After joining Celtic for a figure in the region of £500k back in the summer of 2015, expectations for Ryan Christie’s future at Parkhead were extremely high.

It is easy to see why, as, after breaking into the Inverness Caledonian Thistle first team in the club’s 2013/14 Scottish Premiership campaign, scoring three goals over 15 league outings, the attacking midfielder went on to cement a starting spot in John Hughes’ side the following season, bagging four goals and registering three assists over 35 appearances in the top flight of Scottish football.

And, while still being just 20 years of age upon the time of his move to the then Scottish champions, Christie continued his rather remarkable rise away from Glasgow, during three separate loan spells.

The first of these was back at Inverness, where the Scotland international scored three goals and provided six assists over 13 Premiership fixtures, while the second two loans both came at Aberdeen, with the midfielder bagging 15 goals and registering 18 assists over 57 appearances in all competitions during his two years at Pittodrie.

Upon his return to Celtic, not only was Christe a more developed and well-rounded player, but he was also a more valuable one, with the youngster’s Tranfsmarket value rocketing from £225k at the time of his initial move to Celtic to £630k after his three temporary spells away from the club.

This is a trend that would continue at Parkhead, with the £12k-per-week man scoring 11 goals and registering nine assists over 38 appearances in all competitions for the Bhoys in 2018/19. His value then jumped to £3.38m in the summer of 2019 – bagging a whopping 20 goals and providing 16 assists over 45 fixtures in 2019/20. He once again witnessed his value rise in 2020 to £5.85m – and after scoring seven goals and registering 15 assists over 46 appearances in all competitions in 2020/21 his estimations increased to £6.3m at the end of last season.

However, despite these extraordinary returns and his ever-rising value, Celtic somehow allowed the player who Alex McLeish dubbed a “magnificent” talent to enter the final year of his contract at Parkhead without having agreed an extension – something which ultimately led to the Bhoys cashing in on the midfielder for a mere £2.5m this summer.

As such, considering the sheer amount of potential Christie demonstrated during his time in Glasgow, in addition to the fact that the Hoops sold the 26-year-old for a figure £3.8m less than his current Transfermarkt value of £6.3m, it is not a difficult argument to make that the Bhoys had something of a nightmare in the sale of the midfielder.

Punjab struggled after early losses and it was left to Kumar Sangakkara to weigh in with his first half-century of the tournament and the star of the day, Irfan Pathan, to provide the momentum for a fightback. Then, defending a total of 139, Punjab were indebted to double-wicket overs from Irfan and Yusuf Abdulla at the start.Both left-arm seamers did a sterling job under the Newlands lights, mixing their line and length impressively to check a shaky batting line-up. Rajasthan, who had set themselves a realistic chance of victory in the field fell 27 runs short.Rajasthan’s chase of 140 wasn’t a tall order, but their fate was sealed by a rampant left-arm seam attack who snaffled four wickets in the first five overs. Having contributed with the bat, Irfan grabbed two wickets in his opening over. He drew a top edge from Swapnil Asnodkar with a short ball and produced a thin edge off Graeme Smith’s bat with a fuller, away-swinging delivery. Rajasthan were 9 for 2.Yuvraj Singh had opened the bowling with Ramesh Powar but Irfan’s success encouraged him to go for an all-pace attack. The asking-rate kept increasing and it proved too much for Ravindra Jadeja (37) and Shane Warne, who scampered smart singles but couldn’t find the boundaries during their 60-run association. Abdulla came back with Rajasthan needing 38 from two overs and cleaned up Jadeja first ball. Irfan gave just six in the last over to cap a great game. That Rajasthan didn’t manage one six told a story.Irfan’s two early wickets were crucial defending a small total but that could have been smaller without his contribution with the bat when Punjab were four down for not much. Karan Goel was run out first ball – the second time in the day a wicket had fallen in that manner – before Kamran Khan and Munaf Patel struck. Warne’s decision to use each of his pace bowlers in one-over bursts worked wonderfully. He wasn’t always assured against spin, but backing himself to swing freely through the on side he helped Punjab rebuild. Warne and Yusuf were hit for a six each by Irfan, the quicker deliveries were smartly worked square on the off side, and a handy partnership of 75 in 59 balls had begun. Irfan kept up the momentum with some sweetly-timed strokes on the off side, the best of the lot being a cut off Warne when he came back on.Sangakkara’s 60 held the innings together. So often a calm, controlled batsman, he combined his usual elegance with a range of aggressive shots; cutting deftly, pulling powerfully and even launching Warne into a raucous crowd. Mascarenhas found just a hint of swing but too often served up four-balls; Sangakkara took him for three cracking boundaries. A powerful partnership had set up a final flourish but Rajasthan dismissed Irfan and Sangakkara in the 19th over to set themselves a gettable target.But in the end there was no denying Punjab, piloted to victory by the all-round heroics of Irfan, their brightest star.

O técnico Reinaldo Rueda encarou um grande desafio logo na sua estreia pelo Flamengo, na semifinal da Copa do Brasil, contra o Botafogo. Consciente da importância da equipe não sofrer gols, o colombiano mandou um time cauteloso a campo, mas sem abrir mão do ataque. Neste ano, quando comandava o Atlético Nacional, o treinador foi derrotado duas vezes pelo Alvinegro, por 2 a 0 e 1 a 0. Na última quarta-feira, porém, houve empate de 0 a 0 no Estádio Nilton Santos.

Rueda teve pouquíssimo tempo para trabalhar com os jogadores desde que assinou contrato, na última segunda-feira. Na quarta-feira, ele conversou com os atletas e passou orientações sobre o que viria pela frente no jogo contra o Botafogo. As várias anotações do treinador na derrota para o Atlético-MG serviram para mudar o time. O técnico barrou Márcio Araújo e Pará e lançou o compatriota Cuéllar e Rodinei no time titular.

– É difícil porque só fizemos dois treinos e ainda estamos conhecendo o grupo, e eles estão nos conhecendo. É tratar de manter o que vinha sendo o time, não fazer muitas mudanças – comentou.

Andrew McDonald knows he needs runs in Australia’s warm-up matches against Sussex and England Lions if he is to hold his spot for the first Ashes Test. The return of Shane Watson, Brett Lee and Stuart Clark could encourage Australia to alter their balance and drop McDonald, who has played the past four Tests.He is confident that his style of medium-pace bowling – he has nine Test wickets at 33.33 – would be a valuable asset in the English conditions. A source from Newcastle United has now revealed a potential move in the January transfer window for James Ward-Prowse.

The Lowdown: Midfielder wanted

With the St. James’ Park faithful being linked with the likes of Aston Villa’s Marvelous Nakamba and Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard over the past week or so following the completed takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, it is clear that the new owners want to bring in a new midfield player.

Where Ward-Prowse ranks in terms of their priorities is not clear at the moment, but it looks as if a midfielder could be brought to the North East in the January transfer window and he certainly ranks highly compared to the aforementioned targets.

The Saints skipper has played more than double the amount of minutes in the top flight as Nakamba and Lingard combined this term.

The Latest: Ward-Prowse eyed

A Tyneside source has now revealed to Football Insider that they will ‘explore the possibility’ of a deal for Ward-Prowse ahead of January.

He is reportedly a ‘firm target’ for the new owners, despite signing a bumper new contract with Southampton back in August.

The midfield is considered to be as much of a ‘priority’ as the defence is by the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) transfer advisors, and Ward-Prowse could certainly fit the bill.

The Verdict: Big upgrade

Ward-Prowse would certainly be a big upgrade to what the Magpies currently have as their options in the heart of the midfield.

Described as ‘outstanding’ by Ralph Hasenhuttl for his performances for the Saints last season, he grabbed himself an impressive eight goals and seven assists in the Premier League, far more than the likes of Issac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff (Whoscored).

Being the captain of his team, Ward-Prowse also offers extra leadership qualities, and being a ‘dead-ball specialist’, he offers a new threat from set pieces too.

Nonetheless, having played in every single minute in the top flight last term, the England international has proven that for all his talent he is an extremely hard-worker too, and thus would get the Toon Army on his side very quickly.
