Leeds: Brooklyn Nfonkeu set to join Man City

Manchester City have agreed to sign Leeds United’s young winger Brooklyn Nfonkeu, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Academy’s impressive 12 months

It’s been an impressive 12 months for the Whites when it comes to their academy.

They were awarded Category One status last summer and brought in the likes of Cody Drameh from Fulham, Joe Gelhardt from Wigan and Sam Greenwood from Arsenal, all of whom played a key role in the club’s Premier League 2 Division Two triumph last season.

Leeds have strengthened further this summer, signing Sean McGurk from Wigan and Lewis Bate from Chelsea, however, it seems as if one youngster looks set to leave Elland Road.

The Latest: Nfonkeu exit

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a City source, the Premier League champions have agreed terms with Nfonkeu ahead of an academy transfer.

The report claims City moved for the Leeds forward after being impressed in youth matches, with Nfonkeu, who most recently played for the Under-15’s, set to depart after three-and-a-half years on the books at Elland Road.

The Verdict: Leeds will move on

Although Nfonkeu was never at the stage of breaking into the club’s Under-23 side, he’s clearly got bundles of talent for Manchester City to show a strong interest.

The Whites have gone from strength to strength in regards to their academy in such a short space of time, so even though it could be a blow to lose Nfonkeu in the long run, we’re sure the club won’t dwell on a deal for too long at this moment in time.

In fact, given their activity in the market recently with the acquisitions of McGurk and Bate, perhaps this will only spur more exciting signings if they opt to find a like for like replacement for the departing talent.

Essex take Division Two title

Essex have taken the Division Two title in the Frizzell County Championship, beating Nottinghamshire by seven wickets at Chelmsford

Ralph Dellor21-Sep-2002Essex have taken the Division Two title in the Frizzell County Championship, beating Nottinghamshire by seven wickets at Chelmsford. Nottinghamshire were already assured of promotion themselves. Essex began the day needing another 211 runs with eight wickets in hand. They lost Mark Waugh when the Australian had made 76 at better than a run a ball and had put on 125 with Will Jefferson who was joined by Aftab Habib. The pair took Essex to their target without wasting any time. When the Jefferson hit the winning runs off the bowling of the Paul Johnson, playing his last match for Nottinghamshire before retiring, the tall opener was on 165, with Habib on 57.Worcestershire were set 373 to win by Derbyshire – and got them with one wicket to spare. That last man was none other than Graeme Hick, who came in at number 11 suffering from a fractured thumb. David Leatherdale with 89 not out and Gareth Batty with 74 had made the win possible with a stand of 122 for the fifth wicket, Matt Mason, who went into this match with a first-class batting average of 7.50, scored fifty, but when the ninth wicket fell there were still 13 runs required. Hick scored ten of them. Kevin Dean finished a fine season with another five wickets.Glamorgan batted on to reach 528 for seven before declaring. M.J. Powell (Michael) was out for 92, while Robert Croft was 71 not out when he set Northamptonshire an unlikely 447 to win. Another M.J. Powell, this time Mark, was the man to hold up the Glamorgan bowlers with an innings of 108 as his side made 242 for six to secure the draw.In Division One, Warwickshire pulled of a stirring victory by three wickets against Sussex at Hove to secure runners-up spot behind Surrey. Warwickshire needed 401 to win in the fourth innings and thanks to a hundred from – that’s right – M.J. Powell (Michael again), ninety from Dominic Ostler and 79 not out from Dougie Brown, Warwickshire made it.Meanwhile the champions, Surrey, went on to 492 for nine before they declared with Adam Hollioake recording a double hundred and Ali Brown a mere single. Leicestershire were in all sorts of trouble at 11 for four before 68 from Neil Burns halted the slide. But the reprieve was only temporary as Tim Murtagh finished with five for 39, Leicestershire were bowled out for 142 and Surrey finished their triumphant season with a win by the little matter of 483 runs.

Morelos in no rush to leave Gers

Former Glasgow Rangers striker Nacho Novo believes Alfredo Morelos is in no great rush to depart Ibrox this summer.

The Lowdown: Morelos the subject of heavy interest

Morelos has been the subject of heavy interest already this summer (A Bola), with Portuguese outfit Porto in particular in pursuit.

So far, there does not appear to be any concrete approach made, but there is still plenty of time left before the transfer window slams shut.

The Latest: Novo discusses Morelos

Speaking to The Daily Record, Novo, who ‘took Morelos under his wing’ at Ibrox, believes the striker is in no rush to depart. He said:

“I don’t think Alfie has to prove himself to top clubs in Europe because his record is there for everyone to see. But obviously, if he can do as well in the Champions League as he did in the Europa League then he will attract even more attention and maybe a year from now he can move on.

“That’s a situation where everybody will win.

“He is a big, confident player. He believes in what he can do and he believes in himself. You look at him and he is more relaxed on and off the pitch. He has been at Rangers a long time now and he is settled.

“I know things can change very quickly in football and with agents involved anything can happen, but I know Alfie and I know he loves Rangers. He is passionate, he loves the atmosphere around the club and loves the fans. I honestly don’t think he is in a great hurry to move on.”

The Verdict: Big season ahead

Novo, who has been involved in some controversies down the years (centrocampista.com), knows all about what it takes to be successful in Glasgow. He helped the Gers win several titles, while he was also a part of the team that reached the 2008 UEFA Cup final, which the Gers lost to Zenit St Petersburg.

At 25, the Colombia international meanwhile still has plenty of time left ahead of him, but he will be aware that the time is approaching for him to move on. If the Gers qualify for the Champions League group stages this campaign, it may be the perfect way for Morelos to bow out and move on next summer.

In other news, Rangers fans were unhappy with the exit of this man.

Gloucestershire release England's Snape

Jeremy Snape has, over the past year, become an established member of the England one-day set up

Ralph Dellor27-Sep-2002Jeremy Snape has, over the past year, become an established member of the England one-day set up. At the same time, he has fallen out of favour with his county, Gloucestershire, to the extent that he only appeared in four county championship matches for them during the season just finished. He lost his place at the end of May and failed to get it back although he did appear in limited-overs cricket. Now comes news that the 29 year-old off-spinning all-rounder has been released by Gloucestershire and will have to find a new county. The news came in a press release issued by the county in which it was said: “This has been a difficult decision about a player who has performed very well for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and achieved a lot of success in the four years he has been with us. However, his relationship with the cricket management over the past 18 months has been very poor and has reached the stage where we believe it is unlikely to improve.”It was no secret that he had not seen eye-to-eye with the coach, John Bracewell (apart from the fact that Bracewell stands 6′ 2″ and Snape is only 5′ 8”), and his release is an unfortunate outcome for someone who, only recently, stated that he wanted to continue playing for the county he joined in 1999 after making his debut for Northamptonshire in 1992. He contributed fully to the Gloucestershire success in winning five one-day tournaments in his first two years, catching the attention of the national selectors. He won the man-of-the-match award when he made his one-day international debut against Zimbabwe in Harare almost exactly a year ago. He had both the Flower brothers stumped in the same over on his way to figures of two for 39, and also held a brilliant catch to dismiss Guy Whittall. He is an outstanding fielder in the covers, scores useful runs in the lower middle order, while his control of flight has brought him success with his bowling. At a time when there is a paucity of spin bowlers in English cricket, he should not have too much difficulty in finding another county.

Hampshire clinch tense four-wicket win

Ian Harvey’s double-wicket, single-run final over of Surrey’s 175 for 6 ultimately proved extremely crucial for Hampshire, who pulled a tense run chase at The Oval with four wickets and six balls to spare

Ian Harvey’s double-wicket, single-run final over in Surrey’s 175 for 6 ultimately proved crucial for Hampshire, who pulled a tense run chase at The Oval with four wickets and six balls to spare. Powered to a very competitive total thanks to sprightly fifties from Mark Ramprakash and Abdul Razzaq, Surrey’s spin attack – led by Saqlain Mushtaq’s 3 for 24 – threatened to derail a flashy chase but Gary Lamb held his nerve to finish the affair with some brave hits in the 19th over. The foundation of the chase, Hampshire’s third win in the Twenty20 Cup, centred around starring contributions from Michael Lumb, Michael Carberry and Sean Ervine.Hampshire, despite losing Harvey in the first over, were handed a rapid start. Lumb was the aggressor, teeing off at a rate of knots against Chris Jordan and Pedro Collins. A sweetly-timed clip off his toes gave him his only six, but nine boundaries made up a 21-ball 45 that set the ball rolling. Jordan twice dropped short and was slashed either side of point before Lumb took three more boundaries off Collins’ second over with some crisp hitting.Saqlain’s introduction stemmed the tide somewhat. Attempting to clip him over the infield Lumb inside-edged back onto his stumps and Saqlain added Chris Benham for 6 to leave Hampshire 71 for 3 after eight overs. Carberry, a spectator while Lumb went ballistic, swept Saqlain for four to move into double figures and, partnered by Ervine, forged another crucial partnership of 57. Collins’ comeback over, the 11th, went for 22 and proved key in the Hampshire’s chase. Carberry picked up fours off the first two balls and Ervine deposited a free hit over long-on and flicked another four past short fine-leg.Surrey’s decision to pick three spinners almost worked. Trying to blast a wide one from Chris Schofield, Carberry was smartly stumped for a 33-ball 45, and when Nic Pothas also departed with the score 128, Surrey seemed to have clawed their way back in. Ervine, however, had other ideas and swatted two more massive sixes. He became Saqlain’s third wicket at 164 for 6 but Lamb, with an unbeaten 22 off 15 balls, sealed the match off with final ball of the 19th over. Ervine’s 46 from 27 balls had been central to the chase.A few more runs and the contest could have gone Surrey’s way. But that miserly one-run over from Harvey, including the wickets of Razzaq and Jonathan Batty, proved huge. Removing Razzaq for 34-ball 65 first ball, attempting his sixth six, Harvey then removed Batty next ball and a series of cunning cutters and yorkers yielded just a single. That was a blemish in an otherwise solid Surrey innings. Electing to bat after the forecast showers stayed away, the hosts were jolted in the first over as Alistair Brown, promoted to open in place of James Benning (back injury), edged his first ball from Nantie Hawyard to Harvey at slip and Scott Newman was cleaned up by Billy Taylor soon afterwards.A clean-hitting cameo from Usman Afzaal (19 off 18) made way for a 90-run stand between Ramprakash and Razzaq. Ramprakash has struggled for runs in recent weeks, but here produced a lively effort. Beginning with smart singles into the open spaces, he didn’t refrain from putting away the bad deliveries, as a couple punchy boundaries through the offside and a meaty pull indicated. After ten overs Surrey were 74 for 3. Then Razzaq turned on the power. Opening up with a rasping cut off Hayward in the 13th over, he made the most of a sharp return drop off Lumb and slammed boundaries off Hamza Riazuddin, the young right-arm seamer. Hayward was singled out for some harsh treatment, especially: the first two deliveries of his final over went for lovely, high-elbow sixes just below and above the press box. Ramprakash, having raised his fifty off 39 balls, added six more to the over before he was caught and bowled for 60.Razzaq, dropped on 47 at long-off, brought up his own fifty off 29 balls with the help of a couple more sixes. That’s when Harvey, with all of his experience, cut him off and bowled the decisive over of the match.

Celtic: Loan to buy an option for Carter-Vickers

Celtic could look to sign Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan with an option to buy, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers profiled

Carter-Vickers has been linked with a move to Parkhead for some time now.

The 23-year-old, primarily a centre-back who can also play at right-back, has less than 12 months remaining on his Spurs contract. He’s had six separate loan spells away from Tottenham, one of which was with Luton Town, where then-team-mate Sonny Bradley described Carter-Vickers’ as ‘fantastic’.

The USA international has made just four appearances for Tottenham, and it seems as if he could be on the move yet again.

The Latest: Loan to buy?

The Daily Record’s live transfer blog on Monday (22:43) shared some interesting news on Celtic’s interest in Carter-Vickers.

They suggested that Carter-Vickers would want to leave on a permanent basis, if he does indeed depart north London this summer.

However, Celtic are thought to be exploring a loan with a possibility to buy for £5m, with The Daily Record believing that is a ‘live option’.

The Verdict: Could be Celtic’s biggest signing of the summer

It appears as if the Hoops are looking at a potential loan with an option to make it permanent next year.

However, should Celtic decide to sign Carter-Vickers this summer on a permanent basis instead, he seems likely to be the club’s most expensive addition of the window due to Spurs’ £5m valuation, surpassing a £4.86m deal for Kyogo Furuhashi.

It appears as if a deal for the American should be one to keep a close eye on, especially as Celtic are short of senior centre-back options following Kristoffer Ajer’s exit and Christopher Jullien’s injury and hence could look to push through a deal relatively quickly.

In other news: Wednesday medical – ‘Excellent’ Celtic ace now set to leave after recent development.
