Crystal Palace fans hail Gallagher call-up

A number of Crystal Palace supporters have been expressing their delight after Conor Gallagher was called up to England’s senior squad for the first time.

The 21-year-old joined Palace on loan from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, with Thomas Tuchel unable to guarantee him regular playing time at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher has enjoyed a superb start to the season for the Eagles, immediately becoming a key player under Patrick Vieira and bringing quality and energy to midfield.

The youngster has scored four goals and registered two assists in the Premier League and his efforts have now been rewarded at international level, while a recent piece in The Telegraph described him as one of the most vibrant talents in the country right now.

On Sunday, it was confirmed via Palace’s official Twitter channel that Gallagher has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup qualifier against San Marino on Monday.

Newcastle: Dutch journalist fears Ajax raid

Marc Overmars could bring Ajax manager Erik ten Hag and some of his star players to Newcastle United if he takes over as sporting director, Dutch journalist Hugo Borst fears.

The lowdown

According to Borst, talks have taken place between Overmars and Newcastle, who are looking to bring in a sporting director to work in tandem with a new manager.

One possible snag is the Dutchman’s contract, which still has two years to run. That would oblige the Magpies to pay a compensation fee.

They do have other targets in mind, and Luis Campos, formerly of AS Monaco and LOSC Lille, is both out of work and keen on the job (via The Chronicle).

The latest

Writing his ed.nl column, Borst expressed grave concern about the repercussions for Ajax if Newcastle manage to lure Overmars away.

He also namechecked a couple of the on-field talents who could potentially follow him, in addition to manager Ten Hag.

“Imagine Marc becoming technical director of that upcoming football superpower,” he wrote.

“Then of course he brings in Erik ten Hag. And [Ryan] Gravenberch. And [Jurrien] Timber, of course.

“Then Ajax has to start all over again.”

19-year-old defensive midfielder Gravenberch is valued at £29.7million by Transfermarkt, while versatile 20-year-old defender Timber is rated at £15.3million.

Notably, both players feature on the shortlist for the 2021 Golden Boy award.

The verdict

This would be a dream scenario for Newcastle fans. Overmars boasts an outstanding track record, Ten Hag has led Ajax to a Champions League semifinal and two Dutch titles, and they have a raft of Europe’s best talent on their books.

Ten Hag says it would take an ‘exceptional’ and ‘extraordinary’ offer for him to leave Ajax, but the opportunity to team up with Overmars at one of the world’s richest clubs might fit the bill.

In other news, another Dutch journalist had a message for Ten Hag.

Leeds United battling Arsenal for Noa Lang

Leeds United are plotting a January bid for Club Brugge winger Noa Lang but are set to face competition from Arsenal for his signature.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent months had suggested that the 22-year-old was a major target for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealing that the Whites really like him as a player.

Once the Premier League season had started, it was claimed by Football Insider that Leeds remain interested in Lang and have had scouts keeping tabs on his performances over the course of this campaign ahead of a potential move.

Dutch publication Voetbal24 have now suggested (via Sport Witness) that the likes of Leeds, Arsenal and AC Milan want to sign Lang, with a very good chance an offer will come in during the January transfer window.

Dribbles more than Raphinha

After a stellar 2020/21 season with Brugge – the 22-year-old netted an impressive 17 times across all competitions – it’s no surprise that Leeds are keen on finally getting their man in January.

Dubbed a “phenomenon” by Belgian sports journalist Peter Vandenbempt, Lang made history when he became the first player in 60 years to mark his debut with a hat-trick for Ajax, prompting Erik ten Hag to wax lyrical about him.

The Amsterdam club’s manager said: “He showed (his talent) today and I am very happy with that. Noa shows (his ability) it during training and during the reserve matches. And today he has also clearly shown it at the highest level too.”

Leeds fans have already seen the impact that an exciting new winger can have on the club after Raphinha’s signing last year, but when you compare the Brazilian’s stats to Lang’s this season, it’s the latter who fares better.

The Brugge star has seven goal contributions compared to Raphinha’s two, while he has also averaged three times as many dribbles as the Leeds man – a real indication of the directness with which he plays and the end product he already seems to have.

Leeds fans will surely be excited at potentially signing him in January.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has delivered an update on this former key figure at Elland Road…

Prince and Kallis tons punish Australia

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out
Ashwell Prince’s 11th Test century paved the way for South Africa …•Getty Images

Another day with plenty for the home crowd to cheer. After being outplayed in the first two Tests South Africa continued to boss Australia in Cape Town thanks to an imperious century from Ashwell Prince in his first international outing in over four months and a captain’s innings from Jacques Kallis.Prince, a mainstay of the South African middle order over the last couple seasons before he was sidelined by injury, was their leader for the most of the day. He led the charge with his second-highest Test score, a marathon innings that finally came to a close in controversial manner during the final session. Taking a cue from the man he replaced as stand-in captain, Kallis weighed in with his 31st Test century. He may not have figured in South Africa’s plans when the series began, but Prince slotted in to the unfamiliar opening role with a stylish, collected ton. He continued where he left off yesterday, in confident, authoritative fashion, to stride to his second-highest Test score. He did the hard work last evening and this morning, seeing off the new ball, and forged stands of 65 with Imraan Khan, 97 with Hashim Amla, and 150 with Kallis. Prince and Amla joined after an acrobatic reflex catch from Peter Siddle sent back Imraan and immediately found each other compatible. With scores of 47, 53, 30*, 51, 59, 57 and 43 to go with two failures in his last five Tests – all against Australia – Amla brought to the crease a degree of confidence and responded to Prince’s solidity with a typically punchy innings.Prince’s only blemish came in the same over Amla edged a leaden-footed drive off Mitchell Johnson – another aborted half-century against Australia – when he flashed an edge over the slip cordon. Passing 3000 Test runs along the way, Prince ticked through the seventies and eighties without throwing his weight around, but the legspinner Bryce McGain was given a warm welcome on his introduction an hour into the session. With a three-card trick of boundaries, Prince moved from 93 to 105. The first was a touch risky as the ball sliced off the bat and raced away to the third-man boundary, but the next two were dismissive – a twinkle-toed hit over mid-off and a dismissive sweep in front of square. With the series lost South Africa had not just proverbial pride to play for but also needed to sort out a reliable opening alternative to the injured Graeme Smith. In compiling an assured, unfussy 11th Test century, his second against Australia, Prince has shown that he has the necessary quality.Kallis’ start had been unlike Prince’s. He was given the once-over by Johnson, copping nasty short deliveries on the shoulder and helmet that prompted an assortment of replacement helmets. At one stage 4 from 39 balls and struggling to find a run, Kallis channelled his ire on McGain…. and Jacques Kallis’ 31st hundred rounded off a dominant day for the home side•AFP

In five balls he jumped to 18 with three disdainful shots, the biggest of the lot being a pull over midwicket for six. McGain’s trash was littered to all part of Newlands, his penchant for half-trackers and juicy full tosses fodder for Kallis – that five-over spell cost 51. When Ricky Ponting tossed the ball to McGain after tea, Kallis welcomed him back with a six and four. To rub it in Prince clipped a six off his pads in an over that cost 18. A rare maiden was followed by a 13-run over. McGain took his cap and skulked out to the deep, having haemorrhaged 93 in ten disastrous overs; debuts don’t come crueller.Prince was cut off on 150 after six minutes of largely inconclusive replays. Australia felt he had gloved a Ben Hilfenhaus delivery down the leg side but Steve Bucknor sided with Prince. Hot Spot didn’t show an impact on the glove but the third umpire Billy Bowden advised Bucknor to rule it out.Kallis then duly marched to his century – though there was some confusion as to when he actually reached the landmark. Kallis stole an inside-edged single and broke into exuberant celebrations only to look back at Asad Rauf, who signalled leg-byes. Rauf and Bowden conferred and the decision was overturned. It didn’t go down well with Ponting, who had words with Rauf as the electronic scoreboard rolled back Kallis’ score to 99. When it finally went back to the correct figure, the crowd erupted louder than the first time.Australia’s attack, apart from the enthusiastic Siddle, bowling at a lively pace and not offering anything, was the weakest it has been all series. In the lead-up to this Test there was talk of how Johnson had found the inswinger and was even more dangerous against right-handers. However, he had no impact on Amla, who clipped and drove him with ease, or Kallis, who left alone without fuss. There was no swing for Hilfenhaus, Andrew McDonald was steady without ever threatening, and the last over before stumps summed up the day – McGain was called on and AB de Villiers, without a second thought, danced down and deposited him over the ropes.

Aston Villa: Fans react to injury update

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith provided a positive injury update ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea in his pre-match press conference.

Windass drops huge Ronaldo claim before MUFC debut

Former Premier League star Dean Windass insists that Cristiano Ronaldo will play as a number nine at Manchester United.

The Portugal international has returned to the club from Juventus in one of the most sensational transfers of the summer window.

He has yet to make his debut, of course, because of his international commitments with Portugal, and he could make his second debut against Newcastle United.

Ronaldo has a formidable scoring record, of course, after his spells at United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.

During his first spell in Manchester, the attacker scored 118 goals in 292 games, before netting an astonishing 450 goals in 438 games at Real. At Juve, Ronaldo scored 101 times in 134 games, while he has also netted 111 times in 180 caps for Portugal.

And Windass believes he will be instructed to get into the penalty area as often as possible under United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Windass said: “He’ll be a number nine. He can get himself in the box, you don’t have to do the tracking back as much, because the Premier League is different to foreign football, where you have to track back in a 4-3-3, then it becomes a 4-5-1.

“I’d play him down the middle, get goals in the box, he can come short, he can go long, save your energy going the other way instead of tracking back in the wide areas.

“If he has to play in the wide areas he’ll do that but I’m 100% certain that he will play down the middle.”

Arsenal can sign a new Fabregas in Aouar

Arsenal could sign their new Cesc Fabregas in Lyon star Houssem Aouar amid Fabrizio Romano’s exciting transfer claim.

What’s the story?

Reports last summer suggested that Mikel Arteta’s side were very much interested in signing the France under-21 international, but a deal failed to materialise before the end of the transfer window.

Romano has now delivered an update on where things stand with Aouar and Arsenal with just a couple of weeks remaining in the summer window.

He said (via Football.London): “It is a complicated situation on agent’s side because as they say from France, it’s true that there is some situation from agent’s side, and that’s why I would keep an eye on Aouar till the last day of the window because now still some rumours we have with Tottenham and with Arsenal.

“These two clubs are really interested in Aouar. Fabio Paratici wanted him one year ago when he was at Juventus. He had to make a decision between Aouar and Chiesa, they decided to go for Federico Chiesa.”

Arsenal’s new Fabregas

The £26m-rated Aouar, who has been lauded as an “exceptional talent” and “special” in the past, has the kind of midfield characteristics which make him very similar to a certain Fabregas.

In the 2019/2020 campaign, the Frenchman bagged nine goals and provided another ten assists, setting up a couple of goals in the Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester City.

That level of goal-scoring and creativity is what Fabregas brought to the table in his heyday, with the Spaniard scoring 15 goals and providing another 15 assists in the Premier League alone during the 2009/10 season at the Emirates Stadium.

When you look at their underlying stats over their careers, they are remarkably similar. As per WhoScored, Aouar averages 1.8 shots per game to Fabregas’ 1.4, provides 1.2 key passes to the Spaniard’s 2.1, and is fouled 1.4 times per match compared to the former Arsenal man’s 1.1.

Just like Fabregas, the 23-year-old has also had experience of being a captain at a young age, having already worn the armband for Lyon on numerous occasions over the years.

While Martin Odegaard may have arrived from Real Madrid to fill that creative berth at the Emirates, Aouar could bring an added dose of creativity and goal threat from midfield too.

Meanwhile, Arsenal could sign their new Sol Campbell in this ace…

Pundit says West Ham could still sign another striker

Evening Standard journalist Jack Rosser has reiterated the possibility of West Ham signing a striker before the window closes.

Michail Antonio has made a fine start to the new Premier League season by scoring three goals in his opening two games, including a clinical brace against Leicester City on Monday night.

However, Antonio, who has a history of muscle injuries, remains David Moyes’ only senior frontman, which is a risky move heading into a season with European football for the Hammers.

West Ham were very keen on signing Tammy Abraham, but weren’t willing to meet Chelsea’s asking-price, which allowed Roma to pounce and sign the young striker.

Victory against Crystal Palace this afternoon could see Moyes’ side head into the first international break sitting top of the Premier League, which would mark an outstanding achievement for a side that were battling relegation some 14 months ago.

But the striker situation has left a black cloud hanging over the club, although Rosser told Football FanCast that he remains optimistic:

“They would like to get a striker in before the end of the window. Not based on any information, but I always have a sneaky suspicion that they might just pull something out late.

“But Moyes thinks he can use Bowen or Benrahma through the middle.”
