Leeds: Source drops Raphinha update

Leeds United winger Raphinha remains on the radar at Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the latest update from Mundo Deportivo.

The lowdown: Growing interest in Raphinha

Unsurprisingly following what has been a disappointing second season back in the Premier League, there has been heightened speculation over the future of the Whites’ top talents.

That applies to nobody more so than Raphinha, as the likes of Bayern Munich and Liverpool have previously been credited with an admiration of the 25-year-old.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-3/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, it now appears that there could be a new frontrunner in the pursuit of the flamboyant Brazilian…

The latest: Price drop pending?

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo highlighting the top summer targets in Catalonia, Barcelona manager Xavi has Raphinha in his ‘sights’ as the legendary former midfielder turned manager attempts to strengthen the ranks at Camp Nou.

It is claimed that the deal is ‘conditional on the future’ of Leeds, which suggests that relegation for the Yorkshire club would mean a definite departure for the seven-cap Brazil international.

Furthermore, the report claimed, that despite Raphinha holding a current market value of £40.5m from Transfermarkt, a loss of top-flight status could see a move completed for around €25m (£21m) this summer.

The verdict: Premier League status is crucial

Having played 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Brighton at Elland Road on Sunday, BBC journalist Jonathan Buchan took to Twitter to suggest that the man who was dubbed a ‘magician’ by team-mate Dan James could’ve played his final home game for Leeds.

With 28 direct goal contributions in 66 outings so far for the Whites, Raphinha has been a superb capture for £17m from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes (BBC) in October 2020 and has certainly proven to be at a good enough level to remain amongst the upper echelons of European club football.

Whilst the retention of top-flight football is pivotal for more than just the winger’s continued presence at the club, avoiding a possible cut-price sale of such prized assets – as has been mooted by this report – is almost as important for the club financially.

Selling Raphinha or indeed the much-coveted Kalvin Phillips at a bargain fee due to the loss of Premier League status would be a huge blow to the Whites’ finances and would likely hinder any plans that Jesse Marsch and Andrea Radrizzani may have in place to strengthen the squad at Thorp Arch this summer.

West Brom look to sign yet another free agent

West Bromwich Albion are looking at bringing former Everton midfielder Fabian Delph to The Hawthorns.

The Lowdown: Delph’s release

Delph, who shares the same agent as Baggies defender Semi Ajayi, was released by Everton over the summer. The 32-year-old had been with the Toffees since 2019 and made 11 of which came last season.

The former Leeds United, Aston Villa and Manchester City midfielder failed to find a new club during the summer window, but he is still able to sign terms as a free agent.

The Latest: West Brom links

A report from Football League World ahead of West Brom’s trip to Norwich City claims the Baggies are one of five Championship clubs looking at a potential move for Delph.

The report adds that Rangers are also keen on the midfielder, however, a move to the second tier in England is looking more likely.

The Verdict: Another one…

The Baggies have made brought in six players in recent months on free transfers, two of which have been out-of-window moves for Tom Rogic and Erik Pieters.

Steve Bruce has two defensive midfielders and two central midfielders to pick from at this moment in time, so you could make an argument for Delph being a smart addition.

However, the Englishman, who has scored twice against West Brom during his career, may take time to get up to speed in the Championship, especially after only making £80,000-a-week wage with his former employers.

Villa should unleash Ings vs Southampton

Aston Villa return to Premier League action on Friday night as they take on Southampton at Villa Park.

Steven Gerrard is a man under pressure after just one win from the opening six league games and Southampton at home represents a must-win game if the Villans are to realise their European ambitions this season.

If the former Liverpool legend wants to keep his job at Villa Park, he should consider handing a start to Danny Ings, after resting the experienced forward in the draw against Manchester City last time out.

Gerrard understandably selected a more defensive lineup against the champions, with just Ollie Watkins leading the line, but he should return to a two-striker formation against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Ings has two goals to his name so far this season, including a well-taken strike in Villa’s only league win against Everton, and he could be the difference-maker against the Saints.

Noel Whelan has complimented Ings and his partnership with Watkins in Villa’s attack in the past, saying:

“He’s showing what a good player he is and how dangerous he can be when he drops between the lines to feed Ollie Watkins.

“He is a phenomenal finisher as well, and we’re really seeing that partnership work with Watkins. They’re building that telepathy, which is key to any good side.”

Southampton will presumably line up with Mohammed Salisu and Armel Bella-Kotchap as their centre-back pairing, both of whom are 23 and under, so don’t possess too much Premier League experience.

Ings, meanwhile, has 175 top-flight appearances under his belt, with 63 goals and 19 assists to his name, and his experience and nous in front of goal could be vital if Villa are to pick up three points.

Seven of those goals came in the Premier League for Villa last season, as he finished as the second top-scorer, so if Gerrard needs a goal he knows he can rely on Ings to be a consistent finisher.

There is also the added incentive of Ings featuring against his old side, which always seems to be an added incentive for players to perform and often score, so Gerrard should take advantage of that as he looks to pick up his second league win of the season.

Therefore, after resting Ings against City, Gerrard should restore the former Liverpool man to his starting side on Friday night.

Man City: Guardiola makes Foden claim after Sevilla win

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has been discussing Phil Foden’s form after his side’s comfortable opening Champions League victory over Sevilla on Tuesday.

The Lowdown: City cruise…

The Premier League champions, having remained unbeaten domestically so far, also got off to a flying start in Europe.

Guardiola’s dominant blues showcased their flare and confidence yet again at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium with a 4-0 victory courtesy of some familiar names.

Marquee summer signing Erling Haaland made headlines again with a brilliant brace, but he wasn’t the only contributor, with strikes from Ruben Dias and Foden also guiding City to an impressive away win.

However, despite the latter man chipping in with a fantastic solo effort tucked into Sevilla’s bottom corner, Guardiola has some slight criticism.

The Latest: Guardiola makes Foden claim…

Speaking to BT Sport after the game (via City Xtra), the Spaniard claims Foden ‘isn’t playing too good’ overall despite his phenomenal ability to make an impact when it counts.

He explained:

Foden has an incredible thing, lately isn’t playing too good, but always does the job, and runs and works for the team. He is dynamic and his work ethic… You can play bad, but every single game, Phil does it. That’s why he deserved to play.”

The Verdict: Special talent…

Foden is perhaps an embodiment of the age-old football cliche ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’.

Over his six league starts, the England international has already chipped in with a goal and two assists on top of his strike against Sevilla earlier this week.

Even despite his so-called poor form according to Guardiola, the midfield sensation ranks among City’s top six best-performing players so far by average match rating per 90 (WhoScored).

If this is Foden in a bad spell, opponents may be worried to find out what the 22-year-old can do when back at peak form.

Man Utd ready January loan move for forward similar to Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United are reportedly one of the clubs interested in completing the January loan signing of a new forward who has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Man Utd prepare for huge Liverpool clash

The Red Devils face a massive game on Sunday afternoon, making the trip to bitter rivals Liverpool in the Premier League, looking to dent their title hopes.

It is actually United who go into the game with a little more momentum, albeit not a huge amount, having beaten Sunderland 2-0 in their last match before the international break. On the flip side, the Reds have lost their last three games, in all competitions.

That’s not to say that Liverpool aren’t still the overriding favourites to prevail, however, and Ruben Amorim will know that his side will have to produce a big performance, in order to have a chance of getting a positive result at Anfield.

Amorim is still very much a man under pressure, with one win against newly-promoted Sunderland not doing a huge amount to change his situation. If he is still in charge in January, though, it looks as though he could potentially have a special talent added to his squad, having also been linked with a stunning move for England captain Harry Kane.

Man Utd pursuing loan move for Real Madrid's Endrick

According to Caught Offside, Manchester United are interested in signing Endrick on loan from Real Madrid when the January window opens.

The Spanish giants are keen on giving him more playing time away from the club midway through the season and the Red Devils are waiting to pounce, as well as other unnamed clubs.

Endrick has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo by Football Transfers, which is enormous praise, and former Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has been blown away by his brilliance in the past.

This says a lot about how special Endrick is, and while signing him on loan is far less preferable than a permanent move to Old Trafford, United should still see it as an exciting piece of business to pursue.

Man Utd could now pay £52m for "lethal" new striker with 28 goals last season

The Red Devils may be willing to shell out a huge fee to sign a centre-forward.

ByDominic Lund Oct 17, 2025

The 19-year-old is a genuine superstar in the making – one who has already scored three goals in 14 caps for Brazil – and he could add extra magic to United’s squad halfway through the season. The fact that he will be hungry to prove his worth to Madrid can only be a good thing for the Red Devils, too.

Man Utd's answer to Kane: Wilcox leading race to sign "world-class" CF

Manchester United will quickly want to forget the 2024/25 campaign with the club registering their worst ever Premier League finish and points tally – ending the year on a measly 42 points.

Ruben Amorim took the reins back in November, but he was unable to transform their fortunes, with this summer vital if he is to be a success at Old Trafford.

The January window was his first opportunity to make the changes he desired to the squad, but ultimately it wasn’t long enough to make the wholesale transfers needed.

However, work has already commenced this summer to make key additions, with attacker Matheus Cunha the first player to make the move, joining in a £62.5m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

If they are to push up the table and return to any form of European football at the end of 2025/26, more signings are needed across the board, with work already being conducted behind the scenes.

The latest on Man Utd’s hunt for a new striker

Over recent days, United have been pushing hard to try and land the signature of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, looking to secure a reunion between the forward and the Red Devils boss.

However, it was confirmed that the Swede is only interested in a move to Arsenal this summer, with the hierarchy desperately needing to pursue other options before the end of the summer.

It appears as though Jason Wilcox has wasted no time, already making a move to land Eintracht Frankfurt’s talisman, Hugo Ekitiké, according to Foot Mercato.

The report claims that United are leading the race for the 22-year-old striker, who also has interest from Liverpool and Chelsea after netting 22 goals across all competitions in 2024/25.

It also states that they have commenced talks, overtaking the other English sides in the race for his signature, but any deal could set the hierarchy back €100m (£84m) during the off-season.

Why Ekitike could be United’s answer to Kane

Harry Kane has been a striker who has been a thorn in United’s side over the years, often producing the goods against them and stopping them from success.

The England international has scored 213 goals in England’s top flight throughout his career, before making the switch to Bayern Munich back in the summer of 2023.

Despite departing for Germany, the 31-year-old has still managed to haunt the Red Devils, scoring against them in the Champions League, registering 11 combined goals and assists in his 21 outings against the club.

It’s safe to say United have been lacking such a goalscoring presence over the last couple of seasons, but that could be about to change with the signing of Ekitike this summer.

The Frenchman has been labelled as a similar player to Kane by FBref, with the Frankfurt star matching or bettering him in numerous key areas – showcasing why he would be an excellent addition despite the mammoth price tag.

Ekitike, who’s been labelled “world-class” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists, but he’s managed to post a higher goal per shot on target rate – subsequently demonstrating his edge in front of goal.

He’s also managed to complete more take-ons and carries into the final third, highlighting the threat he poses when getting at the opposition with the ball at his feet.

The former PSG star has also come out on top in more aerial battles this campaign, offering Amorim the focal point that he’s craved since taking the reins back in the winter.

Whilst £84m may appear to be a small fortune for a player who’s never played in the Premier League, it presents a fresh opportunity to land a star that could take them to the next level.

Should he get close to the levels produced by Kane in England’s top flight, it would be an excellent pick-up, with his skillset certainly pushing the club back in the right direction.
