Bevan-led Blues end the seven year itch

If it’s a characteristic of great players to unfurl great deeds at great times, then Michael Bevan gave a pretty powerful demonstration today of where he stands in thecontemporary one-day arena

John Polack25-Feb-2001If it’s a characteristic of great players to unfurl great deeds at great times, then Michael Bevan gave a pretty powerful demonstration today of where he stands in thecontemporary one-day arena. Arguably the world’s finest limited-overs player, he produced a display more than worthy of the tag as he guided New South Wales toan upset six wicket victory over Western Australia with ten deliveries to spare in the 2000-01 Mercantile Mutual Cup Final here in Perth.Having booked its ticket to this match on the back of snatching several close victories from the jaws of defeat, Western Australia might have been expected to do itagain in a tight finish at the WACA Ground. But, at the time when it really mattered most, it was the Blues who held their nerve the best. Piloted to the line brilliantly bya first-ever domestic one-day century from the mercurial Bevan (135*), they deservedly won their state a sixth domestic one-day title and a first for seven years in theprocess. On a day laced with tension, controversy and emotion, Bevan fashioned the defining innings – a wonderfully composed mixture of outright aggression, solid defenceand skilled placement of the ball – to prove again that he has few peers in the one-day arena. Responding to the Warriors’ tally of 7/272 on a relatively benign pitch, his team was at 1/14 and in potential peril when he walked to the crease in mid-afternoon. But by the time, three hours later, that he struck the winning boundary, jubilantly raised his fists skyward, and then strode purposefully from the arena, the home side’s dreams of back-to-back titles – and of creating the perfect send-off forretiring champion, Tom Moody – had thoroughly evaporated.”It was really an opportunity for me to go out there and take a bit of a chance and take the bowlers on,” said Bevan after his innings.”I was really happy with the way I hit it and to get those runs in a Final is always nice.””I (generally) just try and focus on what I have to do. I didn’t feel too much pressure today. I just wanted to go out there and try my best and see what happenedreally,” he added in an apparent masterpiece of understatement.”There was a period there where (the required run rate) went up to about eight an over. And it was a case of having to take a little bit of a chance. But the wicket’s sonice and the outfield’s so fast (at the WACA) that you don’t really have to take that much of a chance here, which helps you as a batsman when you’re chasing a total.”In honesty, the Western Australian bowling and fielding was not at its sharpest. The match might have ended in a much different result, in fact, if the Warriors’ paceattack had not continually overpitched or strayed on to the line of the left hander’s pads. The outcome might also have diverged from its ultimate course if BrendonJulian, at mid on, had not grassed a regulation catch as Bevan (with his score on just 59) mistimed a drive at the medium pace of Moody (0/29 from five overs). But to overplay that assessment would also, unfairly, take much away from Bevan. The way in which he assumed the advantage and punished his opponents for theirmistakes provided an instructive lesson about his prowess. Fourteen fours and a powerful on driven six flowed from his bat in a glorious exhibition of shotmaking.Moody was aggressive in his intent against the left hander early, placing as many as four fieldsmen in a tight catching cordon behind point and stationing only one of his players forward of the bat on the leg side. But the policyfailed to draw any genuine mistakes and the vital wicket was not forthcoming. Indeed, it never came.In short, the international star was in his element, capitalising savagely on anything loose and continuing to work even frugal deliveries away for singles. With youngsterMichael Clarke (57), who overcame consistent cramping in his right leg to craft a skilled innings of his own at the other end, Bevan added an invaluable 126 runs forthe second wicket. Their liaison began to take the match out of the Warriors’ hands; then, two others which followed decisively affirmed the trend. After two strikes from Duncan Spencer (2/57 from seven overs) in the one over threatened to undo all the good work, another sixty-one runs then flowed in Bevan’salliance with Mark Higgs (29). All Graeme Rummans (30*) had to do by this stage was turn the strike over to his partner – a feat he performed with aplomb – andanother sixty-nine were duly added in the unbroken fifth wicket stand that officially ended the contest.”I’m very satisfied; it was a great win. It was always going to be a tough chase, chasing 270 in a Final. But full credit to Michael Bevan; it was a superb innings,”enthused a delighted New South Wales captain, Shane Lee, shortly after the win.”It’s always nice to win in Perth. We always have a tough game against the Western Australians, both here and in Sydney. So I think it’s extra special to win (theone-day title) here at the WACA.””We’ve got a very well balanced side. We were confident though we knew we had to play well. I always felt that, if one player got a big score, we were a goodchance of getting the runs. There’s a lot of talent there.”Earlier, it had been Mike Hussey (84*), Moody (78) and Murray Goodwin (38) who had helped to lift Western Australia into its very competitive position. In the warm conditions, the opening fifty overs actually provided a strange, see-sawing start to the match. The visitors threatened to take control initially with two earlystrikes; Moody and Goodwin’s 103-run stand for the third wicket pushed the advantage back to Western Australia; a brace of quick wickets fell upon theirseparation; and then Hussey profited from a Rummans dropped catch at 25 to smash the attack into submission over the closing stages.Just to add to the action-filled picture, there were moments of high drama and controversy too. The most stark of these came in the twenty-first over when ShawnBradstreet slid and attempted to save a Moody boundary on the deep mid wicket rope. Subsequent replays showed that the attempt was unsuccessful. But this wasnot before a brilliant Bradstreet throw found the stumps at the non-striker’s end with Moody still short of his ground. This prompted an amazing few minutes as UmpireDarrell Hair first gave Moody out before appearing to have his decision challenged by a furious Western Australian captain and then ultimately reversing it with thehelp of third umpire, Randolph Woolridge. Both captains later conceded that they were puzzled by the incident, agreeing that it was unusual. Bradstreet also endured a hostile reception from the crowd of 9310 every time he ventured anywhere near the ball for the remainder of the match. But, by the end of the day, there wasn’t too much room for dispute. The Final produced clear winners, both collectively and individually. Australia’s so-called premier state, and the nation’s premier one-day batsman, were simply toogood.

Manchester United liked to Nuno Mendes

Manchester United are reportedly in the running to sign Sporting Lisbon sensation Nuno Mendes after a string of impressive displays from the youngster.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, United have already ‘made contact’ with the Portuguese champions over a move for the 18-year-old full-back ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The report states that a £52m fee is being muted and that Mendes shares the same agent as Bruno Fernandes, who left Sporting for Old Trafford 18 months ago.

Woodward must move

Mendes has taken the Primeira Liga by storm this season, making 29 league appearances for the capital club as Ruben Amorim’s men ended a 19-year wait for the top-flight title.

He could become the latest name to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils revolution after Manchester City cooled their interest after Verde e Brancos named their price for the Portugal international.

While some may argue that the 20-time English champions are well-stocked at left-back with Luke Shaw and Alex Telles, signing a generational talent like Mendes is simply an opportunity United can’t afford to pass up on.

Shaw has been magnificent this season and is undoubtedly the short-term solution to Solskjaer’s left-back needs, but at just 18, Mendes could grow and develop for a couple of years under the Norwegian’s tutelage while getting enough game time in cup competitions to continue his on-pitch development.

Summer-signing Telles has struggled to adapt to life in the English top-flight so far and could still be sold for a relatively high price, given his contract has three years left to run.

It would leave United with the perfect scenario. Their first-choice full-back would be an established Premier League player entering his prime years with over 200 senior appearances to his name, and his understudy would be a teenage prodigy admired by the continent’s top clubs.

Former Portugal international Costinha spoke to Goal after Mendes was named on the 2021 NXGN list of the world’s top teenage talent, and gave a glowing reference of his compatriot.

“Nuno Mendes (is the top talent). I don’t think he will be here next season,” claimed the retired midfielder.

“If I was a scout for the big clubs in Europe, I would look at him. Eighteen years old, a left-back – and there aren’t many left-backs in the world with that quality – then I would definitely go and pick him.

“He is strong physically and in his head. He has an excellent left foot, and he has very good pace.”

Therefore, Ed Woodward must seal a deal for the £22.5m-rated gem before he steps down from his position on the United board this summer, and leave the Premier League giants with at least one positive note.

And, in other news…Major Manchester United transfer update emerges that’ll surely have fans buzzing – opinion

Jesus could now be tempted to join Spurs

According to a report by the Sun, the promise of first team football ‘could be enough’ to convince Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus to make the switch to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Lowdown: Spurs and Jesus…

Recently, Spurs have been touted with interest in the Brazilian as part of a possible swap deal for star striker Harry Kane – who is now believed to want out of north London this summer (Sky Sports).

The coronavirus pandemic ensures that clubs do not have mounds of money to spend when it comes to blockbuster transfers and part-exchange deals may be seen as a good alternative.

Reports suggest chairman Daniel Levy could demand up to £200 million for Kane with City apparently interested in using makeweights to bring his asking price down.

The Latest: Jesus could be convinced by Tottenham move

Sharing the latest on Tottenham and Jesus, the Sun believe that the 24-year-old joining Spurs as part of a Kane swap deal is far more likely than Raheem Sterling, who is now being touted with another potential switch to Arsenal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed Jesus’ £90,000-per-week wages won’t be a problem for the Lilywhites, even if they are increased, and the promise of first team football could convince him to join Spurs this summer.

He bagged nine goals and four assists in 22 Premier League starts for the Premier League champions over 2020/2021 (WhoScored), and despite the departure of club legend Sergio Aguero, Jesus is still not seen as the man to lead City’s forward line.

The Verdict: Do it Levy…

Lauded as an ‘incredible fighter’ by his manager, Pep Guardiola, Jesus is revered at the Sky Blues for his work off the ball and other aspects of his game than goalscoring acumen – including a tireless work rate (mancity.com).

He is prolific at finding the net too, however, having scored 103 career goals in total across his spells at both City and Palmeiras.

Valued at around £54 million by Transfermarkt, Levy could feasibly bypass a fee entirely if he was included in a swap deal for Kane.

The Englishman would undoubtedly be a huge loss for the club, but Jesus is arguably a capable alternative if plenty of cash comes Spurs’ way as part of the deal as well.

Celtic can find Christie heir in Afsha

Whoever the new manager is at Celtic next season they will not have things easy.

With a number of their best players linked with the exit door, a colossal rebuilding job will be required for the Bhoys at Parkhead.

On the chalkboard

One name linked with a fresh start is Ryan Christie. The Scot attracted interest from English Premier League teams during the winter and now his departure feels inevitable.

His contract expires in January 2022 and recent reports indicate that he could command a seven-figure fee in the summer.

Christie’s exit won’t come as a great loss to the Hoops. He may have racked up 20 goals last term but this season has been a disaster from the attacker’s perspective.

He has only found the net on seven occasions and has managed to beat the goalkeeper just once in his last 20 outings in the Premiership.

Much-maligned by various sectors of the Celtic fan base, it would come of great relief to many to see him finally walk through the door for pastures new.

Who is his replacement?

Celtic could turn to a number of players in the transfer window but one individual linked with an arrival is Egypt international Mohamed Afsha.

The 25-year-old is a rising star of Egyptian football and starred for Al-Ahly on their way to winning the African Champions League this campaign.

A diminutive figure at 5 foot 7, Afsha lacks plenty to his physical game but his technical abilities more than make up for that.

A creative force, he has provided eight assists this team, six of which have come from only 15 league matches. Afsha also knows where the back of the net is, scoring 12 goals during the course of his career with Al-Ahly.

Like Christie, the midfielder is capable of playing on the flanks but it’s through the middle where he can really make an impact.

Speaking about Afsha back in January, his former manager Ante Cacic said: “The best player in Egypt for me is Mohamed Magdy Afsha.”

Cacic added: “I watched his goal and watched the Champions League final. He’s a great player who had a great influence on the match and linked well between the lines. He is a wonderful player and has a great influence on Al Ahly’s performances.”

Although his goal scoring nature will turn heads at Parkhead, it’s his ability to link play that should be most encouraging.

After all, Christie hasn’t been productive in that department this term. He has scored only one goal from 51 attempts outside the box, taking a shot on rather than looking for a key pass.

Afsha has his own tendencies to go for goal but as his record and Cacic’s words dictate, he is creative too.

Dominic McKay would be making a shrewd acquisition here.

AND in other news, Dominic McKay is already on the verge of his first major Celtic mistake…

West Ham ‘could easily’ sign Sima

West Ham United could make their third signing from Slavia Prague in the space of 18 months.

According to a report from insiders Claret & Hugh, Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal ‘could easily be joined’ by striker Abdallah Sima this summer.

19-year-old Sima has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season. Four of those goals came during Slavia’s run to the last eight of the Europa League, in which he scored at the King Power as they stunned Leicester at the end of February.

‘Clubs notice’ talents like Sima

Premier League legend Petr Cech claims ‘there aren’t many players like’ Sima in Europe.

“When a player appears who, at such a young age, succeeds in senior football, starts scoring goals and produces in Europe, clubs notice,” he said, speaking to iSport.

The Senegalese international is valued at £9.9million by Transfermarkt, and Manchester United are also said to be monitoring him.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It’s clear that West Ham are looking to repeat the trick here – Soucek and Coufal have both been revelations since they moved to the London Stadium.

The former made his move permanent in the summer for a fee of £15million and he’s impressively netted 12 goals from defensive midfield in 49 appearances for the club (via Transfermarkt).

Coufal joined at the end of the window for just £4.5million and the right-back has been almost an ever-present, playing 90 minutes in all but one match, and has contributed five assists (via Transfermarkt).

Breaking The Lines’ James Lloyd wrote that the right-back could be considered ‘the bargain of the summer’.

The Irons may just have hit on a hugely effective recruitment strategy.

In other news, West Ham have made an enquiry for this ‘keeper.

Celtic: Arsenal and Leicester battling for Edouard

Arsenal and Leicester City are battling it out to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard this summer.

According to The Telegraph, cited by the Daily Mail, the Gunners are rivalling the Foxes for the 23-year-old’s signature.

Celtic planning to insert Edouard sell-on clause

Edouard will be entering the final 12 months of his Hoops deal in the summer. Celtic previously wanted around £40m for the Frenchman, however, the latest report claims he could be allowed to leave for just £15m.

The Hoops are planning to insert a sizeable sell-on clause in any deal for Edouard this summer, with Celtic themselves having to hand over 40% of any transfer involving Edouard to Paris Saint-Germain.

Transfer Tavern take

To us, Celtic inserting a sizeable sell-on clause in a transfer this summer is the only move to make.

They’ll know first hand through PSG’s huge Edouard percentage of how lucrative they can be, so it makes sense to capitalise on that knowing the forward wants to leave and clearly has lofty ambitions.

Should a £15m deal go through, the Hoops would have to hand £6m to the French giants, meaning they could make a whopping £31m less than the £40m originally mooted.

However, by inserting a sell-on clause of their own, they could end up making that back down the line, or perhaps even more if Edouard excels in the Premier League.

Howey backs NUST’s fundraising attempt

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 270 appearances during his career, has backed the Newcastle United Supporters trust who are trying to raise enough money to buy a 1% stake in the club, once Mike Ashley leaves.

The trust believes they will require about £3 million to have enough money to purchase a 1% ownership in the club, once new owners come in.

The initiative has already more than £50,000 and is being backed by people such as Alan Shearer, Rob Lee and George Caulkin, who is an ambassador for the move, and considering his strong links to Amanda Staveley that appears a smart move.

Speaking on why there’s nothing wrong with fans trying to own some of their club and what should happen to the money if they aren’t successful, Howey told FFC:

“I think there’s nothing wrong with actually trying to do it but obviously you’ve got fans that will be thinking ‘what’s the point’ and that it’s a waste of time.

“If you can raise enough funds for it then it’ll be absolutely brilliant but if the new owners don’t want the money that’s been raised then surely it can go to different charities around Newcastle.”

Mike Ashley thought he had eventually sold the club almost 12 months ago when he accepted a big from PCP Capital Partners, only for the Premier League to block the deal.

The Magpies currently sit six points above the relegation zone with just seven games remaining which will keep Ashley’s valuation of the club intact.

Kean doesn’t want to stay at Everton

Moise Kean has ‘no intention’ of returning to Everton after his loan spell at Paris Saint Germain ends, according to Tuttosport (via Sport Witness).

As per the news outlet, the Italy international is the ‘hottest name’ at his former club Juventus as they are looking to strengthen their forward line in the summer transfer window.

Kean would also ‘gladly return’ to the Old Lady, even if they do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the 2021/22 term.

Andrea Pirlo’s team could also offer Merih Demiral and Adrien Rabiot in exchange for the 21-year-old, with the latter a player that Carlo Ancelotti is a big admirer of.

Everton could benefit from Kean sale

The Goodison Park faithful could well turn the potential sale of Kean in their favour, and use the money that they would receive to invest in another striker.

He is currently valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, and may demand a tasty fee given his form for PSG so this season.

There is no doubt that Kean can be a great player on his day, with former PSG striker Pauleta was describing him as ‘very talented’ back in February, but it did not really work out at the Merseyside club, and so the Toffees should look to gain the benefit of a potentially large sum of money from his sale.

Leeds set for transfer misery over Romain Faivre

Leeds are facing the prospect of missing out on rumoured transfer target Romain Faivre amid claims that he has received an offer from elsewhere.

What’s the story?

French publication L’Equipe recently claimed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been monitoring the £7.2m-rated ace for several months now, but they face a battle to land his signature in the summer transfer window.

France Football have now revealed (via Sport Witness) that Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have put forward a contract offer for the Stade Brestois ace, and that he stands to make big money by accepting it.

However, the report added that, despite having “received nothing concrete from England for now’, it’s “the football land that makes him dream the most”.

Orta making a mistake

With five goals and four assists in the league this season, the 22-year-old has been a shining light for a team languishing just above the relegation places in 16th.

Olivier Dall’Oglio, Faivre’s manager at Brest, has waxed lyrical about his performances, saying: “He’s a boy with real potential. He’s comfortable on the ball, and fast in possession, he’s got great vision too. He’s got something special. He rarely loses the ball, he can break through the lines by dribbling, and his passing creates so many chances for us. He’s a boy who can provide passes, but who’s also capable of scoring goals.”

By not looking to wrap up a deal for Faivre quickly, Victor Orta has allowed other clubs to step in ahead of Leeds and potentially gazump them in the race to sign the winger.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Latest Leeds transfer rumours and news”]

With it being suggested that the Whites have been following him for several months now, for Orta to miss out on Faivre because he was sat twiddling his thumbs rather than taking action would surely leave Bielsa fuming.

It would be an unforgivable mistake from the Leeds hierarchy to let Faivre slip through their hands after doing their due diligence on him for such a long time. Orta simply has to step into gear, and fast.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign an ideal partner for Kalvin Phillips in this star…

Robinson urges Gelhardt to prove his worth

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that youngster Joe Gelhardt can prove his worth in the next few months.

The Whites have enjoyed a successful first season back in the Premier League, sitting 11th in the table with nine matches remaining. There is no threat of relegation for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who have been a breath of fresh air in the top flight, with very few of their games proving to be dull.

In Gelhardt, Leeds having a hugely promising young talent who is pushing to make his first team debut for the club, having joined from Wigan Athletic last August.

Robinson tips Gelhardt to feature

Someone who thinks this is now a great chance for the 18-year-old to shine is Robinson, with the ex-England ‘keeper telling MOT Leeds News that this is Gelhardt’s opportunity to show Bielsa he can be trusted moving forward:

“It just shows how far he’s come in the last 12 months and what the manager thinks of him.

“I don’t think he’s going to start games if Patrick Bamford is fit but this is his big opportunity for the manager to take a look at him in the Premier League.

“He might influence Bielsa’s transfer activity in the summer. This is his opportunity to prove that he doesn’t need to sign another striker in the summer.

“Bielsa has hinted that he’ll get minutes so he obviously thinks very highly of him.

“This is his opportunity to show what he can do. Leeds are definitely safe already, they’ve got more than enough points and it gives Bielsa the opportunity to take a look at his talented youngsters.”

Transfer tavern take

Bielsa will no doubt be eyeing up reinforcements this summer, but if Gelhardt impresses in the remaining games of the season, it may turn his manager’s head.

The teenager is an attacking player with seemingly huge potential and, having frequently been on the bench for the first team in recent weeks, it will be exciting to see him handed an opportunity between now and May if he gets his opportunity.
