Sreesanth, the India fast bowler, has returned to competitive cricket after more than a year, following a toe injury, and is keen to make the step up from club cricket to the first-class level at the earliest

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Dec-2012Sreesanth, the India fast bowler, has returned to competitive cricket after more than a year out due to a toe injury, and is keen to make the step up from club cricket to the first-class level at the earliest. Sreesanth played two club matches in Kochi over the last week and tweeted that his “rhythm is great and [he is] getting good pace … Will join the Kerala Ranji side soon.”Sreesanth had started the Ranji season last year but pulled out after just one match to continue his rehabilitation for the toe injury. At that time, he opted against surgery and went for Ayurvedic treatment instead. He had hoped to be fit in time for India’s CB series in Australia earlier this year, and had said at the end of February that he was looking forward to playing again in three weeks. He then travelled with his IPL franchise, Rajasthan Royals, but in May he confirmed that he would be out for at least five months after needing two surgeries on his toes.Sreesanth has 87 wickets from 27 Tests. He last played international cricket during India’s tour of England in 2011, in which he was part of the team for three out of four Tests.

Arthur attacks critics of rotation

Australia’s coach Mickey Arthur has rounded on critics of the national team’s management of fast bowlers

Australia’s coach Mickey Arthur has rounded on critics of the national team’s management of fast bowlers, taking particularly sharp aim at the contention that the selection panel is letting sports science make its decisions regarding who to choose. In a prolonged rebuttal of public and media views that there is confusion if not chaos around Australian team selection, Arthur revealed that a major factor behind Mitchell Starc’s withdrawal from the Boxing Day Test team was to avoid the flaring of a long-term ankle problem that will eventually require surgery and an extended lay-off from the game.He also confirmed that Michael Clarke, Matthew Wade and David Warner would return to the ODI team for the second phase of matches in Brisbane and Sydney on Friday and Sunday, and clarified that Usman Khawaja was dropped for Steve Smith under a pre-defined plan to give each batsman one game. Australia have been widely criticised by former players and sections of the public for fielding a “B-team” in the first two matches of the series, but Arthur went to considerable lengths to explain the intricacies of selection.”We’re very clear on who the best team is and who the best attack is,” Arthur said following Australia’s defeat in the second ODI in Adelaide. “I’ve been really annoyed and frustrated by some of the articles that have been going around. For me it’s common sense. Common sense prevails when we pick teams. We certainly don’t pick teams not to win any cricket games for Australia. Every time we pick a team we’re giving guys opportunities and picking what we think is the best side possible to go out and do the job and win.”It’s either very naive or just a little bit stubborn that people don’t understand what we’re doing. The example I’ve used is Black Caviar. When he runs a horse race, if they don’t feel he’s 100% right they don’t release him. We’ve done that with our bowlers, and over the year we’ve had three examples of quick bowlers basically rested, and that is all.”Ryan Harris in the West Indies, Mitchell Starc on Boxing Day and Peter Siddle at Perth. That’s the only time we have rested quick bowlers, and we’ve done that simply because we think they’re at risk. We want to play our guys all the time. With the amount of cricket we play these day’s it is impossible to keep the guys on the park in every single game. So we would not have a quick bowler at risk.”Starc’s absence from the Boxing Day Test team was a particular sore point, Starc himself stating his frustration at not being allowed to follow-up his match-clinching five wickets on the final day of the Hobart Test by playing on the biggest day of the Australian cricket calendar. But Arthur made it clear that there were more factors at play than a simple question of Starc’s workload.”If you take Mitchell Starc over the Boxing Day Test match, the information we’d got was that he was at risk. Then it’s up to us,” Arthur said. “The constant thought that sports scientists are picking the team is so far off the mark that it’s frightening. They give us information, the information is then left up to us to make that decision. Michael, myself and the selector on duty make the decision based on the information we’re given. When we get that information we will see if it holds up and if we think it’s not worth the risk.”Mitchell Starc plays three forms of the game. He had an ankle impingement, he’s got spurs that are going to require an operation at some stage. We’re hoping that will be a year down the line, but at some stage that is going to give in. There was no point in us playing him in a Boxing Day Test match and risk losing him for the one-day series and then for a tour of India. That would’ve been plain stupid.”Australia are facing one of the most demanding schedules ever set before an international team in 2013, with a four-Test tour of India to be followed by the Champions Trophy and then 10 consecutive Ashes Test matches in England and Australia. Arthur said the decisions made to withdraw fast bowlers or other players from the firing line for set periods reflected the calendar ahead.”Whenever we make those decisions, we make those decisions with a lot of thought into how we’re going to use our quick bowler and when we’re going to use him,” Arthur said. “I really want to get that out and put that on record, because I’m sick and tired of talking about it, and I’m certainly sick and tired of seeing some of the articles that are going around in the media at the moment.”A hamstring strain to Brad Haddin, meanwhile, has simplified the circumstances of Wade’s return to the squad as the national selectors prepare to strengthen their team for the next brace of matches in Brisbane and Sydney. That injury may now cause the selectors something of a headache should they still want to take Haddin on the India Test tour in early February. But for now it will allow Wade to return swiftly and smoothly to the ODI squad alongside other members of the Test team that were given a week’s rest following their exertions against South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Thirimanne shows the future is not bleak

Not many of the 26,000 at the SCG knew Lahiru Thirimanne upon his arrival at the crease, yet they rose to give him a warm ovation when he departed short of the three-figure score

From all the innings, shots, wickets and catches Mahela Jayawardene oversawas captain of Sri Lanka in 2012, his favourite moment was an instance ofexceptional gall from Lahiru Thirimanne. Sri Lanka were five runs short of victory in Pallekele in their first Super Eights match of the World Twenty20, but they only had two balls remaining, with Tim Southee at thebowling crease, delivering one of the spells of the tournament. Thirimanne, fresh from the dugout, had not managed a convincing stroke from either ofthe balls he had faced, yet on the penultimate delivery of Sri Lanka’sinnings, he knelt and played a scoop he had never tried before ininternational cricket, sending Southee’s yorker over short fine leg forfour, and the stadium into raptures.”For Lahiru to have the courage to do that and back himself was fantastic,”Jayawardene said months later, while reflecting on the year’s events. “Ithink among the young group, he has that mindset to handle those reallytough situations.” Courage, self-belief, fortitude. They are the samevirtues that fashioned Thirimanne’s 91 in Sydney, and provided the backboneof Sri Lanka’s first innings after the team had shown little of the abovewith the bat in their last Test. Not many of the 26,000 at the SCG knew Thirimanne upon his arrival at thecrease, and until five days before the match, he had no idea he would beplaying a New Year Test either. Yet, when he departed short of thethree-figure score he deserved, the stadium rose to give him a warmovation. They only need to think back to last year’s Test to recall knocksthat dwarf Thirimanne’s 91 in heft, skill and allure, but there was much toenjoy about the steel in his defense and the defiance in his strokes, andthey did not withhold their appreciation. Perhaps the crowd had also heardon their earpiece radios by then, that Thirimanne had stepped off a planeonly 36 hours before his innings began. If Thirimanne was not nervous when he arrived at the crease, the lbw shoutand referral off his first ball certainly would have put him on edge. “Ithought that was out,” he said at the end of the day, but he did not allowthat rattling introduction detract from focus or technique. He leftpositively and even early in his innings, his scoring strokes were assured. As he grew more accustomed to the pace of the pitch, he drove the quicks onthe front foot with the same comfort with which he dispatched Nathan Lyonthrough the offside, leaning back. Australia cannot have had long toanalyse footage of Thirimanne to deduct a plan of attack, but if there areglaring vulnerabilities in his game, he did well to hide them. Few SriLankan batsmen graduate from the domestic system without a major weaknessthat must be ironed out at the top level.Thirimanne had replaced Kumar Sangakkara, and the bent-knee cover drive he wielded with increasing command throughout the day bore strong parallels to Sangakkara’s signature stroke, only it was less clean. Like Thirimanne, Sangakkara had a limited range of strokes once, but a strong mind andtireless work ethic transformed him into one of the greats of the moderngame. It is encouraging that Thirimanne already seems to possess an irontemperament, but he would do well to emulate the hunger and commitmentSangakkara has ridden to acclaim, if he is to make good on the potentialhis innings made plain. Before receiving the call from Sri Lanka’s selectors, Thirimanne’s lastmatch was at the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo, where even the likesof Mitchell Johnson might find getting the ball above chest height afruitless pursuit. The SCG may be the least daunting Australian venue forSri Lanka, but the bounce and carry in the pitch on day one is a worldremoved from the featherbed on which he scratched out a limited overshalf-century a week ago, and he has had just one training session toadjust to batting in conditions that have not flattered his teammates inthe first two Tests. Uncluttered by the baggage of the Melbourne massacreperhaps, Thirimanne relied on resilience to compensate for unfamiliarity.”It was a bit difficult to adjust, but it’s all about mindset,” he said.”You have to adapt to any conditions quickly if you want to playinternational cricket. Whether we are playing ODIs or Test we have to getour mindset right. I adapted really well today. I am disappointed to havemissed a hundred, but I’m happy with my performance.”Just as Rangana Herath has shown Sri Lanka there is life after MuttiahMuralitharan, there are signs from the likes of Thirimanne and DineshChandimal that Sri Lanka can be hopeful about their batting beyond thecareers of the four ageing men who have begun winding down their careers. On day one in Sydney, a 23-year-old propelled Sri Lanka towardsrespectability with spunk and composure. The visitors may still be placedpoorly in the match, with a second-string pace attack now tasked withreining Australia in, but fans at home will take even more pleasure inThirimanne’s innings than the SCG crowd that witnessed it, becausesuddenly, the future does not look so bleak.

Clarke backs Howard … and Warne

Michael Clarke performed a feat of rare diplomacy on the eve of his side’s ODI series against the West Indies as he managed to balance his friendship with Shane Warne, and his fealty to Cricket Australia’s high performance chief Pat Howard

Daniel Brettig31-Jan-2013

Michael Clarke didn’t exactly endorse his old friend Shane Warne’s views on Australian cricket, but stated this in a diplomatic manner•AFP

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke performed a feat of rare diplomacy on the eve of his side’s ODI series against the West Indies as he simultaneously managed to balance his friendship with Shane Warne, and his fealty to Cricket Australia’s high performance chief Pat Howard.Of those who have reacted to Warne’s parallel universe for Australian cricket in the past 24 hours, Clarke’s response was the one caught in the most invidious position. He is both a part of the selection panel that advocates concepts Warne cannot stomach, and also an eager sponge for all the cricket knowledge the former Test leg spinner and his own mentor Ian Chappell can provide.Caught between Warne and Howard, Clarke trod a narrow path down the middle, stating the former was entitled to his opinion and would be listened to by those in power, but also reiterating his belief that the latter was doing a strong job in the face of much criticism from those unwilling to watch the high-end of the game be managed by a former rugby international.”Warnie and I are great friends and we always will be,” Clarke said in Perth. “Everybody’s entitled to their opinion, and he’s certainly earned the right to voice his opinion on Australian cricket. I speak to Warnie often about things I can do personally to improve my game. Not only has he been a great friend, but he’s a mentor to me as well.”Pat Howard has been doing a fantastic job. A lot of people will take a lot of notice of what Warnie has to say. But people have jobs and are trying to do that job to the best of their ability. And that’s all we can do. I’m a part of that as well. The people who make the decisions on who gets employed, they’ll definitely take notice. They’ll read what Warnie had to say. And I’m sure they’ll do whatever they have to do.”Among other targets of Warne’s push for change in the Australian game, the national selector John Inverarity declined to comment, other than to say he was happy he lived in a country granted a free press and unfettered expression of ideas. Warne had suggested Inverarity be replaced by his fellow selector and friend Rod Marsh. The national coach Mickey Arthur, who Warne argued should be replaced by the former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, was less diplomatic in his assessment: taking issue with Warne’s clear preference for the simpler ways of the past – namely the 1970s when his mentor Chappell led a team of self-reliant and contrasting characters.”He’s living in a dream world to be honest,” Arthur told 6PR Radio in Perth. “It’s just not possible [to always pick your best team] with the amount of time the players have at their disposal. He’s living in a dream world and clearly he’s not up with the times.”We don’t sit there and rotate players and think, ‘he is going to play here and he is going to play here and there’. What we do, is we manage our players. So it’s about player management. If there is a player who is not 100 percent fit, we don’t take the risk with him. We want guys that are going out on the field 100 percent fine and ready to go all of the time.”Peter Siddle, Warne’s fellow Victorian and one of the players referred to as part of a strong core of the current Test team, offered the following view: “That’s just Warnie being Warnie. Warnie has done that when he played. He just likes the limelight.”
