Celtic eyeing move for Harwood-Bellis

Celtic are reportedly interested in Manchester City youngster Taylor Harwood-Bellis, according to reports.

What’s the word?

As per Sky Sports, Ange Postecoglou’s side are believed to be ‘monitoring’ the 20-year-old ahead of a potential deal, albeit with contact yet to be made regarding a possible switch.

The report suggests that the Scottish champions are keen to strengthen defensively this summer – at both centre-back and left-back – even if they manage to secure Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent deal.

The desire to bolster at centre-back has also been heightened by Christopher Jullien’s ‘uncertain’ situation, as per the report, with the Frenchman having been linked with a return to Ligue 1.

Frimpong 2.0

As the report also outlines, the Old Firm outfit have enjoyed good relations with City – and the City Football Group – over the last few years, having brought in a number of players from the Etihad that have gone on to do well north of the border.

One such figure to have impressed after making the move from Manchester to Glasgow was young Dutchman Jeremie Frimpong, the attacking full-back having been signed straight from the academy back in 2019.

Having joined for a reported fee of just £1m, the Amsterdam-born ace went on to quickly catch the eye at Parkhead, eventually recording 11 goal contributions in 51 appearances in all competitions over the next 18 months.

Such were the nature of his displays that it wasn’t long before one of Europe’s elite came knocking, with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen plucking him for €11m (£9.3m) in January 2021 – representing a tidy profit for the club.

Although Postecoglou and co will be more concerned with the potential impact that Harwood-Bellis could have on the pitch were he to join this summer, the Frimpong example illustrates how the club can successfully nurture young talent in order to generate funds, with the player also aware that Celtic Park offers the platform to impress as well as win silverware.

The £6.3m-rated defender has spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers, Anderlecht and most recently at Stoke City in the Championship, having failed to really break into Pep Guardiola’s first-team thoughts.

In his time away from his parent club, however, the Stockport-born starlet has certainly showcased his talent, with Tony Mowbray having praised the “old school” youngster for his “aggressive” approach during his time at Ewood Park.

It would no doubt be a step up to join a club who are set to compete in the Champions League next term, although as the Frimpong case study shows, there is a pathway to success for emerging prospects at Celtic.

Aston Villa handed double blow after Man City injury update

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, who can do former club Liverpool a favour in the race for the Premier League title, has been dealt a huge blow after an injury update from today’s opponents Manchester City.

The Lowdown: Top half finish still possible

Villa could only manage a draw against Burnley on Thursday, leaving them on 45 points in 14th place heading into the final day. However, Gerrard’s side still have an outside chance of finishing in the top 10.

The Villans travel to the Etihad Stadium knowing that a win could take them above Crystal Palace, Brentford, Newcastle and Brighton. A victory would also help out Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, but Villa’s task appears to have been made harder following news on John Stones and Kyle Walker.

The Latest: Stones and Walker set to feature?

Pep Guardiola admitted just two weeks ago that both Stones and Walker would be out for the rest of the season alongside Ruben Dias.

However, the England internationals have now returned to training just days before the visit of Gerrard’s side, with Guardiola revealing on Friday afternoon that the pair may feature today.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-news/” title=”Aston Villa latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Not ideal

City struggled defensively last time out against West Ham, with Fernandinho lining out as a centre-back. The league leaders have the best defensive record in the top flight, so another makeshift back four would have been a boost for Gerrard.

However, it looks as if two of their main defenders could make a shock return at a crucial time, possibly making things even more difficult for Villa.

Gerrard did start with both Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings on the bench on Thursday, so he may need the former Liverpool duo at the top of their game for Villa to pose a threat if they are to spoil the party at the Etihad.

Bielik warned against Rooney’s Derby wish

Derby County defender Krystian Bielik has been told by his Poland international manager that he must leave the club if he has any hopes of playing for his country at the World Cup later this year.

The Lowdown: Bielik profiled

The 24-year-old first arrived at Pride Park for an undisclosed fee from Premier League side Arsenal three years ago, where he has since gone on to make 49 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring three goals during that time, as per Transfermarkt.

Despite the centre-back still having two years remaining on his current contract with the Rams, he’s been advised – one could even say warned – to think about departing the Midlands outfit in the coming months.

The Latest: Michniewicz sends clear transfer message

When speaking during an interview with Sport TVP (as quoted by DerbyshireLive), Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz revealed that he’s made Bielik aware that he won’t be boarding the plane to Qatar if he is still playing League One football next season. He said:

“I told Krystian that he would not go to the World Cup playing at League One level. I know he has a two-year contract, but he has to leave.

“Even if all the players stay there, including the coach.

“From third-tier level to the World Cup, it will be hard to go and compete with the best. We must have players playing in the best teams, because there will be very little time to prepare.”

The Verdict: Rooney disagrees

Despite being relegated from the Championship just weeks ago, Derby boss Wayne Rooney has claimed that he is ‘absolutely’ confident that Bielik will still be a Rams player at the start of the new campaign, and it’s no surprise to see why he’s such a big fan.

This season alone, the 6 foot 2 colossus has averaged 2.3 long balls, 1.1 tackles, and 1.1 clearances per league 90 minutes, alongside winning 1.9 of his aerial duels, via WhoScored, displaying his physical presence in that defensive backline.

With Chris Kirchner’s takeover of the club close to officially going through after announcing that he’s exchanged contracts for the sale, this now means that with funding about to restart, Rooney can begin planning his major summer rebuild in a bid to bounce back up to the second-tier at the first time of asking next year.

Southampton: Brekalo transfer update

Southampton are interested in on loan Torino star Josip Brekalo, according to a report from Italian newspaper Tuttosport (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: Career so far

Currently on loan in Italy from parent club VfL Wolfsburg, the 23-year-old has so far amassed 192 professional career appearances across spells with Dinamo Zagreb and VfB Stuttgart prior to his most recent moves.

A fully-fledged Croatia international, Brekalo was a reported target for Everton, Liverpool and several La Liga sides in the summer of 2021.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-newest-updates/” title=”Southampton newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

And, despite Torino having a reported €13million (£11million) option to buy in the loan deal from Wolfsburg, other potential suitors are now in contention to land the winger.

The latest: Saints eyeing ‘sensational twist’

As per Tuttosport, cited by SW, Southampton are believed to be ‘in the lead’ to sign Brekalo should the permanent move to Italy not be triggered.

It’s claimed that the Saints are ‘ready to throw themselves’ into the mix to sign the man capped on 30 occasions by Croatia.

However, the report states that it would take a ‘sensational twist’ were Torino to pass up the opportunity to sign Brekalo, who has been dubbed an ‘exciting talent’ by journalist Josh Bunting following a brace against Fiorentina this season.

The verdict: Star capture

So far this season Brekalo has scored seven times and provided three assists in 33 appearances across all competitions, earning an impressive 7.10 Sofascore rating in the process. He is completing 1.3 dribbles, taking 1.4 shots and winning 0.7 fouls on average per game.

When using the FBref comparison tool, the versatile Croatian attacker is keeping some esteemed company in terms of playing style, closely matching the likes of Dmitri Payet and Arsenal duo Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard.

With the futures of Theo Walcott, Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo under scrutiny, for anything close to the apparent current asking price, Ralph Hasenhuttl would welcome Brekalo to the St Mary’s ranks with open arms as the Austrian looks to bolster the ranks ahead of next season.

West Brom right to let ‘good player’ go, says Palmer

BBC pundit Carlton Palmer has admitted that he thinks it is absolutely the ‘right decision’ for West Brom to allow Andy Carroll to leave the club this summer.

The Lowdown: Carroll set to depart

The 33-year-old first arrived at the Hawthorns on a free transfer in the January window following the expiration of his short-term deal with fellow Championship rivals Reading.

He made 15 appearances for the Baggies, scoring three goals during that time, as per Transfermarkt.

The forward’s current contract with West Brom is set to expire at the end of June, and since the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, it’s been reported that Steve Bruce will not be offering Carroll new terms, meaning that he has already played his last game for the Midlands outfit.

The Latest: Palmer backs West Brom decision

When asked whether or not the club made the right choice to part ways with the nine-cap international, Palmer told Football League World ‘what’s happening’:

“Absolutely right decision.

“I mean, I think I always thought that Andy Carroll was a short-term fix to try and help them out, doesn’t play enough games and doesn’t score enough goals.

“I mean, he’s, he’s been a good player, a very good player, but he’s, he’s at the end of his career now.

“So teams will take him in, I mean I’m sure Andy Carroll is still earning decent money, but teams will take him in on short-term gigs now, and that’s what’s happening.”

The Verdict: A true professional

Carroll definitely made an impact during his short stint with the Baggies, adding a different dimension up top with his physical presence, standing at a staggering 6 foot 3.

It doesn’t come as any surprise to see the striker being let go though, especially considering that the club had a disappointing end to the campaign, having missed out on a top-six place.

Bruce will now be looking to bolster his ranks hopefully with younger players rather than renewing contracts of older, more experienced individuals if he wants to make a serious push for promotion next season.

The £720k-rated veteran is now likely to find himself skipping around multiple clubs on short-term deals after his imminent Hawthorns departure which should take him to the end of a very successful football career.

In other news… a journalist has backed a West Brom shot-stopper to be their new first-choice keeper next season.

Man Utd have a clear run at Declan Rice

According to ESPN, Manchester United are emerging as the favourites to sign West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.

The lowdown: Rice a wanted man

The 23-year-old has quickly become one of the hottest properties in European football following a rapid rise to prominence for both club and country.

Having left the acclaimed Chelsea academy to join West Ham in 2013, Rice has become an established member of David Moyes’ side, and also for Gareth Southgate at international level following a switch of allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

With interest previously mooted from Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, a fresh update has suggested that Old Trafford could be the most likely destination for the midfielder…

The latest: United frontrunners to sign Rice

As per ESPN sources, the Red Devils could have a ‘clear run’ at the 29-cap England star this summer.

The report states that United want Rice to become a ‘modern-day version’ of Paul Ince and will look to snap up the enforcer at the end of the season.

It’s also claimed that incoming manager Erik ten Hag will view the man likened to United legend Roy Keane by Stuart Pearce – who also called the 23-year-old “dynamic” – as a ‘statement signing’ as the Dutchman attempts to stamp his authority on the Premier League.

The verdict: No brainer

With United set to wave goodbye to Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, there are certainly spaces to be filled in the Old Trafford squad.

Despite a lofty £150m price tag handed down by Moyes, Rice could be worth the investment in the long run owing to his tender years and already top-class productivity.

So far this season, the powerful midfielder has earned an outstanding 7.17 average Sofascore rating whilst boasting a 92% passing accuracy and winning five duels and 2.1 tackles per game in the Premier League.

Therefore, it seems a no-brainer for United to try and bring him to Old Trafford, particularly if they are now in such a dominant position to win the race for his services.

Leeds: Orta can axe Klich with Aaronson

In a recent Q&A for The Athletic, Phil Hay revealed that, should Leeds United go on to secure their place as a Premier League side in 2022/23, Victor Otra will once again make a move for RB Salzburg’s Brenden Aaronson in the summer transfer window – with the journalist adding that the Whites have a good chance of getting this deal over the line.

In response to a fan asking for an update on Jesse Marsch’s potential summer transfer targets, Hay said: “If Leeds stay up, they’ll try again to sign Brenden Aaronson from Salzburg. There’s a good chance of that happening.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

And, it is not difficult to see why Orta would be interested in a move for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder – for whom he saw a £20m bid rejected in the January window – this summer, as the USA international would appear to be something of a perfect fit for Marsch’s tactical setup.

Indeed, the £18m-rated talent covers a great deal of ground in fixtures, with Hay stating in a report back in February that Aaronson will travel an average of 10.7km over the course of a typical 90 minutes – something that sees the youngster rank amongst the highest distances covered by Premier League players this season.

The £19k-per-week dynamo is also an extremely active and efficient presser, with his average of 27.23 pressures per 90 seeing him rank in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s big five leagues over the last 365 days.

Furthermore, the player who Matthias Jaissle dubbed a “monster” is also impressive in the final third, scoring four goals, registering four assists and creating seven big chances over his 23 Austrian Bundesliga appearances this season.

As such, with it being said that Orta has identified clear shades of Mateusz Klich in the American, and with the 31-year-old Leeds midfielder looking as if he could be “on his way out” – in the words of Mirror journalist David Anderson – of Elland Road this summer, the 21-year-old would appear something of a perfect replacement for the £34k-per-week Poland international.

Indeed, the player who Joe Wainman dubbed “lacklustre” has been exactly this over his 29 Premier League appearances this season, averaging an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.69 – ranking him as the Whites’ ninth-worst performer in the top flight.

So, when taking all of the above into account, it would indeed appear a very wise move for Orta to move the £3.6m-rated Klich on to pastures new at the end of the current campaign, before reinvesting the funds received from his sale – as well as his substantial weekly wage – into a £30m move for Aaronson this summer.

Farke could unleash Leeds' best English talent since Rio Ferdinand

One of the most notable players in Leeds United’s history over the past 25 years or so is certainly Rio Ferdinand. The former England centre-back only spent two seasons at Elland Road, between 2000 and 2002, but certainly left a huge impact on the club.

Ferdinand, who has gone into punditry and presenting since his retirement, played 73 times in West Yorkshire and was a key figure in the heart of the defence. He skippered the club on numerous occasions, including during their famous Champions League run of 2000/01, where he helped them reach the semi-final.

Since Ferdinand’s days at the club, there have been a couple of other notable English talents ply their trade at Elland Road.

Leeds’ notable English talents since Ferdinand

It is certainly hard to find a player as good as Ferdinand was, yet, through their academy, the Whites produced a couple of big names. One of those was Kalvin Phillips, who was lovingly dubbed the “Yorkshire Pirlo” for his ability to control the game at the heart of midfield.

Now 29 years of age, Phillips played 234 games for his boyhood club after graduating from their academy. He was pivotal to their success in returning to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa and England’s run to the final of Euro 2020.

Eventually, he earned a big move to Manchester City, although his career has stalled since.

Another player who could be considered one of Leeds’ most talented since Ferdinand is Archie Gray. The 19-year-old now plays for Tottenham Hotspur and helped them win the Europa League last season.

Like Phillips, Gray is an academy graduate and only had one full season at Elland Road before the Lilywhites snapped him up. He played 52 games for his boyhood club before departing for North London, a huge £30m move which highlighted his talent.

As good as Phillips and Gray are, there is someone in the Leeds academy who could be considered their best talent since Ferdinand.

Leeds’ most talented player since Ferdinand

It is always a proud moment when you bring a player through the academy and into the first team, like Phillips and Gray. Ferdinand, of course, came through West Ham United’s academy before his move to Leeds.

Well, the man who could be their biggest talent since the centre-back is Harry Gray, the younger brother of Archie. At just 17 years of age, Gray has already made his debut for the club and has shone at youth level.

The England under-17 striker made his debut for the first team last season, with Daniel Farke giving him a four-minute cameo in the 6-0 win over Stoke City. He was also on the bench for the 3-1 win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers this season.

The Whites academy graduate has proven why he is “the real deal,” as football analyst Ben Mattinson put it, for the youth sides. Gray has 15 goals and two assists in just 24 appearances for the under-18s and under-21s side combined.

One of the standout moments from Gray’s campaign so far is the hat-trick he scored against Scunthorpe United.

Donning the number nine shirt, you can see from this one game that the striker possesses pace, a real instinct in the box and the ability to score a range of goals.

It is easy to see why you might consider the 17-year-old to be Leeds’ best talent since Ferdinand was at the club. In a separate post on X, Mattinson described him as “one of England’s best prospects in his generation”, while evoking a certain Harry Redknapp when suggesting that he’s “going to the very top”.

With the numbers he puts up and the skillset he possesses, it feels like only a matter of time before Gray breaks into the first-team for his boyhood side and makes a real name for himself.

Here's a detailed look at FC Porto's top 10 earners… 10 Alan Varela €24,038 per week

Alan Varela signed a new deal with FC Porto in 2025, seeing his salary increase by €10,000 per week.

The Argentine midfielder has gone from strength to strength in Portugal and is now under contract until 2030.

9 Nehuen Perez €24,038 per week

Centre-back Nehuen Perez made the move to FC Porto from Udinese in 2024.

The Argentina international was only on loan at the Estadio do Dragao, but he made a move permanent in 2025.

8 Diogo Costa €27,692 per week

Academy graduate Diogo Costa made his senior debut for FC Porto in 2019 and hasn’t looked back.

The Portugal international has gone on to be first-choice for club and country in recent years and has even been linked with a big-money move away, so eventually, FC Porto could cash in on one of the best goalkeepers in the game today.

7 Samu Omorodion €31,346 per week

It looked as if Samu Omorodion would be joining Chelsea from Atletico Madrid in 2024, but after a deal broke down, FC Porto came in and secured the forward’s services.

The youngster made an instant impact in Portugal, scoring 11 goals in his first 10 appearances in all competitions.

6 Alberto Costa €36,923 per week

Portuguese full-back Alberto Costa returned to his native country in 2025 after a brief spell in Italy with Juventus.

The former Vitoria S.C right-back cost Porto €15m and signed a five-year contract.

5 Gabri Veiga €38,462 per week

Gabri Veiga was handed the number 10 shirt after signing for Porto from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in 2025.

Like Costa, Veiga also cost €15m and signed a deal until 2030 and can play as an attacking midfielder or out wide.

4 Pepe €40,385 per week

Not to be mistaken with the iconic centre-back who also played for FC Porto, Brazilian winger Pepe is one of three players on €48,077 per week.

After joining from Gremio in 2021, Pepe is under contract until 2027.

3 Jan Bednarek €40,385 per week

After eight years as a Southampton player, Jan Bednarek swapped St Mary’s for FC Porto in 2025 in a deal worth €7.5m.

The centre-back signed a four-year deal and is set to earn €10m in wages during that time.

2 Luuk de Jong €40,385 per week

Experienced striker Luuk de Jong was announced as a shock signing during one of FC Porto’s pre-season fixtures at the Estadio do Dragao.

He didn’t cost Porto a penny, allowing them to give De Jong a €2.5m per year deal.

1 Jakub Kiwior €66,731 per week

Top of the list as FC Porto’s hughest paid player for 2025/26 is defender Jakub Kiwior, who is on loan from Arsenal for the season.

The Poland international found game time hard to come by at the Emirates and there is thought to be an obligation for a deal to become permanent in 2026.

Arsenal offered 21-goal striker who's a "priority signing" for Tottenham

It is practically indisputable that Arsenal are in the market for a new striker this summer, and Mikel Arteta’s side have now been handed the chance to get one over on arch rivals Tottenham by signing a key target of Thomas Frank’s side.

New sporting director Andrea Berta is currently busy attempting to negotiate agreeable terms on a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but find themselves some way off the Bundesliga side’s asking price of around £68-85 million, according to Sky Germany’s (Florian Plettenberg).

Arsenal negotiations for Sesko have been ongoing since late May, but if a deal cannot be struck for the Slovenia international, Berta does have other reported striker targets on his shortlist.

Arsenal have also worked on a deal for Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, who is currently keen on a move to north London and open to joining other high-profile Premier League suitors like Man United.

“Viktor Gyökeres prefers a move to the Premier League, and would welcome an Arsenal bid,” reported Ben Jacobs on X recently.

“Arsenal still deciding between Benjamin Sesko and Gyökeres. Andrea Berta simultaneously advancing both deals. Gyökeres would be open to Manchester United. There has been no formal rejection, but a deal to date has also never been at an advanced stage, despite suggestions.

“United have not made any formal approach to Sporting. Swedish striker one of several striker options discussed. Gyökeres believes he’ll still be allowed to leave Sporting for €70m. Arsenal have always been one to watch, but it will depend on Berta now because he is also in ongoing talks for Sesko at the same time, with a bid for one of the two targets expected soon.”

Either centre-forward would be an upgrade on Arteta’s current options. Sesko is fresh off a career-best Bundesliga campaign at Leipzig, while Gyokeres has just guided Sporting to their first domestic double in 20 years after scoring 54 goals in all competitions.

However, Arsenal now also have a new left-field option.

Arsenal offered Dynamo Kyiv striker Vladyslav Vanat

According to website Just Arsenal, Dynamo Kyiv striker Vladyslav Vanat has been put forward to Arteta’s side.

Vanat scored 21 goals in all competitions last season, helping Kyiv to lift the Ukranian Premier League title whilst ending the season unbeaten. He also finished 2024/2025 as the division’s top scorer with 17, and this has attracted some attention from England.

It is now believed that Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Vanat, who has a reported £17 million release clause in his contract. Arteta doesn’t view the 23-year-old’s signing as an urgent need right now, but is fully aware of Vanat’s quality, so it’s apparently a situation they could revisit later in the window.

However, if they do decide they want him, Arsenal will need to be wary of rival interest. Manchester United, Leeds United, Everton, and Tottenham are all keen on Vanat, with the latter even viewing him as a “priority signing” for new manager Frank.
