PCB asks ICC to 'investigate' Sutherland comments

The PCB has taken umbrage at remarks made by Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland about the Justice Qayyum commission on matchfixing and asked the ICC to “investigate” the comments. In a recent story on corruption in cricket in the , Sutherland said that the spot-fixing scandal of last summer, after which three Pakistani players were banned for five years, might not have happened had the PCB acted properly in the aftermath of the Qayyum commission, whose recommendations were released in 2000.”Ask yourself whether Pakistan Cricket Board actually went through and implemented those recommendations,” Sutherland said. “Well, I can’t say for sure but I would have big question marks about whether those things would have happened last year if those recommendations had been fully implemented,” said Sutherland. The statement has irked current and former officials in Pakistan alike. “We felt it was totally unnecessary to make the remarks,” a senior board official told ESPNcricinfo. “We have sent a letter to the ICC asking them to investigate his statement and come back to us. We have implemented that report in toto and are disappointed that it is being brought up again now when the PCB has done so much to fight corruption and set things right. It was not needed.”Much the same line was taken by Tauqir Zia, the board chairman at the time of the Qayyum commission. “James Sutherland should not give any irresponsible statement in the press as one of the key officials of Cricket Australia,” Zia told . “And as far as the matter is concerned, I believe I took all the measures to ensure 100 per cent implementation of all the recommendations of Justice Qayyum.”Sutherland’s comments are not new and as a CA spokesman confirmed, have “been his position in public discussion for a long while.” In fact, that position appears to be the same one taken by Qayyum himself. Immediately after the spot-fixing scandal emerged last August, Qayyum said the PCB had not been “strong enough” in implementing some recommendations in his report. Incidentally, in 2006, Qayyum had also admitted to ESPNcricinfo that he had been lenient on some of the players because he had a “soft corner” for them.In the report, a number of recommendations were made. The main ones involved banning for life players such as Salim Malik and Ata-ur-Rehman, and fining a host of others, including Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed and Saeed Anwar. Some of these players, such as Akram, were prevented from holding any positions of responsibility in or around the team, as was Mushtaq. The legspinner was an assistant coach of the Pakistan side in 2006-07 when Bob Woolmer was coach and Inzamam the captain, against the recommendations of the report. He is now on the coaching staff of the ECB, with the England team. One of the key recommendations Qayyum complained was not fully implemented was having players declare all their assets publicly at the start of their career and then do so annually thereafter. One board official admitted that this “hadn’t been followed up on in the years after the report” but it had been done since and that, in any case, “it is difficult to make a case of corruption purely from assets coming into an account.”In all, nearly 30 recommendations, some specific to the cases then but a number of longer-term ones as well, were made by the commission which is the report itself], including calls for a tighter code of conduct on players and that an independently-headed Review committee be set up to investigate all cases of possible corruption in the future.

O Allianz Parque apresentará algumas novidades neste ano.

Surrey's batsmen cash in as match meanders

A game that produced 1,000 runs inside eight sessions appears destined to finish as a tame, high-scoring draw after the captains of Surrey and Essex failed to reach any form of run-chase deal in Croydon

A game that produced 1,000 runs inside eight sessions appears destined to finish as a tame, high-scoring draw after the captains of Surrey and Essex failed to reach any form of run-chase deal in Croydon. The Whitgift School pitch, having offered a modicum of assistance to the seamers on the opening two days, flattened sufficiently to allow Surrey – with only one previous 350-plus score to their credit this season – to reach 506 in response to the Essex first innings total of 548.After Surrey had had their fill, England opener Alastair Cook cashed in with his second half-century of the match for Essex and goes into the final day unbeaten on 62 with power to add. All of which will be music to the ears of the selectors ahead of Thursday’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Cardiff.Needing a mammoth 399 simply to avoid the follow-on, Surrey coasted past their target to post maximum batting bonus points courtesy of a season’s best 159 from home skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown. The captain’s ton, coupled with half-centuries from Kevin Pietersen, Zander de Bruyn and a Surrey-best 79 from Gareth Batty, ensured Surrey comfortably avoided the spectre of an innings defeat as they moved with 42 of the Essex total. There was an air of ‘After the Lord Mayor’s Show’ to Friday’s proceedings which, though entertaining, paled in comparison to Graham Napier’s explosive world record-equalling knock with 16 sixes here on day two.Hamilton-Brown, who clipped 28 boundaries in his stay, caught the eye from time-to-time with some crisply timed strokes until he became Surrey’s first casualty of the day nine overs after the resumption. Another 122 runs were required to make Essex bat again when Hamilton- Brown, hurried into an attempted pull shot by Chris Wright’s skiddy bouncer, ballooned the ball off the splice of the bat and gently into the gloves of Essex captain and keeper, James Foster.Foster was soon in action again, gathering a regulation outside edge from the bat of Surrey counterpart Steven Davies as he pushed hesitantly at one from Graham Napier to make it 311 for 6. De Bruyn then joined forces with Batty to frustrate Foster’s side for more than 18 overs in a seventh-wicket stand worth 106. Batty hit out lustily to club 10 boundaries in his 56-ball 50, only to lose his partner in the very next over.To that point De Bruyn had been the embodiment of clinical efficiency. The former Somerset right-hander remained unruffled and compact at the crease in batting two hours 20 minutes for 61 runs and though few of his runs or the 10 boundaries he hit lingered long in the memory, theSouth African at least staved off the ignominy of following on as Surrey reached 400 by lunch.De Bruyn’s dismissal soon after the resumption seemingly followed his first moment of indecision when, in checking an attempted drive against Wright, he picked out Mark Pettini at cover.Batty continued to go for his shots and was 21 shy of a hundred when he chased a wide one from Maurice Chambers to toe-end a third catch to a tumbling Foster. Chris Tremlett clubbed three fours before being caught overhead by Napier marshalling the ropes at long-leg, then Tim Linley went leg before to the very next ball to leave Masters on a hat-trick going intothe second innings.Batting again with only a modest lead, Essex added a fortunate 85 for the first wicket through Cook and Jaik Mickleburgh, both of who might have gone early. Mickleburgh top-edged to long leg to be caught off a Tremlett no ball on one then Stuart Meaker, at deep midwicket, downed a running chance off the bowling of Batty after Mickleburgh had reached eight. Then Cookalmost chipped to mid-off.The luck ended soon after when Mickleburgh pushed at a Pietersen arm-ball to be caught at slip then, in the next over, Pettini fenced one from Tremlett to second slip. Matt Walker and Cook reached stumps without further alarm and will hope to bat a while longer before the side’s shake hands on a probable stalemate draw soon after 5pm on Saturday afternoon.

Longe do ideal ainda.

As duas coisas.

Glamorgan chip away at Surrey

Mark Ramprakash’s milestone of reaching 35,000 first-class runs was overshadowed by Alviro Petersen’s double century

25-May-2011
ScorecardMark Ramprakash’s milestone of reaching 35,000 first-class runs was overshadowed by Alviro Petersen’s double century as Glamorgan ended day two in control of their County Championship clash with Surrey at the Oval.In response to the visitors’ 419, Surrey ended the day 179 runs adrift with four first innings wickets intact having found themselves in trouble at 18 for 2. Jason Roy fell leg before to Chris Ashling, who struck again two overs later when Rory Hamilton-Brown was caught at the third attempt at third slip for 12.But thanks to Ramprakash (67), Surrey recovered to 113 for 3 at tea, having also lost Zander de Bruyn, who became Alex Jones’ maiden first-class scalp when he was caught and bowled off a leading edge.Ramprakash cut Will Owen for four to go 39th in the all-time list of first-class run-makers, overtaking Brian Close and, five balls later, went past the 35,000-mark by despatching Owen to the rope at extra cover. He raised his 69-ball half-century with a cut four off Robert Croft and added 90 in 24 overs in tandem with Steve Davies before driving loosely at Ashling to be bowled via an inside edge for 67. With support from Tom Maynard, Davies then shared another half-century partnership and moved to his own fifty in 94 deliveries. With 11 overs to go, Mark Wallace, leading Glamorgan in the absence of Petersen, who did not take the field after his marathon knock, appeared to be running out of ideas when Davies slashed at Owen and was caught at first slip. The Welshmen were given a further boost when Maynard shouldered arms to Owen in the penultimate over.Earlier, Glamorgan lost their last six wickets for 64 runs to leave their card looking decidedly top-heavy. Tim Linley could have picked up six wickets in the first half hour, but two chances went to ground and another flew at a catchable height in-between second and third slip.In the third over of the day, Maynard pulled off a brilliant catch at third slip to see the back of nightwatchman Owen. Four overs later, Wallace was snapped up at first slip before Croft, who was caught down the leg side, started his 41st birthday with a second ball duck.Resuming on 178, Petersen duly became the fourth Glamorgan batsman to make a double century against Surrey when he cut Chris Jordan for four in the 113th over. It had taken the Glamorgan skipper seven hours 40 minutes, 326 balls and it included 23 fours and six.Just before lunch, Jordan struck twice in the space of three deliveries when he accounted for Dean Cosker, who was caught at first slip, and Petersen (210), with one that nipped back off the seam.

Taylor named Zimbabwe captain

Brendan Taylor has been named as Zimbabwe’s new captain ahead of the team’s return to Tests, taking over from allrounder Elton Chigumbura

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-2011

Brendan Taylor will lead Zimbabwe in their return to Test cricket•Zimbabwe Cricket

Brendan Taylor has been named as Zimbabwe’s new captain ahead of the team’s return to Tests, taking over from allrounder Elton Chigumbura. His first duty as captain will be to lead the team against Australian and South African A sides at home, with their first game against Australia A at Harare Sports Club on June 29.Taylor admitted he was surprised when he heard the news. “Yes I was surprised, but happy at the same time,” Taylor told the . “I know it’s different when you are captain, but I don’t see it affecting my performance.”There had been talk for some time over Chigumbura’s continued captaincy tenure, and ESPNcricinfo learned that he was on the brink of handing in his resignation in April. The following month, Chigumbura denied anything had been settled, saying: “Yes, at one time I contemplated quitting the post but I never officially tendered my resignation.” Now it appears that instead of jumping, he has been pushed. With former captain Tatenda Taibu having made clear his disinterest in a return to the leadership role, Taylor was one of a number of senior players in the running for the position. His sparkling form in recent years will certainly have done him no harm – since his maiden one-day century against Bangladesh in November 2009 he’s averaged 38.96 and hit two further hundreds against quality opposition – and he is one of a handful of current players with Test experience, having played 10 games before Zimbabwe’s suspension in 2006.One thing he doesn’t have a great deal of experience in is captaincy at the top level. He has led his franchise, Mid West Rhinos, on the odd occasion but played under Tatenda Taibu and Tino Mawoyo at Under-19 level before making his national debut, aged just 18, in 2004. Nevertheless, he was noticeably vocal in the field in his short stints as Zimbabwe’s wicketkeeper and despite his run-ins with the cricket authorities in the past is undoubtedly a senior member of the side. One potential hiccup that appears to have been pleasingly side-stepped is the issue of race: Taylor is Zimbabwe’s first white captain since Terry Duffin led the side to the Caribbean in 2006 and, given the acrimonious race relations that led to the rebel saga in 2004, there was a chance that the colour of his skin could be divisive.Time will tell, but such have been the positive developments in Zimbabwean cricket in the last two years, the naming of a white captain on merit should be a non-event. Taylor would only have been appointed with the full approval of the board, and appears to have ZC managing director Ozias Bvute’s backing. “We have watched Taylor develop into a mature, experienced player and we stand fully behind him in his new role,” said Bvute.Though Chigumbura was unwilling to finally relinquish the captaincy, the end of his rein may not be the worst news either for him or the team. He enjoyed some initial successes in the role, leading the team to victories against India and Sri Lanka in a home triangular series, but his own form slipped alarmingly and he averaged 21.06 with the bat and 158.50 with the ball in 20 ODIs as captain.Zimbabwe desperately need a fit and firing Chigumbura in the lower order to give both their batting and bowling extra oomph. Without the added weight of the captaincy he could focus on regaining the form that brought him five characteristically rapid half-centuries and 23 wickets in the year before he took over from Prosper Utseya, and led to a county contract with Northamptonshire in 2010.
