Steyn blames long break for Australia's escape

Taking a break is always enjoyable, but the long hiatus from first-class cricket did take its toll on the South African bowlers on the first day in Johannesburg

It’s been seven weeks since South Africa’s Test players flew out of Sydney with the series won and a decent rest ahead of them and three weeks since their ODI representatives left the country. Taking a break is always enjoyable, even if you spend it wrestling crocodiles like Dale Steyn, but the long hiatus from first-class cricket did take its toll on the South African bowlers on the first day in Johannesburg. While Australia’s players either took on New Zealand in the limited-overs series or went back to their states for some four-day action, South Africa’s men had nothing but domestic Twenty20 on the agenda. None of Steyn, Morne Morkel or Makhaya Ntini have played a first-class match or even a 50-over game since leaving Australia and Steyn said it had taken a while to get used to the longer format again.”Because we haven’t been on the park since January the 7th, for some of the bowlers – with our patience not really being there – forced to string a good couple of overs together, it couldn’t quite happen,” Steyn said. “It looked like [Michael] Clarke and [Ricky] Ponting just got off the hook there a little bit. Once we got the ball in the right spot it just showed there is something out there for the bowlers.”Adding to the problems was the fact that Jacques Kallis left the field before lunch with a back injury and was unable to add to the four overs that he had already sent down. Kallis had scans and was cleared to resume bowling on the second day but Steyn said being a bowler down had made things even more difficult.”We were a bowler short with Jacques being off the field,” he said. “We were supposed to run in and take five-over spells, short spells, that was increased to at least six or seven or eight and that does play its toll when you haven’t been on the park for quite a while. But this is what we have to deal with.”

Despite the challenges, Steyn picked up three wickets and extracted significant swing, while Ntini and Morkel each chipped in with a breakthrough. Steyn had success in the first over of the match when he dropped in a short one that tempted the debutant opener Phillip Hughes into a strange, rash attempted slash over the slips that ended up being edged behind.”If I could have bowled that ball a little bit closer to his head I would have enjoyed that but I wouldn’t change it,” Steyn said. “It was a bit wide, wasn’t it? But look, it got a wicket. Who knows, maybe he was a little bit nervous and wanted to get off the mark. If I watch the replay it looked like he tried to hit it down anyway.”Steyn added the important wickets of Simon Katich, who was brilliantly taken in the gully by a diving Neil McKenzie, and Michael Clarke, who flashed outside off stump and edged an outswinger. Australia finished at 254 for 5 when bad light stopped play and Steyn said neither side could claim much of advantage.”We’ll take it as a dead even day and anything can happen tomorrow with the new ball just around the corner,” he said. “If we strike early tomorrow morning then things are back in our hands.”

Essex survive scare in opening win

Essex were pushed to their limits by a team of amateur players representing the Pro Arch Trophy sponsors, Emirates Airline, but survived a double injury scare to go on and post a six-wicket win on a steamy evening in Dubai.Though temperatures reached almost 90 degrees at the start of the game, Essex edged home in much more temperate climes under floodlights just after 10pm local time, thanks to a cool, unbeaten 81 by Ryan ten Doeschate and 50 from the debutant, Matthew Walker, as they successfully chased down the Emirates total of 277 for 6.The Essex openers, Mark Pettini and John Maunders, added 64 at a steady rate of five-an-over until the introduction of medium pacer and man-of-the match Arshad Ali who, having scored an unbeaten century earlier in the day, then accounted for both in successive overs.Maunders (23) scooped a simple catch to Lalith Dananayake then, 12 balls later, Pettini followed suit; pulling lamely against the same bowler he picked out Kashif Khan at short midwicket to go for 41 off 23 balls. Some 56 runs on and Varum Chopra became the third Eagles’ victim, going leg before for 33 after he missed an attempted sweep against Yasin Sikander. But the experienced fourth-wicket pair of ten Doeschate and Walker, on his competitive debut for Essex, posted 57 in attractive fashion with ten Doeschate increasing the tempo with a crisp straight six and a lofted drive over the ropes at extra cover. The partnership proved a little confusing to the 30-odd local supporters, however, as both batsmen wore shirts belonging to absent allrounder Graham Napier.Despite suffering bouts of cramp that required treatment from physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik, Walker posted his first half-century since joining from Kent from 65 balls and in 78 minutes but was immediately forced to retire hurt with dehydration and was taken by ambulance for treatment at a local clinic.Adam Wheater fell in the late run-chase when chipping a return catch to the bowler and James Middlebrook also limped off with a foot injury, but ten Doeschate calmed the nerves and killed hopes of a giant-killing by carrying his side to victory with 18 balls to spare.Earlier, airline worker and part-time cricketer Arshad scored an excellent unbeaten 109 to ease Emirates to an excellent 50-over total of 277 for 6.Arshad, a 32-year-old visa services manager, posted seven fours and four sixes during his well-paced innings. A rangy right-hander who has played four ODIs for UAE, scored a flurry of boundaries at the start of his innings but, when wickets started to fall, dug in to ensure he batted through. He went two hours without scoring a boundary until, with overs running out, he revealed an array of strokes that took him to three figures in a rush. He took 14 off one over from seamer David Masters, made up of two fours though midwicket and a clipped six into the seats at deep square leg, as he posted his hundred in 204 minutes and from 123 deliveries.Masters, with 1 for 39 from his 10-over stint, was easily the most economical bowler in an inexperienced Essex attack that generally bowled too short after being asked to bowl first in temperatures approaching 90 degrees when the game started at 2.30pm local time.Young Essex pace bowlers Jahid Ahmed (2 for 57) and Mervyn Westfield (2 for 53) were possibly deceived by the appearance of the pitch at the dusty and somewhat ramshackle Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium. Cracked, dry and shiny in appearance and seemingly like a corker at the Recreation Ground in Antigua, the surface actually lacked bounce and carry and played more like a club pitch in Cork on a wet Wednesday evening. However Ali used all his local knowledge and nous to carry the Emirates’ side through to their very respectable total, aided by decent contributions from vice captain Amjad Javed (40), Saby Fernandes (44) and Kashif Khan (32).

Aston Villa: Buendia should start vs Spurs

After securing a famous 1-o win at the home of Manchester United last week, Aston Villa will be hoping to enjoy yet another big victory when they travel south to face Tottenham.

Dean Smith’s side sealed all three points at Old Trafford thanks to a late Kortney Hause header and will no doubt be bouncing into today’s game against Spurs.

However, one man who has been on the fringes of things since his summer arrival from Norwich is Emi Buendia.

The Argentine started the first three of the games of the new Premier League season before the whole controversy of travelling away on international duty caused him to lose his place in Smith’s side.

He did come on for the final 12 minutes against United last week, but will surely be hoping that he can break into the Villa line-up today.

Max Aarons, his former teammate at the Canaries, has previously raved about Buendia’s abilities, saying: “He’s not really a player who will get on the ball and take you on as a full-back. His game is more about getting into pockets, playing neat passes and creating things.

“When you’ve got someone, who wants to run at you, then it’s easier to lock them down whereas someone like him is quite intricate so it’s hard to get near him. He’s tenacious and very strong. He’s got a lot of attributes.”

The 24-year-old was superb last season for Norwich, playing in between the lines to good effect and showing the kind of eye for a pass which saw him finish as the Championship’s leading assists provider with 16 last term.

While playing away at United might understandably have seen Smith opt to leave Buendia on the bench, a game against a struggling Spurs side who are faltering in the Premier League could give the Argentine the perfect chance to take the game to the north Londoners and cause havoc.

The £31.5m-rated playmaker has been dubbed a “revelation” by Chris Sutton, and he could well be Villa’s game-changer today against Spurs upon his hopeful return to the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has dropped an Aston Villa transfer update…

Se deixar o time deles tomar conta do jogo eles vão aproveitar.

Ismael could save WBA millions with Cleary

While West Bromwich Albion have started life under Valerien Ismael well, with the Baggies having lost just one of their 11 Championship fixtures under the Frenchman, there have nevertheless been questions raised regarding Albion’s lack of an out and out goalscorer.

Indeed, while Ismael did secure the services of Norwich City centre-forward Jordan Hugill on a season-long loan deal this summer, the 29-year-old is yet to find the back of the net over his seven second-tier appearances for the club.

That’s something that has caused West Brom problems at times, none more so than when the Baggies failed to win three consecutive fixtures against Millwall, Derby County and Preston North End – with Albion scoring just two goals in these games.

As such, it would appear likely that Ismael is already starting to consider entering the January market for further additions up top, however, perhaps the 46-year-old could find a solution to his problem much closer to home.

Lukaku 2.0

West Brom have developed something of a reputation for developing promising young players in recent years, with the likes of Aston Villa’s Louie Barry and Crystal Palace’s Nathan Ferguson both being graduates of the Baggies academy.

However, unfortunately for the Championship side, they have often been unable to keep hold of their most exciting prospects, with many leaving The Hawthorns on free transfers, while others have been picked up by Premier League teams for a relative snip.

And, it would now appear as if West Brom have yet another diamond on their hands, this time in the shape of 17-year-old Reyes Cleary – who is already reported to be attracting the interest of Borussia Dortmund as well as many others.

Indeed, it is not difficult to see why there is significant interest in the teenager, as, over his four U18 Premier League appearances for Albion this season, Cleary has scored a brace in each fixture – which just so happen to have been against Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

The teenager has also bagged two goals over two appearances for the Baggies’ U23 side, taking his total haul so far this season to ten goals – in addition to one assist – in just six games.

Furthermore, it is not only transfer interest that Cleary is attracting, but also extremely high praise, with West Brom’s U18 coach Peter Gilbert dubbing the striker a “powerful” player who is an “excellent” finisher – while the youngster has also been compared to former Baggies loanee and current Chelsea star, Romelu Lukaku.

Considering Ismael’s reputation for involving up and coming talents in his first-team squad, in addition to Hugill’s distinct lack of goals, it would seem a wise move for the Frenchman to begin exposing Cleary to senior football before potentially dipping into the transfer market this winter – as the teenager could well go on to save Albion millions in transfer fees.

Leewards overcome scare to snatch narrow win

A round-up of the fourth day of the 14th round matches of the Regional Four Day Competition

Cricinfo staff15-Apr-2009Leeward Islands overcame a lower-order scare from Windward Islands to snatch a 28-run win in St Thomas. Windwards were tottering at 110 for 7 overnight in pursuit of 249 for victory, and were in deeper trouble when they lost their eighth wicket, that of Mervin Mathew, with the score on 125. However, an 84-run ninth-wicket partnership between Shane Shillingford (57) and Deighton Butler (43) threatened to turn the tables. Shillingford’s innings included six fours and a six, but his partner Butler was more aggressive, taking 57 balls for his 43. Leewards got their much-needed breakthrough when legspinner Anthony Martin got one to spit off the pitch to have Butler caught at short leg by captain Steve Liburd. Shillingford then was unable to see his team through, losing his patience to hole out in the deep at long-on off Martin while attempting to clear the ropes. Martin finished with three wickets – two of which came on the final day – and Gavin Tonge with 5 for 44 to give Leewards their fifth win of the competition. However, they still finished two points shy of Windwards to take the third place.Guyana and Barbados played out a draw at the Providence Stadium after a century from opener Sewnarine Chattergoon helped extend Guyana’s lead to 298 on the final day. Barbados then batted 14 overs to reach 67 for 1 before the match was called off. Starting the day on 72, Chattergoon progressed to his fifth first-class century and was well supported by Vishal Singh (34) in a stand of 96 for the fourth wicket. Handy contributions from Royston Crandon, his brother Esuan and Davendra Bishoo, each of whom chipped in with 30-plus scores, prolonged their team’s innings and ensured that a draw was the only result possible. Guyana were bowled out for 360, with legspinner Nikolai Charles finishing with career-best figures of 5 for 99. At the end of the match, Guyana found themselves at the bottom of the points table with no wins against their name. Barbados finished with 60 points, with four wins and five losses, to take the fifth place.
