According to UOL Esportes, via Portuguese outlet A Bola, the Toffees are eyeing up a swoop for the Brazilian and have been tracking his progress for a number of years.

The report claims that AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund are also keen on the forward and will compete with Everton in January.

Everton must ensure that they can get a deal over the line for the attacker as he could be “exceptional” for Rafa Benitez in the Premier League.

The £16.2m-rated wizard has shown quality for Benfica in recent years and could bolster the club’s options out wide. He has scored 12 goals and provided 16 assists in 73 games for Benfica and caught the eye with some stunning displays last season.

In the 2020/21 campaign, he averaged an excellent Sofacore rating of 7.10 as he produced seven goals and eight assists in just 24 league starts. Soares created eight ‘big chances’ and averaged 1.3 chances created per game throughout the season, showing off his creativity as a winger.

Andros Townsend (1.9) is the only Everton midfielder and forward averaging more key passes per game this term than Soares did for Benfica. This suggests that he could come in and add to Benitez’s options in the forward line by offering a new threat alongside Townsend and the likes of Demarai Gray and Alex Iwobi.

Fortaleza president Marcelo Paz was previously effusive in his praise of the wide man, saying:

“He is a fantastic, exceptional, very talented player, with great dribbling skills. Of course, he will not be (the second coming of) Ronaldo, because he is Il Fenomeno and there is only one. But I assure you that he is a special player, he has all the qualities to become among the best in the world. And besides being strong he is a serious guy.”

These comments suggest that he has the potential to progress further and improve. At the age of 25, he still has plenty of time on his side and he could arrive at Everton with both the quality to make an immediate impact and the scope to increase his value over time and develop into a top player on the pitch for Benitez.

Wilfried Zaha apologised to his Crystal Palace team-mates after his sending off against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, team-mate Conor Gallagher has revealed.

The 29-year-old was sent off just 37 minutes into the game in north London after two bookable offences. For his second yellow, he was guilty of what sports journalist Josh Bunting called ‘absolute stupidity’ as he shoved Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez to the floor.

The red card only compounded Palace’s misery, coming at the end of a seven-minute spell which had also seen them concede two goals. They went on to lose the game 3-0, unable to offer any real attacking threat, as evidenced by their xG of 0.23.

According to Gallagher (via The South London Press), Zaha ‘said sorry in the changing room’ and the players would now ‘forget about it, move on and focus on the next game’.

أكد المدير الفني للفريق الأول لكرة القدم بنادي ليفربول، يورجن كلوب، أنه ليس قلقًا بشأن تأقلم مهاجمه الجديد، داروين نونيز، بعد انتقاله من بنفيكا وعدم ظهوره بالمستوى المعهود.

انتقل نونيز إلى ليفربول في بداية الموسم الحالي مقابل 75 مليون يورو بالإضافة إلى 25 مليون يورو كحوافز متغيرة ولكن لم ينجح الأوروجوياني في فرض اسمه على تشكيل الريدز.

أحد أهم الأسباب في عدم تكيف نونيز مع ليفربول هي اللغة، فهو لا يجيد التحدث بالإنجليزية حتى الآن وهو ما اعترف الأوروجوياني به بعد مباراة رينجرز بالأمس، في دوري أبطال أوروبا.

وتحدث داروين بكل صراحة في تصريحات لشبكة “TNT Sport” البرازيلية: “عندما يتحدث كلوب في التدريبات أو داخل غرف اللاعبين، لا أفهم شيئًا، هذا ما يصعب علي التأقلم مع ليفربول لكنني اعتقد أنه سيحدث مع مرور الوقت والمباريات”.

واستمر: “بالطبع، أطلب من زملائي في الفريق أن يترجموا لي ما يقوله، لكنني اعتقد أنه واضح جدًا بشأن أسلوبه في الملعب”.

وواصل تصريحاته: “اعتقد أن الشيء المهم هو أن أترك بصمتي مع الفريق، يجب أن أكون هادئًا حتى ولو لم أسجل الأهداف مع ليفربول، لقد مررت بنفس الموقف من قبل ربما يكون غير مريح بعض الشيء، لكن نحن كمهاجمين نعيش على الأهداف”.

وشدد الأوروجوياني: “لكنني هادئ، يدعمني المدرب وزملائي في ليفربول وسأحاول مساعدتهم على تحقيق أهدافهم”.

وعن علاقته مع كلوب: “ربما لا أتحدث معه كثيرًا لأنني لا أتحدث الإنجليزية وهو لا يعرف الإسبانية، لدينا مترجم للغة البرتغالية وهو بيب ليندرز (المدرب المساعد) يفهمني ما أقول، هناك أيضًا فيتور ماتوس”.

واستمر: “المترجمون يقولون لي ما يتحدث عنه كلوب في كل جلسة تدريب وفي المباريات، لأن بدون ذلك سأدخل الملعب دون فهم دوري مع الفريق”.

وتابع: “يطلب منا الظهور بمستوانا المعهود بكل بساطة، ألا نخاف من اللعب، نتحلى بالثقة، عندما نخسر الكرة يريد منا الضغط لاستعادتها”.

وأضاف في النهاية: “كلوب يحاول أن يبقينا في حالة من التركيز، ويطلب منا الاستمتاع وأن يكون كل شيء على طبيعته”.

Shaun Tait and David Warner, two of Australia’s Twenty20 specialists, continued the team’s unbeaten summer by setting up a 38-run thrashing of West Indies in Hobart. Warner provided the early thrills with a brutal batting display before the Man of the Match Tait destroyed West Indies’ top order as Australia’s plans for the ICC World Twenty20 took a step in the right direction.Warner and Shane Watson lit up Bellerive Oval, which was hosting its first night international, by taking Australia to 0 for 83 in the eighth over and some late fireworks from Brad Haddin pushed them to 8 for 179. It was a good but gettable total, until two wickets in Tait’s first over knocked the life out of the chase.Chris Gayle has failed to spark during the limited-overs portion of the summer and that trend continued when he swung wildly at Tait’s fourth delivery and saw his stumps splayed. The next ball was angled across Narsingh Deonarine, caught the edge and was sharply taken by Watson at first slip.Kieron Pollard survived the hat-trick ball and blasted a couple of boundaries before he became the third of Tait’s victims with an edge behind to a wonderful fast delivery that moved away off the seam. In between, Tait had been part of another breakthrough when Lendl Simmons slashed to him at third man off Dirk Nannes and after four overs, West Indies were 4 for 26.Tait and Nannes proved a difficult combination for Pakistan in the Twenty20 earlier this month and if they remain fit could be a lethal new-ball duo at the world tournament. Mitchell Johnson becomes a backup bowler in their presence and he chipped in with two wickets including Dwayne Smith, superbly caught on the boundary by a jumping Steven Smith.Smith repeated it with another on-the-move boundary catch to give Nannes his third wicket after Runako Morton (40) and Denesh Ramdin (44) added some respectability to West Indies’ scorecard. They were composed in a 73-run stand but never got West Indies back in the match.It was a disappointing result after they showed imagination, by opening with two spin bowlers, and fight, as they dragged the run-rate back following the quick start from Warner and Watson. The slow-bowling move paid off as Deonarine and Nikita Miller kept the first two overs to six runs before Warner began to tee off.The openers took an extraordinary 59 off four overs beginning with the fourth and Warner led the charge with several strikes over the off side. A monstrous six over midwicket off Deonarine forced a change of ball and when Kemar Roach finally came on in the sixth over Warner welcomed him with a six smacked over midwicket and a back-away cut over third man.Watson was slower to get going but equally powerful when he did and struck four sixes, stepping back deep into his crease to allow himself to lift the ball. A pair of sixes off Dwayne Smith were especially impressive but Watson was the first to depart when he skied Gayle and was taken by the wicketkeeper Ramdin for 37 off 19 balls.Warner narrowly missed his third Twenty20 international half-century when he chipped a Smith full toss back to the bowler and was out for 49 from 32 deliveries. Australia’s run-rate at the time was around 10 and it quickly receded after both openers left and the wickets began to flow.Gayle, Pollard and Miller – who was extremely good with 2 for 20 – kept things tight and Australia’s middle order might be one area they can work on before the World Twenty20. Michael Clarke continued to struggle in the format and made 12, Travis Birt compiled a nervy 13 and Cameron White was surprisingly stodgy in his 15 from 20 balls.It was only the 44 from the last three overs, as Haddin raced to 37 from 16, that pushed Australia past a middling total. Tait made 179 look like a mountain.

Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak would be Newcastle United’s dream signing, according to a report from The Daily Mail. 

The lowdown

With nearly a third of the January transfer window gone, Newcastle have made one addition, recruiting Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid for £12m.

Currently 19th in the Premier League, the Magpies were dealt another blow in their battle to survive in the top flight with the news that Callum Wilson would be out of action for eight weeks through injury.

The 29-year-old is the team’s top scorer with six goals and Howe felt that his side were desperately in need of ‘a focal point’ in their shock FA Cup defeat to League One side Cambridge United on Saturday.

The Daily Mail journalist Simon Jones sets out Howe’s January wish list – two centre-backs, two strikers, a left-back and a midfielder.

Isak sits at the top of the list of centre-forward targets and would be an ‘ideal addition’ for the Magpies.

He is also said to be attracting interest from Champions League-chasing Arsenal, but Jones casts doubt about the possibility of recruiting him this month ‘with time pressing’.

The verdict

A player of Isak’s calibre would surely solve Newcastle’s problems in front of goal. Since joining Real Sociedad in 2019, he has scored 30 goals in 59 La Liga starts.

The Sweden forward has been described as a ‘unicorn’ by The Athletic’s Carl Anka, namely a player with a skill set so expansive that he ‘shouldn’t really exist’. The journalist noted Isak’s pace and strength, along with his ability to play with his back to goal and press from the front. In addition, he can use ‘skill-based moves’ to bypass defenders and employ ‘a handful of shooting techniques’.

When you also consider that he’s just 22 years old, it’s no surprise that Newcastle covet him, but the big problem is his €70m (£58.4m) release clause. That would consume the vast majority of Newcastle’s £100m January budget, and the aforementioned wish list is lengthy, so this could be a difficult one to pull off over the coming weeks.
