in. Their disciplined bowlers then tore through meek Renegades batting as Thunder cemented their standing as the BBL’s in-form team. The crushing 129-run victory – the third heaviest in BBL history – was made even more impressive for Thunder after stand-in captain Chris Green was a late withdrawal due to being a close contact of a person who tested positive for Covid-19.The Hales-Sams show Thunder have emerged as a serious title contender even without Hales firing. The English import had a highest score this season of just 35 and also missed a couple of matches due to testing positive to Covid-19.But Hales was always going to emerge from the rut and he did so with trademark pyrotechnics featuring five sixes. The opener needed just 17 balls to surpass his previous best of the season, relishing the short boundaries and launching several slog sweeps into the second tier of the grandstands. He was especially ruthless against Afghanistan’s Zahir Khan, smashing two sixes in his first over, before eventually holing out in the 12th over. There was no respite with Sams, elevated to No.4 after Ashes-bound Sam Billings’ departure, signalling his intention with a second-ball six, and he dominated square of the wicket much like Hales. Sams, who boasts of the highest strike-rate in the tournament, notched his highest BBL score with brute force highlighted by eight sixes.Needing six runs off the final ball, Sams agonisingly fell short of a deserved century with a miscued boundary, but the eye-catching knock of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad member surely may have caught the attention of the national selectors.Zahir struggles amid onslaught Renegades’ attack was without speedster James Pattinson and allrounder Mohammad Nabi, whose spin was particularly handy in their previous outing. Left-arm seamer Josh Lalor made his season debut but struggled to find his rhythm as Renegades had no answer against Hales and Sams with the pair especially laying into Zahir, who finished with 1 for 49 off three overs.Zahir has had a strong season with 10 wickets at an economy rate of 7.81 but he copped a flogging and his confidence slumped. Spearhead Kane Richardson and the youngster Will Sutherland tried hard to stymie the runs but to no avail.Highly-rated Sutherland has had an underwhelming BBL season but showcased his obvious talent by clean bowling Thunder stand-in captain Jason Sangha. He finished with 1 for 23 off 3 overs in a rare positive for Renegades.Mohammad Hasnain had an excellent outing with the ball•Getty ImagesThunder crash through meek RenegadesThunder’s attack didn’t miss a beat without the services of Green and spearhead Saqib Mahmood, who returned to the UK as part of England’s T20 squad for the Caribbean. Pakistani speedster Mohammad Hasnain and legspinner Tanveer Sangha returned as Thunder’s well-oiled machine never gave Renegades a sniff.Hasnain bowled swiftly from the get go to set the tone and he was well supported by seamer Gurinder Sandhu fresh off claiming his third hat-trick in Australian cricket. In his first over back after being sidelined due to Covid-19, Sangha bowled Aaron Finch with a perfect legspinner as Thunder could do no wrong. Sams’ terrific performance continued when he claimed the wicket of Mackenzie Harvey as Thunder’s irresistible form showed no signs of abating.Reality bites for RenegadesIt might have just been a reality check for Renegades, who had leapfrogged two places off the bottom after victories against Covid-19 decimated opponents Melbourne Stars and Heat. They would have felt confident of giving the daunting total a shake under the closed roof but never threatened after losing three wickets in the four-over powerplay. Veteran Shaun Marsh, who has inserted confidence in the team since his recent return, was run out in the third over and skipper Nic Maddinson fell a few balls later as Renegades crashed. The burden was on Finch, who was dropped at slip in the second over, but he couldn’t conjure heroics as Renegades were embarrassingly bowled out in the 15th over.Renegades will need to return to the drawing board after a confidence denting defeat.
Everton manager Sean Dyche will only be too aware that his side face Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in December.
That’s a run of opponents that would strike fear into any club in the Premier League – including all of the aforementioned. For the Toffees, it’s especially concerning, not least because they are 16th in the standings after 11 matches, only three points above Ipswich Town, who sit in 18th.
Not to be pessimistic, but the Toffees’ present attacking fluency simply will not do. The wintry period is bound to inflict adversity upon the Merseysiders, and the frontline must raise its level.

Some of this struggle owes itself to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s inability to harness the prolificness that we know lies latent within his skill set, but it is more indicative of Dyche’s style as a whole.
This is hardly an anomaly either. Last term, though Everton were comfortable despite being hit with an eight-point deduction, they scored just 40 goals across 38 league fixtures, better than only bottom-finishing Sheffield United.
Everton stars Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Everton need something… more. Calvert-Lewin is obviously excellent on his day, provides a focal presence. Iliman Ndiaye is an electric and exciting winger, while Dwight McNeil has hit a new layer of potency this term.
But the Blues need to up the ante in the final third if they are to finally break the bonds that have shackled them to endless frustration around the relegation zone over the past several years.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.
Ademola Lookman would be perfect, but the Atalanta forward hasn’t played for Everton in quite a while now.
Everton flop is now rivalling Messi & Kane
90min’s Sean Walsh has described Lookman as a “superstar”, and it’s probably an apt thing to say, in truth, for the versatile forward has been brilliant in recent years and scored a hat-trick to dismantle Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last season, sending Xabi Alonso’s immortal team into a tail-spin.
Rewarded for his triumph by being placed 14th in the Men’s Ballon d’Or final rankings, awarded earlier this month, Lookman has certainly come a long way since his struggles to assert himself with Everton in English football.
Indeed, Lookman scored four goals across 48 outings for Everton, having joined the club from Charlton Athletic in a deal worth £11m back in 2017, aged 19.
In fairness, while Lookman didn’t manage to bring his raw qualities together at Goodison Park, he did depart for a pretty penny, with RB Leipzig signing the rising star for a £22.5m fee in 2019, having previously taken him into their German brood in 2017/18 – where he posted five goals and four assists across only 11 Bundesliga appearances.
He’s since gone from strength to strength, with his hat-trick for La Dea last season completing a haul of 17 goals and ten assists across all competitions.
The 27-year-old hasn’t exactly slowed down this year, already boasting eight goals and five assists across 14 matches for Atalanta, instrumental in helping Gian Pieri Gasperini’s second-placed side challenge for the Serie A title.
As per FBref, he ranks among the top 5% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 1% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 1% for tackles per 90.
Clearly, he’s not just a goalscorer. He’s not even just a well-rounded, multi-faceted attacking outlet. Lookman is a force to be reckoned with for the Italians, operating beyond the confines of expected positional virtues, instead producing performances that encompass so many areas of the pitch.
Well, would you take a look at that. Lookman’s keenly clinical edge is seeing him put in some pretty impressive conversations, with CIES Football Observatory conveying a list – via Wyscout’s statistical system – that reveals his goal-contribution rate is up there with the best.
Namely, Lionel Messi and Harry Kane.
Omar Marmoush and Lookman
Neither forward needs an introduction, but the very fact that Lookman’s vein of performance has been sustained and directed at Atalanta, to a point that puts him alongside such names (as well as Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski) is a rueful thing for Everton, who might have helped him realise his potential on Merseyside in some alternate football reality.

This summer, top European outfits such as Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain were interested in signing the Nigerian, and Atalanta responded by demanding €70m (£59m) recompense for the loss of their trophy-winning talisman. This, obviously, dissuaded the parties in question.
Even so, he’d have fetched a pretty penny. Perhaps another suitor, in different circumstances, would have forked out a greater fee for this mercurial talent.
Ademola Lookman
It could have been so much more for Everton, who need a striker of Lookman’s quality, and could definitely do with banking on such an illustrious star.
