Crystal Palace fans react as Malachi Boateng signs his first professional contract

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after academy prospect Malachi Boateng signed his first professional contract.

The 17-year-old – younger brother of Hiram Boateng, a former academy player turned first-team appearance maker at Selhurst Park – has featured four times for the Under-23 side so far this season, scoring once with a well-taken strike against Hull City.

Under-23 coach Richard Shaw recently spoke glowingly of Boateng to The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam, saying: “I know for a fact Mal will make it. 100 per cent, because he’s cut from the same cloth as his brother.”

The defender enjoyed a brilliant 2018/19 campaign with the Under-18 side, where his performances earned him the Under-18 Player of the Season award before he was promoted to the Under-23 ranks.

One fan said that the news was “great”, before calling on the south London-based side to now tie academy left-back Tyrick Mitchell down to fresh terms.

Another supporter went slightly off topic and asked if Boateng was a striker, so he could replace Christian Benteke.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Aston Villa fans hail Marvelous Nakamba after Premier League debut

[ad_pod ]

A number of Aston Villa fans loved what they saw from midfielder Marvelous Nakamba in Monday’s Premier League clash with West Ham United.

The 25-year-old impressed on his first-team debut against Crewe Alexandra towards the end of last month but has had to wait for his first Premier League outing.

Nakamba was named in the starting XI against the Hammers, though, and played 81 minutes of the goalless draw at Villa Park.

According to WhoScored, the summer arrival from Club Brugge had a pass success rate of 81% while he won five tackles before being replaced in the latter stages.

Villa could not make use of their one-man advantage to grab a winner in the latter stages, although it was another step in the right direction for the promoted club.

Liverpool’s Naby Keita injury return is unknown but could work out in club’s favour

[ad_pod ]

Jurgen Klopp has recently assured Liverpool fans that Naby Keita is nearing a return from injury, but an exact date he could be back in action is still unknown.

What’s the latest?

The Guinea international has endured a succession of injuries since suffering from an adductor issue he picked up in May when playing against Barcelona in the Champions League.

He was since ruled out of the African Cup of Nations as a result of a groin injury and although he made a return in the Community Shield he aggravated his injury further when training ahead of the Super Cup, from which he is still yet to recover.

In response Liverpool have, according to The Liverpool Echo, placed the midfielder on a bespoke training schedule during the international break in an attempt to accelerate his recovery, and the time spent at the training ground over the break will at least allow the club’s physios to keep a careful watch on his progress.

Important not to rush back

The 24-year-old has been unable to make the impact he would have hoped for so far in his Liverpool career, making only 16 Premier League starts in 2018/19.

As a result, even if fit he would be unlikely to replace one of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson or Georginio Wijnaldum in the team, and therefore Jurgen Klopp shouldn’t be desperate to get him back too quickly, although he would be a useful option to have.

Moreover, Liverpool have started well and have other players to come in ahead of him if need be, and the longer he spends out of the squad now, the more energy he will have throughout the rest of the season – which could prove very valuable later in the year.

The medical team must take care to ensure he is full fit when giving him the green light. He has already aggravated injuries before and if it happens again it could hinder Klopp’s men at a later stage in the campaign.

West Ham fans react as Michail Antonio picks up injury problem

[ad_pod ]

Michail Antonio is seemingly facing a period on the sidelines with the attacker picking up what looked to be a hamstring injury in the early stages of West Ham United’s EFL Cup clash with Newport County on Tuesday night.

Indeed, Antonio pulled up in the early stages of the contest whilst breaking into a dangerous position, which led to Felipe Anderson being introduced.

The 29-year-old had impressed many of the West Ham fans with his performance off the bench in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Watford in the Premier League.

And it would be fair to say that a number of the club’s supporters were upset by the attacker’s enforced withdrawal in the eighth minute.

It remains to be seen how long the Englishman spends on the sidelines, but his injury has not gone down well with a number of the London club’s fans, who watched their side progress to the third round.

Leeds’ Pontus Jansson sale now looks even stranger following Adam Webster update

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Selling Pontus Jansson was sure to raise eyebrows around the Championship.

Indeed, his sale has left Leeds fans concerned with their defence after pre-season, having conceded four times against Manchester United a few weeks ago.

Jansson will leave behind a huge void. He was one of the influential figures in this Leeds team, starting 37 times in the Championship last term so to see him depart wasn’t particularly positive news.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were the third-best defensively last season and that has been put in doubt following his exit. But it’s the transfer fee that now looks considerably questionable, that’s if it didn’t already.

According to Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites agreed a £5.5m deal for the defender’s services as he joined Championship rivals Brentford.

That amount of money feels standard for a side playing in the second division but it’s Brighton’s reported £20m move for Adam Webster that shows how poorly the Yorkshire club have dealt with things.

Earlier this week it was reported that the central defender could move from Bristol City to the Seagulls having previously quoted potential suitors £30m in order to land him.

Webster was a colossal presence at the back for the Robins, winning 6.4 aerial duels per match and at the age of 24, appears to be moving for a mighty price considering he’s never played in the Premier League.

But that transfer is evidence of how poorly Leeds did with Jansson. After all, he was a player who was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year last season.

Webster, however big his influence, wasn’t named in it, which further makes the two fees rather baffling.

Despite financial fair play, Leeds were under no real pressure to sell for the fee they claimed.

The centre-back only signed a five-year deal in 2017, meaning he was just two years into it before moving on.

With that in mind, a much higher fee should have been demanded for his services, even if attitude problems were cited for his departure.

The transfer window has been a real cause for concern for Leeds. They haven’t replaced Jansson, nor have they brought in another striker despite their lack of options.

However, the fact Webster is now set to move for £20m when they received £14.5m less for their own player further rubs salt into the wounds for the Whites.

Crystal Palace should avoid Mounie as he doesn’t fit their style of play

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace are one of a number of clubs who have enquired about signing Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie.

What’s the deal, then?

The 24-year-old joined the Premier League from Montpellier in 2017 as the Terriers’ £12million record signing, but his statistics do not resemble what you would hope to receive from your most expensive player ever.

The forward registered 11 goals and five assists in 63 appearances for the club, however it was not enough to keep them from the drop last season as he contributed just two goals in 32 games in 2018/19.

Now, TEAMtalk have said there is interest from France and Germany for the attacker, but that there is also a number of English clubs after him.

As well as Palace, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Watford are all said to be in for the Benin international, who is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Moving from Huddersfield to Palace would be a big shift

When looking at the potential move Mounie would make from Huddersfield to Palace, one statistic which sticks out more than any other is where the two sat last season when it came to the number of long balls per game.

Now, Mounie scored four of his nine league goals for Huddersfield from headers, indicating his threat in the air is a big part of his game – backed up by the fact he won 6.8 aerial duels per Premier League appearance.

That stat means he is a lot more similar to Christian Benteke – who won 5.6 per game – than former loanee Michy Batshuayi, who only averaged 1.1.

Huddersfield had the fourth-highest number of long balls per game in the 2018/19 campaign, compared with Palace who were down in 16th.

In addition, Palace had the fewest crosses per game in the whole division compared with Huddersfield who, again, had the fourth-highest.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

It is therefore clear to see that Palace’s game is far more suited to having a fluid forward who can link up with Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend, rather than a physical presence who waits for balls into the box.

Mounie is used to a totally different style of play at Huddersfield, which is why Palace should steer well clear.

Performance in Numbers: Targett would give Aston Villa more than Taylor going forward

[ad_pod ]

Matt Targett is seemingly wanted by a number of Premier League clubs at the moment as both Liverpool and Arsenal are eyeing the talented young full-back.

However, also in the market for the player are Aston Villa who could make a £10m swoop for the left-back.

Targett is an understated footballer, one who appears to go quietly about his business without really setting the world on fire from a defensive or attacking point of view.

Having made just 13 starts for Southampton last term, you’d be forgiven for thinking he was a player with a lack of ability.

But that wouldn’t be a fair reflection of a footballer who actually offers his team a great deal at both ends of the pitch.

For a host of reasons, he’d be a great signing for Villa. He’d put to bed some of the problems they’ve had at left-back and he’d provide them with another attacking outlet down the left-hand side.

If he does sign for the Midlands outfit, his partnership with Anwar El Ghazi down that flank could be game-changing for the side.

The one player he’d likely oust from the team is Neil Taylor, an individual who had a rather indifferent campaign in 2018/19.

Assessing the stats, Targett would be a far better option, particular in an attacking sense where he is streets ahead of the Welshman.

Although somewhat struggling when it comes to end product, it wasn’t for a lack of trying. He racked up 1.4 key passes per game whilst making the same number of crosses on average per 90 minutes.

If you compare that to Taylor, there is a huge difference. The 30-year-old made just 0.6 key passes and a measly 0.3 crosses per match.

In terms of their defensive contributions, Targett made the same number of tackles per outing as Taylor, but he made considerably more interceptions, demonstrating his intelligent reading of the game.

Across the 16 times he played in total in the Premier League, he made on average 1.7 interceptions across each match. The man he’d rival if he arrived at Villa Park only completed 0.5.

The difference between the two is stark and it’s only in terms of his pass success where Targett is worse off.

Certainly on statistical evidence, the 23-year-old is a player Villa should be doing everything they can to sign.

West Ham fans react as Arnautovic linked with summer departure

[ad_pod ]

West Ham fans have been left delighted over the news that Marko Arnautovic could leave the club for Inter Milan this summer, per The Sun.

New boss Antonio Conte is said to be willing to bid £30m for the Austria international, who spent a season on loan at the club between 2009 and 2010.

Arnautovic has a £45million release clause in his contract but the report claims that the club could be tempted to do business at a lower price as they look to reshape their squad under Manuel Pellegrini.

Football FanCast understands that both Aleksandar Mitrovic and Salomon Rondon, of Fulham and West Brom respectively, are targets this summer.

And fans have been left delighted by the prospect of the move.

Arnautovic almost left the club in January to move to China and a number of fans believe that he should finally walk through the exit door at the London Stadium.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

If the post is any indication, he seemed to be working with his nutritionist Scott Robinson at Porsche despite the Premier League being all wrapped up weeks ago and the new season still being quite far away.

Deeney and his Watford have had a more than just a decent year. They finished 11th and just seven points short of the place that would take them into Europe.

This 30-year-old was once again a key piece of the puzzle, scoring nine times and assisting a further five in his 32 appearances in the 2018/19 Premier League campaign. He also netted twice in the FA Cup before the team crashed out of the competition.
