Stuart Dallas stole the show vs Burnley

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United side ensured they got 2022 off to a winning start against Burnley on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Jack Harrison, Stuart Dallas and Dan James being enough to secure an impressive 3-1 win at Elland Road.

The victory sees the Whites move eight points clear of their relegation rivals, however, aside from the positive result, Bielsa will also be delighted with the performances of a number of his players on the day, none more so than makeshift right wing-back Dallas.

Dallas stole the show vs Burnley

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch against the Clarets, the 30-year-old defender was absolutely everywhere for Leeds, not only scoring the club’s second goal of the game with a spectacular curling effort from the edge of the box, but also putting in the hard graft for his side, making five tackles, three interceptions, two clearances and winning seven duels – totalling a whopping 10 defensive actions.

And, while the £3.6m-rated man was rather sloppy with his passing, completing just 19 of his 37 attempted passes – a success rate of just 51% – he nevertheless made up for it in other areas of his game, enjoying 70 touches of the ball – the second-most of any player who featured in the match – completing one dribble, two long balls and taking four shots at the opposition goal.

These returns saw the £53k-per-week Northern Ireland international receive a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.7 – ranking him as Bielsa’s joint-best performer in the match.

Indeed, Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross was also clearly impressed by Dallas’ display on Sunday afternoon, awarding the right-back an eight in his own player ratings, as well as stating of the defender’s display: “Battled well throughout the match and was crucial with his ball-winning challenges to deny Burnley any foothold in the first half of the game. Always marauding and asking questions of the visitors with his runs from deep. Stunning shot to get Leeds back in front in his 250th appearance.”

As such, it is clear for all to see that Dallas well and truly stole the show against Burnley, with the 30-year-old playing a huge role in helping his side secure a much-needed three points against their relegation rivals.

West Ham tipped to sign Cyle Larin

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has tipped David Moyes to sign Besiktas striker Cyle Larin in the January transfer window, as he would ‘fit the bill’ for the Hammers, as per GIVEMESPORT.

The Lowdown: Goals drying up

Goals have recently dried up for the Hammers, who have failed to find the net in their previous three games. Their top scorer Michail Antonio has lost his clinical form, failing to score in his last eight appearances in the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 31-year-old is currently the Irons’ only senior striker and this has caused deep problems for Moyes, as his once reliable attacking threat is no longer bringing in the goals.

As a result, West Ham are looking to bring in a centre-forward in the January transfer window. The manager has already stated that he will dip into the market to provide the squad with some much-needed depth.

The Latest: O’Rourke tips Moyes to sign Larin

Following Moyes’ admission that he will need additions to the West Ham squad if they are to continue in their push for Champions League qualification, O’Rourke has tipped the Irons boss to sign Besiktas striker Larin.

This comes after the Canadian was linked with a move to the east London club before, and the journalist believes that he could be an ideal signing for West Ham.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “He’s a big strong striker who can play right across the front positions as well and that will be attractive to West Ham. He would definitely fit the bill.”

The Verdict: Depth is needed

As the club’s only recognised striker is currently out of form, it is crucial that Moyes is able to bring in an extra attacker in the January transfer window.

Larin has long been tipped for a big European move, even before his switch to the Turkish league. Former Orlando City teammate and Brazil legend Kaká spoke highly of the 26-year-old in the past, saying: “Cyle is a very good player and the third season for us will be great, but I think Cyle can play in a big team in Europe as well.”

Larin has also proven himself on the international stage. In 44 appearances for Canada, he has bagged an impressive 22 goals. This adds to his fine tally at club level; since joining Besiktas, he has made 68 Süper Lig appearances, scoring 29 goals and producing seven assists.

Maybe O’Rourke is right; this could just be the centre-forward alternative to Antonio that Moyes is craving.

van Beek steers New Zealand to seventh place

A round-up of the playoff matches of the Under-19 World Cup that took place on January 26

Cricinfo staff26-Jan-2010New Zealand prevailed in a close encounter in the play-off for seventh place against England, winning by two wickets in the final over at the Village Green in Christchurch. Chasing 229, the hosts were in trouble at 153 for 7 but Logan van Beek’s unbeaten 51 off 46 balls saw them through those tense moments. Several England batsmen failed to convert their starts but they still managed a competitive total. Jack Manuel was the top scorer with 43. Harry Boam, Tim Johnston and Ben Wheeler took three wickets apiece. New Zealand were jolted early in their chase at 37 for 3 before Craig Cachopa and Corey Anderson added 100 for the fourth wicket. But a double-strike by Nathan Buck and a run out set New Zealand back. van Beek and Boam, batting at No.9, ensured a consolation win for the hosts.Noor Hossain’s all-round performance was the highlight of a one-sided encounter in the ninth place play-off semi-final between Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea at Palmerston North. Noor made a brisk 66 to push Bangladesh to 253 and later took four wickets to bundle out PNG for a paltry 85. After opting to bat, Bangladesh were led by Saikat Ali’s 61 but were in a spot of bother at 125 for 6. Tasamul Haq and Noor began the lower-order revival with a stand of 80 for the seventh wicket. Noor hit eight fours and a six in his brisk knock which came off 50 balls. It was a cakewalk when Bangladesh took the field, bundling out PNG within 33 overs. Only four batsmen managed double figures and Noor cleaned up the lower order to finish with 4 for 11.

A super start to Iain O'Brien's farewell Test

The first day of Iain O’Brien’s last Test for New Zealand didn’t begin well but it soon got rapidly better

The first day of Iain O’Brien’s last Test for New Zealand didn’t begin well. Before heading to McLean Park for the series decider, he received “pretty average news” about his UK visa and, after getting there, Daniel Vettori lost the toss and New Zealand had to bowl when they would have preferred to bat. From there on, though, O’Brien’s day got remarkably better.”A few things didn’t go my way this morning before we left the hotel. Managed to push them aside and that might have helped me push a bit harder in the middle. You use what you can to motivate you,” O’Brien said. “I got some pretty average news this morning but we’ll work through that. It may end up delaying my departure by possibly months. So it’s another hurdle to get over.”What O’Brien did, though, was give Pakistan’s batsmen several hurdles to clear and four of them failed. He bowled a hostile, accurate spell in the first session, clocking over 140 kmph consistently, restricting the batsmen with his discipline before delivering the knock-out blow with something extra. At one stage O’Brien’s figures were 4.2-4-3-3. His first wicket, in his first over, was that of Faisal Iqbal and his next three – Mohammad Yousuf, Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq – were all dismissed for zero.Pakistan had slumped dramatically from 39 for 1 to 51 for 5 and were eventually dismissed for 223, a “great result for us bowlers” according to O’Brien. “I think that spell I bowled at the Basin last week, after we were knocked over for 99, was probably up there in quality also,” he said. “But yes, to bowl first on a pretty good deck, to bowl a few maidens and take a couple wickets, it was a great start to what hopefully will be a pretty cool Test.”O’Brien said that the fact that this was his last Test was “part of the thoughts” but was pleased that it spurred him on to wrecking Pakistan’s innings. “To get that first ball out of the way … it’s always the second one for me that’s the messy one, so it was basically ‘get the second ball out of the way’ and keep going.”He didn’t get a five-for, though, and finished with figures of 4 for 32 as Daryl Tuffey mopped up the last four wickets. O’Brien said, with some irony, that it was perhaps fitting that he didn’t take a fairytale five-wicket haul in his last Test given his valuable, yet unglamorous, role in the New Zealand attack, where he often shoulders the burden of bowling into strong winds.”I was pretty keen to get five, and make that a part of my last Test. But it was probably fitting that I didn’t as well because I haven’t had too many fives. So it’s probably best that I didn’t, you know, in terms of the kind of player and the role that I’ve played.”O’Brien had announced his retirement from international cricket during the Wellington Test, which Pakistan won to level the series 1-1. He said the decision was because he wanted to move to the UK to be with his wife and play for Middlesex.

Coufal off pace in West Ham’s draw at Genk

West Ham all but sealed a place in the Europa League knockout stages after a 2-2 draw against Genk on Thursday night.

It wasn’t a performance that was up to the Irons’ usual standard, having squandered their 100% win and clean sheet record but the solitary point did put them one foot into the next round.

An inspired come-from-behind brace from Said Benrahma looked to be enough for the east Londoners to have sealed the victory but Tomas Soucek turned the ball into his own net three minutes from time in what was an unfortunate gaffe.

However, this moment was by no means the reason for the Hammers’ sub-par performance, especially as the Czech midfielder was only on the pitch for half an hour. Instead, there were plenty of others who let manager David Moyes down.

One of which was arguably fellow countryman Vladimir Coufal, who made his first start since returning from injury. He was well off the pace and showed some signs of rust down that right flank.

His 6.5 rating on SofaScore was the second-lowest of any West Ham star behind Craig Dawson (6.3).

And it’s easy to see why as he was hugely wasteful in possession, losing the ball a squad-high 21 times from 52 touches, which in itself shows he was well behind his usual influential nature, having averaged nearly 65 touches per game in the Premier League in 2020/21.

Elsewhere, he was equally lightweight in his battles, winning just one of his four duels (25%). The 29-year-old was also dribbled past twice and failed to provide a single accurate cross from two attempts – considering he delivered seven assists (second-most) last term, this was certainly a poor attacking display too.

To add further misery to his evening, Coufal missed one big chance – had that gone in, then we could very much be speaking differently about the result.

He was just one of many to let down the Scotsman in Belgium, though.

The New Zealanders put in a hard day’s work in the field on the second day at the NCC yet conceded a 27-run lead to Sri Lanka Cricket Development XI. Dinesh Chandimal was the stand-out performer for SLC with a century, helped by Dammika Prasad with a steady fifty, and their stand helped SLC pass the visitors’ score before the lower order collapsed. The tourists added 14 to their overnight score before being bowled out. SLC began on an aggressive note, Tillakaratne Dilshan warming up for the Tests with an aggressive half-century, smashing eight fours and three sixes in his 68. There followed a wobble of sorts when they lost three wickets for 26 runs but they recovered thanks to the 127 put on for the sixth wicket by Chandimal and Prasad.Chandimal, who walked in in the third over, was the mainstay, facing 234 balls for his 109. The pair helped edge past the lead before the visitors struck. Daniel Vettori made the breakthrough when he trapped Prasad lbw for 73 before Iain O’Brien sent back Chandimal two overs later. The pair picked up two more wickets with the new ball as SLC ended on 324 for 9.With the match heading for a draw, the tourists can look forward to more batting practice tomorrow, the final day.
