Sheffield Wed predicted XI v AFC Wimbledon

So far this season, Sheffield Wednesday have won five, drawn three and lost three of their 11 League One games so far this season, leaving them 10th in the table with 18 points.

Following a solid 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in their previous League One match, Wednesday are on the road once again this weekend with a trip to face AFC Wimbledon.

Speaking ahead of the game in London in his latest press conference, Darren Moore revealed that his Owls side are facing something of an injury crisis, with Sam Hutchinson, Lewis Gibson, George Byers and Massimo Luongo all set to miss the match.

Taking this into account, here’s how we feel Wednesday will line up against AFC Wimbledon and what changes Moore will make from the side which started against Bolton. We reckon there will be three alterations from that line-up.

With Bailey Peacock-Farrell now back from international duty, we think he will be picked over Joe Wildsmith, who filled in for the Northern Irishman in goal while he was away.

In defence, we expect Moore to go for three at the back again, with Liam Palmer and Dominic Iorfa keeping their places and Cheyenne Dunkley coming in to replace the injured Gibson, as he did for the second half against Bolton.

In the wing-back positions, we can see Moore sticking with Jaden Brown on the left and Jack Hunt on the right, the latter providing the assist for Lee Gregory’s goal against Bolton.

Moving on to the midfield, we think Barry Bannan will keep his place in the side, with Lewis Wing coming in to replace Hutchinson. The 32-year-old was among the lowest-rated Owls players against the Trotters last week as per Sofascore and could miss out to the loanee, who has been a regular starter so far this season.

In terms of their attacking line, we reckon Moore will stick with the trio of Gregory, Callum Paterson and Saido Berahino to see if they can make the difference up top, as the 33-year-old managed to do in their previous league outing.

It remains to be seen whether this will be the line-up chosen by the Owls boss this afternoon, but victory today could elevate them into the play-off positions and bring them to within two points of current leaders Plymouth Argyle.

Watkins seals emphatic New Zealand win

A round-up from the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 as New Zealand out-classed Australia by nine wickets, and Sri Lanka beat Pakistan

Cricinfo staff12-Jun-2009Australia might, by their own admission, not be the greatest Twenty20 side, and following the men’s early eviction from the ICC World Twenty20, their women’s side also began their campaign with a heavy nine-wicket defeat to New Zealand at Taunton. New Zealand made light work in chasing 124, racing to victory for the loss of just one wicket with their captain, Aimee Watkins, smacking an unbeaten 73 from 51 balls. Australia were restricted to 123 for 8 in their innings, a total which represented a significant recovery after Sian Ruck (3 for 12), the left-arm fast bowler, helped reduce them to 51 for 6. Lisa Sthalekar hit seven fours in her brisk 46 from 36 balls, and though there were contributions from their lower-order, New Zealand’s bowlers were tidy and accurate. Lucy Doolan was the first and only batsman to fall in their chase, run out for 3, and thereafter Suzie Bates and Watkins put on an unbeaten stand of 116 to take their side home, Watkins cracking 12 fours and a six.Eshani Kausalya turned in a fine allround performance, while Sripali Weerakkody held her nerve with 12 from 10 balls, as Sri Lanka got their ICC Women’s World Twenty20 campaign off to a winning start, beating Pakistan by four wickets. Kausalya picked up 3 for 16 in her four overs, helping to restrict Pakistan to an underwhelming 104 for 7. Bismah Maroof top-scored for Pakistan, carrying her bat with 50 from 64, but only Sajjida Shah (18) offered her any support. Sri Lanka’s chase began poorly, losing their captain, Chamari Polgampola, for 4, but Inoka Galagedara put them on track with 37 from 41. Wickets continued to tumble at the other end, and though Kaushalya was sixth-man out for a brisk 23, Weerakkody held firm to guide them home.

Aston Villa: Louie Barry absence explained

Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry has been out of action for Ipswich Town recently due to a nasty tooth abscess, according to Ashley Preece.

The Lowdown: Barry’s loan

Barry was one of 10 Villa youngsters to head out on loan in the summer, with the 18-year-old’s move to Ipswich Town one of the more high-profile transfers of the bunch.

However, the forward has only made three starts for the Tractor Boys in all competitions and is yet to score for the League One side.

He hasn’t featured in the last six third-tier fixtures, and Preece has explained why that has been the case.

The Latest: Preece’s post

Preece shared a story on Twitter on Monday, looking at Kaine Kesler’s impressive loan spell at Swindon Town.

The reliable reporter was then asked by a Villa fan about Barry, to which he said:

“He’s been out with a nasty tooth abscess, believe it or not. Barry was back in match action for Ipswich’s U23s earlier. Villa will address Barry’s loan in January. He desperately needs a run of games.”

As Preece’s reply was direct to a supporter, it went under the radar with a fraction of interaction (two retweets) compared to the post on Kesler.

The Verdict: January recall?

With Preece suggesting Villa will address Barry’s temporary stay in the New Year, a January recall could well be on the cards.

As the journalist mentions, the whole point of Barry heading out of Villa Park was to get a string of first-team games under his belt.

One league start in nine isn’t ideal for the forward who Dean Smith hailed earlier this year, so it could make sense to bring him back to the Midlands in the winter window and go from there, depending on how he fares once fit.

Rice linked with move to Man United

West Ham United star Declan Rice has been linked with a move to Manchester United next summer, via ESPN.

The Lowdown: Rice shines for Hammers

Rice, valued at £63 million, has gotten better and better since breaking onto the scene in the 2017/18 season. Originally a centre-back and a defensive midfielder, the 22-year-old has drastically improved on his game and is now one of David Moyes’ most well-rounded players.

After a strong Euro 2020 with England, Rice returns to the London Stadium this season with European football to dig his teeth in and continues to attract the interest of the top six.

Being close friends with Chelsea’s Mason Mount has previously seen him linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, but with no official offer over the summer, Rice remains a Hammer.

The Latest: United keen next summer

As per ESPN sources, Manchester United ‘remain keen’ on securing the signature of Rice, after opting not to sign a midfielder in the previous transfer window.

The report also states that sources have said a striker and a midfielder are on the list for next summer and Rice is among a number of options that will be looked at come the end of the season.

Rice is under contract until 2024  and it is likely that the Hammers would have to lower their valuation of the midfielder if he is to move on in the future.

The Verdict: New contract or move on

There have been previous reports linking Rice to sign a new contract at the London Stadium, but with no new deal on the horizon just yet, it may be a case of cashing in for a massive fee if he does not agree to extend his stay.

Rice was called an ‘excellent player’ by Alan Shearer for his impressive performances last season and United’s pulling power would be hard to turn down if they came in with a bid in the region of the Hammers’ enormous £100m asking price.

Yes, his departure would hurt the fans, but playing in the Champions League and playing with the best is something Rice wants so if the right offer is made, it could be the best move for all parties to make it happen.

Spurs facing double blow ahead of PL return

Nuno Santo could be without two members of his first-team squad after the international break, according to reports…

What’s the latest?

The Daily Mail claim that Argentina duo Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are facing over three weeks out of action after it emerged that they were under investigation for breaching Brazil’s quarantine rules.

It’s thought that the Spurs pair are facing 14 days of quarantine in Brazil following their World Cup qualifying clash before another ten days upon their return to the United Kingdom.

They have been accused of failing to declare on official documents that they had travelled from the UK when they arrived in Sao Paolo on Friday.

This would, in turn, rule them out of at least three Premier League matches, one Carabao Cup clash and one UEFA Europa Conference League group game, too.

Hammer blow

After the start Spurs have had to the new season, this latest development should leave Nuno absolutely furious as he’ll be without two key squad members for some very crucial encounters.

These fixtures include games against arch-rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, and a trip to Rennes, where they will undoubtedly want to start well to try and win that inaugural competition.

Neither player has featured for many minutes so far this season but given the congested calendar in September, they would have been handed plenty of opportunities to get game time.

The Portuguese head coach was even against the duo travelling abroad during this international break, so for them to get caught up in a saga will only leave him more angry.

“Yes, it’s a big problem, not only for our players, it’s a problem for all the South American players playing in the Premier League because they have to obey the government laws,” he revealed to reporters, via talkSPORT. “But we must be aware that saying no to our national team is very difficult. It’s very difficult, so we’ll see how things go.”

He later added: “It [is] clear – as a club we don’t approve of the situation. What we want is a solution for everybody because this will be a big problem.”

Nuno may well struggle to keep up Spurs’ 100% in the top-flight and continue their fine form into other competitions without having the full depth of his squad available to him.

This will surely come as a hammer blow heading into Saturday’s clash with Crystal Palace.

Pundit hints at Matt Doherty joining Everton on deadline day

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has told Football FanCast there have been murmurings about a possible late deadline day move to Everton for Matt Doherty.

Doherty joined Tottenham from Wolves last summer in a £15m deal, but failed to show the kind of form that made him one of the best attacking full-backs in the Premier League at Molineux.

He did make 13 starts in the league last season but has already slipped behind Japhet Tanganga in the right-back pecking order despite reuniting with Nuno Espirito Santo following his appointment in north London.

Doherty hasn’t started a league game this season, playing just seven minutes overall, with the Conference League likely to be his best pathway for regular minutes.

Emerson Royal’s arrival is expected to reduce Doherty’s chances even further of breaking into Santo’s side, and therefore Bridge revealed that a shock move to Everton could be on the cards.

He told Football FanCast:

“I’ve not heard anything yet, but there have been murmurings of Everton, but I don’t know if there’s anything in it. But I do wonder if he’s been touted about, and a club might go ‘well give him a go’.”

England's return would be a positive for subcontinent – PCB

Will Kevin Pietersen and his team head back to India? © Getty Images

The PCB is in favour of England resuming its tour of India after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, believing the move will send out a “positive signal for cricket in the subcontinent”.”If England returns despite the carnage caused by the Mumbai attacks it would give out positive signals for cricket in the subcontinent. We feel it will also go a long way in India playing us,” Saleem Altaf, the Pakistan’s board’s chief operating officer, told . “I fully support the statement of England captain Kevin Pietersen that we can’t let cowards run cricket. These terrorists who caused so much carnage in Mumbai have to be given out a clear message that people in the region want to live a normal life.”England were five matches into their ODI series against India when the attacks took place last month. The teams were due to play the second Test in Mumbai starting December 19, and were slated to stay at the Taj Mahal hotel, one of the locations targeted. In the wake of the attacks, the final two ODIs of the seven-match series were called off, and the England squad headed back home. The ECB is now awaiting a report from their Reg Dickason, their security expert, who is assessing the situation in Chennai and Mohali, the new venues for the two Tests instead of Mumbai and Ahmedabad. However, there are doubts whether all of England’s first-choice squad are go to India if the tour does proceed as planned; the board has maintained it will leave the decision to the individuals concerned.Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, said the board would make a sensible choice. “Under no circumstances will we allow our cricket to be dictated to by terrorists,” he said. “India is an enormous country and there are large parts of it that have never seen terrorist activity. In 2005 [when terrorists attacked parts of London], the Aussies were sensible and we are doing the same here.” Clarke’s statements came after the ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, urged England to tour India if the security situation is deemed safe. The Pakistan board is also expecting a decision on India’s visit to the country next year. There have been reports the tour would be cancelled as the Indian government take a tough stance on ties with Pakistan after the attacks.”So far the Indian board has just told us that they are waiting for directives from their government and that is the present status quo,” Altaf said. “Our [PCB] chairman Ijaz Butt will meet with his Indian counterpart in Colombo this week during the Asian Cricket Council meeting to discuss things while I am also going to attend the ICC chief executives meeting and we hope to make some headway on the Indian’s tour.”Altaf was hopeful the tour goes ahead; the PCB in the past has said neutral venues would be considered if India are wary about the security situation in Pakistan. “Cricket has to resume in the subcontinent,” he said. “We know that the Indian board wants to support us. Hopefully, the series will be played on schedule right now that is the most important thing for us.”

Celtic: Hoops failed with late Trai Hume move

Celtic were linked with a late swoop for Linfield teenager Trai Hume on deadline day, Belfast Live report.

The Lowdown: Three in

Dominic McKay was a busy man on his first deadline day as Celtic CEO.

Leigh Griffiths, Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard all completed moves away from Parkhead, while Georgios Giakoumakis, Filipe Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers all finalised Glasgow moves with hours to spare.

It seems as if McKay may have had his eye on a fourth late addition for the Hoops, though, going off reports late on Tuesday evening.

The Latest: Hume links

According to Belfast Live, Linfield turned down a number of big-money offers for Hume in excess of £100,000, who can play as a right-back, centre-back or centre-midfielder.

Celtic and English League One side Lincoln City were name-checked with the late interest in the 5 foot 9 teenager, who is reportedly under contract until 2023.

The Verdict: Another Scales?

Celtic recently sealed a move for versatile defender Liam Scales from Shamrock Rovers, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Hoops go back in for Hume further down the line, with there clearly being a focus from McKay on up and coming defenders.

He’s been described as one of the Irish League’s hottest properties, similar to Scales earlier in the summer.

Hume’s versatility could attract Celtic in the next transfer window, as it did with Scales, so it could be a name to keep an eye on over the next 12 months.
