Tottenham dealt Bergwijn injury blow

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt yet another injury setback ahead of their Premier League clash with Watford on Saturday.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by football.london, manager Antonio Conte revealed that winger Steven Bergwijn missed out on Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Southampton on Tuesday afternoon as the 24-year-old forward was suffering from a calf strain picked up in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.

The 52-year-old went on to state that, as a result of this knock, the Netherlands international looks as if he will remain sidelined for the visit of Watford on Saturday afternoon, as the player will need more time to recover before returning to first-team football.

When asked whether Bergwijn was injured for the Saints game, Conte said: “Yeah, yeah. During the game against Crystal Palace, he felt a problem in his calf. Yeah, he was injured. Together with [Giovanni] Lo Celso and [Cristian] Romero and [Ryan] Sessegnon.”

The Italian was then asked whether the winger would be back for Watford, to which he replied: “I don’t think so. He has a muscular problem and he needs to recover more time than 10 days or only a week.”

Conte will be livid

As we are well and truly in the thick of the busiest period of the Premier League calendar, with Spurs having at least six fixtures to play between now and the end of January – with the potential of more being scheduled due to earlier postponements – the news that Bergwijn will be unable to feature against Watford is sure to come as a huge blow to Conte, as well as leaving the manager livid.

Indeed, with the 52-year-old recently revealing that he considers the forward as a backup to Harry Kane – currently Tottenham’s only recognised centre-forward – something that is evidenced by Bergwijn replacing the 28-year-old at Selhurst Park last week, the Dutchman’s injury severely limits the Italian’s options should he wish to give the England captain a rest in the club’s upcoming games.

Furthermore, with the likes of Lo Celso, Romero and Sessegnon already in the Tottenham Hotspur treatment room, a fresh injury is the last thing Conte needs heading into 2022, as the former Inter Milan manager will need as many of his first-team squad fit and firing as possible if he is to have any chance of guiding Spurs to a top-four finish in the league this season.

West Ham fans slam Diop vs Spurs

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans weren’t impressed with the defensive display of centre-half Issa Diop during their crunch London derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur this evening.

Aiming to keep their hopes of clinching the Carabao Cup alive after knocking out both Man United and Man City, David Moyes’ men travelled across the capital to Tottenham for their second meeting against the Lilywhites so far this season.

A hotly contested clash saw goals at both ends with both Moyes and new opposition boss Antonio Conte aiming to clinch silverware with their respective sides.

Tottenham took the lead twice in the first half through Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura with the Hammers briefly equalising in-between thanks to a very well taken individual goal by Jarrod Bowen.

Failing to find a breakthrough, West Ham eventually crashed out of the competition to their rivals.

West Ham fans slam Diop…

Amid an entertaining Quarter-Final tie, many West Ham fans saw fit to criticise the performance of Diop for his display – particularly for playing a big role in the conceded goals.

The Frenchman lunged for an interception in the build up to Spurs’ first, arguably leaving space for Bergwijn to tap home (Dan Silver), while he also failed to block the cross for Tottenham’s second goal through Lucas (Spurs Web).

He arguably wasn’t helped much by left-back Arthur Masuaku with many supporters believing their left-side was particularly exposed, taking aim at Diop and his fellow defender.

As per SofaScore, he also finished the night among West Ham’s lowest-rated players – leaving little wonder why West Ham fans weren’t impressed after a shaky evening.

Rangers: Balogun set to return to training

A major boost has emerged on Rangers centre-back Leon Balogun, regarding when he will return to fitness at Ibrox.

What’s the latest?

Gers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has delivered an update on the defender by revealing when he will be back in training for the club.

He told the Scottish Sun: “Leon went to Germany for a couple of days but is back now. So hopefully this week he will start training again.”

The Dutchman also provided a snippet on Filip Helander, adding: “I don’t think we’re going to see Filip before the winter break.”

Buzzing

This news will surely leave Rangers fans feeling buzzing as the head coach’s comments appear to suggest that Balogun will be back in contention before the break. The defender’s last appearance came in the 3-1 defeat to Hibernian in the semi-final of the League Cup in November and that means that he has not played a single match since van Bronckhorst’s arrival.

He was in fine form under Steven Gerrard’s management, averaging an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.05 in the Scottish Premiership across 11 matches. The centre-back has won 64% of his duels in the campaign so far, making an impressive 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game in the league.

Last season, he averaged a score of 7.13 as he won 61% of his duels and made 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game for Rangers. This shows that he has maintained a consistently high level, both in terms of his average performances and his defensive strength, since the start of the 2020/21 campaign. He has shown that he has the quality to be a top player in the Premiership, which is why fans will be delighted by his return to training this week.

It will also come as a major boost to van Bronckhorst as it arms him with another excellent player to call upon at the back. His displays over the past 18 months show how good he can be for the club and that is why his return will benefit the Dutch head coach, who could now afford to hand Calvin Bassey or Connor Goldson a rest at the heart of the defence.

The only piece of news that Gers fans may not be best pleased with is the 46-year-old’s update on Helander. He appears set to come back into the fold towards the end of January or later, which means that it could be a while before he is seen out on the pitch again.

AND in other news, 9 duels won: “dominant” £6.75m-rated Rangers beast who made 3 tackles was GvB’s hero…

Expert fires warning over Ryan Jack injury

Rangers have to be careful that Ryan Jack’s current injury absence doesn’t become a long-term issue, according to expert Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Jack sidelined by injury

Jack has been an excellent performer for the Gers since joining from Aberdeen in 2017, scoring 11 goals in 133 appearances.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed that the midfielder will be absent until after the winter break, however, having not started a league game since February. Injuries are unfortunately a massive talking point with the talented midfielder, as some fans were even ready to give up on him after this latest blow.

The hope is that Jack will be back on the pitch as soon as possible but a warning has been fired to the Scottish Premiership champions from Dinnery, who runs PremierInjuries.com.

The Latest: Expert fires warning

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery claimed it would be reckless to rush Jack back after such a long absence, risking him being out until near the spring:

“Rangers need to be careful with Ryan Jack. It doesn’t matter how much work you do behind the scenes, you can’t replicate the cut and thrust of playing for the first team competitively.

“Players suffering soft tissue problems are particularly susceptible in the first 28 days when they are reintroduced to the rigours of competitive football.

“So this doesn’t come as any great surprise. It’s very, very frustrating for the player, but it’s just the way it is. You need to manage them so carefully. A setback that can keep you out for two weeks could easily turn into eight.

“So you always have to err on the side of caution when it comes to muscle problems.”

The Verdict: Too important risk

Jack has suffered a hugely frustrating period in his career in 2021, and while there is a need to get him back on the pitch regularly, any rushed thinking now could be a disaster.

The 29-year-old must only return when he is fully fit, hopefully enjoying the same influence he did before his setback earlier in the year, with Steven Gerrard hailing him as ‘fantastic’.

Jack has enjoyed a 90.7% pass completion rate in his rare time on the pitch in the league this season, which bodes well, but another major setback in his recovery as he approaches his thirties could be the end of his time as a consistent option for the Light Blues.

Injured Younis not shirking tough games

If Younis Khan and his team fail tomorrow, he will front up and explain why they did. If there is success, he will turn up much the same. But turn up he will

Osman Samiuddin in Centurion25-Sep-2009

Younis Khan: “Why not come out and do something like Sachin did in 2003, something for my country which they will remember me for ages”•Getty Images

Running away holds a significant place in Younis Khan’s scheme of things. It is a recurrent theme in his conversation, shirking from challenge, responsibility and difficulty. He has spent his career and life mired in these matters, in making his way into and out of and then back in, in refusing the vice-captaincy in 2002, in refusing the captaincy in 2007 and finally in taking it.There is a school of informed thought in Pakistan that believes when Younis turned down the captaincy after the last World Cup – effectively that he ran away, if you like – he did so because he wanted to take over when things had become even worse and some kind of savior was needed. It is self-indulgent, righteous and hubristic even, the belief that onlyyou can resolve what is a mess and right all wrongs. Democrats will also tut-tut. But the stance is also to be admired, for, potentially, you set yourself up for big falls, bigger than even the rewards. And to go into it knowing that, it is something few men take on.In a recent interview with Cricinfo, talking about taking up the captaincy time Younis said, “I am going to go into this storm, go right to the edge and see how long I can stand there.” To him that is the fun. It is a curious, contrary outlook to have and as he is a true Pathan, we can safely say he is no different from many of his kind. The balls here are untampered.Precisely these things determine his place in the side tomorrow. A finger on his right – and bottom – hand is fractured and the doctors told him he needed four weeks rest. Yesterday morning, a full two days before the India game, barely a week after the injury, the PCB – presumably with Younis’s consent, more likely on his directives – announced he will play against India. Bravado indeed.Given the opponent, it is likely he would’ve turned up had he lost a limb but nothing is ever to be assumed in Pakistan cricket; few people have forgotten just who didn’t turn up for the 1996 World Cup quarter-final against India. “I am playing tomorrow. I was told four weeks rest but I want to take my chance tomorrow, playing against India. Maybe if it wasn’t India I would’ve skipped this match. It’s very easy for me to run away, I have a fracture and I can leave it, not play against India and Australia. But these are big games. If you don’t perform in a big tournament you have to face consequences and it is very easy for me to run away here.”He is a chancer, for he believes that having tried something and failed is much more preferable than not having tried it at all. Not playing tomorrow is worse than playing and failing. And playing and succeeding is the glory of all glories. It is a choice that might dictate the inclusion or otherwise of Mohammad Asif, for example, and it is in these delicate balances of choice and decision that Younis is found.”I am looking at the big picture, who knows I may perform tomorrow and that performance will be remembered because I played with a broken finger. If I score a hundred and become Man of the Match and win the match – that is the big picture. Not playing is no advantage at all. This is manageable, maybe with an injection tomorrow, but I might play in pain tomorrow.”We’re all used to playing in pain, and the motivation has to be there to get up and play for the country. I am not 100%, it will hamper my fielding and if I get hit I will be in pain but the big picture is, why not come out and do something like Sachin did in 2003, something for my country which they will remember me for ages.”He is a fascinating study; a strikingly honest man, hyper, stubborn, proud, sometimes vindictive and much worldlier than many of his team-mates. Currently, he is one of the few really good men in Pakistan cricket’s setup. If he and his team fail tomorrow, he will front up and explain why they did. If there is success, he will turn up much the same. But turn up he will.

Luan será o desfalque do lado mineiro.

AVFC: Fans react to Carney Chukwuemeka update

Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka will not sign a new contract at Villa Park, according to The Guardian.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Chukwuemeka, described as a player who ‘can do everything in midfield’, was handed his first Premier League start earlier this season in a 0-0 draw with Brentford.

However, the 18-year-old hasn’t featured in the top flight since, with his current deal in the Midlands set to expire in 18 months’ time.

According to The Guardian, Chukwuemeka has decided that his future doesn’t lie with Villa and therefore won’t be penning fresh terms under Steven Gerrard.

The report adds that has put the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United on alert over a potential future move.

Celtic had a nightmare in Christie sale

After joining Celtic for a figure in the region of £500k back in the summer of 2015, expectations for Ryan Christie’s future at Parkhead were extremely high.

It is easy to see why, as, after breaking into the Inverness Caledonian Thistle first team in the club’s 2013/14 Scottish Premiership campaign, scoring three goals over 15 league outings, the attacking midfielder went on to cement a starting spot in John Hughes’ side the following season, bagging four goals and registering three assists over 35 appearances in the top flight of Scottish football.

And, while still being just 20 years of age upon the time of his move to the then Scottish champions, Christie continued his rather remarkable rise away from Glasgow, during three separate loan spells.

The first of these was back at Inverness, where the Scotland international scored three goals and provided six assists over 13 Premiership fixtures, while the second two loans both came at Aberdeen, with the midfielder bagging 15 goals and registering 18 assists over 57 appearances in all competitions during his two years at Pittodrie.

Upon his return to Celtic, not only was Christe a more developed and well-rounded player, but he was also a more valuable one, with the youngster’s Tranfsmarket value rocketing from £225k at the time of his initial move to Celtic to £630k after his three temporary spells away from the club.

This is a trend that would continue at Parkhead, with the £12k-per-week man scoring 11 goals and registering nine assists over 38 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys in 2018/19. His value then jumped to £3.38m in the summer of 2019 – bagging a whopping 20 goals and providing 16 assists over 45 fixtures in 2019/20. He once again witnessed his value rise in 2020 to £5.85m – and after scoring seven goals and registering 15 assists over 46 appearances in all competitions in 2020/21 his estimations increased to £6.3m at the end of last season.

However, despite these extraordinary returns and his ever-rising value, Celtic somehow allowed the player who Alex McLeish dubbed a “magnificent” talent to enter the final year of his contract at Parkhead without having agreed an extension – something which ultimately led to the Bhoys cashing in on the midfielder for a mere £2.5m this summer.

As such, considering the sheer amount of potential Christie demonstrated during his time in Glasgow, in addition to the fact that the Hoops sold the 26-year-old for a figure £3.8m less than his current Transfermarkt value of £6.3m, it is not a difficult argument to make that the Bhoys had something of a nightmare in the sale of the midfielder.
