Gloucestershire quarter-final fixture clash

Gloucestershire’s home quarter-final tie in the Friends Provident Trophy will have to be pushed back from its original date because the County Ground at Bristol won’t be available

Cricinfo staff18-May-2009Gloucestershire’s home quarter-final tie in the Friends Provident Trophy will have to be pushed back from its original date because the County Ground at Bristol won’t be available as the one-day international between England and West Indies takes place the following day.The quarter-finals are pencilled in for May 23 and Gloucestershire have already secured home advantage after their abandoned match against Sussex on Friday ensured they would top the table, but England and West Indies will already be in residence at Bristol for the ODI on May 24.”Our first choice would be to move the match so we can keep the game at Bristol,” a Gloucestershire spokeswoman told Cricinfo. “The semi-finals aren’t until July 5 so we have time to rearrange, but nothing has been confirmed yet and won’t be until the opposition are known.”The final round of qualifying matches takes place on May 20.

Celtic interested in Lee Buchanan

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Lee Buchanan to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Alan Nixon’s report for The Scottish Sun, with the journalist claiming that Ange Postecoglou could turn to the Derby County left-back in order to solve Celtic’s issues on the left-hand-side of defence, with the 56-year-old having played five different players in the position so far this season.

Nixon continues to state that the Bhoys sent scout Mick Doherty to watch the 20-year-old in action last week, as well as suggesting that crisis-hit Derby could be tempted into selling the England U21 international in the winter window.

Forget Taylor

While 23-year-old Greg Taylor has impressed over his four Scottish Premiership appearances so far this season – with the left-back averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.15 – as well as 19-year-old Adam Montgomery breaking through into Postecoglou’s first-team squad, it is undeniable that the signing of Buchanan would improve Celtic’s quality at left-back.

Despite the youngster suffering something of a dip in form in recent weeks – failing to achieve an average match rating higher than 6.8 – the £2.25m-rated man has nevertheless proven his quality for Derby this season.

He received a SofaScore match rating of 7.0 for his display in a 0-0 draw against promotion-hopefuls West Bromwich Albion, a 7.1 rating in the Rams’ 2-1 win against an impressive Stoke City side and a 7.7 rating in a 1-0 defeat to recently relegated Sheffield United.

Indeed, the Derby manager, Wayne Rooney, is certainly convinced of the potential the 20-year-old possesses, with the 36-year-old stating his belief that Buchanan is “one of the best young left-backs in the country.”

As such, should an opportunity to land the highly-rated defender in January present itself, it would appear an extremely wise move for Postecoglou to do all he can to secure Buchanan’s signing, as the left-back would undoubtedly be an upgrade on any of the 56-year-old’s current options in the position.

Chance to erase 2007 memories – Dhoni

MD Dhoni has said injuries to key players will help India test out their bench strength

MS Dhoni: “International cricket doesn’t have much to do with talent. It’s how you cope with the pressure”•AFP

MS Dhoni, the Indian captain, has said the four-ODI series in West Indies could help erase memories of their performance in the World Cup there two years ago. India made a first-round exit after losing to Bangladesh.”Of course, it is not an easy thing to forget, especially that 2007 World Cup,” Dhoni said ahead of the first match in Kingston on Friday. “It is always tough to forget that kind of tournament. It will be important for us to do well here.”India are without Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan for the series and are coming off a disappointing World Twenty20 campaign where they were beaten by England and West Indies and failed to qualify for the semi-finals.But Dhoni chose to look at the injuries in a positive way. “Injuries are never good when it comes to your key players. But now that it has happened, the only good thing is it gives a chance to see the bench’s strength.”When it comes to India, we have plenty of talent, but it’s about adaptability. International cricket doesn’t have much to do too much with talent. It’s how you cope with the pressure and how you deal with the situations, how you react.”Dhoni said the series would give youngsters crucial exposure. “This gives them the opportunity to spend time in the middle, play a few games, get a bit of experience, see what international cricket is all about.”Dhoni hoped the weather would stay clear for the series. “Our aim is to win this series and keep on improving our world rankings. We believe we have the players to do it and the hope is that the weather holds up and will be able to entertain the peoples of the region.”

Alexander-Arnold wowed vs Atletico

Liverpool managed to make no issue in keeping their winning run in the Champions League group stage going this season with a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane secured the three points against Diego Simeone’s side who saw defender Felipe sent off after just 36 minutes.

One Liverpool player that we think was a massive shining light for the Reds in midweek was right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

In the 89 minutes he was on the pitch for, Alexander-Arnold managed to assist both goals, make two interceptions, three tackles, attempt 112 passes with an accuracy rate of 92%, four of them being key passes, complete two accurate crosses and 11 accurate long balls, ultimately earning himself an impressive overall match rating of 8.4, making him Liverpool’s highest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

This shows just how vital Alexander-Arnold was for his side on this occasion and that he stole the show over any of his teammates, even the likes of Mane and Jota who were on the scoresheet, thanks to Alexander-Arnold’s assists.

So far this season, the 23-year-old dynamo, who is currently valued at £67.5m according to Transfermarkt, has made 11 appearances for the Reds across all the competitions in which he has managed to provide six assists in the process.

Since making his senior debut for the Reds, Alexander-Arnold, who has been dubbed as “outstanding” by Klopp in the past, has managed to score 10 goals and provide 50 assists in the 190 appearances he’s made across all competitions, highlighting just how much of an attacking threat he is for the team from the right-back position.

Additionally, with Alexander-Arnold being currently listed as Liverpool’s second-highest rated player with an overall season rating of 7.69, according to WhoScored based on his performances in the Premier League. This shows how important he has been for the team in their latest league campaign.

Moving forward, if Alexander-Arnold can keep producing the same sort of performances as he did in midweek throughout the remainder of the season, we feel he will be a massive part of any success Liverpool have this year, whether it be domestically or in the Champions League if he can keep providing assists and maybe even add some goals to his tally this season, as he’s shown in the past that he is capable of.

The England Under-19 team saved the final `Test’ match against IndiaUnder-19 from the jaws of defeat

Santhosh S30-Jan-2001The England Under-19 team saved the final `Test’ match against IndiaUnder-19 from the jaws of defeat. A brilliant unbeaten 53-runpartnership for the ninth wicket off 17 overs between Robert Ferley andJustin Bishop helped the England colts frustrate the Indians at theLal Bahadur stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday. England were 279/8 atfinal draw of stumps, with Ferley and Bishop unbeaten on 37 and 21respectively. The Indian lads thus clinched the series by virtue oftheir victory in the first `Test’ at Mumbai. The second `Test’ atChennai was also drawn.Resuming their second innings at 58/0, after being 176 runs in arrearson the first, England colts were, for most part of the day, looking atdefeat. The pitch remained true even on the fourth day, offeringlittle assistance to the bowlers. It was a hot day and the Englishboys put up a poor show for the best part of the day.England colts started off steadily with John Sadler and Nicky Pengshowing some good form. Peng got to his half century in style, playinga beautiful cover drive off Nitin Aggarwal. The score had slowly moved to 104, when Peng stepped out and droveAmit Mishra straight into the hands of the cover-point fielder, AlindNaidu. Peng made 72 attractive runs that included 11 boundaries. Fourruns later, Sadler danced down the track to Vidyut and was beatencomprehensively by the flight. Ajay Ratra wasted no time, to stumpSadler out for 27.Gary Pratt came in riding on his first innings century. He neverlooked comfortable against the spin bowlers. On 11, he decided tochance his arm against the leg-spin of Mishra. Pratt’s attempt toclear the field was in vain as he ended up giving Maninder Singh aneasy catch at mid-off.England Under-19 resumed after lunch on 138/3, and quickly foundthemselves with their feet stuck against some purposeful spin bowling.Ishan Ganda struck twice to reduce England to 174/5. First to bedismissed was Muchall. Trying to play at a ball fired down the legside, he only managed to edge the ball to Ajay Ratra. Muchall faced 70balls in making three runs. He had earlier got off the mark with astreaky shot, between the legs of the forward short leg fielder, AlindNaidu. The tall figure of Chris Tremlett walked out to take on the spinners. But he was all at sea against the slow turn the Indian bowlers wereable to generate out of this fourth day pitch. His stay at the creasewas terminated when Naidu gleefully took the catch, close to thewicket off the bowling of Ganda. Tremlett made just one run.Ian Bell was the only man who looked like keeping the Indian spinnersat bay. He played some lovely drives off them, on either side of thewicket. Bell’s vigil came to an end after making 61 runs off 163balls. He struck seven boundaries in his fighting inning, before beingcaught by Ratra off the bowling of Vidyut. The England juniors went infor the tea break at 207/6 in 102 overs.Though the BCCI playing conditions stipulate that the new ball has tobe taken after 100 overs are bowled, the umpires seemed to have gottheir numbers all mixed up. They let India bowl the 103rd over alsowith the old ball.Nitin Aggarwal took the second new ball and India juniors wererewarded immediately to reduce England colts to 226/8. England had athin lead of 50 runs and just two wickets in hand and the Indian coltshad a good chance of winning the match.Wallace was the first to be dismissed in the session, trapped in frontby Aggarwal for 22 runs at 220. Kyle Hogg made just two runs and wascaught behind by Ratra off the bowling of Aggarwal, leaving Englandreeling.Aggarwal bowled a fine spell of 5-2-16-2. But that was that forAggarwal, for Ratra relied on his spin bowlers for the rest of thesession to get the remaining two wickets and go for a run chase. Heeven gave Gautam Gambhir and YG Rao a bowl, but the English tailwagged to safety.Bishop and Ferley however batted confidently against the spin bowling.Vinayak Mane dropped Ferley off the bowling of Mishra in the 115thover, the last of many dropped catches in the match. Play was calledoff, with five minutes remaining. Ferley’s innings was decorated withsix boundaries and Bishop’s with three.

Postecoglou must unleash Forrest vs Dundee

With Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side heading into Sunday’s Scottish Premiership clash very much on a high after an exceptional performance in the Europa League on Thursday evening, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss will undoubtedly be hoping for yet another positive result and display when the Hoops visit Dundee this weekend.

And, in more positive news for Celtic, James Forrest appears to be nearing a return to full fitness after getting another 20 minutes of first-team football under his belt in the 3-2 win over Ferencvarosi TC, having made his first appearance since August in the 0-0 draw with Livingston last weekend.

The return of the winger, who has been sidelined as a result of an unspecified injury, will certainly come as a major boost to Postecoglou, as the 30-year-old has proven to be one of the Bhoys’ most creative and attacking outlets in recent seasons.

Indeed, over his 58 appearances in all competitions back in 2017/18, the £5.4m-rated forward scored 17 goals and registered ten assists, before bagging 18 goals and providing 20 assists over 56 appearances in 2018/19, and scoring 16 times and registering 22 assists over 47 games in 2019/20.

And, with both Jota – four goals and five assists over 13 appearances – and Kyogo Furuhashi – 11 goals and three assists over 17 fixtures – already well and truly firing in the Celtic front three, the further addition of Forrest to the 56-year-old manager’s attacking lineup would appear to bode extremely well for the Hoops’ chances of going on to reclaim their Scottish Premiership crown come the end of the season.

As such, in order to get the £15k-per-week Forrest back up to speed as quickly as possible, it would appear highly advisable for Postecoglou to unleash the player who Neil Lennon dubbed “priceless” from the off against Dundee, as the Premiership strugglers could act as the perfect foil to help reestablish Forrest as a regular in the Celtic first-team – something that is surely a terrifying prospect for the rest of the division.
