Records threatened as rampant NZ women rout Indians

India’s women were humbled for the second time in two days at Jersey, folding for an embarrassing 26 chasing a modest target set by the world champion New Zealanders

David Liverman11-Jul-2002India’s women were humbled for the second time in two days at Jersey, folding for an embarrassing 26 chasing a modest target set by the world champion New Zealanders. The second match of the women’s tri-series offered a re-match of the CricInfo Women’s World Cup 2000 semi-final. New Zealand won by nine wickets on that occasion, and this match was to prove just as one-sided. The margin of 142 runs suggests that the gulf between the top two and the rest of the world in the women’s game is still a significant one.Yesterday India had struggled to 59 all out and England took over 30 overs to attain a meagre target; today runs continued to be hard to come by on the Grainville ground wicket.New Zealand were asked to bat, and after an initial flurry of runs from the openers were pegged back by the dismissal of Nicola Payne and Rebecca Rolls by the medium pace of Jhulan Goswami. When Kate Pulford was bowled by Hemlata Kala, New Zealand were in some trouble at 36/3.Skipper Emily Drumm and Haidee Tiffen established an excellent partnership, Tiffen curbing her natural instincts and batting carefully early on, taking more than 20 balls to get off the mark. She had six boundaries in her well-crafted 37, and the score had reached 90 when she became the first of four victims of Deepa Kulkarni’s flighted left-arm spin.Drumm batted steadily for a good half-century, being eighth out as wickets tumbled in the final overs. Kulkarni was the pick of the bowlers with 4-37, and Goswami took three relatively expensive wickets. The total of 168 was respectable in the circumstances, but proved to be moe than adequate. As it turned out both Drumm and Tiffen out-scored the Indian team, as the innings started badly and got worse. The Indians had no answer to the pace and bounce of Rachel Pullar who cut through the top order reducing the innings to the shambles of eight wickets down for only 10 runs. At that point the only question left to answer was whether they could avoid setting a new record low score in women’s one-day international matches. Some resistance from Goswami and No 11 batsman Neetu David saw them just pass the previous record of 23 (set by Pakistan batting a player short against Australia at Melbourne in 1996/97) but when the final wicket fell on 26 it was the third lowest ever (and the lowest by India, and by any team against New Zealand). The scorecard makes depressing reading for Indian fans, with Goswami and extras tieing for top score with six, and four ducks. The innings lasted only 19.1 overs, the second shortest on record (failing to beat Pakistan’s 13.4 over innings against Australia at Hyderabad in 1997/98).Pullar finished with the impressive figures of 7-4-10-5, her second five wicket haul in One-Day Internationals. She became the first New Zealander and seventh player overall to achieve that feat, joining England’s Joanne Chamberlain and Gillian Smith, Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Lyn Fullston and Charmaine Mason, and Pakistan’s Shaiza Khan. At one point she had taken five wickets for just two runs.Although New Zealand as world champions were strongly favoured in this match, the ease of their win over a team considered to be in the top five in the world was surprising. Although run-scoring was difficult, the Indian bats performance perhaps reflected their lack of preparation for these matches. Arriving only shortly before the start of the series and without any warm-up matches, the adjustment to playing high-quality bowling on unfamiliar wickets was too much for them. New Zealand toured both the Netherlands and Ireland before this series, and reaped full benefit for their practice in this match.

Crystal Palace eyeing Odsonne Edouard

An update has emerged on Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, regarding Crystal Palace’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Guardian, they have identified Celtic forward Edouard as a potential target ahead of next season as they attempt to bolster their attacking ranks following the arrival of Patrick Vieira as manager.

Palace’s development coach Saïd Aïgoun worked with the striker at PSG and has a pre-existing relationship with the Frenchman, which could help the English side in any possible deal.

Fans would be furious

Celtic fans would be furious if the club allowed Edouard to leave this summer. It could represent a first howler during Ange Postecoglou’s reign, as selling the forward could be a big mistake following the exit of Kristoffer Ajer earlier this week.

Brentford officially confirmed the signing of Ajer for an undisclosed fee, which could reportedly end up being worth £17.5m if all add-ons are achieved. The Norweigan had one year left on his deal at the club and Celtic did well to garner such a fee for his services from the newly-promoted Premier League side.

Edouard also has 12 months to run on his current contract, but the Hoops cannot afford to cash in on him in the same summer as Ajer. Out of all the players to start ten or more league games for Celtic in the Premiership last season, the pair both ranked in the top five performers in terms of WhoScored ratings – Edouard 2nd and Ajer 5th.

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon once hailed the forward for his abilities, saying:

“I trust him with the penalties, he’s only missed one since I’ve been here. He’s scored goals in cup finals, he’s scored goals in big games from the penalty spot and he took it brilliantly today. He looked far more like himself today and I thought he was magnificent. He’s a joy to watch at times, so he’s had a good day as well.”

This highlights how important the Frenchman is to the club and why selling him should not be an option unless a huge bid comes in for his services.

It would not send out a positive message to supporters if both of their star men were sold after losing out on the title to Rangers. Cashing in on one of them for big money and reinvesting that to build around Edouard – even if just in the short-term – could be a more appealing way of going about it.

Therefore, Postecoglou must ensure that the attacker stays at Celtic Park until January at least, to help battle against the Gers to win back the Premiership.

If it gets to midway through the campaign and the club are not fighting for the title and Edouard is continuing to turn down contract extensions, then a sale could be facilitated with less frustration from the supporters.

No vestiário, conversei, pedi desculpas.

O Glorioso deve ir a campo com Gatito Fernandéz, Marcinho, Renan Fonseca, Emerson Silva e Victor Luís; Bruno Silva e Airton; Camilo, Montillo e Rodrigo Pimpão; Roger.

Spurs linked with Aaron Ramsey

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered talks with Juventus over a move for Aaron Ramsey, which could prove to be a disaster move by Fabio Paratici.

What’s the word?

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Daily Mail), the Welsh international is surplus to requirements at Juventus and as such, Spurs could offer him an exit route, with Paratici having signed the midfielder from Arsenal for Juventus back in 2019.

During his time with the Serie A club, the 30-year-old has made 65 appearances in all competitions, contributing just six goals and six assists.

However, in his time at Juventus, he has regularly been sidelined with injury problems that have prevented him from enjoying a consistent run in the side, and after Erik Lamela’s exit was confirmed earlier this week, the last thing Spurs need is to add another ‘sicknote’ player to their squad.

A transfer disaster by Paratici?

As a former Arsenal man, Ramsey would be a less than popular addition amongst Spurs fans too, whilst Nuno Espirito Santo already has a number of younger and arguably more talented options in midfield, with Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Oliver Skipp all likely to be regulars in his side next season.

Therefore, a move for Ramsey would make very little for Spurs this summer – he is currently valued at £12.6m and reportedly earns £187k per week with the Serie A side, so it would not be a cheap deal for Paratici to complete.

Midfield is one of the areas in which Spurs are strongest and any funds that would be spent on Ramsey could definitely be better spent improving Spurs’ defence, or finding a back-up/replacement for Harry Kane, as it looks unlikely at this point that Carlos Vinicius will return for a second season.

Although Ramsey was a star for Arsenal in the past, his injury problems, high wages and age mean that Spurs should steer well clear of the Wales international this summer.

Spurs fans will likely be furious if Paratici pushes ahead to complete a deal for the former Arsenal man as it as all the hallmarks of a disastrous type of signing.
