Rahane shines for dominant West Zone

West Zone took complete control of the Duleep Trophy final on the third day in Chennai. Despite S Badrinath’s unbeaten century, West’s bowlers shut out South for 199 in the first session, giving a first-innings lead of 260

How they were out

Ajinkya Rahane was out agonisingly close to his second century of the match but his aggressive innings stretched West Zone’s lead to a mammoth 492, after his team’s spinners Ramesh Powar and Rajesh Pawar took three wickets each to bowl out South for 199. It is unlikely that West will declare before lunch tomorrow after they decided against enforcing a follow on despite a substantial first-innings lead. Even if the South bowlers dismiss West’s remaining batsmen cheaply, the task ahead of them is ardous. The signs were ominous from the outset for South, after Parthiv glanced Sreesanth to the boundary off the first ball of West’s second innings. Boundaries were frequently on offer and the West openers scored at an over four-an-over before Wasim Jaffer was given out lbw to Sreesanth off a ball that appeared to be missing leg stump.Rahane took only two balls to show his class, dispatching a length ball to the square-leg boundary with a trademark flick. He then hit Sreesanth for three fours and neither batsman allowed the South bowlers to settle. The pair had added 110 before Parthiv, struggling with cramps after keeping for over 70 overs, retired hurt. His departure upset West’s momentum and Cheteshwar Pujara and Rahane fell in fairly quick succession. Rahane got a faint edge against S Badrinath and was caught down leg side. He fell for 98 and narrowly missed becoming only the second player after Lalchand Rajput to score two hundreds in a Duleep Trophy final. However, he ended a successful domestic season, in which he was the second-highest run-scorer after Jaffer, on a high.Bhavik Thaker dealt some heavy blows in his brief innings of 22 before he edged Sreesanth to Rahul Dravid at first slip. The breakthrough came a little too late. South failed to capitalise on favourable conditions for spin bowling, something West had done successfully in the first innings.West’s reply came after South capitulated against spin, S Badrinath’s 100 proving the only notable contribution. Powar and Pawar bowled well in tandem with fielders around the bat. Powar got Yadav to flick one straight to Kedar Jadhav at forward short-leg but he was lucky to get R Ashwin given out caught at silly point, though replays didn’t conclusively detect an inside edge onto his pads.Only Badrinath managed to play the spinners, using his feet to force the ball past the infield, though many shots fetched only singles. His only false stroke was a front-foot slash off Dhawal Kulkarni which just cleared second slip. Badrinath greeted Abhishek Nayar with a cheeky whip high over square leg and brought up his century with a clubbed four down the ground off the same bowler. The difference between the two sides was in the partnerships – West had four in excess of fifty in their first innings, while South had none. The highest South could manage was 43- for the second and eighth wickets – leaving a lot of responsibility on their captain. Support from the other end wasn’t forthcoming though, and South’s batsmen will need to rectify that shortcoming in order to prevent West from claiming the trophy.

Hasenhuttl must axe Elyounoussi v Blades

Southampton travel to face Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night as they attempt to progress to the fourth round of the competition.

The Saints head into the match on a five-game unbeaten run, having drawn their last four Premier League games as well as recording an 8-0 win against Newport County in the cup competition.

Ralph Hasenhuttl could look to rotate his side to give the fringe players in the squad a chance to earn a place in the starting XI in the league at the weekend against Wolves. One man who he needs to axe in order to see what another player could do in his position is winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The Norwegian has been inconsistent in the Premier League for the Saints this season and it could be time for him to drop out and allow another winger to start. He has shown some signs of promise but there have also been some worrying moments from the forward.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton labeled Elyounoussi as a disappointment last season, as he flattered to deceive on the pitch during a loan spell at Parkhead.

The 48-year-old said: “With Elyounoussi I think he’s flattered to deceive at times. His goal tally for club and country surprises me a little bit, but he hasn’t been consistent enough and I think he’s been a disappointment if I’m honest.

“Celtic getting him back was a big deal. I was really excited about that link-up between Elyounoussi and Edouard at the start of the season because in the previous season there were signs in patches that their understanding was really exceptional.”

The £10.8m-rated Saints dud has followed a similar pattern early on this season. In three Premier League starts, the 27-year-old has scored once and provided zero assists, whilst creating 1.3 chances per game. This is a respectable return and shows that he can find the back of the net whilst opening up chances for his teammates, although they are yet to reward him with an assist for his efforts as of yet.

However, it is the other side of the game where he has struggled. As per SofaScore, he has been dribbled past 1.7 times per match and lost 62% of his duels over the course of the three games. He has also lost possession 12 times per match, completing 77% of his passes overall.

This shows that he has not stood up to the physical battle of the Premier League, whilst he has also been wasteful with the ball at his feet. Therefore, Hasenhuttl should axe him tonight to see what the likes of Armando Broja and Nathan Tella could do in his position, as Elyounoussi has already his chance in the top flight and failed to grasp it with both hands.

Rahane and Jaffer seal Mumbai win

Mumbai maintained their supremacy, thrashing Punjab by nine wickets in their final match of the group stage

Mumbai maintained their supremacy, thrashing Punjab by nine wickets in their final match of the group stage. Ajinkya Rahane and Wasim Jaffer swiftly overhauled the target of 149 before the stroke of lunch on the final day. Rahane added an unbeaten 82, to go along with his first-innings 80, and combined well with his captain as the undefeated 130-run second-wicket partnership extinguished Punjab’s hopes.Punjab had offered stiff resistance in the final two sessions the previous day, with Uday Kaul’s century and attacking knocks by Ankur Kakkar (58) and Chandan Madan (32) impeding Mumbai’s march. However, within the first half an hour on day four, the visitors folded, leaving Kaul stranded on 136.Mumbai’s opening pair of Jaffer and Vinayak Samant then started aggressively. The first scoring shot was a boundary – a steer by Samant past gully off Gagandeep Singh. Two overs later, against the same bowler, Samant guided a short and wide delivery to the point boundary, two deliveries after a Chinese cut had evaded the stumps.Jaffer started off on a scratchy note, unable to get behind the line, but played his first confident stroke, a firm on-drive past mid-on for a four off Gagandeep. Punjab’s fleeting moment of joy arrived when Amanpreet Singh trapped Samant leg-before as he tried to play across, but they must have braced themselves at the sight of Rahane, the highest run-getter this season in the tournament.Rahane opened his account with a back-foot punch for four off Gagandeep, and then skimmed a leg glance to the boundary in the same over. In the next over, against Amanpreet, Jaffer shifted gears with three fours: the first, a classic front-foot drive past the straight boundary followed two balls later with a whipped glance past fine leg, and finally an on-drive in front of square.Even the spin combination of Varun Khanna and Sarabjit Ladda failed to put brakes as the runs poured mostly in boundaries. Watching the Mumbai duo dish out their brilliance, one could easily feel they were competing against each other: if Jaffer drove through extra cover off Ladda on the back foot, Rahane hit consecutive fours off Khanna. For Punjab though, this mini-battle was hurting them as the pair soon brought up their respective fifties. Two overs before lunch Mumbai were on the cusp of victory with 22 runs needed and clearly they did not intend to take the break. Rahane drove Kakkar past the stranded fielders at short cover and cover, followed by consecutive fours, both cut shots, and Mumbai needed just eight off the final over from Ladda. Another Rahane boundary meant just one run was needed and both captains decided to prolong play. Rahane deservingly hit the winning stroke, a square drive that rushed past cover.Jaffer was all praise for Rahane, and believed he was ready for the No.3 position in the Indian Test team. “He has proved he can counter-attack as well as stay put according to the situation and he is definitely a contender for the No. 3 slot.”Despite entering the knock-out stage, Jaffer pointed out that there was still work to do, particularly in the bowling department, which has struggled even with the likes of Dhawal Kulkarni, one the best bowlers this season, among their ranks. “The knock-outs is a new phase and the intensity will be key. When there is nothing much happening, the bowlers need to keep it simple instead of giving easy runs.”Mumbai finished the league campaign as group leaders with the maximum number of outright wins (five), and will now meet Himachal Pradesh in the quarter-finals in Ahmedabad starting on December 26.

Southampton must drop Djenepo vs Man City

Southampton face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend as they go in search of their first win of the Premier League campaign.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints have picked up three draws and one defeat from their opening four Premier League matches. After losing to Everton on the opening day, the Saints managed draws against Manchester United, Newcastle and most recently West Ham.

What could the Austrian do to give his side the best chance of coming away with their first win? Making some changes to the starting XI could be one way to go about it, and in Moussa Djenepo, there has been one player in particular who has failed to make the most of his opportunities this season.

The winger has started all four of Southampton’s league matches this term and averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.28. Only Nathan Tella, who has played 10 top-flight minutes, has a lower rating than the Mali international, highlighting how much he has struggled recently.

Djenepo has failed to make an impact defensively or offensively in his four starts, struggling at both ends of the pitch for the Saints. The £34k-per-week dud has failed to produce a single goal or assist in the league this season, whilst only creating 0.8 chances per game and completing 40% of his attempted dribbles with the ball. He has also missed one ‘big chance’, showing that he has not had the quality in the final third to punish Premier League opposition.

Defensively, he has been too lightweight. As per SofaScore, Djenepo has lost 63% of his total duels against opponents, whilst he has also been dribbled past as often as he has won possession back (0.5) per game. This shows that he has not been strong enough to win individual battles against opponents, handing the advantage to the other team.

He also lost possession of the ball a whopping 61 times in four games, 15.3 times per match, and has completed a disappointing 70% of his passes. All told, he has not offered enough defensively, offensively or in transition to suggest that he deserves to keep his place in the starting XI.

Hasenhuttl needs to ruthlessly axe him from the team and offer another player a chance, as Djenepo is not providing the goods at this moment in time. Dropping him also could motivate the 23-year-old to work harder in training and improve when he gets his next opportunity to play.

Somerset announce record profit

Somerset has announced a record-breaking profit of £4.4m for the year ending September 30, 2008. The principle cause for this significant rise is the club’s real estate deals which helped boost their income before the slump in the property market

Somerset have announced a record-breaking profit of £4.4 million for the year ending September 30, 2008. The principle cause for this significant rise is the club’s real estate deals which helped boost their income before the slump in the property market.”It has been a very demanding few years but over recent months the progress made by the club has emerged for all to see,” said chief executive, Richard Gould. “The benefits will be long-lasting, and having completed many of our financial and real estate deals before the worst of the recession hit, we are strategically ahead of many of our competitors.”The club have begun major developmental works, which includes the building of 65 apartments, a restaurant complex, 3000 more seats and a new pavilion that boasts a hydrotherapy pool. Like many of England’s counties who aren’t afforded the huge financial benefits of staging a Test, Somerset have to look elsewhere to swell their coffers.”I am delighted to see our club thriving in all areas,” chairman Andy Nash told the club’s website. “In the past other sports clubs have shied away from the supporters-based ownership model that we enjoy in favour of relying on private ownership.”However, there is no doubt that by introducing a professional management system that can cope with the demands of business, and take advantage of opportunities which arise, Somerset can be viewed as an exemplar of how sports clubs can remain stable and sustainable, even when challenging for top honours in fiercely competitive environments.”

Kamara stole the show for Rangers

Rangers extended their unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions as they beat St Johnstone in a tense match on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard’s side went 1-0 down just after half-time as Filip Helander was caught out from a long ball and Michael O’Halloran made the most of it to fire the ball into the back of the net.

A cooly dispatched penalty, won by Ryan Kent, from Kemar Roofe soon saw Rangers level the scores. Captain James Tavernier, returning to the side, then secured the three points with a stunning effort from distance in the 79th minute.

Despite Kent, Tavernier and Roofe being heavily involved in the goals, another player stole the show with his performance – Glen Kamara.

The Finland international produced an excellent display in the middle of the pitch as he helped to keep Rangers on the front foot throughout the match. He was able to win possession back and dictate play in the engine room, allowing the Gers to control the ball and ultimately turn that 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win.

Defensively, Kamara was excellent. Per SofaScore, he won an impressive 82% of his duels on the pitch as he came out on top in five of his six ground battles and won three of his four aerial contests. He also made two clearances, one tackle and an interception.

This shows that he was active in winning the ball back for his side and competing in physical battles against the St Johnstone midfield. By winning the vast majority of his duels, he kept Rangers in possession and that allowed Gerrard’s side to dominate the ball and continually create the chances needed to get back into the game.

Offensively and in transition, Kamara also excelled. Per SofaScore, he had 73 touches of the ball in midfield – more than Steven Davis and Joe Aribo – whilst completing 85% of his passes and both of his attempted dribbles – also being fouled twice.

These statistics highlight his control of the match in possession. He was running the show in midfield by dictating the play and allowing the likes of Tavernier, Kent and Roofe to then work their magic in the final third.

Gerrard will surely be delighted with the 25-year-old’s display and will be hoping that he can keep it going for the rest of the campaign.

AND in other news, Gerrard must seal Rangers deal for “instrumental” maestro, he won’t cost a penny…
