Aston Villa owner sparks debate over Veretout future

Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has sparked a debate among fans regarding the future of Jordan Veretout.

The 24-year-old was shipped out on loan to St Etienne at the start of the campaign after he failed to impress in his first season at Villa Park.

While at the Ligue 1 club, the midfielder has made 26 top-flight appearances, scoring two goals and registering three assists.

On Sunday, Xia suggested on Twitter that Veretout has attracted interest from a handful of clubs and that the player may need convincing to remain at the Championship outfit.

Veretout signed for the Villans from Nantes in 2015 for a fee believed to be in the region of £7m.

He went on to make 25 appearances in the Premier League and nabbed five assists but failed to find the back of the net once.

With the summer transfer window just around the corner, Xia’s tweet has encouraged fans to give their thoughts.

Some believe that Veretout should be welcomed back, while others are ready to cut ties.

5 Euro 2016 Group B stars Chelsea must consider signing in the summer

With the season over, footballing eyes across the world have turned to Euro 2016, not least in England where manager Roy Hodgson announced his provisional 26 man squad for the tournament.

Hodgson’s list included a number of shock in-and-exclusions, most notably Andros Townsend and Marcus Rashford who came into the squad, as well as both Mark Noble and Jermain Defoe who were, unfortunately for them, omitted despite terrific individual campaigns.

The former Liverpool manager will have to cut three players from the 26 man squad before their Euro campaign begins against Russia on June 11th, as England hope to impress during the tournament following a fine qualification record.

England and Russia are joined by Wales and Slovakia in Group B, and Hodgson’s men are favourite to emerge as winners of the group.

As they always are, Premier League scouts will be having a field day (or summer) eyeing up Europe’s most talented players coming together, as the tournament provides a perfect opportunity for clubs to eye up their summer transfer targets.

Chelsea will almost certainly be one of those clubs on the lookout for summer recruits, with incoming boss Antonio Conte set to reinforce heavily at the Bridge following the club’s worst Premier League finish in two decades.

Conte himself will be at the tournament, as he spearheads Italy’s Euro campaign, but the Italian manager will without question have one eye on the goings on elsewhere in the tournament.

Could the former Juventus man find his new Chelsea men in Group B? Our landlord takes a look at FIVE players Conte could recruit from group B…..

Fabian Delph

A surprise inclusion in Roy Hodgson’s 26 man squad, Delph has been unlucky at Manchester City following his move last summer from Aston Villa, with a string of injuries having kept the talented midfielder out of the side.

The 26-year-old may now struggle for first team football with incoming boss Pep Guardiola set to bring a host of players with him to the Etihad, so Delph could jump ship in search of first team football.

Aaron Ramsey

Continually linked with a move away from the Emirates, Welshman Ramsey is set for another summer of speculation.

Despite not having the best season in North London, the 25-year-old is undeniably talented having attracted past interest from the likes of Barcelona.

A move to the Catalan club is unlikely, but a switch to West London is less so, as Chelsea and Conte are searching for a creative midfielder.

Ryan Bertrand

It would be audacious to say the least if Chelsea were to make a move for their former defender this summer.

Loaned out 9 times during his career at the Bridge, Bertrand has had an excellent season since his permanent move to Southampton last summer, and was unlucky not to make the PFA Team of the Year.

Once again Chelsea failed to recognise their young talent at the club and rued the mistake, as the Blues have cried out for a consistent left back this campaign.

Denis Cheryshev

Cheryshev is set for a move away from home club Real Madrid this summer following his loan spell with Valencia in the latter half of this campaign.

The Russian has impressed during his half season at the Mestalla Stadium, and was also instrumental for Villarreal during his loan spell last season where he scored 6 goals and provided 11 assists as The Yellow Submarine finished 6th in La Liga.

A transfer target of Liverpool, Chelsea could swoop in and steal the exciting winger’s signature.

Marek Hamsik

Hamsik goes about his business quietly at Napoli, but the Slovak – who has now made over 400 appearances for the club – has been the engine behind the Partenopei’s reinvention over the last half decade.

The Euro’s will provide Hamsik a chance to shine and the 28-year-old will certainly turn some heads.

'Let's go to the USA mummy!' – Incoming USWNT boss Emma Hayes reveals son's heart-warming 'endorsement' that helped her make 'hard' decision to leave Chelsea

Emma Hayes has revealed the heart-warming response from her son that helped her decide to take the United States women's national team job.

Hayes to leave Chelsea at end of seasonWill take charge of USWNT ahead of OlympicsReveals how son helped her make tough decisionWHAT HAPPENED?

Hayes will leave Chelsea at the end of the current season, bringing 12 incredible and illustrious years at the club to a close. She has helped turn the Blues into the dominant force in English women's football but is now set to take on a new challenge in international football, with the USWNT.

AdvertisementWHAT HAYES SAID

Speaking to about the decision to make the switch, Hayes recalled the moment she spoke to Harry, her five-year-old son, about the possibility of going to the United States. "I asked him, ‘Mummy’s got the chance to go and coach the USA team or we can stay here?’ and his reaction really helped me," she said. "I didn’t know what he was going to say, but he smiled, he hugged me, he kissed me and he said, ‘Let’s go to the USA, mummy, I’m really excited, I want to go to the USA!’ and I almost couldn’t believe it. That was it, that was the endorsement I needed."

Hayes was in a difficult moment at the time U.S. Soccer's interest became known as she had just lost her father. However, she praised the federation for its "support" and said that the role was "impossible to turn down" once they had spoken about how best to make it work.

"Truthfully, I was grieving, and I couldn’t think of anything else. I didn’t have any feeling at that point,” Hayes recalled. "So, I just felt like it was hard to make a life-changing decision, at a time that just didn’t feel right, so reaching that decision with almost a compromise to start at the end of this season was, I think, the only way I could have done it. I really can’t say enough good things about US Soccer and the way they’ve supported that decision and made me feel wanted. They’ve made me feel valued enough that they supported it. Once they agreed to all the things that really mattered to me, it was impossible to turn down."

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Hayes will certainly not be eased into the USWNT role as her first few weeks in the job will be focused on the upcoming Olympic women's football tournament, with the nation aiming to win a record-extending fifth gold medal. With four World Cup titles also to its name, the U.S. has been the biggest side in international women's soccer for a long time now.

"Without doubt, it is a major reason I accepted the job, to go to an Olympics, a World Cup, and be leading out the most established women’s football nation,” Hayes added. "When the time comes, I will give it absolutely everything I’ve got. I know what the Olympics means to America and I’ve been made aware of that from my time living out there."

Hayes has won 15 major honours in her time in charge of Chelsea. This season, the Blues are still alive in all four of the competitions they compete in, too, so could well add plenty to that total before the manager departs.

Wright pulls off amazing century heist

Sussex 188 for 7 (Wright 111*) beat Gloucestershire 185 for 4 (Klinger 61, Marshall 37) by 3 wickets
ScorecardLuke Wright once again starred on England’s T20 stage•Getty Images

Luke Wright smashed an amazing century to guide Sussex to an astonishing three-wicket NatWest T20 Blast win over Gloucestershire at Bristol as he once again underlined his status as one of domestic cricket’s finest T20 stars. With just two overs remaining, the visitors still required 43 to overtake Gloucestershire’s 185 for 4. But the 19th over, bowled – initially at least – by James Fuller saw the game turned on its head as 34 runs were added.Wright hit four sixes off it, the last after Fuller had been ordered out of the attack for two no-balled full tosses and Craig Miles was forced to bowl the final delivery. That left only nine needed from the final over, sent down by off-spinner Jack Taylor, and two more Wright boundaries sealed a sensational victory with a ball to spare.

Insights

Gloucestershire are proving to be a strong and well-rounded team this season and they should continue to challenge for a quarter-final place despite this defeat. However, they arguably lost this match, and may lose similar matches in the future, because they lack an international quality, standout player, be that with bat or ball, but especially ball. Of their starting XI, only Hamish Marshall and Geraint Jones have played international cricket, and neither have done so for almost a decade. The likes of James Fuller can’t be relied upon to close out matches.

Wright finished unbeaten on 111, having played virtually a lone hand with the bat for his side. He had cracked 7 fours and 8 sixes in facing just 56 deliveries.”I’m especially delighted being skipper this season,” Wright said. “When I took that role on I always thought the best way I could lead was with performances like that. I changed my bat for a bit of luck, they started to miss their lengths and I finally managed to get a few out of the middle.”With ten overs left I felt we had too much to do because they were bowling so well. But in the end the kept putting the ball in my area and it was a very special night for me. We chased down 220 in 19 overs in a remarkable game against Essex last year, but in terms of the game’s importance against a side close to us in the table, this was even more special.”Gloucestershire’s captain Michael Klinger said: “It was a crushing defeat for us in the circumstances, but all the credit must go to Luke Wright for a fantastic innings. James Fuller had a plan for bowling to him in the penultimate over and simply couldn’t execute it.”Earlier, Klinger had taken his NatWest T20 Blast run tally for the season to 518 in just seven innings as Gloucestershire posted what looked a winning score only for Klinger, outstanding all season, to be denied once again. After a delayed start until 6pm, the Australian shared an opening stand of 88 in 10.4 overs with Hamish Marshall (37) after winning the toss.Marshall, returning after a calf injury, lost nothing in comparison with his captain, scoring his runs off 27 balls, with 4 fours and a six, before being caught at mid-on attempting to pull a ball from Tymal Mills.Ian Cockbain, also enjoying an excellent run in the competition, then joined Klinger, who reached a 41-ball half-century, with 4 fours and a six.The pair added 42 in four overs, taking unusually heavy toll on Michael Yardy, whose three overs cost 41, before Klinger skied a catch to wicketkeeper Craig Cachopa attempting a big hit off Chris Liddle. Cockbain hit three sixes in moving to 30 off 16 balls. And after he was bowled off an inside edge by Mills, Benny Howell and Geraint Jones ensured Gloucestershire of a competitive total. The Sussex response got off to a poor start when Chris Nash, having hit the first ball of the innings for four, fell lbw to James Fuller two deliveries later. It was 13 for two when Matt Machan got a leading edge to Klinger at cover in Fuller’s next over and 51 for three when Craig Cachopa fell for 18, caught at long-off to give left-arm spinner Tom Smith his 17th wicket in South Group matches.Despite Wright’s best efforts, Sussex were only 67 for three at the halfway stage of their innings. And when George Bailey smacked a Benny Howell full toss straight to Marshall at deep mid-wicket their chance looked to have gone. When Smith struck again to have Harry Finch stumped the asking rate was already above 13 an over. Two Wright sixes saw 21 come off the 17th over from Kieran Noema-Barnett, but Taylor conceded only five off the next and Gloucestershire seemed as good as home. Wright had other ideas as a woeful over from Fuller changed the course of the match
