Three in, Three out at Arsenal?

Silly season is well underway following the official opening of the summer window last week, so transfer rumours are flying in and out with incredible velocity here at Football Fancast.

So quickly, in fact, that we’re struggling to keep track of them all. You probably are too, so we thought it would be a good idea to start compiling all the rumours involving the Premier League’s top clubs into one place, trimmed down into easily digestible chunks.

It looks set to be a particularly busy window for Arsenal as they plan their most viable title charge for a decade ahead of next season, so where better place to start than North London?

There’s copious rumours of arrivals and potential departures at the Emirates, and it’s with that in mind we’ve summarised this week’s hottest Gunners rumours into a streamlined three in, three out format.

Would you like to see these SIX transfer stories prove true before the start of the 2015/16 campaign?

[interaction id=“none”]

OUT – LUKAS PODOLSKI

Having struggled for game-time during the first half of the 2014/15 campaign and resultantly spent the latter portion of it toiling at Inter Milan, managing just the one goal in 18 appearances, Lukas Podolski looks almost certain to leave the Emirates this summer – despite publicly insisting otherwise last week, as reported by BBC Sport – with just a year remaining on his Emirates contract.

There’s certainly some interest in the German World Cup winner. According to The Daily Mail, Galatasaray are considering a £1.5million bid for the 30 year-old. In fact, manager Hamza Hamzaoglu recently told NTV Sport; “Podolski and (Andre) Gignac are both on our shortlist,” referring to the bosman-bound Marseille target man.

But the Liverpool Echo speculate the former Bayern Munich and FC Koln man could land a little closer to home this summer, with Everton also interested.

According to the Mersey-based outlet, news of Galatasaray’s cut-price bid has caught their interest.

IN – GEOFFREY KONDOGBIA

The Daily Star aren’t exactly famed for their credibility but at least this transfer rumour comes with a reliable source and quote from Sky Sports Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio.

Arsenal have been linked with Geoffrey Kondogbia for a while, mooted as potential solution to the physical and defensive limits of their engine room following an impressive campaign at Monaco; averaging 3.1 tackles, 2.5 interceptions and 1.7 successful dribbles per match from his 23 Ligue 1 outings whilst netting as the French outfit eliminated the Gunners from the Champions League.

San Siro duo AC Milan and Inter Milan have already launched bids for the 6 foot 2 enforcer according to The Express, but Di Marzio claims Arsene Wenger has already discussed a summer move with Kondogbia. “Both Inter and Milan are competing to sign him, but now face competition from Arsenal. Wenger holds Kondogbia in high regard, the two have already talked.”

According to The Metro, Monaco value the 22 year-old at just under £25million.

OUT – JOEL CAMPBELL

Another winger-forward who ended up out on loan last season after struggling for game-time. Joel Campbell impressed on loan at Olympiacos during the 2013/14 campaign and at last summer’s World Cup, but is yet to truly imprint himself on the Arsenal squad.

The 22 year-old didn’t exactly uproot trees during his 15-game La Liga stint with Villarreal last season, netting only once, but that hasn’t stopped David Moyes sniffing around.

He wants to bring the Costa Rican international to Real Sociedad this summer, according to The Daily Star, and Campbell certainly hasn’t deterred interest by describing links with the Anoeta outfit ‘an honour’.

“It’s something that is not in my hands, but in the club to which I belong. It’s always an honour when such an important club such as Real Sociedad values you,” he’s recently quoted as quipping.

Meanwhile, the International Business Times, who summarise a reports from Spanish news outlet AS in English, claim the former Saprissa youngster has gone one step further – calling up Arsene Wenger personally and requesting a move to the La Liga outfit.

It follows quotes from Real Sociedad sporting director Loren Juarros, revealing the club are actively pursuing Campbell.

“[And signing Campell] it is not easy. He is a player with a high value and Arsenal are not quick in negotiations. We have interest in him and the boss wants him but we have to work with patience. The player has already expressed his desire to come here and now we have to find the formula to make it financially possible,” he said, according to IBT.

IN – KARIM BENZEMA

According to The Express, Arsenal are going for the softly, softly catchy striker approach in the race to sign Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema.

The 27 year-old boasts 133 goals in 281 appearances for the Bernabeu outfit, helping them claim a La Liga title, a Champions League title and two Copa del Reys during since arriving in the Spanish capital from Lyon in summer 2009.

But the appointment of Rafa Benitez has put the France international’s Los Blancos future in jeopardy, amid reports from The Daily Mail claiming he intends to utilise three-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo as a centre-forward next season, leaving Benzema in some sort of supersub capacity.

No doubt, the 6 foot 2 forward would be a good fit for the Premier League and particularly Arsenal’s lone striking role.

According to The Express, Arsene Wenger plans to wait and see if rumours of Ronaldo’s revised role prove true, and what effect that will have on Benzema’s playing time, before launching a formal bid.

But that hesitation could cost the Gunners; Manchester United are also keen on a deal for the £40million-rated front-man, according to The Guardian.

OUT – CARL JENKINSON

He’s only just returned to the Emirates after a decent campaign out on loan at West Ham, but according to the tabloids Carl Jenkinson could be on the road yet again next season – this time with Sunderland.

That rumour comes courtesy of The Daily Mail, who claim the Black Cats have already agreed a £2million loan fee with the Gunners.

The British tabloid also claim Arsene Wenger believes the 23 year-old still has a future in north London and wants to open negotiations over a contract extension when he gets back from the European Championships with the England U21 squad.

Yet, they also link West Ham as potential obtainers of his services permanently, with the Hammers hoping the £2million they paid to loan Jenkinson last season can be taken off any potential transfer fee.

Meanwhile, The Guardian claim Southampton are also interested in the former Charlton Athletic youngster as they consider replacements for Nathaniel Clyne, who is reportedly on the verge of joining Liverpool.

However, their interest may be ended by the almost-confirmed signing of Portugal international Cedric Soares, as reported by Mirror Football.

IN -PETR CECH

It’s a transfer saga that seemingly has no end despite Chelsea’s Petr Cech only gravitating further towards a much-reported summer move to Arsenal.

Indisputably one of the greatest goalkeepers in Premier League history, boasting four league titles, the 2012 Champions League title, three Golden Gloves and 333 outings for the Blues, the 33 year-old would give a massive boost to the Gunners’ title credentials for next season.

Last week came news that the Czech international would prefer to stay in London, courtesy of Sky Sports, following the revelation that Chelsea are prepared to let him join a Premier League rival.

This week’s instalment offers two contradicting reports. The Daily Mail claim Jose Mourinho is hell-bent on doing whatever he can to prevent an £11million Emirates move, demanding Theo Walcott or Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain in return to stall negotiations whilst PSG wait in the background.

The Independent, on the other hand, report the Blues have conceded Cech already and are now lining up QPR’s Rob Green – who made the most saves of any Premier League keeper last season – as his replacement.

Loan move for Man United starlet ruled out

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway has ruled out the possibility of Wilfried Zaha joining the Eagles on loan this season.

Zaha joined Manchester United in January but immediately re-joined Palace on loan and was a key part of their play-off success securing themselves a place back in the Premier League.

Holloway has dismissed any talk of the England international coming back to Selhurst Park and has wished the Palace academy graduate luck in the future.

Zaha will start pre-season training with his new club this week and will be doing everything he can to impress new boss David Moyes who has already had good things to say about him, as has Holloway.

“I don’t think that deal should even be in their dreams. I think he fulfilled their dreams a month ago,” Holloway told talkSPORT.

“I wish him all the best in his Manchester United career and well done to them for buying him. Sir Alex Ferguson very rarely gets them wrong and David Moyes will be delighted he’s found that talent in his midst because he can win games at the very, very top level.

“He wants to learn and he’s going to learn, but he’s already got 100 games under his belt for Palace and he’s delighted about that.

“I don’t think for one minute I’d even consider asking David Moyes [about signing him] right now. I don’t think it’s fair to the boy. He’s got to have a go at Man United.

“I’m sure I know Moyes that well that if there was a club in the Premier League that Wilfried Zaha wanted to play for, if it wasn’t Manchester United, I’m sure it would be us, so I’m sure the phone would ring.

“But, let’s be perfectly honest, I think the boy is so exciting he’s going to have a chance at Man United and I can see him getting in their first team and I genuinely mean that.”

Manchester United’s defensive woes set to continue

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that his defensive crisis is unlikely to improve anytime soon, in the aftermath of yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Everton.

He said:”I don’t think any [of the defenders] will be fit for Fulham on Saturday. Hopefully Jonny Evans is getting near to be able to start. With a good week’s training it will bring him on a bit and in a couple of weeks he will be okay.” (Guardian)

Marouane Feliani’s headed goal just before the hour mark condemned United to their first opening-day defeat in eight years, with Michael Carrick given the unenviable task of marking the big Belgian in the corner which led to the goal.

Last season’s runners-up were incapable of stopping the supply line to Feliani, who effortlessly held up the ball and became the focal point for the Toffees’ forward play.

This is something that Ferguson emphasised: “It was just difficult to handle him [Fellaini] when they were knocking these balls up to him. They worked from that base all the time and they got a goal from him, so it’s justified.”

Carrick played in the centre-back position alongside the returning Nemanja Vidic, who played his first competitive match in over eight months.

United were continuously troubled by balls into the area, but at least they could be encouraged by the improvement made by David de Gea, who appeared to be unfazed with the home side’s tactics.

Ferguson’s side are already three points behind champions, Manchester City and Chelsea, knowing that a win in Saturday’s match at home to Fulham is vital if they are to keep pace with their title rivals.

But David Moyes was understandably delighted with the result, although he stated that his side would not become complacent and believe their history of starting badly to a season was over.

“I’m really pleased because I thought the team performed ever so well and got a great result.

“We haven’t started the season very well [in recent seasons] and even tonight’s result doesn’t tell you you’ve started the season well. You probably judge it after about 10 games how you start the season”, he added.

HYS: Should Jose Mourinho drop Jesse Lingard vs Arsenal?

At times, this season has felt like a career-defining one for Jesse Lingard.

The England international has enjoyed special moments in a Manchester United jersey before, but with more illustrious names struggling to deliver he’s often been the one to rise to the occasion this term – to score or set up the goals that get the Red Devils over the line.

But Lingard remains somewhat expendable, especially now that Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba are beginning to enjoy good form after an underwhelming start to 2018.

That has seen Lingard move from a more central role to the right wing in recent weeks, but he’s struggled to have the same impact from out wide – the only real exception being an assist against Bournemouth.

And with a Premier League clash against Arsenal on the horizon, Jose Mourinho is left facing a key decision. He’s obviously a big fan of Lingard’s, but Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial represent more than ample alternatives who are arguably better suited to the right wing berth.

So, United fans, would you drop Lingard, who Transfermarkt value at £22.5million, against the Gunners? Let us know by voting below…

Man United, Chelsea … Five of the biggest bargains in history

As the Premier League season reaches it’s climax over the coming weeks attention has already turned to the summer transfer window. Gareth Bale, Ross Barkley and Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling are just three of the players that have been linked with big money moves this week; deals that could cost in excess of £50m for any potential buyers.

Staggering amounts yes, but it’s the way football has become. Nowadays if you want the best talent, you have to be prepared to pay a lot for it. Well most of the time that is . . . Sometimes, despite the crazy money that players go for today, teams can still grab themselves a bargain. And it’s these types of signings that often prove to be the best.

Looking back at the way some players have performed since arriving for a moderately cheap fee in comparison to others around them, it’s hard to believe just what a good deal certain clubs have got when signing the cheque for these individuals.

Every Premier League team has nabbed themselves a bargain or two in recent seasons, and here are FIVE of the biggest:

Rafael van der Vaart

Football – Tottenham Hotspur v Blackburn Rovers Barclays Premier League – White Hart Lane – 29/4/12Rafael van der Vaart celebrates after scoring Tottenham’s first goalMandatory Credit: Action Images / Matthew ChildsLivepicEDITORIAL USE ONLY. At just £8m, Dutch midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart certainly proved to be money well spent for Tottenham after his arrival in 2010. He was instrumental in the side’s impressive Champions League campaign, and proved himself to be on the best attacking midfielders around during his two years at White Hart Lane.

He found the net 15 times during in his first season at the club before another 13 the following year. His departure back to Hamburg in 2012 did come as a slight surprise, but there was no surprise when Spurs announced that he was to leave for £2m more than they had purchased him for.

Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool were said to be taking a gamble when they signed Philippe Coutinho for £8.5m after the Brazilian had failed to establish himself as a regular for Inter. But you just have to look at his performances this season to see it was certainly a gamble worth taking.

Coutinho continues to get better and better and has become a vital part of a Liverpool side pushing for Champions League qualification. Some spectacular goals alongside numerous assists has seen him to develop into one of the league’s top midfielders, and Inter must be looking back in envy at what he is producing on the pitch. One thing’s for sure; he’s worth a heck of a lot more money now.

Seamus Coleman

It’s hard to believe that Everton managed to sign one of the Premier League’s best full-backs for as little as £60,000 back in January 2008. An unknown quantity when he arrived from Sligo Rovers, the Irish star has gone on to become an integral part of Everton, with his ability as an attacking defender attracting attention from Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Chelsea.

With greater importance on full-backs in today’s game, his ability to get up and down the wing, deliver quality crosses and chip in with a fair number of goals mean he is now a superb all-round defender. It’s difficult to see Coleman remaining at Goodison Park for much longer with the prospect of Champions League football sure to tempt him. But if he is to leave, Everton can easily pocket at least £20m which will mean a significant return on their investment.

Thibaut Courtois

Belgian star Thibaut Courtois has finally established himself as Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper after taking over from Petr Cech and he looks set for a long career at Stamford Bridge. £8m for a 19-year-old goalkeeper appeared a hefty sum of money when they prized the highly-rated youngster away from Genk back in 2011, but he has certainly vindicated is price tag.

A hugely successful loan spell at Atletico Madrid saw him develop into one of the world’s best goalkeepers, and after winning a La Liga title and narrowly missing out on lifting the Champions League trophy, it was no surprise to see him return to Chelsea and become a regular in the side. It’s remarkable what this 22-year-old has already achieved in his career, and that £8m now looks like money well spent when you consider just how long he could remain at Chelsea.

Cristiano Ronaldo

It’s not often you would perceive a fee of £12m to be a bargain, but perhaps the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo is the best deal in Premier League history. After impressing in a preseason friendly for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United made sure he was soon to be a Red Devil, but not even they could have foreseen the impact he would have at the club.

Ronaldo spent six glorious seasons at Old Trafford where he won the lot. He developed into arguably the best player in the world with an outstanding goal-scoring ability that saw him break a club record with 42 goals in the 2007/08 campaign.

Losing a player of his stature was always going to be a huge loss for the club, but having always stated his ambition to play for Real Madrid not many held it against him – particularly after all he had done for the club. Ronaldo signed for the Spanish giants for a world record £80m in 2009, leaving United with a massive £68m profit.

Martin Jol issues call for transfer backing

Martin Jol has called for the Fulham board to back him by claiming the club need up to six new signings this summer.

The Craven Cottage boss has revealed the size of the rebuilding job he believes needs to be done to move the club forward after two years of treading water.

Jol is keen to avoid a repeat of this season’s struggle for survival and already has one eye on the summer transfer market.

The Dutchman, by going public with his thoughts, has cranked up the pressure on the club’s chairman and chief executive to back him with the funds to strengthen his squad.

Jol is still smarting from the loss of Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey to Tottenham on transfer deadline day last August, particularly as it looked like the club had fought off Liverpool’s interest in the American.

“We need four, five or six players but that’s normal at any club,” said Jol. “We need to strengthen.

“Our home form was always good last year. Last year we could score out of nothing; we had Clint Dempsey to score winners. With Dimitar Berbatov, we gained somebody who could score goals but we lost things in other areas.”

Alexander-Arnold deserves new Liverpool deal but needs to keep his feet on the ground

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to sign a new bumper contract at the end of the season, according to The Mirror.

What’s the word?

The publication reports that in February, the 19-year-old triggered a clause in his contract after reaching 30 matches for the senior team.

In doing so, the Merseyside outfit will double Alexander-Arnold’s wages and will tie him down to a fresh four-year contract.

The teenager has been in stunning form over the last few months, particularly in the two-legged Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City.

So far this season, Alexander-Arnold, who was born in Liverpool, has featured in 25 matches in all competitions and 15 of those have been Premier League starts.

Is a salary increase a good idea?

Even though the England Under-21 international has been performing an an elite level, it is worth remembering that he is still only 19.

[ad_pod ]

At the moment, Alexander-Arnold is showing the confidence and discipline required to compete regularly in the senior team, and he has become a favourite among the Liverpool fans.

However, it was not that long ago when he made costly blunders against Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The youngster certainly came into his own against Man City as he was able to keep Leroy Sane quiet, but he is not the finished product just yet.

Alexander-Arnold deserves to be rewarded for his performances, but he must not get ahead of himself, particularly now that there are murmurs of him potentially going to the World Cup with England this summer.

The teenager will continue to thrive under Klopp at Anfield, but it is imperative that he does not focus too much on the hype surrounding him.

Arsenal looking to La Liga this summer?

With the end of the season edging ever closer, potential transfers for the summer months have already began. Arsenal are one of the teams who are linked with huge deals coming in and going out. If any of these whispers are true, Arsene Wenger is in for a busy summer, and could put together a title winning side for next season.

Sami Khedira announcing he will leave Real Madrid in the summer has immediately resulted in him beig linked with a move to north London. Khedira’s contract runs out in June and he won’t be staying with Los Blancos. This is not the first time the Germany international ahs been linked to Arsenal, and given they signed Mesut Ozil from Real, stranger things have happened.

Theo Walcott’s days in North London may be numbered. After spending almost a full year out due to injury, Walcott may not be moving too far. Chelsea are rumoured to be interested in Walcott, ending his nine year stint with Arsene Wenger.

Santi Cazorla has also had questions raised over his future in the Premier League. Atletico Madrid are reportedly keen to sign Cazorla, but the midfielder has played down the rumours of his move. He claims he is aware of the interest, but he feels ‘valued’ at Arsenal. Do footballers ever mean what they say, though?

Don’t be surprised if Cazorla does leave in summer.

Raheem Sterling’s ongoing contract negotiations have led many to believe he is looking for an exit strategy. Arsenal are supposed to be interested in the 20-year-old, amongst plenty of others. A bidding war could resume for Sterling’s signature, who has stated his contract woes are not down to money.

Arsene Wenger has his eye on Paolo Dybala, who will not be leaving for anything less than £29 million, claims the Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini. Juventus are also monitoring Dybala.

If Arsene Wenger can manage any of these rumours, Arsenal will be a side to be reckoned with next season. Sami Khedira would be a great addition to his squad, and Cech is an outstanding ‘keeper who just has much younger competition. Raheem Sterling seems less likely to sign for the Gunners, I think he has his eye on a move abroad.

West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Arsenal – Match Review

Summary: Thomas Rosicky scored in both halves as 10-man Arsenal gave their Champions League quest a boost with victory at West Brom. The Czech Republic midfielder found the net with a diving header in the first half and drilled home his second to make it six wins in seven for the Gunners. They were denied a clean sheet though as Per Mertesacker was sent off for fouling Shane Long in the penalty area allowing James Morrison to covert from the spot.

Eightieth minute: CHANCE! Gareth McAuley spurns a glorious chance to earn the home side a point as he rises high abobe Laurent Koscielny to meet Morrison’s set-piece but his header clips the outside of the post and goes.

Good day for….Thomas Rosicky: It proved to be a memorable afternoon for Rosicky as he scored twice in a league game for the first time in an Arsenal shirt to earn them a valuable win and lift them into the top-four.

Bad day for….Per Mertesacker: The German defender paid the ultimate price for a momentary rush of blood that saw him hack down Shane Long in the Arsenal box and was subsequently served with his marching orders by referee Howard Webb.

Steve Clarke said…”Anybody who watched today’s game from the start would say if we got the equaliser it would have been thoroughly deserved. We can’t keep conceding goals, especially against a team like Arsenal.”

Arsene Wenger said…”I am very pleased, it is three big points. We have 22 points out of the last 27 but we know our target is to continue to do that until the end of the season. We know we have one target to win our games, then we don’t have to look at Tottenham or Chelsea.”

Aston Villa fans are desperate to sign Sam Johnstone this summer

Aston Villa goalkeeper has been one of the stand-outs for Steve Bruce’s side in their bid for promotion to the English Premier League this season but his long-term future at Villa Park is in doubt.

On loan from Manchester United, there’s no sign yet that a deal is to be completed for his permanent signature.

The player himself opened up on the subject earlier this week, admitting he would be happy to stay on at a place that has now become his home after struggling to make a breakthrough at Old Trafford.

Fans are desperate to see that happen, especially after his goalkeeping heroics against Cardiff City on Tuesday night, believing he should be one of the club’s first signings this summer.

Whether that signing hinges on Premier League promotion is another matter, with many top-flight clubs likely to be interested in his services if he becomes available for transfer.

Supporters took to Twitter this week to share their desire for him to stay on at the Villans…
