Arteta must bench Rice & unleash Arsenal star "on the same level as Pedri"

It would be fair to say that this season is going about as well as any Arsenal fan could’ve hoped for back in the summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side are three for three in the Champions League without conceding a goal and currently sit atop the Premier League, seven points ahead of defending champions Liverpool.

However, the North Londoners have to shift their focus from the major competitions ahead of their League Cup clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night.

The Gunners must do better in the domestic cups this season, but even so, Arteta should look to replace Declan Rice in the lineup with another international star.

Changes Arteta should make to the team

While this isn’t a game Arteta should take lightly, it is nowhere near as important as the league, and therefore, with the squad he has at his disposal, he should be looking to make some changes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Starting in goal, Kepa Arrizabalaga should be given another start, and to ensure William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães are given a rest, Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie should start together for the first time.

Likewise, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber are in need of a rest, and in their place, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ben White should come back into the side.

At the base of midfield, Martin Zubimendi should be replaced by fellow summer signing Christian Nørgaard, and while there is an argument to also rest Eberechi Eze, it might be good for him to stay in the team following his goal on the weekend.

Moreover, by keeping the former Crystal Palace star in the lineup, Arteta can start Ethan Nwaneri on the right in place of Bukayo Saka, who was reportedly unwell against the Eagles, and therefore shouldn’t be anywhere near the team on Wednesday.

Finally, injuries once again leave the manager with few options when it comes to changing the striker and left-wing setup.

For example, while it would be great to hand Viktor Gyokeres a rest, the fact that Gabriel Martinelli is now out means he’s unlikely to get one.

This is because Leandro Trossard will now have to stay out wide instead of starting down the middle.

With all that said, there is one more regular starter who should be replaced: Rice.

The Arsenal star who should replace Rice

Like many of the other stars in the team, Arteta simply must drop Rice to the bench for the game against Brighton on Wednesday for a couple of reasons.

First of all, he just needs a rest as he’s already played 937 minutes of football for Arsenal this season, and he came off with a slight knock on the weekend.

Second, his importance to the side is massive, as on top of everything he does in open play, his deliveries are also one of the main reasons the team have been so utterly incredible at set-pieces.

With that said, who should come in to replace him?

Well, with Norgaad replacing Zubimendi and Eze potentially keeping his place in the team, the most obvious and best option would be Mikel Merino.

The Spanish international might be just a step below the former West Ham United captain, but he remains a top-level midfielder and someone who is capable of impacting the game in all phases of play.

For example, FBref ranks him in the top 1% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for aerial duels won, the top 2% for non-penalty goals and touches in the opposition’s penalty area, the top 11% for through ball and more, all per 90.

Moreover, he has also transformed into a lean, mean goalscoring machine for club and country this year.

Since the start of 2025, he has scored nine goals and provided three assists for the Gunners.

On top of that, the 6 foot 2 titan has scored eight goals and provided one assist for Spain this year, which is a run of form that has seen his manager, Luis de la Fuente, claim he is “on the same level as Pedri and Rodri.”

Ultimately, Merino has proven himself to be an excellent player in most areas of the pitch, and therefore, he should be the one to come in for Rice against Brighton.

Mikel Arteta references Son Heung-min miss again with 'margins' lesson as Arsenal look to finally end 22-year wait for Premier League title

Mikel Arteta has revisited memories of Son Heung-min's miss for Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester City in May 2024 to explain the fine "margins" that determine the title race, with Arsenal looking to end a 22-year wait for the Premier League crown. The second of three successive seasons in which the Gunners finished as runners-up saw them nearly come top.

The miss that changed everything

In May 2024, Tottenham were facing Pep Guardiola’s relentless Manchester City, and Arsenal’s title hopes hinged on their rivals – if Spurs at least drew, the Gunners would go into the final day of that season top of the table. With City leading 1-0 in the dying minutes, Son raced clear on goal, one-on-one with substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who had replaced Ederson. A goal would’ve made it 1-1 and surely kept Arsenal in first place, but Ortega stood tall, made himself big, and parried the effort away. City went on to win the match 2-0 and the Premier League title on the next matchday by just two points. Arsenal's hopes were dashed and after that painful miss, Son admitted to the profound emotional toll it took on him.

"I’m also human," Son told the later in an interview. "But I take the responsibility not to score that big chance for the team, because the team was working really hard and trying to get a good result."

That miss from Son reshaped the landscape of English football in ways no one could’ve imagined. Tottenham were licking their wounds from missing out on the top four, but later embarked on a remarkable run through Europe and went on to win the Europa League, ending a 17-year trophy drought. Aston Villa, who finished fourth thanks to City’s win, secured Champions League football for the first time since 1983. But for Arsenal and Arteta, it was nothing short of agony.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportArteta talks about 'margins' that determine a title race

As Arsenal once again find themselves top of the table, four points clear of second-placed Bournemouth, Arteta reflected on that defining night when asked if this could finally be the season they go all the way.

"At the end, you learn that the margins at the end to achieve it or not are multiple," he said. "So it can be that an opposition player is one against one against the keeper, he scores that goal, you are champion. The other keeper saves it you are not champion. It can be other injuries, it can be other decisions, it can be a mistake of mine, it can be that many factors that we cannot control that outcome or we can control it while we can do the best. That's it."

Arteta learnt through heartbreak that perfection isn’t always rewarded. However, this season, the Gunners have been in fine form and look perfectly in control of their destiny, at least for now. But he refuses to get carried away.

"So it's a lot of factors that have a lot of factors that have to go your way. You can do a lot of great things, and still a lot of things have to go your way, and the injuries and the players that you have to play, and they have to be there, and the personal lives have to be perfect because if not, it can unbalance," he went on a rant. "It's so many things guys, and it's still so so long, and we've seen already the turnaround in the league and going to the Champions League is the same. All the leagues are the same. We are not really in a specific context at the moment, and let's focus day by day."

Arteta vows to keep away all distractions

Arsenal have come close to being crowned champions but have always fallen short in the last lap. When Arteta was asked, when does the title race start for him, he fired back: "In pre-season. So, for me it's the first day in pre-season just trying to prepare the team and individuals in the best possible way and go with them back in because this is it's going to be so long.

"We have to focus on the journey and what we have to do every single day. Fixing the outcome, of course, we want to win it, and the preparation is towards that. Great. And now we have set all the protocols, processes, ambitions, everything and now you have to focus on what you have to do. If not, you get distracted with the rest, and I don't want any of that in and around the team."

Getty Images SportWill Arsenal's 22-year-wait finally end in 2026?

It’s been more than two decades since Arsenal’s Invincibles stormed to an unbeaten league title under Arsene Wenger. Since then, the north London giants have endured countless false dawns, near-misses, and seasons that promised so much but fell apart under pressure. However, there is a renewed belief in the squad as they appear determined to right those wrongs and finally bring back the Premier League trophy to the Emirates.

Batters fire before rain-hit match is tied

Surrey 159 for 5 (Franklin 48*, Chathli 44*, Gray 2-18) tied with Essex 93 for 5 (Winfield-Hill 49, Chatterji 2-12, Harris 2-22) DLS methodPhoebe Franklin and Kira Chathli shared an explosive unbroken partnership of 72 from 35 balls as Surrey and Essex fought out a dramatic rain-affected tie in the Vitality Blast. The home side slumped to 45 for 4 at the Kia Oval, with former Surrey seamer Eva Gray taking 2 for 18 before Franklin, with an unbeaten 48 from 23 and Chathli (44 not out from 38) reinvigorated their innings. That late recovery, with the last four overs yielding almost 60, enabled Surrey to post 159 for 5, but rain during the interval left Essex to chase an amended target of 94 from 10 overs instead.Lauren Winfield-Hill’s pugnacious 49 from 27 kept the visitors firmly in the hunt but, with two needed off the final ball, Jo Gardner was run out coming back for the second and the spoils were shared.Depleted by England call-ups, the home side drafted in Hampshire youngster Rachel King on loan for her debut as Bryony Smith’s opening partner and the pair added 25 from four overs after being put in.But both openers departed in similar fashion, snicking behind as they misjudged the pace of the ball and Surrey were floundering after Gardner’s throw from extra cover ran out Alice Monaghan and Grace Harris was caught in the deep for a second-ball duck.Chathli and Alice Davidson-Richards, with 21 from as many balls, rebuilt the innings with a stand of 42 from 40 and, although Gray tempted the latter to hole out to deep midwicket, Surrey maintained their impetus. With Essex beginning to lose their way during the death overs, Chathli shrewdly picked out gaps in the field while Franklin’s powerful hitting propelled the home side above the 150 mark.Successive sixes off Sophia Smale in the final over enabled Franklin to outscore her partner and finish with a flourish, but the downpour between innings ensured a drastically revised equation.Essex’s hopes were dented when Priyanaz Chatterji had Lissy MacLeod caught at backward point with her first delivery, but Winfield-Hill went on the offensive immediately, plundering a trio of consecutive fours off Kalea Moore. The opener found the rope with regularity, dominating her second-wicket partnership of 54 from 33 with Maddie Penna, only to miss out on a second half-century of the tournament as she skied Chatterji (2 for 12) to long off.Penna (22 from 19) and Cordelia Griffith took up the baton following Winfield-Hill’s departure, but both fell to Harris (two for 22) in the final over before Franklin’s accurate throw to the keeper left Gardner short and denied Essex victory.

Revis 150, Coad 89 as Yorkshire put squeeze on fellow strugglers Essex

Ninth-wicket stand of 169 followed by top-order strikes to give hosts a window of opportunity

Essex 368 and 33 for 3 trail Yorkshire 459 (Revis 150, Coad 89, Lyth 84) by 58 runsCenturion Matthew Revis and Ben Coad combined to a post a record-breaking ninth-wicket partnership of 169 and fashion a Yorkshire day-three turnaround to give themselves hope of a Rothesay County Championship victory against fellow strugglers Essex at York.Second-bottom Yorkshire and Essex, one place above them in the Division One table, were separated by 14 points ahead of a ninth-round fixture which had advanced to the White Rose county starting this day’s play on 143 for 3 in reply to a first-innings 368.Shane Snater’s seam helped reduce the hosts to 273 for 8 after lunch, claiming three more wickets to add to a solitary strike on day two. Yorkshire were 95 behind at that stage. However, things changed dramatically as allrounder Revis and new-ball seamer Coad scored runs at will against an increasingly ragged Essex attack. Both men posted career best scores, Revis with 150 off 187 balls and Coad 89 off 110 in a total of 459 all out.Essex started their second innings with 16 overs remaining in the day, trailing by 91, and closed on 33 for 3. Coad struck twice with the new ball.Revis and Coad united for the best part of 33 overs to amass the highest ever ninth-wicket partnership for any county against Essex in a first-class match.Essex struck three times during a morning which had started with Adam Lyth and captain Jonny Bairstow at the crease.Bairstow was involved in an engaging battle with Indian overseas left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed on a pitch which remains placid. The former cut two boundaries before falling caught behind for 29 when trying to uppercut another, leaving the hosts 169 for 4 after 61 overs – the seventh of the day.Lyth batted with a calf injury picked up during the latter stages of day two and edged behind a checked drive against Snater on 84, passing 14,000 career runs in the Championship in the process. That was the first of two wickets for the Dutch international in as many overs with the new ball as Yorkshire fell to 228 for 6 in the 84th over, with George Hill trapped lbw on the back pad pushing forwards. After lunch, Simon Harmer’s offspin ousted Will Sutherland lbw before Dom Bess was caught behind down the leg-side, handing Snater a fourth wicket and leaving Yorkshire eight down, 95 behind and in some trouble.Sandwiched in between the seventh and eighth wickets, Revis reached his fifty off 89 balls – his second in as many innings after 93 not out against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last week. What came next, few would have predicted. Revis and Coad pinched a second batting point and denied Essex a third bowling point.Revis played confidently through the off side off front foot and back against seam and spin, later heaving two huge leg-side sixes off Noah Thain’s seam. Coad hoisted two sixes off spin over long-on and straight in reaching his fifty off 69 balls.Yorkshire had secured a lead of two by the time they reached tea at 370 for 8, with Revis unbeaten on 94 and Coad celebrating his second career fifty – and his second against Essex after 69 at Headingley in a 2022 defeat.Revis reached his ton, off 151 balls, inside the opening 10 minutes of the evening and later his maiden 150 off 185 as Essex struggled to finish off the tail – something they have grappled with all summer.Coad was understandably frustrated when bowled by Matt Critchley’s legspin, 11 runs short of what would have been a maiden century. And Revis then holed out to long-on against the same bowler. That left Yorkshire with an hour’s bowling against an Essex top order now under unexpected pressure. That pressure only mounted as Coad continued to influence proceedings. He removed Paul Walter and Tom Westley for ducks as Essex’s second innings slipped to 6 for 2, the former trapped lbw and the latter another batter to be caught behind down leg.And when Hill bowled Dean Elgar with a beauty late in the day, Essex were 28 for 3.

Here's a detailed look at FC Porto's top 10 earners… 10 Alan Varela €24,038 per week

Alan Varela signed a new deal with FC Porto in 2025, seeing his salary increase by €10,000 per week.

The Argentine midfielder has gone from strength to strength in Portugal and is now under contract until 2030.

9 Nehuen Perez €24,038 per week

Centre-back Nehuen Perez made the move to FC Porto from Udinese in 2024.

The Argentina international was only on loan at the Estadio do Dragao, but he made a move permanent in 2025.

8 Diogo Costa €27,692 per week

Academy graduate Diogo Costa made his senior debut for FC Porto in 2019 and hasn’t looked back.

The Portugal international has gone on to be first-choice for club and country in recent years and has even been linked with a big-money move away, so eventually, FC Porto could cash in on one of the best goalkeepers in the game today.

7 Samu Omorodion €31,346 per week

It looked as if Samu Omorodion would be joining Chelsea from Atletico Madrid in 2024, but after a deal broke down, FC Porto came in and secured the forward’s services.

The youngster made an instant impact in Portugal, scoring 11 goals in his first 10 appearances in all competitions.

6 Alberto Costa €36,923 per week

Portuguese full-back Alberto Costa returned to his native country in 2025 after a brief spell in Italy with Juventus.

The former Vitoria S.C right-back cost Porto €15m and signed a five-year contract.

5 Gabri Veiga €38,462 per week

Gabri Veiga was handed the number 10 shirt after signing for Porto from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in 2025.

Like Costa, Veiga also cost €15m and signed a deal until 2030 and can play as an attacking midfielder or out wide.

4 Pepe €40,385 per week

Not to be mistaken with the iconic centre-back who also played for FC Porto, Brazilian winger Pepe is one of three players on €48,077 per week.

After joining from Gremio in 2021, Pepe is under contract until 2027.

3 Jan Bednarek €40,385 per week

After eight years as a Southampton player, Jan Bednarek swapped St Mary’s for FC Porto in 2025 in a deal worth €7.5m.

The centre-back signed a four-year deal and is set to earn €10m in wages during that time.

2 Luuk de Jong €40,385 per week

Experienced striker Luuk de Jong was announced as a shock signing during one of FC Porto’s pre-season fixtures at the Estadio do Dragao.

He didn’t cost Porto a penny, allowing them to give De Jong a €2.5m per year deal.

1 Jakub Kiwior €66,731 per week

Top of the list as FC Porto’s hughest paid player for 2025/26 is defender Jakub Kiwior, who is on loan from Arsenal for the season.

The Poland international found game time hard to come by at the Emirates and there is thought to be an obligation for a deal to become permanent in 2026.

Smith set to play but won't field in the slips because of injured finger

Smith faced fast bowlers without issue in the nets two days out from the Grenada Test, and looks set to replace Josh Inglis, but he will have to field in outfield due to his finger

Andrew McGlashan01-Jul-20251:21

Smith ‘looking forward’ to second Test after injury

Steven Smith remains on track to make a return in the second Test against West Indies in Grenada, after his first full training session since suffering a compound dislocation of a finger against South Africa at Lord’s. But Australia will have to rejig things in the field to accommodate him not being able to stand in the slips.Smith spent a week at his apartment in New York while the Barbados Test was on and only had his stitches removed when he rejoined the squad. He will have to wear a splint for around six more weeks but the earlier confidence from both he and coach Andrew McDonald that he would be able to withstand the rigours of a Test appears to be bearing out.In perfect weather on Tuesday at the National Stadium, the first time any of this Australia squad have set foot in the stadium, Smith initially faced throwdowns from assistant coach Matthew Wade in the nets at the back of the ground before moving to the centre-wicket pitches. He faced further throwdowns and the spin of Nathan Lyon before switching to the pace-bowling net where he took on team-mates Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, although they were not operating at top pace given the short turnaround between games.Related

Smith ready for the real stuff after passing baseball-cage test

McDonald asks for patience as spotlight remains on Konstas

It’s understood that Smith came through the batting stint without problems. After leaving the nets, he had lengthy conversations with backroom staff including McDonald, selector George Bailey, and physio Nick Jones with some close attention paid to the injured right little finger and the splint Smith needs to wear.”He seems pretty confident,” Alex Carey had said before training began. “He’s excited to get back in. It’s been tough at the top of the order, so to add a little bit more experience is good for the group.”Assuming Smith does play, he will need to be managed in the field. He took some gentle slip catches after finishing batting but won’t be able to take his usual place in the cordon. He occasionally felt his finger during the remainder of the fielding drills.

“Australia is still strong [without him] because of the system they have. They keep on producing guys. But we’ve seen when we add pressure as a bowling group, we did get 20 wickets in the Test and that’s the first step towards winning”Daren Sammy on Steven Smith

Australia are preparing their cordon on the assumption that Smith will play. Beau Webster remained at second during practice after fielding there in the first Test, and Sam Konstas, who was at short leg and in the outfield during the first Test, came into third. Starc also caught some balls in the gully where he may slot in should Cameron Green move to the slips at any stage. In the first Test, Usman Khawaja stood at first slip to Lyon. Significantly, Josh Inglis, who filled Smith’s spot at No. 4 in Barbados, did not practice in the slips.Smith averages an eye-watering 124.57 in Tests against West Indies, which includes an unbeaten 200 in Perth in 2022 and 199 at Sabina Park on the 2015 tour. The last Test he played against them he was opening the batting at Gabba where he was unbeaten on 91 when West Indies secured their famous victory.”He’s a quality guy, a quality player,” West Indies coach Daren Sammy said. “Australia is still strong [without him] because of the system they have. They keep on producing guys. But we’ve seen when we add pressure as a bowling group, we did get 20 wickets in the Test and that’s the first step towards winning. Steve Smith, if he comes in, poses a different challenge to us.”Steven Smith fell for 199 in last Test in the Caribbean in 2015•AFPSammy suggested West Indies may look to rejig their own slip cordon after spilling seven catches in the last Test, with Brandon King potentially moving to first, where he sometimes fields in white-ball cricket, and Roston Chase shifting to the gully although that is perhaps not an ideal position for a captain.”I think the biggest thing is we shot ourselves in the foot [in Barbados],” he said. “You cannot drop seven catches against the world’s No. 1 team and expect to compete. We have a lot of blame to take for the defeat, but there were also some positives… for the first two days, we were head and shoulders against the No. 1 team.”Signs two days out suggest that the pitch in Grenada would not be nearly as lively as one served up at Kensington Oval. It had an even covering of dry grass and was given another heavy rolling between the two training session.”We’ve played more white-ball cricket here,” Sammy said. “It’s normally a really good cricket wicket. [There’s a] much more even cover of dead grass. I trust in the groundsmen, with what they’re going to prepare. At the end of the day, you could have a grassy top or a flat deck, you have still got to be able to execute. That’s what our challenge is about.”

Jude Bellingham gives thoughtful response to Liverpool fans' hostile treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold after Real Madrid team-mate subjected to boos on Anfield return

Jude Bellingham has issued a thoughtful response to Liverpool fans booing Trent Alexander-Arnold. The former Reds star was back at Anfield on Tuesday with Real Madrid in the Champions League and received a hostile reception from home supporters on Merseyside. The full-back's decision to leave his boyhood club this summer and head to the Santiago Bernabeu enraged many fans, who made their feelings known.

    Liverpool fans boo Alexander-Arnold

The boos rang out around Anfield when former Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold entered the pitch at Anfield, replacing Arda Guler in the 82nd minute of Real's 1-0 defeat. This was the first time that the English full-back had played a game at Anfield since appearing for the Reds in their final game of the 2024-25 campaign against Crystal Palace.

Alexander-Arnold chose to leave at the end of his Liverpool contract, although Madrid ended up paying a €10 million (£8m/$11m) fee to release him early so he could feature for Los Blancos at the Club World Cup. Ahead of Tuesday's European clash, the Englishman was labelled a "rat" and his famous Liverpool mural was vandalised.

Bellingham's response to Alexander-Arnold getting booed

Alexander-Arnold's Madrid and England team-mate Bellingham addressed the hostile reception from the home crowd on : "Obviously, it is one of those things in football. The fans booing isn't a reflection of how they feel about him. I think it is more to give their team the edge and throw him off a little bit. I am sure they're appreciative of what he has done for the club. It is one of those things."

  • Bellingham makes history

The night turned out to be a disappointing one for Bellingham and Co as Alexis Mac Allister's 61st-minute strike sealed all three points for the hosts, but the English midfielder did make European history as he eclipsed Lionel Messi and Madrid colleague Kylian Mbappe. At just 22 years and 128 days old, the former Birmingham City prodigy smashed Los Blancos icon Iker Casillas’s long-standing record as the youngest player in history to reach 50 appearances in Europe’s elite club competition.

Since moving from Dortmund to Madrid in the summer of 2023, Bellingham has lived up to, and arguably exceeded, the astronomical expectations placed upon him. He marked his arrival at the Spanish capital with goals in his first four Champions League games, establishing himself as the heartbeat of a side that would win the competition under Carlo Ancelotti in the 2023-24 campaign. That early streak made him only the fourth Real Madrid player in the 21st century to score on both his La Liga and Champions League debuts, joining the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco, and Marco Asensio. Bellingham’s record-breaking spree doesn’t stop there.

Tough start in Madrid for Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold has endured a far tougher start to life in Madrid, however. The Liverpool academy graduate has only started three games for Xabi Alonso's side to date, and played second fiddle to Dani Carvajal at the start of the campaign. A hamstring problem also set Alexander-Arnold back, but he is set for a run in the team now as Carvajal has been sidelined until the new year with a serious knee injury. The 27-year-old will hope to start at right-back when Los Blancos take in a trip to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Kiké Hernández Gives Simple, Profane Reason This Year’s Dodgers Are Different

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 2-0 to advance to the NLCS for the first time since 2021.

Kike Hernandez started in center for the Dodgers, hit a home run, and then helped close out Game 5 with two nice plays at third base in the ninth inning to win the NLDS. Following the game a very happy Hernandez spoke with FOX's Ken Rosenthal.

Asked what makes this year's Dodgers team different than previous year's teams, Hernandez responded with a question, asking Rosenthal if they were live. When Rosenthal confirmed that they were live, Hernandez thought about it for a second and said, "The fact that we don't give a f—."

Then he smiled, knowing he had sworn on national television.

Here's Hernandez making the final out of the game.

And here's Teoscar Hernandez adding the insurance run that the Dodgers did not end up needing.
