Gers urged to sell Morelos

Paddy Kenny has urged Glasgow Rangers to sell Alfredo Morelos this summer as speculation increases regarding his future at the club.

The Lowdown: Morelos linked with Porto

Already during this transfer window, Morelos has been heavily linked with a move to Porto whilst away on international duty with Colombia at the Copa America.

It has even been reported that he has already agreed terms with the Portuguese outfit (Antena1), but there has not yet been any official confirmation.

The Latest: Kenny urges Gers to sell

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny has urged the club to sell the 25-year-old this summer. He said:

If he’s pushing for a move, I can’t imagine Steven Gerrard would want something like that lingering over the club.

“They’ll want to get the squad settled, have a good pre-season and try and retain that title.

“You may as well cut your losses, get him sold and move on. Go and get someone who wants to be there, who’s gonna play well, score goals and help you towards that title.

“That way, you can go and organise your side for next season too.”

The Verdict: One more year

Morelos has always appeared to be using Rangers as a stepping stone, albeit while showing an immense pride and passion for the club on the pitch.

He previously said he wanted to play in a more competitive league (Goal.com), while he also more recently admitted he dreams of playing in the Premier League (Radio Caracol).

That being said, he has been a fantastic servant for the Gers, scoring 94 goals and providing 43 assists in 182 games for the club.

The carrot of Champions League football may be too much for him to ignore, though. Porto have also qualified for Europe’s premier club competition, of course, but Morelos has gone through a lot to put the 55-time Scottish champions in a position to do the same. He may well wait to find out whether the Gers reach the same stage and, if they do, he could wait until next year to depart.

In other news, Rangers are set to get a 40% discount on this 21-year-old.

Tottenham: Fabrizio Romano issues update on Spurs’ pursuit of Nuno Espirito Santo

Tottenham’s Director of Football Fabio Paratici has jetted into England to hold talks with former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo about becoming the club’s new manager, according to Fabrizio Romano.

THE LOWDOWN: SPURS SET SIGHTS ON 47-YEAR-OLD AS MOURINHO’S SUCCESSOR

Spurs have already been turned down by nine managers already this summer, with Ryan Mason remaining in temporary charge of the club at this moment in time.

The Telegraph have reported that Spurs are closing in on appointing Nuno Espirito Santo as their new manager, with the 47-year-old leaving Wolves at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Spurs finished seventh in the Premier League last term, and will be eager to push for a top-four finish next term, regardless of who they’re managed by moving forwards.

THE LATEST: KEY FIGURE JETS IN FOR FURTHER TALKS….

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham’s Director of Football Paratici has flown into England to hold further talks with Nuno and his representatives over a move to the club.

It seems as though the former Wolves boss is Spurs’ main target heading into the new league campaign now, as they look to find Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor.

“Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici arrived in London in the last hours. Talks on with Nuno Espirito Santo and his representatives,” Romano tweeted.

With The Telegraph reporting that an agreement is close as well, it seems as though Spurs might have got their main in Espirito Santo.

THE VERDICT: HE COULD BE A SHREWD APPOINTMENT BY SPURS….

This could turn out to be a smart appointment by Spurs, but you can’t help but feel that he wasn’t their first-choice target this summer.

The approaches to other manages like Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino will have been hugely frustrating for both Daniel Levy and the club’s supporters.

Spurs need stability moving forwards though, and Espirito Santo could be the manager that can do just that, having impressed with Wolves over the years, finishing 7th in consecutive seasons before injuries took their toll this term.

If the club can give him time to build a long-term project at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, then it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Spurs challenging higher up the Premier League table in the future.

Essex Eagles land the points against Gloucestershire Gladiators

Essex Eagles enhanced their promotion prospects with an emphatic victory by five wickets in a low-scoring match against Gloucestershire Gladiators under the Castle Park lights in Colchester

Ralph Dellor27-Aug-2002Essex Eagles enhanced their promotion prospects with an emphatic victory by five wickets in a low-scoring match against Gloucestershire Gladiators under the Castle Park lights in Colchester. The Gladiators won the toss and decided to bat first, thereby avoiding the handicap of batting under lights. However, an inept performance saw them bowled out in 33.4 overs so the lights were hardly needed to illuminate the Eagles’ path to victory. The Gladiators were bowled out for just 97, with Jeremy Snape scoring 30 going in at number three the top scorer. Wickets fell at regular intervals, with three going to Joe Grant and John Stephenson also taking three.Stephenson then used all his experience as a batsman to score a priceless 44 as the home batsmen found life almost as difficult as their visitors had. Five wickets went down before the modest target was reached and it took 36.1 overs before the Eagles had landed the spoils. They are now perched in fourth place in the table – two points behind Surrey Lions but with a game in hand.

Palmer: Ings should stay at Southampton

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer has questioned why Danny Ings would want to leave his old side for Manchester United or Tottenham this summer.

Ings is one striker Manchester United are said to be looking at as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to bolster his options up front.

As for Tottenham, Ings has been a reported target for the north London club for a while now.

Palmer, though, is not too convinced the 28-year-old will get regular game time at either side.

On Ings’ future and talk of a potential move to Manchester United or Tottenham, the ex-Southampton player said:

“Why would you want to go somewhere and not be a first-team regular? He’s at that stage of his career now [where he should be wanting to play].

“For sure, he’s going to move because there’s a reason why he’s not signed his contract – something’s sorted.

“The only reason why you go to those places now is because it’s a bumper payday.”

At Manchester United, perhaps Ings may fancy his chances against an ageing Edinson Cavani, who still managed to impress in the recently concluded season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.

Regarding Tottenham, though, should Harry Kane remain at the club, it is hard to imagine the England international getting much minutes on the pitch there.

'It was a dreadful day for us' says Jamie Cox as Cidermen tumble to defeat in Benson's

Somerset slipped to their heaviest ever defeat in the Benson and Hedges Cup at Taunton today when they were beaten by Northamptonshire by 145 runs

Richard Walsh03-May-2002Somerset slipped to their heaviest ever defeat in the Benson and Hedges Cup at Taunton today when they were beaten by Northamptonshire by 145 runs.Northants won the toss and batting first amassed 299 for 6, thanks to a fine 87 from their Aussie skipper Michael Hussey, that won him the Man of the Match award and an aggressive 76 from David Sales.Facing the daunting prospect of scoring at six runs an over, Somerset never recovered from losing Jamie Cox in the first over, and despite a rearguard action from Rob Turner (33) and Simon Francis (21) they were dismissed for 154 with more than 15 overs to spare.Somerset suffered a further setback during the Northants innings when fast bowler Richard Johnson left the field with a hamstring injury.Despite the inclusion of England stars Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick for their last two remaining games the likelihood of the Cidermen qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Benson and Hedges is now almost non existent. After the game Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "Of course we are very disappointed at the result and we will be looking to put things right. This was a very under par performance from a talented side, but despite the result we remain very positive."Regarding Richard Johnson he told me: "Johnno has suffered a hamstring injury, and will certainly be missing from our game at Bristol on Sunday."Skipper Jamie Cox told me: "We were very disappointing. It was a dreadful day for us, especially with losing Richard Johnson with a hamstring injury. With Gloucester winning today we are probably out of the cup."

'Somerset are on the look out for new talent' says Cricket Board boss

Richard Walsh21-May-2002″Somerset are on the look out for new talent,” Cricket Development Officer Andrew Moulding told me earlier today when I visited the Centre of Excellence at the County Ground.Andrew continued: “In the near future there are a couple of opportunities for youngsters who are not known to us to come along and show us what they are capable of.”The first of these activities will be the Nat West Interactive Cricket Zone that will be part of the Royal Bath and West Show that takes place at the showground near Shepton Mallet between May 29th and June 1st.The Cricket Development Officer told me: “The Interactive Cricket Zone will be staffed everyday by Somerset coaches, and we look forward to welcoming everybody along to the stand.”The second activity is the `Corner Festival’ that takes place over the forthcoming summer half term, and is named after Tony Corner who was a great champion of youth cricket in the county.Over three days, Sunday June 2nd, Thursday June 6th and Friday June 7th the five age groups, Under 11,12,13,14 and 15 will get together in their areas or `corners’ and play against each other on a round robin basis.Andrew Moulding told me: “The `Corner Cricket’ in June is for development squads, which is a level below our county teams, so we will be hoping to unearth some new talent over the week!”Any youngster or parent who would like to find out more about the `Corner Cricket’ for 2002 should make contact with Somerset Youth Coach Pete Sanderson who is based at the Centre of Excellence in Taunton, telephone number 01823 352266, or 01823 272946.

Newcastle transfer update on Joe Willock

Mark Douglas has dropped a promising Newcastle United transfer update regarding Joe Willock.

The Lowdown: Willock impresses

It is safe to say that Willock has taken his loan spell to St James’ Park by storm, having racked up seven goals in 13 Premier League games for the Magpies before their final match away at Fulham this afternoon (Transfermarkt).

It is not just with his goals in which he has contributed, but his overall displays as well, with Alan Shearer hailing his performance as ‘magnificent’ in the 3-2 home win over Southampton back in February when he first arrived on Tyneside.

The Latest: Promising Willock update

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has reported that Newcastle believe Willock wants to return to St James’ Park for next season.

Key to the Magpies’ pursuit is that they would build a team around the central midfielder, whereas he is not guaranteed to be a regular starter at Arsenal.

Willock does not want to go back to being a bit-part player and sees the Toon as the perfect platform to continue his development as a footballer.

The Verdict: Newcastle must sign Willock

Newcastle must do all that they can to ensure that Willock is signed on a permanent deal once the summer transfer window opens.

The 21-year-old has already shown his worth with his goals, and he certainly gives an added athleticism in the middle of the park which Steve Bruce will need going into the new campaign.

Nonetheless, other clubs will surely come knocking at the Gunners’ door given his form on Tyneside, and Newcastle need to make sure that St James’ Park is his only destination.
