Foot injury to keep Lee out for a month

Brett Lee’s troublesome left foot has prevented him from trying to justify his importance to Australia’s team on the third day in Melbourne

Australia will almost certainly enter the series finale in Sydney next week with a vastly inexperienced attack after learning Brett Lee faces a month out of the game due to a foot injury. Lee has been out of form and was unable to improve his series figures of 1 for 200 when the problem kept him off the ground for the entire third day against South Africa at the MCG.Lee has what the team physio Alex Kountouris described as a stress reaction – “on the way to being a stress fracture” – in the fourth metatarsal in his left foot. While there is a chance Lee could bowl in the second innings, it could take as little as one ball to turn the small crack into a stress fracture and a four- to six-week layoff is probably required either way.”I don’t think he’ll be able to play the Sydney Test,” Kountouris said. “We’ll wait and reassess at the end of the game but if he’s got what we think he’s got and it’s been confirmed by scans that he’s got a stress fracture, it’ll probably mean we’re going to have to rest him for a period of time to let it settle. We’ll probably get a specialist opinion but it will be something between four and six weeks I think.”That would rule Lee out of Australia’s ODIs against South Africa and New Zealand and would mean a potential return in the Test series in South Africa that begins in late February.Kountouris said the injury was caused by overuse and was not uncommon in fast bowlers. Lee has also had problems with his left ankle and has had four operations on the joint, the most recent of which kept him out of last year’s World Cup.Lee’s lack of penetration has been a concern against South Africa and he leaked 68 runs from 13 overs as the pain increased throughout the second day at the MCG. Losing him for the Sydney Test would take the heat off the selectors to justify his inclusion but it would also leave Mitchell Johnson in charge of a young attack. Michael Clarke, the vice-captain, said a lack of Test experience in the bowling group would not be a major worry.”I think I look at it the other way,” Clarke said. “I remember when I got my opportunity to play Test cricket, it’s a great feeling and you really look forward to that day and I think whoever – if somebody does come in for Brett Lee – I know they’ll be looking forward to that opportunity and hopefully they can get hold of it with both hands.”Peter Siddle and Nathan Hauritz are each in their third Test and the candidates to replace Lee include the uncapped Ben Hilfenhaus, who joined the squad after the WACA loss. The Sydney local Doug Bollinger will also come into the equation, as will Shane Watson, who filled in as 12th man while Lee rested in Melbourne.

West Ham linked with Odsonne Edouard

West Ham United have joined the race for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard as Irons manager David Moyes looks to bolster his depleted forward line.

What’s the story?

According to Eurosport, the Hammers are interested in signing the highly-rated 23-year-old this summer, although they’re set to face fierce competition for his signature.

Fellow Premier League clubs Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace have also been credited with an interest in Edouard in recent weeks, so Moyes may have to move quickly to secure his transfer target.

West Ham fans will be buzzing

Since arriving at Celtic Park back in August 2017, the £15.3m-rated gem has established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards, bagging 85 goals and providing 39 assists in 176 appearances for the Hoops.

The former France under-21 international’s standout displays have earned numerous plaudits, with former Celtic manager Neil Lennon labelling him “magnificent” after a match-winning performance.

However, with just under a year remaining on his current contract with the Glasgow giants, Edouard is desperate for a new challenge, and Eurosport claimed that he is ‘keen to prove’ he can score regularly in the Premier League.

They added that, due to his contract situation, Celtic will sell the striker ‘if an acceptable formal offer arrives’, so a move to the London Stadium could be on the cards.

News of Edouard’s potential arrival in east London will surely have West Ham supporters buzzing with excitement.

The arrival of Europa League football is set to be a serious strain on Moyes’ already stretched squad, and the addition of a supremely talented marksman who has fired Celtic to nine major trophies throughout his time at the Glasgow club would be warmly welcomed.

Michail Antonio is the only recognised striker in the Irons’ squad following Sebastien Haller’s move to Ajax back in January, so a belated alternative is high up on Moyes’ wish list for the current window.

It’s been a quiet summer so far for West Ham, but snatching Edouard away from under the noses of their domestic rivals would certainly make it a far more successful transfer window.

Australia still sweating on Clark's fitness

Stuart Clark will be desperately aiming to prove his fitness in the next couple of days as he aims to avoid becoming the third Australian squad member sent home due to injury

Stuart Clark will be desperately aiming to prove his fitness in the next couple of days as he aims to avoid becoming the third Australian squad member sent home due to injury. Clark missed the second Test in Mohali due to an elbow problem and with four days until the third match in Delhi, he knows he must soon demonstrate he is over the niggle.”I’m confident of getting through,” Clark told the . “But if I don’t I think I’ll be going home.”From their starting squad Australia have already farewelled Bryce McGain, who has had shoulder surgery, and Phil Jaques, who has had an operation on his back. The loss of Clark would be an enormous blow for an attack lacking experience but Tim Nielsen, the coach, said it was important not to play Clark unless he was 100% fit.”The real test will be not only when he comes back and not only bowls flat out, but he bowls two spells or he fronts up two days in a row and sees how it has recovered,” Nielsen told . “These little niggly injuries that need some help are always a bit of concern because you have to give them time to rest.”Peter Siddle made his Test debut when Clark was deemed unfit for Mohali and the group has one more backup fast man, Doug Bollinger. Should Clark be sent home the selectors might be tempted to fly in Shaun Tait, whose express speed has been causing domestic batsmen trouble in the past couple of weeks, although Queensland’s Ashley Noffke would be a less risky alternative.

Aaron Boupendza: West Ham’s next Antonio?

West Ham could find another Michail Antonio if David Moyes reignites interest in one of his striker targets this summer…

What’s the word?

Back in March, 90min listed the Irons among the teams monitoring Hatayspor striker Aaron Boupendza ahead of a potential move, and now they have learned how much it’ll cost to prise the 24-year-old away.

According to honorary president Lutfu Savas to Turkish outlet Sabah, they will only let the versatile Gabonese frontman leave for €8m (£6.8m).

The Hammers are likely to face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, where Boupendza’s fellow countryman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is captain, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Southampton, to name just a few.

Shades of Antonio?

Moyes has had Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham atop his shortlist for most of the summer but any move for him seems to be dead in the water after ExWHUemployee revealed that he had no intention of joining the East London outfit.

It leaves the 58-year-old in a sticky situation as he’s heading into the new season with only one senior striker in Antonio, so something needs to happen soon.

Perhaps he should look to reignite his interest in Boupendza, especially as there are plenty of similarities to be had with the 31-year-old forward.

The 16-cap Gabon international found the net a whopping 22 times during the 2020/21 campaign, which was the most in the Turkish top-flight.

He did so playing both centrally and out on the wing, In fact, 24 of his 38 appearances came on the left flank, whilst he was deployed through the middle on eight occasions.

Before the intervention of Moyes, Antonio began life as a right winger but has emerged as a prolific marksman ever since that transformation. Last season, he finished the campaign as the Hammers’ top scorer on ten goals.

Boupendza has similar abilities, having been described as a very strong dribbler and finisher by WhoScored, which is backed up by his average of 3.1 shots and 2.6 dribbles per league outing last season.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old gem has been lauded as a “very good footballer” and a “goal machine” by Hatayspor president Nihat Tazearslan.

The 5 foot 11 dynamo has even been likened to Kylian Mbappe and considering his nickname is the “panther”, it suggests that he has explosive speed which could devastate defences in the Premier League.

Evidently, Boupendza has an eye for goal and he could well be worth a chance for just £6.8m, especially considering Moyes’ coaching – something we’ve seen first-hand with Antonio.

GSB should look to get him in following the recent Abraham setback.

As concerns grow over whether or not the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, some believe Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf should convince other nations

As concerns grow over whether or not the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, there is a feeling Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf should convince nations such as Australia and England not to give the event a miss if it is staged here.Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi are scheduled to host the tournament inSeptember but growing fears over the turbulence have led to some players expressing unease about playing here. The boards of Australia, England and New Zealand are awaiting the assessment of a team of security experts that was in Pakistan during the just-concluded Asia Cup before they make a final decision. Sri Lanka is the official alternative venue should the tournament be moved away.Aamer Sohail, former Test opener and captain, believes Musharraf, who is also patron of the PCB, should be more proactive. “It is the president’s duty to speak to individual countries and convince them to come over and play in Pakistan,” Sohail told Cricinfo.”What is happening in the country is basically the result of Pakistanleading this war against terror,” Sohail said. “We are paying for fighting it. Countries such as Australia and England are our allies in this war on terror, yet they are not supporting us here. Are we real allies or are we just being used?”Earlier in the year, Australia pulled out of a full tour to the countrydue to security fears but the successful, untroubled hosting of theAsia Cup in Lahore and Karachi was supposed to have eased the way for the Champions Trophy. A spate of bombings since, however, have once again cast doubt over the tournament, the ICC saying that they too were awaiting a report from their security consultants before taking a final decision on the venue. A bomb in Islamabad on the night of the final – in Karachi – killed ten people, while Karachi experienced seven low-intensity blasts the very next day.”If the tournament isn’t held here because of these reasons,” Sohail said, “it will be a really sad day for Pakistan cricket. It is an unfair price for us to pay. This tournament is a real test of our role in this war: after eight years in the front-line, is this our reward – that we miss out on hosting this tournament? The onus is on the president to convince countries that it is safe to play in Pakistan and that sport has never been targeted here. The ICC and PCB are going the whole hog in ensuring it happens here but the president can really help with his involvement.”A board official also backed the idea, further arguing that the country’s foreign office should play a role. “The ICC and PCB will try their level best to make sure it happens in Pakistan, but it is upto individual governments to ensure their teams come. And the president’s input here can really help.”Musharraf attended the Asia Cup final between India and Sri Lanka, where he spoke at the post-match ceremony about the need for cricket to go on despite the bombings. “But the fight against terrorism must go on and life must continue. We have to fight terrorism together,” he said. “Such healthy competitions are important and necessary for Pakistan and in this region. I congratulate the Pakistan board and the Asian Cricket Council for organising this event successfully.”

Liverpool fans fume at Naby Keita claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy after Neil Jones’ claim that Naby Keita could sign a new Reds contract this summer.

The Guinean has endured a hugely frustrating Liverpool career to date, having arrived with such big expectations on his shoulders in 2018.

While Keita has still produced good performances at times, playing a part in the Reds’ success, there is no denying that he has been underwhelming overall.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

Incredibly, Keita has still only made 76 appearances for Liverpool, with injury problems and patchy form both holding him back too often.

Despite this, Jones has claimed on The Kopite Podcast [via Anfield Edition] that he thinks the 26-year-old “will sign a new contract at Liverpool”, extending his stay at Anfield in the process.

Liverpool fans unhappy at Keita claim

It isn’t a rumour that has gone down too well with these Reds fans on Twitter, however, with some questioning whether or not it makes sense, and one supporter going so far as to call the news ‘awful’ and ‘rewarding failure’.

Rangers reject £10m Morelos bid

An update has emerged on Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos, regarding Porto’s attempts to sign him…

What’s the talk?

According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Rangers have turned down a £10m (€12m) offer from Portuguese giants Porto for forward Alfredo Morelos. The Gers have rejected Porto’s opening salvo and are said to be in no rush to cash in on him.

Konor adds that Porto are not the only team interested in signing Morelos, although he has not dropped any specific names in terms of other clubs.

Disaster

Steven Gerrard must avoid a disaster for Rangers with Morelos this summer. The ex-Liverpool man cannot afford to be bullied into selling the attacker for less than he is worth to the club and rejecting this first bid from Porto is a promising first step in the transfer window.

Morelos has been a prolific scorer since joining the Scottish giants and has proven his worth over a number of seasons. The Colombian international has scored an impressive 94 goals, and provided 43 assists, in 182 competitive appearances for the club.

If a club has the finances to come in and blow Rangers away with a very attractive bid, then Ross Wilson and Gerrard will need to hold their hands up and realise that that money could go a long way to improving the squad. They could spend it on several additions and round out the overall strength of the squad to make up for the departure of Morelos.

The £33k-per-week dynamo leaving would be a blow to Gerrard’s squad and that is why they need to hold out for as much money as possible. Not only does he have a fantastic goalscoring record, but his peers are also full of praise for him. Speaking anonymously to The Athletic in 2019, a Scottish Premiership player labelled Morelos as “non-stop” and praised the way his movement made him difficult to defend: “In my experience, he is just non-stop.

“There’s never a time when he’s walking about or not interested in the game. He’s always involved, whether that’s taking you away or dragging you closer to the ball.

“He’s kind of dropping deep now and going out wide. That’s a nightmare for defenders because he’s your player that you’re meant to be man-marking but then you’re dragged out of position and you’ve got midfield runners taking his space. That means you need to start talking to your full-backs and centre-mids to start swapping players, which makes it a lot more difficult.”

Rangers have done well to reject Porto’s opening offer, they must stick to their guns and only allow Morelos to leave if a club makes a significantly larger offer. Selling a proven goalscorer on the cheap would be a disastrous move for the Gers.
