Clarke's a thinking captain, says Hussey

Michael Hussey couldn’t believe that Michael Clarke was giving him a bowl, but, according to him, there was method to his captain’s madness

No one in Pallekele was more surprised to see Michael Hussey handed the ball than the man himself. On a hunch from Australia’s captain Michael Clarke, Hussey was brought on to disrupt a budding partnership between Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews, and in three balls’ time he had enticed Sangakkara to push a catch to short extra cover. Job done, Hussey sauntered back to his position at gully, where he had earlier held a blinding catch to remove Mahela Jayawardene.Hussey returned neat figures of 1-1-0-1 and joked at the end of the day that he was more than happy to bowl only the one over because he “was starting to stiffen up already”. According to him, there was method to Clarke’s madness.”I couldn’t believe Michael Clarke was going to give me a bowl,” Hussey said. “He did sort of say he wouldn’t mind giving me a couple of overs, because with a little less pace they [Sri Lanka] might chip one out to cover and, obviously, he was spot on. It wasn’t just about ‘let’s just give anyone a go’, it was about trying to bowl a little slower. The pitch was slow and it was a bit hard to drive. He’s certainly a thinking captain and yeah, he had the golden hand today.”It was a very valuable wicket for the team. I’ll take it any day of the week because he’s [Sangakkara] one of the best players in the world and they had a pretty good partnership going. To be able to break that and give the guys a chance with the ball reversing a little was very fortuitous I think.”Hussey’s contribution summed up a day when Australia’s skill and instinct was matched only by Sri Lanka’s underachievement. Under such circumstances it is little wonder that the visitors are well and truly on the way towards a first series victory anywhere since defeating New Zealand early in 2010.As for the catch, Hussey rated it one of his most significant snares, removing the batsman who had held up Australia’s push for victory in Galle with a masterly 105. “It’s pretty special. Definitely, was a great reaction from the team.”It’s always great to hang on to a spectacular catch but, more importantly, it was the wicket of Jayawardene who was a big thorn in our side down in Galle. I guess I was pretty lucky today in that the two wickets that were probably the key were in my hands.”Australia’s domination of Sri Lanka’s batsmen has been almost total. Ryan Harris and Trent Copeland were precision personified with the new ball, while Nathan Lyon again bowled with courage and variety to the middle order. The bowlers, Hussey said, deserved a lot of credit for his side’s success.”I think it’s a real testament to the way the bowlers have gone about their work,” he said. “They’ve been very patient. The surface out there is good. Despite it being a bit slow, making it hard to get the timing right, it’s only as good as the bowlers bowl. If they bowl with width or err in length, you’ll be able to score quite quickly out there. But our bowlers were very disciplined for long periods of time.”They’re very clear in their minds about what they’re trying to do and we’ve proven we can do it now for the first one and a half Test matches. But we’ve got to maintain that standard over longer periods of time if are to get back to where we want to be in the standings.”

Floodlit Test could be set for next year

Test cricket could see its first day/night fixture as soon as January next year after the MCC said it was in discussions with Cricket New Zealand

Test cricket could see its first day/night fixture as soon as January next year after the MCC said it was in discussions with New Zealand Cricket.Zimbabwe are touring New Zealand and the Test match at Napier could be played under lights with a pink ball if trials set for October prove successful. The ECB announced that the Championship game between Kent and Glamorgan next week will be a day/night encounter and the MCC has ambitious plans.”I’m currently in discussions with cricket New Zealand, hoping to organise a first-class match under lights with a pink ball between MCC and Northern Districts at the end of October in Hamilton,” MCC director of cricket John Stephenson told ESPNcricinfo. “If that happens and it goes well and if NZC and ICC are all happy we’re hoping that might be the precursor to New Zealand playing Zimbabwe in a Test match under lights at the end of January.”The MCC have been central in pushing day/night first-class cricket. With Test crowds in large parts of the world dwindling, finding new ways to draw people to grounds is essential. Floodlit games would allow people to come in after work and see half a day’s play and it’s hoped that may help increase spectator turnout. For Stephenson, it is crowd numbers that is the most important gauge of success in the game at Canterbury. “If it helps stimulate attendances for what is in effect a dead game it would be a success. That’s really the be all and end all.”We’ve had two very good games in Abu Dhabi where the players adapted and there are periods of the game where, like in any form of cricket, you have to adapt. I’m just hoping the players will enjoy playing in a different format and I hope they see the ball well. It is always a danger with something new that if something goes wrong or someone drops a catch or misses a straight one, the colour of the ball will be blamed. But that is something that happens in any form of cricket, with a dark red ball even, sometimes you don’t pick it up or miss a straight one.”Though floodlit first-class cricket could prove a crowd-puller in other parts of the world, England, especially in mid-September, is less suited to it. Not only will spectators have to brave the cold but evening dew could also come into play.”The worry is at Canterbury in mid-September it won’t be ideal in terms of conditions,” said Stephenson. “But we pray for decent weather and no dew and hopefully we’ll get an idea of how it works.Dave Richardson, the ICC general manager of cricket, said at the ICC’s cricket committee meeting in May that dew was a major factor to consider in day-night games but Stephenson is hopeful that the Kent-Glamorgan fixture won’t sway New Zealand Cricket too much if conditions prove poor.”You never know what the weather is going to be like,” he said. “Obviously they’ll [NZC] have a look at what goes on at Canterbury next week but hopefully that won’t stop them doing it.”

New South Wales face must-win game

ESPNcricinfo previews the CLT20 match between Chennai Super Kings and New South Wales

Big PictureGoing into the last Group A match, the equation is simple for New South Wales, who have four points. Win, and they are through to the semi-finals of the Champions League T20 as the group’s toppers. If they lose, they are out.Super Kings, who are on two points, will need Trinidad & Tobago to beat Cape Cobras in the first match of the day. If T&T win, Super Kings can make the semi-final, so long as they register a big enough win to go ahead of NSW and T&T (whose net run-rates are presently marginally superior to Super Kings’) on net run-rate. If the match is washed out – scattered thunderstorms are forecast – Super Kings will not progress, while NSW will need T&T to beat Cape Cobras. The advantage both sides enjoy, as MS Dhoni pointed out after the defeat to T&T, is they are playing the last game in their group. Based on the Cobras-T&T result, these teams will know exactly what they need to do to progress. If Cobras win, however, the Super Kings are out before the game begins, and only NSW can progress.NSW should be in a better frame of mind for this make-or-break match than Super Kings. They took advantage of the low, slow pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, keeping Mumbai Indians to 100, before overcoming a top-order wobble to chase the target on the difficult track. Super Kings, meanwhile, allowed T&T’s Kevon Cooper to produce a late blitz and were then woeful in the chase, albeit against a bowling attack that was well-suited to the conditions.Watch out for …It’s been a tough few months for MS Dhoni. Things have gone quickly downhill for him following India’s 2011 World Cup win and Super Kings’ successful defence of their IPL title. It was hard to relate the batsman who struck a commanding six to win the World Cup to the one who struggled to 7 off 22 balls, albeit on a very different pitch, against T&T. Dhoni will be eager to put to rest at least some of the questions arising on his form and fitness, especially ahead of a busy international season.Left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe seemed to enjoy bowling on the Chepauk track against Mumbai Indians, claiming 2 for 18 in his four overs. He bowled Andrew Symonds and got R Sathish, who had settled in, to hole out. With more of the same slowness and lowness guaranteed to be on offer against Super Kings, O’Keefe could prove crucial to NSW’s chances.Team newsSuper Kings’ Shadab Jakati was hit on the finger on Sunday, when Lendl Simmons whacked the ball back at him in his follow-through. Later, during a television interview, Jakati said the finger was a bit swollen. If he is unable to play, offspinner Suraj Randiv could get a game, most probably replacing Albie Morkel as the fourth foreign player in the XI. Even otherwise, the nature of the Chepauk track might prompt playing three spinners.NSW’s three-pronged pace attack – Stuart Clark, Patrick Cummins and Mitchell Starc – have all put in decent performances. Given the conditions and Super Kings’ previous performance, though, Simon Katich will have to decide if it’s worth playing the extra spinner, to back up O’Keefe and Steven Smith. Nathan Hauritz is NSW’s third spinning option, but he was quite expensive in the one match he played in the tournament.Stats and triviaOnly three New South Wales batsmen – David Warner, Shane Watson and Daniel Smith – have strike-rates above 100 in the tournament. Of these, only Warner has a strike-rate above 105. Apart from Michael Hussey, none of the Chennai Super Kings batsmen have gone past 50 runs in the tournament so far. Quotes”We couldn’t read which way he [Sunil Narine] was spinning the ball, because we haven’t played him before. Sometimes, it’s tough to play someone we haven’t faced.”
“That’s the beauty of our team. Hopefully, as we go through the tournament, guys will [continue to] put their hands up and get the job done.”

Didn't apply ourselves in first innings – Barath

Adrian Barath says West Indies’ improved batting performance in the second innings shows it was just a lack of application that let them down first time around

S Aga16-Nov-2011

After subsiding meekly in the first innings, West Indies dipped in to the Bob Marley catalogue to get up and stand up the second time, progressing to 195 for 3, still 283 in arrears, by stumps. Adrian Barath and Kirk Edwards added 93 for the second wicket, preventing any repeat of the morning collapse that saw West Indies skittled out before lunch for just 153.”We did not bat as well as we should have in the first innings,” Barath said afterwards. “Basically we learnt from our mistakes in the first innings and we applied ourselves a bit more. It shows that as a team we are capable of playing spin well. I think it was just a matter of application in the first innings. The conditions were a bit difficult for the openers to bat in.”Barath said West Indies’ cause wasn’t helped by an early start after play had ended 50 minutes early on the second day. “The game starting at 8.30am, it’s probably the first time I have ever seen that. I think it was obviously difficult for us batting that early in the morning. Usually, the warm-up starts at 8.30 and we were facing the first ball at that time. It was something new for us.”He didn’t play the first Test and failed in the first innings here, and there was more than a hint of disappointment at the manner in which he was dismissed for 62 so soon after tea. “I went out there and tried my best to get West Indies off to a good start. Our objective was to go there and just apply ourselves once again. I have been away from international cricket for probably around a month. So it was important for me to get back in the groove. I am thankful for getting a half-century but I think I should have carried on and got a big one.”Barath became the youngest West Indies player to score a century in 2009 – beating George Headley’s record – when he hit a stroke-filled 104 in an innings defeat at the Gabba. Things haven’t been quite as easy since.”That’s something I have been trying to cope with in the past year or so where I have had good starts. Obviously it’s a very frustrating period in my career after just coming into the team and getting a century on debut and not playing as consistently as I should have after that.”The learning process has been helped by the presence of Desmond Haynes – one half of West Indies’ legendary opening partnership – as batting coach. “It is a privilege to have someone like Desmond Haynes as part of our team,” Barath said. “Being an opening batsman it is great for me because he has the experience of playing on different pitches around the world against different opposition. It’s obviously a work in progress and there is nothing he could do overnight as a batting coach.”Part of Haynes’ mandate has to be to change the mindset of the West Indies batsmen, especially against spin on the slow and low pitches of the subcontinent. Barath said Haynes has told them to be positive against spin. “He was the sort of guy that took the bowlers on. He definitely dominated some of the best bowlers in the world. He always tells us that we should be positive as batsmen and not allow bowlers to get on top of us. It’s all in the mind.”On the Eden Gardens pitch, chances of saving the game rest largely on Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the one individual in the batting line-up with more than 50 Test caps to his name. “He is the key player for us tomorrow. He can bat through tomorrow and make it difficult for the India bowlers and take the game into the fifth day and make them bat again. He looks very determined and he is eyeing 10,000 Test runs.”It’s important to make India bat again. It will be important tomorrow morning for [Darren] Bravo and Chanderpaul to continue. I think they just need to continue batting as long as possible and come back on the fifth day.”One man they’ll have to see off to accomplish that task is Umesh Yadav, who has impressed with his wholehearted attitude and bustling pace. “I think he’s bowling 90 miles an hour,” Barath, who fell to him in the first innings, said. “Any bowler who can bowl at that speed is special. There are not many around who bowl at that speed. He has what it takes, and these pitches can help him develop as a player.”After a frustrating period, Barath too is eyeing the next level.
