Celtic: Boli Bolingoli unlikely to get another chance

Celtic left-back Boli Bolingoli is unlikely to be given another chance by Ange Postecoglou, according to The Daily Record’s Mark Pirie.

The Lowdown: Left-back woes

Postecoglou has had his issues at left-back in recent weeks. Greg Taylor had to undergo shoulder surgery and Josip Juranovic then went off with a knock against Dundee United after switching over to left-back.

Bolingoli was selected in a 1-0 defeat to Livingston last month but hasn’t been seen since, and it doesn’t look as if he’ll be getting the call from Postecoglou anytime soon.

The Latest: Pirie’s claim

Pirie, Sports Writer for the Record, shared a story on Tuesday morning, focusing on news regarding Celtic-linked free agent Robbie Brady.

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock played down rumours linking the Irishman with a move to the Riverside Stadium.

At the end of the report, Pirie looked at the Hoops’ left-back ranks, and when it came to Bolingoli, claimed it is ‘unlikely’ he’ll be handed another chance under Postecoglou.

The Verdict: January exit needed…

With Bolingoli seemingly not in Postecoglou’s plans, it is vital the Hoops move him on in the New Year.

It wouldn’t make sense to keep the 26-year-old at Parkhead on a £780,000-a-year salary if he isn’t going to be used.

Freeing up his wages could perhaps then allow Postecoglou to bring in reinforcements, so a loan or permanent exit should be explored.

England switched Ashes venues on purpose – Ponting

Ricky Ponting believes the Ashes schedule was changed deliberately to avoid England hosting the first game at Lord’s

Cricinfo staff23-May-2009Ricky Ponting believes the Ashes schedule was changed deliberately to avoid England hosting the opening game at Lord’s, a ground they haven’t beaten Australia at in 75 years. The contest will start instead at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff from July 8, the first time a five-day fixture has been held in Wales.”Last time we played the first Test of the series at Lord’s, and we felt comfortable with that because we almost knew we were going to get off to a good start,” Ponting said in the Sun-Herald. “There are places you turn up where players know that Australian teams have had success before, and it makes you feel a bit more comfortable playing there.”There was a fair bit of talk about it last time, starting the Ashes at Lord’s, given our record. This time around, it will be the second Test match, and I’ve got no doubt they changed it on purpose.”Australia have not lost a game at Lord’s since 1934 and it was the ground where they had their only success in 2005. Despite a 239-run victory in the opening match, they went on to lose 2-1 and end their 16-year hold on the urn. In 34 Tests at the home of cricket they have won 15 and lost five.”There’s all these big boards up around the rooms, and you want to get your name on those boards at Lord’s,” Ponting said. “That’s one thing that I’ll be certainly looking to do because I haven’t done very well there. I’ve made a one-day hundred there, but not done so well in Tests.”

Celtic: Robbie Brady update emerges

Celtic are reportedly the front runners to sign free agent Robbie Brady, according to The Glasgow Times, cited by Burnley Express.

The Lowdown: Brady still without a club

Brady has been linked with a move to Celtic Park twice this year. The first came back in February when Neil Lennon was still in charge and the second was after his departure from Burnley was confirmed.

The Irishman was thought to be attracting interest from Turkish side Gaziantep, while Swansea City manager Russell Martin labelled Brady as ‘brilliant’ but appeared to rule out a move.

He’s still without a club, and it seems as if Celtic Park could well be his next destination.

The Latest: Brady latest

Burnley Express shared multiple rumours in a Sunday story, one of which was on Brady.

They relayed reports from The Glasgow Times, claiming Celtic are thought to be lading the way for the 29-year-old’s services after Swansea ended their interest.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-13/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Time to swoop?

Even though it’s been fairly hectic off the field at Parkhead recently with Dominic McKay’s exit, now could be the time for Celtic to make their move.

Ange Postecoglou directly addressed rumours to Brady last month, so you’d think he’d have a good idea of where he could possibly fit in.

He has plenty of experience at the top level and can play on the wing or as a left-back, which could be handy for the Hoops as the season progresses.

England make 600 after Bopara hundred

If England’s cricketers thought they had batted with intent on the first day at Bridgetown, their efforts were nothing compared to the free-flowing onslaught they produced on the second

If England’s cricketers thought they had batted with intent on the first day at Bridgetown, their efforts were nothing compared to the free-flowing onslaught they produced on the second. Ravi Bopara led the way with a classy 104 from 143 balls, his first century in international cricket, and Paul Collingwood (96) and Tim Ambrose (76 not out) made sizeable marks in the scorebook as well, as England built on their overnight 301 for 3 to add 299 more runs at a rate of nearly five an over.By the time Andrew Strauss declared, early in the final session, England’s total of 600 for 6 was their highest since the Oval Test against South Africa in September 2003. Nevertheless, West Indies responded impressively with a volley of strokes before the close, in particular from the in-form Ramnaresh Sarwan, as they made light of the early dismissal of Chris Gayle, via a referred lbw in James Anderson’s third over.It was a breezy day’s batting from both teams, but particularly England, who had to withstand a feisty morning spell from the luckless Fidel Edwards before cashing in on a lacklustre showing from the remainder of the West Indian bowling attack. As on the first day, they lost only three wickets – Kevin Pietersen was removed in the first hour of the day for 41, plumb lbw to Edwards despite his self-indulgent wasting of a referral, and Edwards struck again in the afternoon when Collingwood, sizing up his second hundred in consecutive matches, slogged a length delivery to deep point.Bopara eventually gave Edwards a richly deserved third when, only three balls and one boundary after reaching his hundred, he took on the hook and picked out Jerome Taylor on the fine-leg boundary. The identity of the catcher, however, was rather ironic, for it was Taylor who dropped the clanger that might have spared West Indies much of their day’s toil. Yesterday, Edwards had Andrew Strauss dropped at first slip by Gayle on 58, an error that cost his side 84 runs. Today, Taylor should have clung onto a skied pull when Bopara had made just 4, but the chance went sprawling, and England’s new No. 6 went on to add exactly 100 more to his total. This is Bopara’s first Test since he finished the tour of Sri Lanka in December 2007 with three ducks in a row, but whereas on that occasion the wiles of Muttiah Muralitharan were too much for him, this time he found the pace-dominated West Indies attack much more to his liking. He used his wrists coolly to work the gaps in the leg side, while Taylor, when he wasn’t dropping catches, was noticeably off the pace with the ball. He looked a shadow of the superhero who destroyed England at Sabina Park, and Bopara flogged him through midwicket twice in two balls, as he surpassed his previous Test-best of 34, at Kandy in 2007.When Bopara tried the same against Edwards, however, the results were somewhat different. One pull sailed high off a top-edge and all the way for six, another in Edwards’ next over was completely misjudged, and rattled him a painful blow under the eye. A lengthy break for treatment ensued, in which time Edwards had to be discouraged from having a word or two with the batsman. But Bopara was not discouraged in spite of his shiner, and carried on getting into line to deliveries that were well in excess of the 90mph mark.He went to lunch on 46 not out, and soon after the resumption, he tickled a leg-stump delivery from Sulieman Benn down to the fine-leg boundary to reach the first notable landmark of his Test career. Using his wrists to their full supple effect, he traded singles with his partner Collingwood throughout a 149-run stand, and continued to pick the right ball to attack. Edwards dropped short and was rifled through the leg-side; Sulieman Benn served up a waist-high full-toss that was dispatched through midwicket. After reaching tea on 88 not out, Bopara clicked through the nineties with a cool lofted drive off Taylor, before easing a bouncer from the ever-threatening Edwards into the leg-side to reach three figures. He removed his helmet and saluted the crowd with a modest wave and a gentle impersonation of the Caribbean’s current superstar, Usain Bolt – a mock comb of the hair and a bow-and-arrow salute to the dressing-room.Bopara’s main sidekick was Collingwood, who built on his impressive century in Antigua last week with another powerfully constructed innings. His favourite shot of the day was the pull, which he used to great effect to pick off two of his 12 fours, and he also drove Edwards delightfully down the ground for arguably the classiest boundary of his innings. But just when it seemed nothing could interrupt his flow, along came the temptation of a fourth century in 11 innings.Back into the attack came Edwards, and with four needed for the hundred, Collingwood chose the wrong ball to clobber over the covers. Instead it arced off a leading edge, straight down the throat of Nash on the point boundary, and – just like Pietersen, Sarwan and Alastair Cook before him in this series – he was left ruing one attacking stroke too many with three figures around the corner.Nevertheless, his departure did nothing to interrupt England’s momentum, because out of the blocks burst Ambrose, a bundle of diminutive intent, eager to make up for lost time in his career. Matt Prior’s paternity leave has given him a chance to make amends for a disappointing summer, and by the time of the declaration, he was motoring on 76 not out from 95 balls, with eight fours and two slapped sixes over midwicket off Ryan Hinds. Hinds could have dismissed him for a third-ball duck had Denesh Ramdin clung onto a top-edged cut, but as with so many chances in this match, the opportunity was lost, and England marched onwards and upwards. All the same, West Indies clearly recognised a docile pitch when they saw one, for their response was full of controlled aggression, as Sarwan and Devon Smith pushed through to the close with a 72-run stand. They had to withstand a superb opening spell from James Anderson, who swung the ball both ways at will and removed Gayle for 6 with a late-inducker that the referral showed would have taken out leg stump. But at the other end, Ryan Sidebottom couldn’t find the right length to complement his prodigious swing, and both Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad were easily repelled. England have a total to envy, but West Indies have set themselves to match it, and so preserve their 1-0 series lead.

Palace’s Nketiah talks to pick up pace

An update has emerged on Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, Palace are set to intensify their talks with Arsenal over a deal for Nketiah.

The report claims Patrick Vieira is looking to bolster his squad before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline and a move for Nketiah is due to pick up pace in the coming days.

Imagine him and Benteke

Vieira could land a dream attacking partnership by signing Nketiah as he could form an excellent relationship with Christian Benteke. They could be the little and large duo at the top end of the pitch to cause opposition defences problems this season, which is why Palace must ensure that they can get a deal over the line for the Gunners forward.

The 6 foot 3 Benteke won an impressive 6.8 aerial battles per game in 30 Premier League appearances for Palace last term. Nketiah, meanwhile, has a career average of 0.4 aerial battles won per game for Arsenal, which suggests that he struggles with holding the ball up and winning flick-ons for his teammates.

This means that Nketiah may not be the ideal option for Vieira when playing with one striker on the pitch. However, playing him alongside Benteke could create the perfect foil for the attack, with the Belgian striker able to provide the out ball by holding off defenders and allowing Nketiah to use his movement and pace to get in behind or pick up the ball in pockets of space.

The English forward scored five goals in ten starts for Arsenal last season in the Premier League and Europa League, which suggests that he has the quality to score goals at the top level if given the minutes. In 2020, Mikel Arteta hailed Nketiah’s personality as ‘immense’ and said that he is continuing to develop as a player. He said:

“I want him to keep doing what he’s doing. The way he played last night against those players, in those difficult conditions, for me is extraordinary at his age.

“He has an immense personality to play, confidence, he’s powerful and is developing in every area, I think. I have a lot of faith in him.”

This shows that Nketiah also has the potential to improve further, which is another reason why Palace must sanction this deal. They could be getting a player who could work well alongside Benteke, whilst also making an investment on a talent who could grow and become more valuable in the future.

More Newcastle signings predicted

Newcastle United correspondent Mark Douglas expects more business at the club after a fee was agreed for Joe Willock.

The lowdown

Arsenal have accepted a sum in excess of £20m for the midfielder, who spent the latter half of 2020/21 on loan at St James’ Park.

Provided he agrees to join, the 21-year-old is set to travel to the northeast in the next 24 hours and undergo a medical in the early part of this week. Assuming there are no late hitches, Willock would become the Magpies’ first signing of the summer.

According to Transfermarkt, Newcastle have yet to generate any funds from player exits in this transfer window, as the likes of Christian Atsu, Yoshinori Muto and Andy Carroll have all left on free transfers.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has labelled the club’s budget for this transfer window ‘meagre’ amid Mike Ashley’s efforts to sell up.

The latest

Douglas tweeted that he still believes there will be transfers in and out of Newcastle before the deadline at the end of this month. It won’t necessarily have to be permanent incomings either, with some loan slots available.

He added that Willock was their primary target heading into the transfer window, and that they ‘passed up other options to get him’.

Douglas outlined: “Still think #nufc will do more business – in & out – before deadline. Loan slots available & could be some trading to do.

“Willock was the one they wanted though; and have passed up other options to get him. Hopefully gamble will be shown to have paid off.”

The verdict

In light of the bleak assessment issued by Waugh, it’s somewhat surprising to see Newcastle splash out such a hefty fee for Willock, who could feasibly become the second-most expensive signing in their history given the fee which has reportedly been agreed for him.

What we don’t know at this stage, and what we’re keen to find out, is how the deal is structured, along with the extent to which a balancing of the books will now be required.

It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if loans made up the rest of their arrivals, though, if most of the summer budget goes on a permanent deal for Willock.

In other news, a Newcastle journalist issued this claim on Steve Bruce’s future.
